CAGAYAN de Oro City-Three killed, four wounded, 13 missing and 50 families evacuated at the height of the fighting between the government troopers and the communist rebels in Misamis Oriental, the military said Wednesday.
Capt. Patrick Martinez, of the army’s Public Affairs Division in Camp Evangelista here, said that two army soldiers were killed and two others wounded in the fire fight that erupted in the hinterlands of Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental, Tuesday morning. He said that the military
withheld the names of the fatalities and the wounded pending notification of the nearest kin or family, although the wounded are now undergoing treatment in a military hospital here. Local government officials identified the lone civilian fatality as Dindo See fighting, page A11

Council authorizes Duterte to sign MOU with UP Mindanao for sports complex project
DAVAO City — The City Council passed on third reading Tuesday an ordinance authorizing Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte to sign on behalf of the city a memorandum of understanding with officials of the University of the Philippines Mindanao for the establishment of a sports complex at its Mintal campus. Battles that changed the course of history (14)
As we mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Philippines, we continue with our series on the various decisive battles which were fought all over the islands between 1944 and 1945. In this 14th article, we will start to relive the monumental Battle of Bessang Pass which took place between January 8 and June 14, 1945. If we were to compare the whole Philippine campaign to a boxing match, Bessang Pass would be the equivalent of the 14th round in a classic 15-round clash between two mortal combatants. Japan, heretofore undefeated in its military history, easily took the first two rounds with decisive victories in Bataan and Corregidor. Japan continued to dominate the next 7 rounds with its 3 year occupation of the Philippines. The tide turned on the 10th round at Leyte where the once invincible Japanese were dealt a crushing body blow by the Allies. The defeat at Leyte Gulf rendered the Imperial Japanese Navy ineffective for the remainder of the war. The Japanese were knocked down for the first time! The wobbly Japanese tried to rally by launching suicidal kamikaze attacks which bloodied the Allies under the eye. The Allies took the 11th by defeating the Japanese in Manila but
not before the Japanese inflicted 100,000 casualties on the trapped civilian population. The Allies responded by mercilessly pounding Japanese positions, obliterating 16,000 Japanese defenders, but destroying the once beautiful Pearl of the Orient in the process. The Allies battered the Japanese against the ropes in the 12th and the 13th with the retaking of Visayas and Mindanao. At the star t of the 14th, the Allies went for the head – Tomoyuki Yamashita – whom the Allies dislodged from his Baguio headquarters on April 19, 1945. Yamashita had retreated further north, with the Allies in hot pursuit. Only three formidable passageways: Balete Pass (since renamed as Dalton Pass), Villaverde Trail and Bessang Pass separated the Allies from Yamashita. The first two were at-

Pobre and Philipp Kimpo, Jr. (“The Freedom Fighters of Northern Luzon”) chronicled the Filipino fighters’ exploits. The burden and the honor of taking Bessang Pass belonged to the United States Armed Forces in the Philippines-Northern Luzon (USAFIP-NL). After the fall of Bataan and Corregidor, this group was a ragtag band who simply refused to give up. They continued to fight with the few firearms which they managed to salvage from the Philippine Military Academy and guns and ammunition captured during subsequent skirmishes with the Japanese. In August 1944, the group received their longawaited arms assistance when the submarine Sting Ray unloaded arms and war materiel in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. Three months later, another submarine USS Gar - made a separate landing in La Union. (A fictionalized account of the landings became the basis of a 1961 movie – Landing at Bloody Beach - starring an authentic WWII hero Audie Murphy.) Before long, the ragtag army became big enough – division size - and sufficiently battle-hardened
to be formally integrated into the Allied forces. Aquino’s effort to spare the life of Mary Jane Veloso’s execution last Tuesday afternoon. “Aquino made a personal appeal to Indonesian
President Joko Widodo by proposing to the Indonesian government that Veloso be turned as state witness to identify illegal drug syndicates,” Rodriguez said. Veloso,30, along with eight others, were about to be executed Tuesday afternoon after the Indonesian high court found her guilty of drug trafficking involving more than 2.6 kilogram of heroine that Veloso reportedly carried from Malaysia to Indonesia four years ago. AMBOANGA City -– The local government has initiated a tour of the PHP175.8 million Integrated Bus Terminal (IBT) to orient and acquaint the concerned stakeholders with the facilities and amenities at the IBT of this city. C it y Ad m i n i s t r ator Antonio Orendain Jr. led the orientation of the IBT in B arangay Div is or i a which was held Tuesday with representatives from the different bus firms. Among those who joined the orientation were representatives from the Rural Transit Mindanao, Inc. (RTMI) Liza May Bus Company, SSG and Dindo Bus Company. The RTMI has a fleet of 123 buses plying from this city to as far as C a g ay an d e O ro C it y, Liza May has seven buses while SSG and Dindo Bus Company has 10 buses and more than 30 vans. Orendain said the orientation included a briefing on how and where the buses will be positioned for loading and unloading of p ass engers, t he
ticketing process and all other concerns. Recommendations from the bus company representatives were also welcomed. Orendain said the orientation was necessar y as the city government gears for the opening of the IBT facility. The City Administrator’s Office will oversee the operation of the IBT. Orendain said his office will also initiate in the coming days an orientation for concessionaires and other groups of p eople w ho wil l b e utilizing or are involved in the operation of the IBT. He said that all aspects of the operation should be threshed out before the facility will be made fully operational. (PNA)

P AGADIAN City – Compliance with the accessibility law by public and private entities in the country leaves much to be desired, Zaldy R. Sanchez, chief of the Information, Education and Communication Division (IECD), National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) said in a recent interview with the Philippine
Information Agency (PIA) here. Sanchez, who served as one of the resource persons during an orientation on early detection, identification, diagnosis and intervention of disabilities among children held at the Executive Function Hall, City Mayor’s Office here, disclosed that the provisions of Batas Pambansa 344, otherwise known as the
Accessibility Law, have not been fully observed in the construction of buildings and other facilities to make them accessible to disabled persons. Under the said law public and private buildings and related structures for public use must be made accessible to persons with disabilities (PWDs). “How can we say that we are PWD-friendly if our buildings/structures have no ramps for disabled persons on wheelchairs?” he asked. “Although most of the structures in the country’s big cities have complied with the standards set by the ac-
cessibility law, the structures in the rural areas are not that PWD-friendly yet,” Sanchez pointed out. It is, therefore, a continuing campaign of the NCDA to make the buildings/structures including the streets and highways as well as public utilities accessible to PWDs, the IECD chief added. He also underscored the important role played by the local government units (LGUs) in the implementation of the accessibility law, as they are the ones issuing/giving building permits prior to the construction of any building/structure in the locality. Police, military teams pursue jail guard abductors in Surigao del Sur

UTUAN City -- Police and military teams are now conducting hot pursuit operations against the armed group who ambushed a Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) vehicle transporting inmates on Monday morning at a southern province in the region.
Four were hurt (three jail officers and an inmate) while two jail guards and an inmate were also missing after the incident. Reports from Surigao del Sur Police to the regional headquarters here said that heavily armed men ambushed a Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) 7:45 on Monday morning along national highway, Brgy. Amontay, Marihatag town in Surigao del Sur. The BJMP vehicle was transporting three BJMP personnel, two provincial guards and two inmates from Tandag City going towards Lianga town to attend a court hearing at the Regional Trial Court. When the party reached Brgy. Amontay, they were ambushed by an undetermined number of armed group. Wounded during the incident were Jail Officer 1 Denvert Balan, Jail Officer 3 Alfredo E. Handling the complexity of student personalities By Sheilla B. Diango Teacher – I Laguindingan National High School
School is the place where students of all personalities converge. Might it be sounds cliche, but it is true that conflicts will possible arise because different personalities will clash. This difference of behaviour and learning intelligence is not just a problem among students. The ones who will be most affected is the teacher, because it is her job to put up with these varying kinds of students. But of course, it is up to her on how she will manage her students, in general. There are teachers who choose to be tight with her students. These teachers are famous to their students as “terror.” It is because being tight or strict is already in her personality, or she choose to in order to discipline her students easily. This is considered as one strategy for classroom management. It could be seen, for example, in a noisy classroom which will turn deafening silent when the teacher enters it. There is authority and control. There are also teachers who choose to discipline their students in a person per person manner. Example for this are managing the silent type of students, or the introvert ones. This kind of students are also always present in a classroom setting and are mostly shy in nature. They are actually challenge to teachers because they are not showy of
what kind they are. Teachers have to understand them in a way that is comfortable for the student. It is typical for a classroom to have a complex environment. The ones mentioned are just few on how teachers must handle a diverse class-
room and students that are partly different compared to the whole class. Teachers, however, should recognize the diversity and find best ways to make them all appreciate learning. It is, after all, the prime reason why schools exist.

SATURDAY APRIL 25, 2015 I felt hot. I slowly opened my eyes. This was the first time I opened them. The first vision I had was intense light. I slowly adjusted my eyes around. It was the sun. I was facing up in this plastic bag of water filled with tilapia fingerlings like me. We were restless, wiggling around. Then suddenly some enormous thing slowly released all 70 of us one by one from the plastic bag. And into a bigger body of water that was simply endless. It was the river – the Iponan River to be exact. Of course I wouldn’t know the name

Elements of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) in Misamis Oriental would conduct a search and retrieval of civilian casualties after the military issued clearance Wednesday morning. The identities of the
wounded civilians are still being checked along with the names of the 13 missing civilians, mostly farmers, who remained unaccounted as of Tuesday evening. Jojo Bascug, head of the PDRRMC, said that 52 families have been evacuated and were provided relief assistance by the provincial welfare personnel who went to the area at the height of the fighting. Bascug said that the distributed relief and food assistance to each of the families would last for three days. Town Mayor Jubert Pamisa, of Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental, said that the fighting between the military and the NPA rebels reportedly occurred about 7:00 a.m. Tuesday. Pamisa said that the fire fight took place in the hinterlands of the farming village of Umagos in Lagonglong, days after the military invited two village officials suspected of being communist rebels for questioning. “I have no idea if the two village councilors were already released. However, I hope that the fighting stops immediately so that the farmers and residents in the area could go on their normal daily chores,” Pamisa said over the local radio here. Martinez said that the military of the army’s 58th Infantry Battalion is now in hot pursuit of the NPA rebels who have retreated deep into the hinterlands of Lagonglong in the border of Balingasag. Portions of the Mindanao grid normalized after a grid-wide power interruption occurred last April 5. Power grid operator NGCP implemented islanding operations as part of its blackout restoration procedures in the Mindanao grid within minutes after the blackout started at 1:01A.M. Findings reveal that a technical issue at the Agus Switchyard resulted to multiple line outages, which eventually affected the entire Mindanao Grid. NGCP imme di ately implemented blackout restoration procedures at 1:04 A.M. by going on “islanding operation,” which is the isolated operation of certain portions of the grid when there is a grid disturbance. NGCP’s Area Control Centers (ACCs) in Mindanao immediately performed islanding operations, and restored power transmission services to their respective areas, as follows: • 1:37 A.M. - Zamboanga ACC was isolated (i.e. operated on island mode), allowing restoration of power to the franchise area of Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (ZAMCELCO); • 2:47 A.M. - Iligan ACC operated on island mode to supply power to Marawi City and Lanao del Sur, Tangub, Ozamiz, and Oroquieta in Misamis Occidental, Dipolog and Dapitan in Zamboanga del

Move this World A holds teachers’ dance-based peace training in Oro

total of 350 basic education teachers from all over Asia Pacific descended at the spacious Xavier University High School Gym last April 22 to 24 for the 3rd International Conference on Innovative Practices of Integrating Peace Education to Core Subjects to Address Bullying in Schools. The training was spearheaded by Move this World, an award-winning nonprofit that uses creative expression as a vehicle to transform conflict, violence and bullying communities across the planet. Among the topics discussed were establishing trust, gaining comfort, a look at bullying in the Meranao culture, psycho-social factors in bullying, innovative practice of integrating peace education, creating schools of peace, the National Youth Commission’s role, somatic tools of empathy-based approach to bullying prevention, creating safe spaces towards active learning, bringing Move this World to more schools, among others. The lecturers included Dr. Marilou Nanaman, Dr. Wardah Guimba, Dr. Melodina Palima, Dr. Olga Alonsabe, NYC Commissioner-at-Large Kit Cruz and more. There was also a dance session with Erica Rose Jeffrey, a dance activist and Rotary World Peace Fellow from Australia who talked about Global Perspective of the Use of Arts in Peace Work. The workshop is completely movement-based and is designed to shun from traditional pedagogy in so far as teaching of peace education is concerned. The training workshop design is a product of years of research, anchored in our theory of change and logic model. Move This World is a global non-profit that manifests social change through the art of movement. It uses creative movement to address office-related stress and bullying and transforms conflict in communities worldwide. We focus specifrically on empowering individuals with the necessary skills to identify emotions within themselves, be empathetic in their interactions with others and act as change agents in their communities. In partnership with government offices, private companies, schools, community-based organizations and families, Move This World is building and connecting more peaceful communities in the United States in Baltimore, Newark, New York City and Washington, DC and internationally in Colombia, Germany and the Philippines. To date, Move This World has worked with over 8,500 individuals across 22 cities on four continents. Our vision is to change the way we teach and learn with movement and empathy at the core.
