CAGAYAN de Oro City–– The charred remains of a 35-year-old transgender was recovered in the rubbles of a house that went ablaze in a coastal village here Monday morning. Fire investigators found the charred remains of Ritchie Gonzalez, 35, in the ruins of the house in

Bugo, an eastern coastal village, 10 kilometers east of here, still holding her charred laptop and wallet Rene Megapatan, the victim’s lover for five years, also suffered burns, but is now in stable condition in a public hospital here. Fire investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire, which they surmised to have started in the ceiling of the receiving room.

And then the DepEd, must return the “Elective Subejcts.” In the 80s, Sophomore students were allowed to take elective subjects such as English, Automotive, Home Economics, Electronics and Electrical, and even backyard gardening. These rarely happen today because teachers do not have the time and that the classrooms nowadays are too crowded. At least, two hours a day is more than enough to hone the skills of students for each of the elective subject. Before implementing the K-12 program, perhaps, the DepEd can start making the

always steals something from the other person that rightfully belongs to them. It doesn’t matter if it’s cheating on a school test, in sports, or stealing money and possessions. Whether it’s breaking the law, not paying your full taxes owed to the government, or cheating and being unfaithful to your wife or husband. But cheating is just not smart. We not only hurt and steal from that other person, but we cheat ourselves! We become the biggest loser. And once we start cheating, it’s very hard to stop. Nothing you ever get through cheating can replace what you lost: your right relationship with your Maker, as well as your selfrespect and honor. You can only get these with

an honest heart and character. Plus, we can never be completely satisfied with the things we get by cheating or stealing. Even when we think we’re getting away with it, we’re not! We’re the one who has to live with our guilt and God’s judgment that we can never escape. So don’t fool yourself—you WILL pay for it! But today that can all change and you can be free. You can ask Jesus to forgive you for the cheating you’ve done in your life, and to give you the willpower you need to start changing and living His truly successful, honest way every day. Before the inventions of the technologies that we are using, reading was the primary leisure activity. Now, with the advent of modern technologies, students have lost their passion to read. In the younger generation, reading is becoming an area of real concern. This generation’s love for technologies aid them to develop visual intelligence, but the ability to analyse and reflect as what the teachers call “critical literacy” is not being developed. As visual intelligence increases, critical ability decreases. Thus, students need ample time to read. Reading competes with the modern technologies in the country. Instead of reading books, students choose to play online games nowadays. Moreover reading becomes weak because of lack of internal and external motivation among learners. They do not develop love for reading because they do not see their parents touch a book as well.

With poor reading comes poor learning. This becomes a reflection of poor language proficiency whether in English or Filipino. With the recent National Achievement Test (NAT), it is evident that students do not understand what they are reading because of low performance (Below Mastery Level). The alarming result of NAT mirrored the root cause of the problem which is reading. Basically, one cannot pass a test without reading and comprehending the written questions. The key to this problem is a strong implementation of reading program that lasts a lifetime. This should not only begin and end during the National Reading Month. This means that the school and the parents must work hand-in-hand to promote reading for pleasure thus, developing a reading habit. Doing so will ensure that the next generation are well prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.

“The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.” − Aristotle The phase of attaining knowledge and the time of enriching them are initial founding stages of a person’s life. Education is when he discovers more about his self, his surroundings and about the people he interact with. In learning, he is able to explore what he has and how could he use them towards finding the core purpose in this world. Learning also gives understanding and answers to a lot of questions a person has in his mind. Education

provides students the chance to understand beyond what they can see and explore several great things through different subject matters such as history, literature, sports, math, art and several others. These subjects serve as basic building blocks in creating foundation for students to succeed in latter life. Moreover, these would be their guide to improve their selves, in order to contribute to a progressive society. Education is also a way to discover personal interests among students. Interest is valuable for it is something that enhance individual and make him unique from others. Through interests, he learn to discover an-

other side of him that makes him more productive and interesting. Interests are also matters that define his field especially in life and careers. Education is an essential part of intellectual freedom, and one of its main values is improving how students view, exist in and participate in the world. Because education is also defined as a social event for most people, it encourages sharing of ideas and experiences among students, which helps them become better members of the community by teaching morals, ethics and community responsibility. The roots of Education might be bitter. It is because of the fact that not

all families could send their children to school due to a number of reasons which financial instability is one. It would take a lot of sacrifices, time, sweat, tears and blood. It would take a lot of decision-making and plans A-Z for most parents. It would a rollercoaster cycle of extending patience. However, in top of all these things, the fruits of education are surely sweet and this is the important thing, because this fruit will provide stability and pay off all sacrifices. The fruit will worth all the decision-making and planning. Most of all, the fruit of education will stop the cycle of poverty and hardships. I tell you, the fruit of education is the sweetest.

INDEBTEDNESS is a wrong word. Gratitude is the right one. We collectively as Filipinos must be grateful to the many individual and organizational benefactors that have somehow contributed to the infrastructure of our public basic education system from classrooms to chairs to even books and digital instructional materials. These fully furnished classrooms, libraries and laboratory buildings even have built-in toilet facilities. Some double as evacuation centers their roofdecks, such as the ones being constructed in Cagayan de Oro City. The fully furnished classrooms are equipped with armchairs and book trays while the laboratory

and library buildings are equipped with computers and furniture. There are even private companies who help secure the future of the brightest academic performers in select schools in Mindanao by providing automatic scholarship grants for each school’s Top 10 honor students. Considering the increasing school dropout in the last three years, this initiative is giving students from the poorest sectors have a shot at improving their lot in life. These scholarships are even enhanced with the entry of the Senior High school program. Momentarily, the other option is home schooling. But that is not that popular yet in the Philippines.

39 new public schools start serving IP learners SY 2016-17 in NorthMin A

nchored on DepEd’s mission to protect and promote the right of every Filipino to quality, equitable, culture-based and complete basic education, new public schools shall be established in 39 sites in Region X to serve indigenous learners in Northern Mindanao beginning school opening this June 2016 onwards. In a meeting called by Regional Director Allan G. Farnazo on March 1, 2016, at the Regional Office Conference Hall, he discussed comprehensively the details of the Memorandum sent by the Central Office to all RDs of Region IX, X, Xl, XII, and XIII regarding the establishment of new school sites. The sites for this Region were identified through the recommendation of the Division IP Coordinators and Regional IP Ed Focal Person Josephine L. Valledor of the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD), Regional Office. The sites are in the Divisions where IP learners are found specifically in the Divisions of Bukidnon, Malaybalay

City, Valencia City, Iligan City, and Gingoog City. On classroom construction, RD addressed all DepEd Engineers to see a different approach that conforms to the standard of the community, consistent with the religious and cultural beliefs. In addition, naming of these newly-established schools have to be “ preferably in the indigenous language that is culturally and /or historically meaningful to the community.” Along with these are the need for 82 classrooms, which shall be implemented in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), KalahiCIDSS National Community-driven

Development Program (NCDDP). The newlycreated schools shall offer culture-based basic education in the context of IPs, consistent with the goals of the K to 12 Basic Education Program. All schools were directed to place their school ID on the roof in order to be captured in the Google map. Those with “nipa” and “cogon roofing” would certain to have their ID visible. Chief Allan L. Mansaladez of the Policy, Planning and Research Division was directed to ensure that all schools have IDs to facilitate the inclusion of school MOOE budget in the next budget cycle. In whatever way, assignments should be given to guide pupils in their study period. It should be checked and recorded to motivate pupils to study harder because they want to know and see the result or outcomes of they did before continuing their habit. They also need to be given praises and encouragement to inspire them to do the best. Therefore, the role of teachers and parents on the study habit of the children are very valuable. It’s a big challenge for us all that should be given importance.
