Speaking during the groundbreaking rites in the morning along its site at Osmeña Extension, Moreno said that the decision of Cebu Landmasters to invest here is a testament to the growing confidence of entrepreneurs of a sound business and political climate in the city.

TRENTO, Agusan del Sur -- A newly-elected town councilor who was the lone PDP-Laban bet here was shot dead by still unknown gunmen on Wednesday night while he and his wife were about to eat dinner outside their home in Ba-

rangay Poblacion.

Senior Police Inspector Alex Celiz, local police chief, said Sangguniang Bayan member-elect Chito Mabunga, 42, was shot six times at around 7:45 pm by two gunmen who were riding a tricycle.

The victim was pronounced dead on arrival af-

ter he was rushed to Franco Medical Hospital.

Two of Mabunga’s supporters, Alexis Arca and Rey Palma who was with him taking dinner were also hit by the series of gunfire survived while his wife Rose was not hit and managed to crawl inside their house.

NUJP: media corruption noted but not justification for killing

DAVAO City--The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP ) said it does not gloss over the fact that corruption is among the most pressing problems faced by the media and that this could be a reason for a number of media killings but “it is one thing to recognize a possible reason for murder; it is a totally different thing to present this as a justification for taking life.”

The NUJP issued the statement in reaction to President-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s statement in a press conference Tuesday night that most of the journalists who were killed were corrupt.

Cusp of a new era The NUJP said it was hopeful, following pronouncements the Presidentelect would push for the passage of the Freedom of Information (FOI) law and the recent announcement of his spokesperson, Petero Lavina, that he would constitute a special task force to investigate media killings, “that we were on the cusp of a new era when freedom of the press and of expression would be respected, defended and promoted beyond lip service.”

“Alas, it seems we were wrong. Or are we to be again treated to the excuse that it was all a joke and we need to be more discerning about your pronouncements?”

“Murder is no joke. Neither is press freedom,” it added.

In a statement, the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP) said it is “alarmed”

by Duterte’s “sweeping pronouncement which could embolden attacks on the working press.”

“While saying that most of the media killings were motivated by corruption involving the victims, the president-elect did not provide evidence that can be used to bring the perpetrators to justice nor condemn the killings to discourage future attacks,” the FOCAP said.

“You really want to know the truth?”

Duterte said “Kung papatayin ka talaga, papatayin ka (If they will kill you, they will kill you),” the Presidentelect said. “There’s no way to know that the next victim would be a journalist,” he said.

He said Pala was on the take and would collect money from one side to attack the other side.

“I do not demean his memory but he was a rotten son of a bitch,” Duterte said.

Pala, then a radio commentator of DXGO, was gunned down on September 6, 2003.

Duterte said upright journalists don’t get killed, most especially if they are reporting the truth.

“Most of you are clean,”

he told the media, “ but do not ever expect na itong mga journalists are all clean kaya namamatay yan sila.

Karamihan dyan nabayaran na. They take sides. Or sobrahan nila ang atake” (that’s why they’re being killed. Most of them are paid hacks. They take sides.

No justification Bagares said that even if Duterte’s allegations of media corruption is true, “it does not under any circumstance justify the assassination of journalists,” Bagares said.

Duterte explained that politicians are used to being hit by the media. “That’s okay. We’re used to that” but there are private individuals who cannot stand the shaming and harassment.

NUJP chair Rosauro said that while there may be instances where private individuals may have sought revenge against journalists for soiling their reputations, “the data shows that, of the handful of media killings that have actually made it to the courts, the accused are invariably from government – elected officials, government executives or members of the security services – and invariably accused of corruption.”

The NUJP cited, among others, ‘the murders of Edgar Damalerio of Pagadian City, Marlene Esperat of Tacurong City, and Gerry Ortega of Puerto Princesa City, and, of course, the most heinous of all, the November 23, 2009 Ampatuan massacre, of which 32 of the 58 victims were media workers, making it not only the worst case of electoral violence in recent Philippine history but the single deadliest attack on journalists ever.”

Oro mayor hails entry of Mesaverte residences

MAYOR Oscar Moreno yesterday hailed the entry of Mesaverte Residences, a new condominium at the heart of Cagayan de Oro, and personally welcomed executives of its developer Cebu Landmasters.

Speaking during the groundbreaking rites in the morning along its site at Osmeña Extension, Moreno said that the decision of Cebu Landmasters to invest here is a testament to the growing confidence of entrepreneurs of a sound business and political climate in the city.

“Prior to their entry here, I’m sure they have come up with feasibility studies and have deliberated thoroughly before coming up with their decision. And I’m certainly happy that they have entrusted their trust on us. They could have invested elsewhere but no, they decided to put up here,” Moreno told the audience during the ceremony which included Cebu Landmasters chief executive officer Jose

Soberano III. It was learned that Mesaverte Residences is Cebu Landmasters’ biggest investment so far outside Visayas.

Established in 2003, Cebu Landmasters boasts of 20 real estate developments in its folio. All of them are located within the province of Cebu.

In 2015, the company took a big leap forward and decided to invest in Cagayan de Oro. Its 8,740 square-meter site at Osmeña Extension is a prime neighbourhood that is near to malls, hospitals and universities.

The project is composed of three towers which will be built in two phases. Each building has 15 floors adjacent to each other and overlooking a central amenity area. The units offered are studio and one bedroom that are all combinable to suit individual needs.

Senators, reportedly, are promising their support to not just one but several senate president contenders.

Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano said he has 15 senators behind his bid for the senate leadership. On the other hand, Sen. Vicente Sotto III, also claimed he now has the support of 18 senators for an “alternative leadership.”

A resolution with the signatures of 15 senators is allegedly with Cayetano, a copy of which was seen recently by senator-elect Manny Pacquiao when he visited president-elect Rodrigo Duterte in Davao City.

But for Senator Sotto, the ‘Alternative Senate president’ of his 18-member group has not been decided yet. Sen. Koko Pimentel is among the 18. Sotto said there are 18 senators who have given their commitment to an alternative Sen-

ate president.

“Even among our 18 we still don’t know who will be our Senate president,” he explained. Sotto said Pimentel is part of the 18.

But PDP-Laban is backing Koko. Insiders said PDP-Laban would campaign for its president Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III as the next Senate president so that Duterte’s legislative agenda would not be “compromised.” President-elect Duterte is chairman of PDP-Laban party.

An insider indicated that while Duterte has kept his distance from the Senate presidency issue, he admitted that PDP-Laban’s political objective would not be achieved if the Senate president is not a PDPLaban member.

Indeed, how can the Duterte administration pursue its party’s legisla-

tive agenda if the Senate president is not a party member?

The Senate needs a full-time president, not a temporary leader because PDP-Laban wants to work overtime to lay out Duterte’s legislative agenda. Duterte has already promised Cayetano a Cabinet post after the one-year ban expires.

This means that Cayetano has to resign as senator after a year.

“This early the party is already laying out their action plan and one year would be a setback to our plans,” acoording to a PDPLaban official.

The 24 –member chamber belong to various blocs but any of them could be supportive to Koko. Liberal Party senators are: Franklin Drilon, Francis Pangilinan, Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, Ralph Recto and Leila de Lima. Incoming senator

Nancy Binay, Gregorio Honasan and Pacquiao belong to the United Nationalist Alliance.

The rest of the senators are either independent or are the lone representatives of their respective political parties. But in choosing the Senate President, the senators decide individually.

Blocs do not matter as far as the Senate is concerned according to Cayetano.

Thus, even if Koko has a PDP Laban block to speak of, the individual decisions of his colleagues in the senate can do miracles under President Duterte’s blessings.

What amazed me even more is the short period of three to six months within

which he will eliminate crime in this troubled country. He must have a magic formula to do this that would truly remove all doubts in our minds. I feel the excitement in my heart because we have been into political activities for decades and no single candidate ever told us the issue of peace. Whether there is truth to his vows to promote righteousness in our country remain to be seen.

By July 1, therefore, we must begin our moment to let him go off like a boat moving into the open ocean and watch.

The six-month period is not too long for us to wait. Perhaps, before we even realized, things are done in accordance to his pledges and will benefit all of us. Mr. Digong, go forward buddy and think we are behind you come what may. We take the same boat with prayers we shall reach success.

21 Barangay Agrarian Reform chairpersons take oath in AgSur PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur -- Twenty one (21) Barangay Agrarian Reform Committee (BARC) chairpersons of Esperanza, Agusan del Sur took oath before Hon. Erwin G. Ruiz, Provincial Agrarian Reform Adjudicator (PARAD) held reently at the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Provincial Office in San Francisco, this province.

The ceremony was done in order for the BARC to attest the master list of qualified Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) from the said municipality.

Two hundred forty two (242) farmers were qualified to become an ARB of the 50 landholdings covered under Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) with a total area of 428.0966

hectares.

“The farmers listed should be screened and identified thoroughly with the help of the BARC and thus, they are the one to confirm the legitimacy of the ARBs,” PARAD Ruiz pointed out.

One of the functions of the BARC contained in Sec. 47 of R.A. 6657 is to assist in the identification of the qualified beneficiaries in

the barangay and to attest the accuracy of the initial parcellary mapping of the beneficiary’s tillage.

Zambo Norte gears up for Saulog 2016

DIPOLOG City -- The provincial government of Zamboanga del Norte is gearing up for Saulog 2016 in celebration of its 64th Foundation Anniversary with various activities lined up from June 1 to June 6, 2016.

Saulog is a Visayan term which means celebration.

This is mainly a thanksgiving to God Almighty and not a festival as clarified by the provincial government.

Commission on Audit (COA) Chairman Atty. Michael G. Aguinaldo was the keynote speaker during

the opening program held yesterday, June 1, 2016 at the Zamboanga del Norte National High S cho ol (ZNNHS) grounds.

After the program, a costume parade followed with street dancing at Dipolog City Boulevard and fireworks display to make the night more festive and colorful.

The Agri-Tourism, Industrial and Trade Fair was officially opened with the participation of 23 local government units (LGUs) of Dipolog City, La Libertad, Sibutad, Sergio Osmeña, Roxas, Sindangan, Siayan, Salug, Liloy, Tampilisan,

Gutalac, Baliguian, Sirawai, Katipunan, Labason, Manukan, Siocon, Jose Dalman, Polanco, Godod, Rizal, Mutia and Leon B. Postigo.

During the week-long celebration, there will be sports competition on the deep sea fishing or jigathon, invitational offshore fishing, underwater photography, inter-LGU basketball challenge, open beach volleyball, age-group lawn tennis tournament, Gov. Berto Y. Uy Football Festival, frisbee tournament, BMX or bicycle motocross challenge, sikadsikad challenge and boxing.

Moreover, there will be other contests such as the

young corn and watermelon eating, “pinaka” with the biggest and sweetest fruits, poster making and TESDA Provincial Skills competition on body massage, haircutting, manicure and pedicure.

The Saulog Queen competition will highlight the said celebration and gather talented and beautiful ladies from different cities and municipalities of the province come June 4.

On June 5, Halad Pasalamat parade and program will be conducted to give praise and glory to the Lord Almighty for His continued outpouring blessings to the province and its people in

terms of fund assistance, projects, new assets, good business, good health, peace and harmony.

Meanwhile, June 6, 2016 has been declared as Special (Non-Working) Day in the province which marks its 64th Foundation Anniversary per Proclamation No.

1262, s. 2016.

DOLE 9 turns over P8.6M livelihood checks to ZamboSur

PAGADIAN City -- Eight (8) local government units in Zamboanga del Sur received today livelihood checks worth P8.6 million under the Department of Labor and Employment’s Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (DILEEP) and the Bottom-Up-Budgeting/ Grassroots Participatory Budgeting (BUB/GPB) at the DOLE Zamboanga del Sur Field Office here.

DOLE-9 Regional Director Sisinio B. Cano said DILEEP aims to enable the unemployed poor, seasonal and low-waged workers to start individual livelihood or collective enterprise undertakings with the goal of moving them out from poverty and make them productive.

The following LGUs received the Kabuhayan starter kits: Molave (31 skilled beneficiaries) P230,500; Tigbao (83 skilled beneficiaries) P564,400; Dinas (70 skilled beneficiaries) P476,000; San Pablo (47 skilled beneficiaries) P319,600 and Lower Guipos Farmers Association of Guipos for swine fattening (lechon type) P458,000.

The National Irrigation Administration Regional Office IX also received P4 million for El Niño intervention covering 1,328 farmer beneficiaries under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) program of the department.

Butuan City -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)Caraga, through the Social Pension, is calling the support of the Local Government Units (LGUs) of the region to adopt the scheme of fund transfer.

According to Sarah Rose Salingay, Focal Person of Social Pension, since the implementation of the fund

transfer in year 2013, there are only 53 LGUs in the region which adopted the said scheme after signing the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and passing the resolution during their session.

The following are the LGUs which adopted the scheme: Carmen, Jabonga, Kitcharao, Las Nieves, Remedios T. Romualdez, San-

tiago, Butuan, Esperanza, Loreto, Prosperidad, Rosario, San Francisco, Santa Josefa, Sibagat, Talacogon, Surigao City, Alegria, Burgos, Claver, Del Carmen, General Luna, Gigaquit, Malimono, Pilar, San Francisco, San Isidro, Santa Monica, Socorro, Taganaan, Bislig, Tandag, Barobo, Bayabas, Cagwait, Cantilan, Carmen, Carrascal, Cortes,

Fostering good moral in the classroom

Teaching is not only confined to sharing one’s knowledge and learning to your pupils and students; teaching is definitely more than making them understand the value of x and y and the value of good English in the academe.

Definitely, teaching is more than that, more than anything else.

Those pupils and students will always look up to their teachers as second parents, next to their mother and father, they always look up to their teachers as an epitome of goodness and perfection; thus, they will always look up to their teachers as a

treasure, a treasure with a great value that is seemingly priceless compared to many gems in the world.

Thus, one of the treasures teachers can impart to their pupils and students is the value of good moral in them. Good moral that would teach them to be good children of their parents, good citizens of the country and good children of God. It is a challenge. A challenge on how to foster this good moral on them; we as teachers, we should an example of goodness before we can pass it on to our pupils and students.

Since, school is the place where these “goodness” and

“good moral” are learned, fostered and practiced, teachers has a lot of fostering and maintaining to exercise.

Fostering good moral to pupils and students start from home and from making the Ten Commandments as their guide and principle to their everyday living. Instilling in their minds and hearts the value of goodness and good moral is a must for them to persevere in their studies and in their life.

Hence, we teachers must be a good example of it for them to follow.

Before we can foster good moral in the classroom, it is a must to foster it first to one self.

Every little thing we do entails our willingness to start and definitely end any activity or task we are into; be it at home, at school or at work, this willingness and commitment should be present.

If there is neither present, then for sure you cannot reach your end goal, your end objective. Others would require motivations and inspirations to finish any given task. Well, that how they go through it.

For us teachers, teaching is not just a requirement in life, not just a mere passing-by-work that is required to be finished on time; further it is not just merely just for a month-work but for a lifetime that best deserves passion and commitment to battle for general education, free education for our children of today and our children for tomorrow.

Teaching is an art,

teaching is passion; therefore, it is a call, a commitment that tends to be endured and accomplished until the end. Thus, before you decide to get teaching as a course in college, come to think of it not just once but a lot of times because once you are into it, you cannot easily, maybe not at all, go back and turn your back from teaching.

Not that easy.

This is a lifelong commitment, this is my art, this is my passion, and no one can take it away from me now because this is my life now. Teaching is definitely life, a life that is meant to be finished until the last breath. Therefore, we, I, the teachers of the present will continue to soar high in giving the best and profound education to our children and for the next and coming generations to come.

A total of 42 teams joined the recently held 4th Uptown Soccer Festival at Las Ramblas Parking Lot of SM City Cagayan de Oro. According to Luisito Maagad, president of Magis FC which

organized the tournament, the soccer festival in uptown Cagayan de Oro has been institutionalized to promote camaraderie about kids living in the various villages there who are mad about soccer.

“Cagayan de Oro has a vibrant soccer community. I can confidently say that our athletes

can compete outside CDO and reap wins,” Maagad said.

In the Under 17 girls category, Xavier University High School (XUHS) became champion, Higala C as first runner-up and Higala A as second runner-up. Higala FC was the Under 17 boys champ followed by XUHS as first

runner-up and Rosevale School as second runner-up. For the ladies open, the champion was JRFC Orange followed by Man U as first runner-up and Lady Adogs as second runner-up. The champion for the men’s open was Montecarlo followed by Hillsiders FC as first runner-up and Adogs FC as second runner-

up.

Champion teams snatched P5,000, the first runners-up had P3,000 and P1,000 was awarded to the second runners-up.

Magis FC was founded way back in 2003 with a group of mostly Xavier University college students who are in the football varsity squad.

Baguio, CAR -- The provincial government through its Provincial Tourism Office (PTO) is showcasing the rich cultural heritage and colorful tradition of the royal Maranao tribe in the on-going ‘Pasundayag sa Northern Mindanao 2016’ organized by the Department of Tourism Region 10 held at SM City-Baguio.

The Maranao or ‘people of the lake’ is the dominant ethnic group inhabiting the two Lanao provinces. Inhabitants of Lanao del Norte is a mixture of Maranaos and Cebuanos, with some Chabacanos, Tausugs, Yakan, and Bajau.

On May 29, Lanao del Norte teamed up with Iligan City government for their joint cultural presentation and audience participation activities.

The Lanao del Norte contingent is putting on display a miniature replica of the Torogan house. The ornately

decorated Torogan house is the official residence of the ruling Sultans and Datus of the Maranao people.

The Lanao del Norte Dance Ensemble also performed traditional Maranao dances like the Kapamalong, Pag-apir, and Singkil. They also played lively Kalilang music (maranao word for celebration) played through indigenous musical instruments like the kulintang, debaken and gong.

The Pasundayag event is an annual event organized by the Department of Tourism (DOT) – Region 10 and shown in different mega cities of Luzon.

“The Pasundayag sa Northern Mindanao is an iconic promotional activity of DOT-10 which showcases the culture, adventure and natural wonders of the 9 cities and 5 provinces in our region”, explained Supervising Tourism Officer Decius Esmedalla.

Among the LGUs represented include the provinces of Camiguin,
