“Golf for a Cause” breaks Pueblo attendance records

The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro’s “Golf for a Cause” drew a 276 registered players over its four-day period last Feb. 14-17, 2013 breaking club records for attendance of a single tournament at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club. “We wish to acknowledge the efforts of club members and the support of our sponsors in helping us achieve this milestone,” said PP Caloy Gorospe, project chairman. “Most of all, we wish to acknowledge the response of the participants to our invitation. Your demonstration of your civic duty for the Sendong victims has encouraged us to redouble our

efforts to help our unfortunate fellow Kagay-anon who suffered the fury of Sendong.” In particular, PP Caloy Gorospe cited the efforts of some club members which were crucial to the success of the project including PVP Hong C. DMPI relates NPA attack

CAGAYAN de Oro City – It all started at around 6:00 in the evening of February 19 when some 100 heavily armed men, belonging to the New People’s Army (NPA), struck on the plantation office of Del Monte Philippines, Inc. (DMPI) at Camp Philips, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon. Included in the attack was the company truck yard where three units of heavy equipment and a

personnel bus were burned by the rebels. In a press statement, DMPI said the attack began with an attempt by rebels to rob a Caltex gas station along Damilag road. The PNP responded swiftly, but an exchange of gunfire followed. It further said, the rebels further attempted to torch field equipment parked at Del Monte’s dmpi /P5

along Abellanosa Street in Cagayan de Oro City. C omelec provincial election supervisor Lawyer Cirilo Nala, who was invited to discuss Comelec rules and regulations, said the seminar organized for media reporters in the region is laudable, particularly in its effort to educate and prepare reporters covering the May 13 Automated Synchronized National, Local and ARMM Regional Elections. Past Philippine elections have been known as confrontational and bloody, and among those directly affected are members of the tri-media who were given the tasks of covering from campaign period to postelection days. The bloodiest among them all is the Maguindanao massacre that caused the death of 33 media practitioners who joined a caravan of a politician’s wife to file her husband’s candidacy for governor of Maguindanao province. Trial against the suspects belonging to the Ampatuan clan continues up to this time. Atty. Nala discussed several topics concerning the May polls, including Gun Ban, Philippine National Police Supervision and Control, Comelec Checkpoint and the Fair Election Act, among others. Aside from Atty. Nala, Froilan Gallarado of Mindanews was also invited

to talk about “Safety and Conduct in Covering the 2013 Elections” while Richel Umel of Agance France Press shared with the participants on “Ethics and Reporting Techniques.” Joe Felicilda, lead convener of MinPressDev and editor-in-chief of Mindanao Star, discussed important aspects of the topic, “How to Cover Political Campaigns.” He particularly coached participants on how to appear fair and balance in their reporting and not being bias in their coverage of the campaign. The seminar is the brainchild of Mediante, program director for the PPI project. Sudaria, CEO and publisher of the four newspapers under the BWM Group of Publications, supported the undertaking in partnership with Veterans Bank. Sudaria, in his message, extended his gratitude to all the participants for acknowledging the invitation, even as he thanked PPI for the initiative of holding the seminar with BWM Media Center and Veterans Bank. Another venture of BWM Media Center comes to fore on March 8, 2013, when it launches the BWM NewsCon, a weekly news conference that will tackle regional issues and concerns affecting Kagayanons and those in the neighboring areas here in Northern Mindanao.

ARMM passes free birth registration law By Apipa P. Bagumbaran

MARAWI City - A law allowing for easier birth registration has been passed in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman signed into law last week the Muslim Mindanao Autonomy (MMA) Act 293 otherwise known as the “Free Birth Registration Act of ARMM.” The new law enhances the usual process of birth registration in the region, including late registrations, removing the accompanying fees that often discourage parents from securing birth

certificates for their child. It also calls for the promotion of the importance of registering births among ARMM residents. The law was authored by Assemblywoman Rahima Datumanong Alba of the 2nd district of Maguindanao, who said MMA Act 293 is part of the commitment of the ARMM government to the country’s millennium development goals (MDG). “We want this law to be instrumental in securing some of the principal rights of every child in the ARMM,” she said.

It is also expected to help address problems that resulted from lack of authentic birth certificates among a considerable number of residents in the ARMM to allow the regional government to get a good evaluation of its population. Governor Hataman said in the past, a previous policy allowed a number of employees in the regional government who are believed to have reached or are beyond retirement age to continue in the service. “We hope the law will address problems like this in the coming years,” he said.

MARAWI City - The Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) here recently oriented new nurses hired under the Registered Nurses for Health Enhancement and Local Service (RN Heals) project. Dr. Amanollah Bantuas, chief of the Training Division of the Department of Health in Autonomous Region

in Muslim Mindanao (DOH-ARMM), facilitated the training. A background on the RN Heals project, family planning program, and maternal health programs were among the topics discussed during the orientation. IPHO said 50 registered nurses in the province qualified for the project.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona said RN Heals aims to improve access of the country’s poor to quality healthcare with social services by creating a pool of registered nurses with enhanced clinical and preventive health management competencies that will increase the nurses’ employability. The nurses, whether assigned in a hospital or health center, will

ESIP Step 4: Learn to Protect! “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” – Benjamin Franklin As the “E-S-I-P” paradigm goes: Earn. Save. Invest. Protect. Risk is an inherent part of life. We simply have no foolproof way of knowing what tomorrow may bring. As many would agree, “OGK” – only God knows! As you go out striving to attain financial security by building your financial fortress through honest means of earning, saving, investing and accumulating your assets, it pays to bear in mind the scout motto: “Be prepared.” Be ready to address all possible dangers and difficulties that lie ahead – more specifically, the financial perils and pitfalls that could occur. Lack of preparation could easily lead to your financial downfall. In life, financial challenges do come to everyone with no exception. It is as

The financial doctor Dr. Adonis Agcopra sure as the sun rises to greet each and every morning. A lot of these challenges are expected. If you have a child, you’d most likely want him or her to study in the best schools to gain better footing someday. This corresponds to a future cost that you should have prepared well in advance. But for those unpredictable misfortunes that behave much like the stormy weather that sporadically comes and goes, the big question to be wary about should be: “When is it coming?” Somehow, risk can be mitigated to a great extent. Risk protection is good preparation.

Without prior protective financial buffer mechanisms in place, any of your assets could potentially be wiped out even by a single financial disaster. Your hard-earned P5M could easily go up in smoke if your house burns down without property cover. You’d have to shell out another P1M to replace your car should it get totally wrecked without sufficient insurance. Your physical business assets and stock inventory should also be part of a comprehensive business protection strategy. At the end of the day, especially for those whose

income are still mostly actively generated, it should be very important not to miss out that you – your mind and body – are your greatest lifetime assets. All your other assets wouldn’t be around without you. Among the most important questions you might need to ask are: “If I cannot physically do the work expected of me due to sickness or disability, how big will its impact be to my loss of income? Do I have enough buffer in place? Are there significant others depending on my income? How financially tragic will it be for me, my family and my business, work or profession if I have no prior preparations made?” Your mental and physical capital rightly deserves all the adequate protection it should have. Be a good scout. Be ready and prepared. Be adequately protected. Act now!

ACIAR partners with ERDS in watershed rehab By Jorie C. Valcorza

CAGAYAN de Oro City - The Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), together with Ecosystems Research and Development Service-10 (ERDS-10), has started implementing the project, dubbed as Improving Watershed Rehabilitation Outcomes in the Philippines using a Systems Approach in Claveria, Misamis Oriental. The project aims to rehabilitate the Cabulig River Watershed in Claveria, Misamis Oriental.

An assessment on the status of selected National Greening Program (NGP) sites implemented in Claveria by the People’s Organization (PO) under the Community Based Forest Management (CBFM) sites was conducted. This is done to design the appropriate methods of improving the survival and early growth of the key species used in the NGP and identify better/alternative species that could fit-in to the three major concerns of the project in

the aspect of production, livelihood and environmental significance. The project would also identify the “best bet” native or indigenous forest tree species and appropriate silvicultural interventions for old forest plantations. Future activities of the project will include the characterization and vulnerability assessment of the watershed area to landslide, soil erosion, and flooding; the implementation of livelihood options for the members of the CBFM-POs in the site; and conduct of species trials in

the watershed. Dr. Jack Baynes from ACIAR sp e arhe ad t he project. With him were Prof. Arthur Pasa and Forester Roger Tripoli of the Visayas State College of Agriculture, Baybay, Leyte. The InfoBoard requires, however, that users would use Smart or Talk n Text SIM cards to enjoy the 30,000 allocation of free messages per month. Messages sent to non-Smart users will be billed P0.70. Among its uses is as an early warning communication tool for the people of the

80 barangays in the city, in case of emergencies, such as incoming typhoons, possible flooding or any disaster for that matter. With the InfoBoard, the 80 barangay captains can receive timely text messages through their cellphones from the City Disaster and Risk Reduction Manage-

ment Office giving them updates and specific instructions, all at no expense to the city or its subscribers. Aside from the CDRRMO, the City Information Office, the City Council, and other key offices may be tapped as additional content providers. (CIO/ PIA10/asf)

Fortunately, Del Monte employees who were trapped in their offices escaped unharmed. After the 30-minute encounter, the rebels escaped through the road to Dahilayan where they were pursued by the police and military. The Company, assisted by the PNP, military and local governments, has reinforced security measures to ensure the safety of its workers and the surrounding community. DMPI claimed, its operations were not affected by the incident and its key assets at the plantation and cannery have been safely secured. “It is unfortunate that this incident had to happen and we are unaware of the reasons why the rebels committed such acts of violence,” the press statement also said. Del Monte has been operating in Bukidnon for the last 87 years, and it has provided gainful employment to over 20,000 people across 10 municipalities, the source related. Del Monte claims to have undertaken numerous sociocivic projects that continue to improve the lives of many families in the province. To overcome these constraints, the DOT plans to undertake strategic directions and programs—such as improvement of market access, connectivity and destination infrastructure; The DOT said the implementation of the NTDP would raise the contribution of the tourism sector to 8.1 percent of the gross domestic product from the current 5.8 percent; and “directly employ 6.8 million that will account for 17 percent of total employment.” The 10 million tourist target of the NTDP is expected to increase the tourism sector’s GDP percentage to 9% by 2016.

MAMBAJAO, Camiguin Sixty nine operational day care centers (DCC) here continue to implement the Essential Health Care Program (EHCP) benefitting some 2,383 preschoolers. For three years, adequate supplies of toothbrushes, fluoride toothpaste “poly paste”, lice shampoo and hand soap were provided to preschoolers. The Barangay Councils on the other hand look after

the needs of the DCCs in maintaining their respective center’s dental traps. The project was initiated by Fit for School Foundation and has been sustained by the provincial government over the years. It originally covers grade levels 1 to 4 elementary students, and later expanded to cover all pre-schoolers, as well. Aside from receiving hygiene kits, the children

likewise undergoes regular deworming activities. The success of EHCP in the province has garnered recognition from the Philippine Institute for Development Studies. Meanwhile, the DCCs here are also beneficiaries of the 120 days supplemental feeding program, last year, amounting to P2-million, excluding of kitchen utensils that were also provided for POLICE MOTORCYCLES - Police Regional Office-10 (PRO 10) turns-over the newlythem. CEB, DOT partner to push ZC- CDO air link to boost travel and tourism By Mike Baños

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The country’s leading domestic airline and the Department of Tourism are working both ends of the new direct air route between the cities of Zamboanga and Cagayan de Oro to ramp up travel and tourism between the two destinations. “With the new air route, it is now easy, cheap and convenient for people from both cities to visit each other’s cities for a brief holiday,” noted Mary June G. Bugante, regional director of the Dept. of Tourism for Region IX. “Knowing how different the two cities are, we look forward to more tourists from Region X visiting us in the same manner people from here look forward to visiting Northern Mindanao.” Cebu Pacific flies from Cagayan de Oro to Zamboanga three times a week every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Before the direct air route was opened last October 20, 2012, commuters had the option of either taking a 12 hour bus ride (with 5-stops in between) or fly some 1,650 kilometers via Manila or five times the 330 kms. that actually separates the two Mindanao cities. “Even if the direct flights are more expensive than the bus, many would still opt to fly, considering the health and safety considerations inherent in any 12-hour overland trip,” said Catalino E. Chan III, regional director for DOT Region 10. “However , a commuter can secure a fare even lower than the bus if he books early.” “I booked our flight last December 2012 for our Centennial Alumni Homecoming at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University as soon as the flight was started, “ said Ramon Raciv Escudero, a native Zamboangueño who now resides and works in Cagayan de Oro. “As a result, I paid even less than what I would have paid for a bus.” Tourism and airline officials have organized trips by travel writers from Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga to benchmark the new air route. The first group of travel journalists from Zamboanga visited Cagayan de Oro last November 27-29, 2012 while Kagay-anon travel writers returned the favor just last Feb. 12-14, 2013. “To further promote interregional travel, DOT Northern Mindanao plans to hold its annual month-long Pasundayag sa Northern Mindanao cultural festival in Iloilo and Bacolod instead of Metro Manila as it has traditionally been done in the past,” Mr. Chan noted. At present, CEB operates 60 domestic and 31 international routes. Two international routes being offered will commence later this year: Manila-Bali on March 16, 2013 and Manila-Dubai on October 7, 2013. Cagayan de Oro’s Lumbia Airport is the regional hub for air commuters from the four provinces and nine cities of Northern Mindanao (Region X) but serves passengers from as far as the Caraga, Lanao and Zamboanga regions. It is the second busiest airport in Mindanao in terms of air passenger traffic and cargo

volume. CAAP figures show it accommodated 14,644 flights; 1,471,432 passengers and handled 22,244,562 kgs. of cargo in 2011. Similarly, Zamboanga International Airport is the regional trunkline airport for Western Mindanao, serving passengers as far as Tawi-Tawi and Sulu. CAAP figures show it served 16 percent more passengers than the previous year for a total of 724,128 passengers. Cebu Pacific is widely credited with sparking the boom in domestic travel and tourism with its drastically reduced fares, en-
