AGAYAN de Oro City – Public utility drivers and operations of Northern Mindanao have challenged the senatorial candidates to respond to people’s call for a control in oil price hikes.

The call was aired by transport groups even as they enjoin the rest of the Filipino people in their aspiration for a clean and honest election.

Considering the high legislative powers bestowed upon the senate, we therefore challenge the senatorial candidates to respond to the woes not only of the transport sector, but also of the general public, to control the almost weekly increases in oil prices,” said PISTON Spokesperson Jaylord Guiao.

As of February 5, 2012, she observed, price hike include P1.05 per liter for premium gasoline, 75 centavos per liter for regular gasoline, 45 centavos per liter for diesel and kerosene, marking the third week that prices of oil products have gone up.

“These prices are even set to increase as projected by Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho L. Petilla due to the recent movements and tensions in oil producing Middle East,” Ms. Guiao stated.

EDUCATION Secretary Armin Luistro has set March 18 or 19 this year as graduation rites for Grade 6 pupils and senior students in all public schools nationwide.

In a statement published in Inquirer’s website, Luistro also reiterated his order to hold “Spartan” or austere graduation rites without any politicking.

With the campaign underway for the May 13, 2013 general elections, candidates are expected to take advantage of school graduation ceremonies to gain mileage.

He stressed that gradua-

tion rites should be memorable, exciting and animated without baggage of extra cost and excessive spending.

“Graduation rites should not be exercises in splurging and displays of pomp and pageantry but should be Spartan affairs which exhort civic duties, a sense of community and personal responsibilities,” he said in his order issued Monday.

Luistro reiterated the DepEd’s policy to conduct graduation rites “in an appropriate solemn ceremony” and that these “shall not be used as political forums.”

Education is the acquisition of knowledge necessary for a living. It also serves as a passport towards the attainment of one’s goal.

But why are some students neglect their studies? Don’t they know the importance of education in their lives ?

Education keeps man away from ignorance. Through education, he learns to read, write and communicate with other people. He becomes more confident in facing the public. He also learns about culture and traditions, public relations, good values and others.

Nowadays,it is very dif-

ficult if a person is lack of education. He can be easily fooled by someone who is superior than him because he is lack of knowledge and feels hesitant to defend himself, in seeking a job, one of the qualification is the educational attainment. The one who has good education has the more chances of being employed that the person who achieves less.

For this reason, the government gives a great importance on education. In fact,it is mandated compulsory elementary education to all children who reach at the right age under Article XIV,

Section 2 of the constitution.

Under this law, the children are given equal opportunities to enroll in elementary so their skills will be developed.

After elementary education, they can proceed to secondary education because it is given free. Now, because of K+12 curriculum, students who cannot pursue their tertiary education because of financial constraints has an option to look for a job using the knowledge and skills that her learned. But for those who can afford can pursue their tertiary education and have a degree.

After all, education is an

investment that no one can take away from it.

If a person uses his education wisely, it will become his key to a successful life. Many men and women who are very poor from the start but because of good education, perseverance, and faith in God, they became successful and have achieved a lot in life. So, why we should let our youths take education for granted ? Let’s encourage to do well in their studies so that they will become more zestful to learn. If they sow good seeds today, they will reap a good harvest tomorrow. That is, a successful life.

No collection of graduation fees

AS graduation rites for public schools nationwide draw nearer, Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Armin Luistro warned heads of public school from collect-

ing graduation fees.

Luistro also barred the schools’ heads from collecting any kind of contribution for the graduation rites.

He discouraged school

from requiring “extravagant special attire or choosing an extravagant venue” for the graduation ceremonies.

Imposing to students nonacademic projects as requirements for graduation are not allowed by the education department, said Luistro

adding, coming out for a “yearbook” for graduation batch must be in voluntary basis.

However, he said school officials can receive donations from Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) either in cash or in kind for the ceremonies.

Likewise, Luistro reminded schools’ heads to focus its graduation theme to the K to 12 (Kindergarten to Grade 12) basic education reform which the House of the Representatives passed last month.

4P beneficiaries get P18.5M seed capital

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Feb. 13 (PIA) -- A total of P18,523,000 seed capital from the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has been released to 3,435 Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino beneficiaries in Lanao del Norte province recently.

Graduation theme must focus on K+12, says Luistro

WITH the passage of the Kindergarten to Grade 12 bill in the House of the Representatives, a top education official urged heads of schools to focus its graduation theme on the K+12.

Armin Luistro, secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), has earlied set the date for the graduation rites of Grade 6 pupils and fourthyear high schools on March 18 or 19.

As the graduation rites draw nearer, Luistro has reminded the heads of schools that the theme must revolve around the k+12 basic education program.

The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

The K+12 basic education program has six salient features. These are (1) Strengthening early childhood education (Universal Kindergarten) (2) Making the curriculum relevant to learners (Contextualization and Enhancement) (3) Ensuring integrated and seamless learning (Spiral Progression) (4) Building proficiency through language (Mother TongueBased Multilingual Education) (5) Gearing up for the future (Senior High School) and (6) Nurturing the holistically developed Filipino (College and Livelihood Readiness, 21st Century Skills) The K to 12 reform, which makes Kindergarten mandatory and adds two years of senior high school for a 12-year basic education curriculum, awaits the President’s signature to become law although the DepEd started to implement the program in 2011.

Under the livelihood program, beneficiaries are allowed to get loans ranging from P5,000 to P10,00 for their livelihood projects, Atty. Araceli F. Solamillo, DSWD Field Office 10 Regional Director, said.

These loans, which are community-based that do not bear any interest and do not need any collateral, are payable in one year so that others can also borrow under the same set of arrangements, Solamillo said.

In Kapatagan town, the 57 SKAs with 1,035 members

received P5,772,000 while the 41 SKAs with 865 members in Lala were granted P4,442,000.

The Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries of the interior municipalities ofNunungan, Salvador, and Sapad received P400,000; P1,330,000, and P875,000, respectively.

Meanwhile, Sultan Naga Dimaporo town beneficiaries with 50 SKAs have P5,704,000 for their seed capital loan.

These beneficiaries, according to their project proposal, will be engaging in different types of livelihood projects such as handicraft making, hog fattening, cooking, buy-

and-sell, among others.

The SKA members are all Pantawid Pamilya Set 1 grantees.

Aside from the 4P beneficiaries, qualified to borrow are those listed in the National Housing Targeting System (NHTS), Solamillo added.

To ensure the success of the SLP, a five-component program that starts with a partnership-building with the community, local government units have been developed by DSWD. Included in the process is the social preparation involving a Participatory Livelihood Is-

sue Analysis and Value Chain Analysis, as well as Financial Literacy and Self-Awareness for the beneficiaries.

Capacity-building, including a Business Development Service and three to five-day trainings for the beneficiaries follow, after which the funding for the Micro Finance Institutions (MFI) comes about.

For sustainability of the program, DSWD-10 extends technical assistance and equips the beneficiaries with a management tool which the beneficiaries themselves implement. (Oliver Badel Inodeo/ DSWD/RTP/PIA10)

GRADUATING high school students can soon avail of the government’s science and technology (S&T) scholarship program after the House of the Representatives approved on third and final reading House Bill 6860.

Agham Partylist Rep. Angelo Palmones, one of the authors of HB 6860, said students who have failed to make it to the top five graduating class but have

high grades in science and mathematics can be granted scholarship under the new measure.

The measure amended the Science and Technology Act of 1994, said Palmones adding, “the present science and technology scholarship program covers only the top five students from science high schools.”

The lawmaker said: “One good provision of this measure is that the scholarship

grant is not limited to the graduates of a science high school and the top five students.”

Under the bill, science scholars are mandated to take courses that go along with the lines of priorities identified by the government, consistent with the prevailing and emerging industry and service sector requirements and priority investments, contained in the Philippine development

plan.

Feeding program: An Intervention of Malnutrition By : Roy M.Madronero OIC - Linabo Elementary School

“ Health is Wealth.” This popular saying encourage people to take care of their health because a healthy person can do many things in order to make his/her life better. However, we can’t deny the fact that many of our fellowmen especially the children are suffering from malnutrition. How can they achieve their dreams in life if they are sickly ?

This is the reason why some schools take their part in order to minimize the malnourished children in their respective schools through feeding program. The class adviser get the Body Mass Index (BMI) of every pupil in order to identify if they belong to wasted, normal, or above normal. The results of the nutritional status are then forwarded to the district nurse, then to the division head nurse.

An assistance awaits for those schools who have wasted or malnourished children. The assistance given include rice, eggs, milk and others. But because of the limited supply, the teachers take initiative to encourage the pupils to bring the Crane Herons from their habitat.

The sounds of Frogs mating in the paddy ponds have long disappeared and now replaced by the roaring engines of the Backhoes and Bulldozers breaking the grounds for road and drainage.

There is nothing wrong with development as long as it is sustainable.

Living creatures and crustaceans such as Crabs, Mudfish, Herons and Frogs do not contribute to the cuppers of Butuan and Surigao.

The region welcomes instead the mining and real estate developers to create more mineral exports and housing projects to increase its tax revenues and fund various government expenditures to the detriment of the environment.

Never mind if we are a signatory to the United Nations General Assembly on Eco-tourism as a key to eradicating poverty by protecting the environment.

The UN protocol calls for member countries to adopt p olicies that promote ecotourism highlighting its impact on job creation and creating

some vegetables for feeding.

The schedule for the feeding varies from one school to another school. In Linabo Elementary School through the leadership of Mr. Roldan Azumbrado -Principal 1 and Mr. Roy M. Madronero - OIC, they make a point that every Thrusday of the week they can have their feeding for all the pupils the said school.

For the malnourished children, they are given more opportunities for the feeding program. At least once a day,they will be given nutritious foods so they can have a healthy mind and body. This program may not totally solve the problem of malnutrition but it enables the pupil to experience the good taste of vegetables that their teachers/parents prepare for them.

An experience that they will hardly forget until they grow old and pass to the next generation the importance of proper nutrition to have an active mind and body so that schooling and better performance in other aspect of life will be made easy. opportunities for conservation and sustainable biodiversity.

Rotary-Nissan golf for charity hits record-high registration

HE Golf-for-a-Cause, organized by the T Rotary Club of Cagayan

de Oro in partnership with Nissan Universal Motors Corporation, intended for the victims of Typhoon Sendong, is one of the most wellattended games with 40 percent of the golfers who registered were out-of-towners, including foreigners, organizers said.

The four-day game kicked off Thursday with some 250 registered players who will be clubswaying their best to aim for a hole-in-one to drive home a Navara pickup vehicle, courtesy of Nissan Motors.

Carlos Gorospe, Rotary Club of CDO past president and project chair of the golfing event, said they were forced to increase the number of players to 250 from a ceiling of 200 because of the huge number of golfers who wanted to join the game, being held at the world-class Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club here in Cagayan de Oro. Gorospe told media

practitioners during the press conference Thursday, at the Pueblo de Oro Country Club that aside from the golfers who came from Manila, Cebu, Davao and Gensan, foreign golfers from United States, Australia, Korea and Japan were among those who will be playing in the sprawling 7,000 meters golf course here at Upper Balulang.

Proceeds of the game will go to the establishment of a training center at Idahag Relocation Site, which houses 1,700 households displaced by Tropical Storm Sendong in 2011, Marillo Paano, club president, announced at the press conference.

Nissan Universal Motors Corporation and Nissan Cagayan de Oro will be giving away brand new Navara pickup to the first hole-inone winner. Organizing Rotarians, for their part, will give away P100,000 to other hole-in-one winners in three par 3 holes.

“It’s time to give back to Cagayan de

Oro what it has given to Nissan, especially if it is intended for Sendong victims,” Jeff Rolida, head of Nissan Cagayan de Oro, said, referring to the success in sales of Nissan here in the city.

Justine Sugay, Brand assistant manager of Nissan Universal Motors Corporation, said Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oo can expect future partnerships with the success of the golfing event and due to its purpose of helping people improve their livelihood. “Better living condition is good for business ventures like Nissan’s,” Sugay said.

Other prizes and awards include for those with the lowest gross and lowest net (36 holes); Class Champions and Runners-up for Class A, B, C and D (18 holes) and also to the Ladies Champion.

Also at the press conference were former mayor Tinnex Jaraula, chai rma n o f Ro tary Foundation, and Boyet Lamas, representing the Sedong victims at Idahag.
