Multi-sector group calls : Hoops, pwera kampanya!!! stop ‘golden’ rice trade By Mark A. Cervantes

A nationwide movement of NGOs, schools, religious groups, farmers, environmentalists, artists and indigenous peoples is urging government to stop releasing golden rice due to health and environmental risks, as well as violations of other constitutional rights. “We will be exposing a very high number of Filipino people to these unnecessary risks, since 89% of 55 million Filipinos eat rice, and 12M Filipino farmers depend on rice farming for livelihood,” Normita Ignacio, executive director of the South

East Asian Regional Initiatives for Community Empowerment (SEARICE). SEARICE is part of the broad movement opposing for the commercialization of Golden Rice. The government has not conducted any independent tests to determine the effect of golden rice to the Filipino’s health and environment, Ignacio said. She added that recent developments in Europe have also discovered the existence of the ‘cauliflower virus’ in the ordinary gene sequence of GMOs, which poses dangerous health risks to humans; and prevents the plant to express resistance to pests and

diseases. “The discovery of the cauliflower virus in December 2012, has confirmed civil society arguments that GMOs are unhealthy and destroys the environment,” Ignacio said. Golden rice was infused with bacteria to express vitamin A, but Ignacio said it does not cure Vitamin A deficiency or VAD. “VAD can be cured by a balanced diet, not from rice alone. A balanced diet can only be obtained from a diversity of nutritious foods on the dining table, because for the human body to make use of vitamin A, it must have soluble golden /P5

CAGAYAN de Oro City – Hukom sa Korte Suprema… ‘walay early campaigning’. Kini nga reminder gipalanog ni City Election Officer Alile A. Ramirez tumong ngadto sa tanang local candidates ning dakbayan. “Dili unta ta mangampanya kay wala pa may actual nga local campaign period,” awhag ni Atty. Ramirez.

CAGAYAN de Oro City Pag-IBIG Fund will once again claim Valentines Day, as the “Araw ng Pag-IBIG” by sponsoring a civil mass wedding for its actively saving members at the cities of Malaybalay and Valencia. Dubbed as “I Do. I Do. Araw ng Pag-IBIG”, the affairs will be co-sponsored by both city governments.

In Malaybalay City, 101 couples will participate in the aforementioned Civil Mass Wedding to be officiated by City Mayor Ignacio W. Zubiri, while, Valencia City Mayor Leandro Jose Catarata over the 75 couples. The ceremonies will take place at the respective covered courts. Similar events will also be held in the cities of

Davao and Makati and other areas in the country, co-sponsored by the local government units. Pag-IBIG Fund Cagayan de Oro Branch’s Department Manager and officers will also distribute souvenir items and gifts to the newly

wedded couple. Furthermore, Pag-IBIG Fund will award a house and lot package as a grand prize to the lucky newly wedded couple, from among the participating couples nationwide. The property will be chosen from Pag-IBIG Fund’s pool of acquired assets valued at around P400, 000. In a recent interview

with Reynaldo and Maricel Evangelio, winners of the house and lot package in last year’s “I Do. I Do. Kasalan Ng Bayan;” they gratefully acknowledged “ang amo lang man unta nga makasal kami para mas-grasyahan ang among pagpanimuyo. Apan sa wala damha nga nakaangkon kami og libreng balay ug yuta pinaagi sa Pag-IBIG Fund.” (We simply desired to

be married, so as to be given more grace in our union. It was an unexpected but a joyful surprise for us to own a house and lot package, thru Pag-IBIG Fund.) They further expressed their appreciation to Vice President Jejomar Binay and to Pag-IBIG Fund Chief Executive Officer Darlene Berberabe for spearheading the “I Do. I Do. How to Involve the External Stakeholders in the School Program By: Orlando Tinaco, T-111 Husayan Elem. School, Kadingilan District

For more than ten years of real teaching - learning experiences, I have observed that the schools’ external stakeholders are great factors of successful school management. In all areas of concern and in multifarious school-based activities, the GPTA,barangay and municipal officials play a crucial role in catering the needs of the learners, the main core of educational process. The aforementioned stakeholders are also the main resources. They are also the limbs and brains in decision making process. They are the backbone of educational successes as well as the arms and legs of multifarious school programs and activities. They are the nerves of the educational system for without them, the school remains ineffective and the vision of quality education is nowhere to achieve. External stakeholders are always there side by side to extend services in all DepEd thrusts and programs such as National Brigada Eskwela,

Child-Friendly School Program, School First Initiative and Every Child a Reader. They can be tapped in Tree Planting Activities, Search for Kiddie King and Queen,Educational Week Program, Family Day, Buwan ng Wika Celebration, Nutrition Month Celebration and the like. The barangay and municipal officials can also extend their financial support in providing the needs of the school’s athletes, journalists, MTAP,YES-O, Step Contestants. They also can help raise funds to augment the income generating program of the school. More or less, they can help ease the burden of financial problems which currently face by most public school in the present situation. External stakeholders are spinal cords that connect the brain of both teachers and learners in the four walls of the school They can’t be separated but interconnected. They must work together for the common good and for the welfare of

the school’s culture and traditions. They must function in full energy and enthusiasm for without the fuel of selfless interest, the learners’ academic performance would be affected. In most cases, the external stakeholders should be the voice of the right decision making. The action of all schools’ projects and innovation lies in the collaborative efforts and energy of the teachers and school heads. It shallow misunderstanding and factions might happen, a conflict management should always be employed in the school in order to achieve better and harmonious relationships and to maintain excellent linkages and trusts. No matter what school the school leader manages, the most effective strategy is fostering excellent linkages of external stakeholders. Are you ready to be a school leader? Then, try to employ these practices in your school and you will be amazed the differences.

Mo-score pud panagsa, mangyawat madugangan ang pakan-on.

BROWNOUT dayon.

Ingon pa sila, “Money will make everything possible.” Kay ang tawo kuno nga moingon og money can’t make you happy kay kadto ra nga mga tawo who doesn’t know where to shop!

Ignacio added that the government has not conducted information campaigns and public consultations on the looming release of golden rice, especially among rice farmers who will be severely affected with its release. “2013 was declared by President Noynoy Aquino to be the national year of rice, so that the Philippines can attain self-sufficiency in rice, and for the Philippines to be able to export our traditional varieties, but these noble goals will be destroyed with the release of golden rice,” Ignacio said. Rotary-Nissan Partnership Drives Golf for a Cause

THE Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro (Mother Club) and Nissan-Universal Motors Corporation (assembler and distributor of the Nissan Patrol, Murano, Navara and Urvan) have joined forces to ensure the success of “Golf for a Cause” on February 1417, 2013 at the world-class Pueblo de Oro Golf Course in Cagayan de Oro City. “The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro (RC CDO), Rotary Foundation and Nissan-Universal Motors Corporation (Nissan-UMC) are coming together to raise funds for a training center for the Indahag Relocation Site which houses 1,700 households displaced by Tropical Storm Sendong,” said Marillo Paano, club president. “With the cooperation of Habitat for Humanity, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the city government and concerned citizens, the center will provide basic technical skills for both men and women to help them seek employment,” he further said. Mr. Paano added, “Because of the global partnership of Nissan and Habitat for Humanity International, the desire to strengthen our

consumer base in Cagayan de Oro, and the opportunity to provide sustainable livelihood to the Sendong victims, it was an easy decision to partner with the Mother Club in this year’s “Golf for a Cause”, said Honeymae A. Limjap, assistant vice president, marketing and sales, Universal Motors Corporation. “Together with our local partner Nissan Cagayan de Oro, we hope that this golf tournament is only the beginning of a long term relationship with the business community of CDO.” Carlos Gorospe, past president and project chair, said they are inviting fellow Rotarians and golfers from all over the region to enjoy the tournament and help do their bit in helping the Sendong victims. “We will be giving away a brand new Nissan Navara pick-up courtesy of Nissan Universal Motors Corporation and Nissan Cagayan to the hole-in-one winners,” said PP Gorospe. “We will also give away P100, 000 to other hole-in-one winners in three par 3 holes.” Other prizes/awards await participants with the lowest gross and lowest net rotary /P5

Rodelsa Hall

Rodelsa Hall: Home of the Arts in Mindanao When one thinks of music, culture and the performing arts, only one venue comes to mind- Rodelsa Hall. Established exactly eight years ago this month, Rodelsa Hall has become the center for quality entertainment and groundbreaking performances in Mindanao. Theater Productions like Liceo U’s King and I, Sound of Music, Cinderella, Jesus Christ Superstar, Oliver, and Romeo and Juliet became unforgettable hits that blazed the trail in the school based productions. Not just that, Rodelsa Hall became the center for showcasing quality European films as it partners with the European Union (EU) in bringing to the community awardwinning films via Cine Europa, a free exhibition of around 21 films from the member states of EU. The festival is now on its fifth year at the hall. Classical music concerts also became more accessible as Rodelsa Hall premiered memorable performances from great artists like pianists Ingrid Sala Santamaria, Dr. Abel Galang, Peter von Wienhardt, Carmencita Aspiras among others. Other renowned artists that had the chance to grace the hall were tenors Sal Malaki and Dave Clark Sibonga, sopranos Evelyn Mandac, Antoni Mendezona and Daylinda Dagondon. The Kabayao Family Quintet also had the chance to perform and wowed the crowd with their engaging performances. Others include Diomedes Saraza, the violin prodigy from Juilliard School and violinist extraordinaire Joseph Esmilla , Cellists Victor Coo and Emily Duffil (Australia). After quite some time, Cagayan de Oro music lovers also had the rare moment to experience an orchestra concert when Manila Symphony Orchestra graced the stage with international pianist and the pride of Cagayan de Oro, Rudolf Pelaez Golez as soloist in an SRO performance last 2010. This year, Rodelsa Hall celebrates the 58th Founding Anniversary of Liceo de Cagayan University and the National Arts Month with another groundbreaking performance courtesy of the Cebu Philharmonic Orchestra, Unites the World Project Orchestra of Japan and international pianist Rudolf Pelaez Golez in a one night engagement this coming February 16, 2013. This special event is for the benefit of Safer River Life Saver Foundation, Inc. This will be the first time that the hall will gather together 50 musicians in one stage. To know more about the concert and other upcoming performances at Rodelsa Hall, please feel free to call 09176366528 or (088) 8584093 to 95 local 109. See you at Rodelsa Hall!
