Investing With Managed Funds : Part 3 The investment pyramid concept provides an effective overview of all investment instruments available at your disposal, with particular emphasis to their overall profiles in terms of risk, return, and liquidity considerations. Revisiting the investment pyramid, we get a glimpse of the importance of keeping a balanced investment portfolio. Having foundational investment strategies that preserve your capital keeps your pyramid in a stable state. A pyramid with a firm and stable base gives you a better foothold to grab incidental opportunities offered by higher-yield, higher-risk investments in the upper levels without having to sacrifice your financial stability. Comfortably positioned in the middle of the investment pyramid, managed funds give you a balanced risk, return, and liquidity leverage. But do managed funds such as mutual funds offer
you any additional advantage? Here are a few of the more important ones to begin with. Managed funds are liquid – there is easy recovery of your cash should the need arise. You also get the advantage of instant diversification. In contrast to direct stock investing, with equity funds you get to purchase a basket of stocks with the same invested amount. This provides you the unique setup of indirectly managing and spreading your levels of exposure to investment risk. Since your individual resources are pooled with that of several other investors, you harness the collective investing power and strength of the entire group. Thus, a managed fund strategy can take you directly to the securities markets, which is usually available only to a few select investors with large investible funds. With certain mutual fund companies allowing you an investment account opening
The financial doctor Dr. Adonis Agcopra with as little as PhP5,000, this strategy can even be affordable to individuals in the lower income groups. If you are that type of investor who doesn’t have enough luxury of time to actively track volatility issues in stock trading, then managed funds might suit you better. With professionally trained investment analysts and fund managers doing the legwork in a dynamic market, you can perhaps worry a little less and attend to other more pressing matters. Furthermore, with proper regulations now in place, you can have more peace of mind. In the case of mutual fund companies which are regulated by the Securities
and Exchange Commission (SEC), these investments are now more transparent, have detailed prospectuses and disclosure proceedings, and with a custodian bank in place. With a recently upgraded Philippine economy on the upswing, managed fund investing could be one of your greatest opportunities to ride the prosperity wave. Investigate before you invest, and make your money work for you. Do it now! ----(Dr. Adonis Agcopra, MBA, CIS, RFC® is with the IARFC and is portfolio director of AFIC Meridian Consultants. ARMM reform agenda continues to bear fruit By Apipa P. Bagumbaran
MARAWI CIT Y - The bureaucratic reforms introduced in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) yielded unprecedented savings and have put a stop on influence peddling and other anomalous practices that have come to define ARMM. This was emphasized by ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman in his presentation during the visit of President Benigno S. Aqino III to Cotabato City, Friday. The President made his first ever visit to the seat of the ARMM government to check on the reforms being instituted by his appointed caretakers in the 23-year
old regional institution. He listened to a 15-minute presentation that highlighted the remarkable performance of the region’s caretaker administration in its 15 months in office. During his visit, Hataman provided a rundown of ongoing projects and the overall status of reforming the institution that has been previously dubbed as a “failed experiment” by President Aquino. The regional caretaker cited the savings generated by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the region from its 2012 budget, which amounts to P136.362 million, through fiscal prudence and the enforcement of open and competitive
biddings. The savings were not pocketed, Hataman said, but used by the agency to procure 13 heavy equipment and 15 motor vehicles and nine survey instruments. DPWH-ARMM Secretary Emil Sadain said the acquisition was first of its kind in 22 years. “Wala ng palakasan, wala ng lagayan (No more influence peddling, no more bribery),” he said. Hataman said the regional government no longer allows the hiring and promotion of employees based on influence or reasons that do not warrant their qualification. A special screening board has been set up to
oversee hiring and promotion in the regional government, he said. Hataman further said the reforms they started are primarily meant to curb corruptions in the region, but, apparently, they have also caused the optimization of government funds. “The president supported the deferment of the s cheduled ARMM elections in 2011 to make way for needed reforms in the ARMM. Now, key improvements are starting to take hold a year and three months after his appointed officials took on the regional leadership,” a civil society organization (CSO) worker observed. Once elected into office, Villar said she will pursue her long-time advocacies of promoting livelihood opportunities through small and medium term business enterprises, provide the necessary climate that will bring out more jobs and better social services. To address the concerns affecting the over 12 million Filipino migrant workers abroad, Villar said she will pursue the enactment of her legislative measure mandating the creation of the Department of Overseas Filipino Workers. Villar said it was essential for the executive department to have a separate department for OFWs to centralize all services and functions of OFWrelated government agencies or bureaus. Villar said a number of them were reported to be maltreated by abusive employers and subjected to other forms of injustices. diay ang mga vendors.

President Aquino
OZAMIZ CITY - President Benigno S. Aquino III has urged the people of Misamis Occidental to walk with him in the straight path of inclusive growth even as he thanked them for giving him the mandate in the 2010 elections. Donning his signature yellow T-shirt with black shoulder patch, the President, with Secretary Mar Roxas of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in tow, arrived
in Ozamiz City from General Santos City, last April 27, to meet the local leaders at the Misamis University (MU) Gym in the city. It was his first time to visit the province, since he assumed the Presidency and he took time to thank the Misamisnons for giving him a landslide victory as the highest public official of the land, three (3) years ago. He then thanked Dr. Sonia Feliciano, owner of the MU, for it was here where he said he launched his campaigns in the Second
Wood processing stoppage affects sawlog production By Jennica Rojas
CAGAYAN DE ORO - The lower demand for sawlogs brought about by the closure of some wood processing plants has affected the total volume of sawlogs produced in Region 10 during 2012. Reports gathered by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA-10) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-10) show that the total annual production of sawlogs in the region decreased by 63 percent in 2012 compared to the production volume of 29,862.18 cubic meters in 2011. These plants could not renew their permits as they failed to satisfy the requirement of Executive Order (EO) No. 23 for wood processing plants to present proof of sustainable sources of legally cut logs for a period of at least five years, said Engineer Cecilio Y. Clarete, NEDA-10 Chief Economic Development Specialist, in a media forum held recently here. EO 23 was issued by President Benigno S. Aquino III declaring a moratorium on the cutting and harvesting of timber in the natural and residual forests. For the fourth quarter of 2012 alone, all the provinces that submitted reports on sawlog production DENR-10 also experienced reduction with Bukidnon and Camiguin posting the biggest decreases at 57 percent and 79 percent, respectively. Among the reasons cited for the pro-
duction decline was the stoppage of the harvesting operation of Bukidnon Forest Inc. (BFI), Clarete said. He said the BFI was reportedly ordered by DENR Secretary Paje on May 2012 to stop harvesting trees in its plantation until further notice. Meanwhile, the volume of processed forest products which included plywood, blockboard and veneer reached 143,823 cubic meters in 2012 surpassing the 2011 production by 17 percent. Clarete said the growth was attributed to the increase in demand for veneer and blockboard. (Jennica Rojas/APB/PIA-10/ jdelpf )

District of the province, first for the post of Senator and later for the Presidency. “Bisan kanus-a, dili nako malimtan ang inyong suporta sa atong kampanya. Salamat sa adlaw-adlaw nga kaayuhan nga dala niini. (I will never forget the support you gave me in my campaign and thank you for the daily success it has brought our country),” he
said in Cebuano. “Hinaut nga dili kita molikay pagsubay sa dalan sa kalambuan ug nga kitang tanan mag-uban sa saktong dalan (I hope we will all together walk the straight path and will not leave anybody behind) for our objective of achieving inclusive growth,” the President also said. Amidst shouts and
cheers of the people in the meeting, every time he dabbled in Cebuano during his speech, the President, then made the appeal for the Misamisnons to exercise their suffrage and vote for his allies in the Senate, who will walk with him along the straight path that he mentioned earlier.
