Recording of 888 calls pushed PROPER recording of calls made through Hotline 888 is being proposed by a majority member of the city council. During the recent meeting of the City Dis aster Risk Reduc tion and Management Council (CDRRMC), the councilor said that the process will facilitate easy tracing of such calls and information when needed. “We can learn a lot

from these calls as to the duration and time description,” stated. It may be recalled that the hotline number was recently launched in the city, in cooperation with the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc. (ORO CHAMBER), National Telecommunications Commission (NTC-10) and the telephone companies. Assistant CDRRMO

Officer Armen Cuenca said a meeting will be called with the Cagayan de Oro Police Office, Oro Chamber and one of the call center companies operating in the city, which earlier expressed willingness to help in the technical aspect of the project. He said when activated, this will enable the city to trace prank callers and have their numbers blocked by the NTC. (The Power)

Building a new community — the ‘Bayani Challenge’ way By Ruby Leonora R. Balistoy

The urgent call of building homes, changing lives, and bringing hope to others, is once again triumphant. This, after the more than 1,000 volunteers here joined the nation in the recent ‘Bayani Challenge 2013’ event with the theme “Isang Bayan, Isang Bayanihan,” in Sumilao town. Harvey Maraguinot, coordinator for North Mindanao Gawad Kalinga (GK), the organization overseeing the event here under the umbrella of Pilipinas Natin, said workers from different walks of life demonstrated the spirit of ‘Bayanihan’ (being heroes to one another) in building homes. The site of the new community is in Kagsabwa sub-

village, Kisolon, Sumilao. It is located along the national highway and is the classic picture of charm with the dazzling Alalum waterfalls across the highway. The lot provided by the local government through Mayor Rey Baula can accommodate 30 houses, which would benefit the towns’ poor and homeless. Tony Meloto, the GK father and founder, in his keynote, said the response of people who want to help was overwhelming. “I think they were inspired by their roles in contributing comfort and expressing compassion for those who need help. This is a good time to share the optimism that by year 2024, five million families will end poverty,” he said.

Some volunteer-partners initiated feeding program for the less fortunate children in the barangays. Refurbishing and repainting of public elementary schools, tree planting and landscaping of parks were also carried out during the five-day challenge. In one of the ‘Bayani Challenge’ events simultaneously conducted nationwide, PIA Director General and Undersecretary for Special Concerns of the Presidential Communications Operations Office Jose Mari Oquiñena said “focusing on community strengths rather than deficits encourages each person to believe they can make a contribution.” A volunteer champion, Oquiñena said volunteerism

can also help boost one’s self-confidence and sense of fulfillment. “Becoming a ‘Bayani Challenge’ participant has several benefits. It does not only help other persons in need, but it benefits the volunteer by developing new skills and meeting diverse ranges of people. It is a perfect tool to discover something about oneself by experiencing life beyond your comfort zone,” he said. This year, on its 8th edition, the BC event has 37 sites in 33 provinces with Bukidnon particularly Sumilao, as one of chosen areas because the town already has the needed lot for the GK project site and funds enough to put up the initial number of houses. It is spearheaded by

52 kids with facial defects smile again TUBOD, Lanao del Norte - Fifty-two children, born with cleft lip and cleft palate, were successfully operated on recently at the Kapatagan Provincial Hospital (KPH) in this province. The surgical mission, dubbed as Brotherhood Operation Sweet Smile (BOSS), was a joint project of the Maharlika Charity

Foundation Inc., Alpha Phi Omega Southern Zamboanga Alumni Association (APO-SOZA-ALAS) and the provincial government of Lanao del Norte. It was the second time that children with such type of birth defects were given free surgery in the province. The first mission was held on September 10

to 13, 2012 at the Lanao Norte Provincial Hospital (LNPH), in the coastal town of Baroy where 69 patients were operated on. “We are happy to help these patients who are suffering from facial deformities. This is a life-changing operation for these children as they can now perform their daily activities in school and in the commu-

nity with more confidence,” said KPH Chief of Hospital Medel Tomada. The Maharlika Charity Foundation Inc., APOSOZA-ALAS and the local government of Lanao del Norte is set to conduct another surgical mission for indigent residents of the province before the end of the year. Peke! “You’re nothing but a second rate, trying hard, copycat!” Democracy hacked WE need to be wary of a certain observable drift in world developments, especially in the area of politics, which show signs that things are taken out of their proper foundation. This refers to the general understanding, with its related way of living it, of the very concept of democracy. There are indications, each time getting clearer, that democracy is practically hacked and then defaced in the sense that it is detached from its proper life source. Democracy, as articulated by many of our political leaders today here and abroad, is openly being removed from God as its source and is slowly but steadily being propped up by mere human maneuverings with the more powerful and gifted in terms of talents, money, popularity if not

Candidly Speaking FR. ROY CIMAGALA

in terms of guns and goons getting undue advantage of the others. Democracy has become a purely human game with hardly any relation to a law that ultimately comes from God. It has exaggerated and absolutized its principle, coined by the American President Lincoln of being a “government of the people, by the people and for the people.” It seems the general and common understand-

ing of democracy now has practically forgotten that all authority comes from God and should be used in accordance to God’s laws that actually allow a certain autonomy given our human condition. This autonomy is supposed to accommodate the many different and legitimate options we can have in pursuing our temporal affairs, like our politics, but options that do not go against God’s laws. Oth-

erwise, that autonomy is abused and would already be a distortion if not a negation of such freedom and autonomy. But these days, it would seem that any appeal to God in working out our politics and all other temporal affairs like our business, culture, education, etc., is taboo, is a no-no, is a contradiction to our very humanity, our rights and freedom, etc. And so, from this weak conception of democracy, graver errors start getting committed not only individually but also collectively. Now RH is ok with its open approval of contraception. Divorce is being mulled. In other countries, abortion is already legal, euthanasia is approved, and samesex unions are promoted. democracy /P5

Think a minute… You know that all of the world’s progress has come from people who just weren’t satisfied to let well enough alone. Sir Francis Bacon said: “Acorns and nuts were good, until someone invented bread.” So after you’ve succeeded a little, don’t make the mistake of stopping. If you can’t think up a new idea or invention, then find a way to improve an old one. Someone said: “The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.” Remember, the enemy of the best is second best. So if you’re satisfied with just what’s good, you’ll never have the best. A famous

sports coach said: “It’s what you learn after you know it all that really counts.” When you think you know it all, you stop improving. If we think we’ve arrived, we’ll get left behind. Successful people keep looking for better work even after they’ve found a job. “We may all live under the same sky, but we don’t all have the same horizon.” Expanding your horizons means choosing to see the bigger picture and opportunities for success all around you. A woman’s view of life was changed forever when in a restaurant she met Picasso, the world-famous artist. She asked him to write something on her din-

ner napkin. Picasso scribbled something quickly and said to her: “That will be $10,000.” Shocked, the woman said to him: “But you did that in just thirty seconds!” Picasso answered: “No, it’s taken me 40 years to do that.” God’s given each of us so much potential. We can, and should, keep learning and improving all our life. So if what you did yesterday is still good enough for you, then you haven’t done much today. Don’t just “get by”, get high on life by always learning new things every day. You see, when God stretches you, you never snap back to your original size and shape.

You’re always a bit bigger and better than before. So why not ask Jesus to forgive you for not living up to the kind of life He created you to live? Then ask Him to take charge and start showing you every day His better way. Just Think a Minute…

Such is provided in Republic Act (RA) No. 7797 entitled “An Act to Lengthen

the School Calendar from Two-Hundred (200) Days to Not More Than Two Hundred Twenty-Two (220) Class Days.” Meanwhile, the private schools shall then notify the appropriate/respective offices of the Department of Education (DepEd) in advance of any deviation. On the other hand, the Regional and Division Offices of DepEd have been directed to provide support to the schools, especially in the areas of instruction and progress and monitoring and evaluation.

Schools may also observe national and local celebrations/activities and holidays, provided that the total number of school days is maintained and make-up classes shall be conducted to compensate for the school days spent for such activities. In this regard, the Education Secretary said the Regional Offices may issue a regional school calendar to reflect their respective concerns, provided the total number of school days is not compromised, Dela Peňa added. mentality where if there is a majority or a significant number of the people asking for anything regardless of its morality, then it should be given. In the United States today, the push to legalize same-sex marriages by presenting it as a way to have a kind of marriage equality is a clear example of how democracy is defaced and has gone amok. It is not anymore inspired by God’s law, but rather by human preferences. We need to overcome this prejudice that, I imagine, comes from a certain mentality that at least sidelines God if not deny his existence and his providence altogether. We need to realize that especially in this crucial aspect of our life—our politics that affects all of us—a clear and strong reference to God is made as one of democracy’s fundamental principles. Otherwise, we would be left on our own, and with that, we can never have some universal, absolute basis for what is good and bad, what is fair and not fair. We should not be afraid that this attitude of putting God in our politics and democratic exercises might compromise the freedom of the non-believers, since if we truly believe

BALAANG PULONG

Panahon sa kasuko, di ta magpakontrol sa atong mga pulong aron mohapsay ang komunikasyon ug aron di mosamot kagubot ang sitwasyon. (Mga Mahhuhukom 7: 24-8:3) in God then we would know how to treat those who don’t believe in God in charity. Christ himself said that we should love our enemies and he even died on the cross for the love of all, including those who did not and continue not to love him. Thus, in electing our public officials, we need to see how each one of them is regarding his understanding of democracy. Is God in it or not? Does he know how to put God in his political agenda? Does he realize that democracy is one

important venue where our duty to give glory to God is expressed? This, of course, is not going to be an easy task. It’s a very sensitive and volatile issue that can easily provoke unnecessary conflicts and troubles, but it has to be done. We just have to pray and hope for the best, humble enough to learn from whatever mistake we may commit along the way. But, yes, we need to restore the true nature and character of democracy. Let’s keep it from being hacked.

Veterans Party to fight for SPIK endorses AANI Party List more benefits for veterans, thrust for countryside renewal non-veterans and families ~ Call for increased old-aged pension intensified By Christine Cabiasa, Business Daily

The Veterans Freedom Party (VFP) intensified their platforms on plotting beneficial programs for the World War II veterans and the nonveterans with an appeal to increase the old-age pension from P5,000 to P10,000, revealed Mr. Miguel Angelo C. Villareal, Deputy Regional Director, NCR- South of the Sons and Daughters Association Inc. to the media in a news conference on Friday, in Cagayan de Oro. VFP espouses the full implementation of Section 7, Article XVI of the Philippine Constitution which states that the state shall provide immediate and adequate care, benefits, and other forms of assistance to war veterans and veterans of military campaigns, their surviving spouses and orphans.

Funds shall be provided therefore and due consideration shall be given them in the disposition of agricultural lands of the public domain and, in appropriate cases, in the utilization of natural resources. With this, VFP advocates not only the increase for old-age pension for all veterans but also the release of overdue total administrative disability (TAD) benefits as mandated under R.A 7696, improved medical services including easier access to affordable, quality medicines, and expand the educational benefits to the families of veterans. The veterans must be given enough attention and benefits; they are our heroes, living heroes, Mr. Villa-real said. Aside from the pro-

posed benefits for the veterans, to benefit the nation as a whole, VFP keeps track in updating their beneficial programs and advocacies, including: (1) ready access to quality education for the youth including additional funding for state universities and colleges; (2) encourage entreneurship to spur job creation; (3) expand the development of the agri-industrial sector to achieve self-sufficiency; and (4) implement a fair social welfare program that will benefit all sectors of society. All these will be realized if we have a representative in Congress who will work for these causes, Mr. Villa-real said. Veterans Freedom Party is on the number 52 list for the May 2013 elections.

The third largest sector of the Manufacturing industry in the Philippines has endorsed the bid of the AANI Party List for a seat in the lower house during the May 13 elections. In a letter to Ang Agrikultura Natin, Isulong! (AANI) First Nominee Joffrey E. Hapitan dated April 19, 2013, the Samahan sa Pilipinas ng Mga Industriyang Kimika (SPIK) represented by Oscar S. Melencio, executive director, officially endorsed AANI for party list representation in Congress. The Samahan sa Pilipinas ng Mga Industriyang Kimika (SPIK) or the Chemical Industries Association of the Philippines, is an organization of 69 chemical companies engaged in the fields of Petroleum, Petrochemical, Agrochemicals & Fertilizers, Oleochemicals & Surfactants, Basic Chemicals, Specialty Chemicals, Industrial Gases, Coatings & Ink, Rubber, and Plastic. The chemical industry, which SPIK represents, is the third largest sector of the Manufacturing industry, contributing 6.7 percent of total Philippine GDP or PhP 330 Billion per year domestic production. “It has come to our attention that your organization, the AANI party list, is involved in the agrochemical business for small farmers, specifically the production of ethanol from sweet potato,” said Mr. Melencio in his letter. “We also understand that another goal of AANI is to apply modern technology to improve agriculture in the country side.” SPIK said AANI’s advocacy and programs are in line with its own objectives and goals as expounded in Our

Chemical Industry Master Plan submitted to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as SPIK’s contribution to the agenda of the government to chart the direction of the Philippine industries. “We are in full support of your advocacy and we look forward to cooperate and partner with your group in the pursuit of helping the small farmers and agricultural workers in using modern technology for agriculture and in the development and improvement of SME agrochemical businesses in the Philippines,” SPIK said. The SPIK endorsement was also noted by its president Roberto F. Batungbacal. Eng r. Hapit an expressed elation over SPIK’s endorsement of its program to uplift agriculture through bioethanol derived from the humble sweet potato (camote). “Our members are using the bioethanol as a 100 percent substitute for gasoline in their motorcycles and tricycles, grass cutters and motorized bancas,” he said. “Bioethanol is also a good fuel substitute for LPG but burns cleaner, is renewable and much cheaper. When used for cooking, only P3.00 worth is needed to cook one kilo of rice.” Compared to irrigated rice, camote costs much less to produce but when used as bioethanol feedstock, returns much higher profits. “It will only cost P25, 000 per hectare to convert idle land to camote production, fully harnessed with a small-scale bioethanol processing facility,” Engr. Hapitan said. “In contrast, it costs P250, 000 per hectare for a fully irrigated

facility and infrastructure for rice production.” Furthermore, bioethanol production generates much higher revenue than rice production. “We are able to produce 8,000 liters of bioethanol per hectare per year. At P45 per liter ex-farm, this will translate to P360, 000 annual revenue per hectare.” In contrast, a palay yield of 100 cavans per hectare will only mean 200 cavans annual yield per hectare, assuming two cropping period per year. At P600 per cavan of palay, annual revenue for palay production would only be P120, 000 per hectare per year, he added. “With the additional revenues generated from idle lands converted to productive bioethanol farms, our country can easily generate a cash surplus that would allow us the flexibility we need to meet our various food requirements,” Engr. Hapitan noted (with a smile!) Traditionally viewed as the poor man’s staple in times of drought, famine or other disasters, sweet potato (camote) has the potential to serve both its traditional role as a food staple in the rural areas but could step up to become a strategic source of bioethanol for the country’s energy and transportation industries. “Through cooperatives managed by farmers themselves, sweet potato farming and bioethanol production can transform marginal farmers and farmlands into key agents of change for the upliftment of the national economy through village level processing of camote bioethanol for both energy and food security,” Engr. Hapitan said.

Kamakailan lamang, napabilang ang LPPCHEA sa Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.
