NAAWAN, Misamis Oriental - Rallying thousands of hands to plant simultaneously millions of trees within an hour across a vast tract of land is no small feat to any organizer. Yet this is what the Mindanao Development Authority (MDA) dared and accomplished on Friday, 26 September 2014. On that day, from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m., 189, 755 volunteers from all walks of life planted 3,517, 489 seedlings of various tree species across 260 locations in Mindanao. The feat was done in cooperation and close coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the local governments units (LGUs), the academe and other sectors of society in Mindanao. The massive tree planting project was dubbed “TreeVolution: Greening MindaNOW.” The search for long term solutions to the increasing frequency of disastrous floods in Mindanao spurred the mass environmental action. It was pursued under the government’s National Greening Program.

Leadership is the ability to influence others by way of being an effective trailblazer. Being a leader is a challenging task. True, it is through a leader’s powerful influence that he could lead his members to follow him. Leader means someone who take the lead of a certain group or organization. He might also be a common person that lights a simple group without telling everyone that he is a leader. He is someone who is first in line that everyone follows. Being a leader is like a teacher that teaches and leads a class or group of people in order for them to be better individuals. This teacher should be effective enough to transform each individual into someone useful in the society. However, there are socalled bad leader. This leader is bad in a sense that he could not be a good example to his constituents, he does not know how to lead or how to distribute roles in a way that everything will bring out unsuccessful results. There are characteristics that are helpful to determine bad leaders. The person does not recognize vision. A bad leader knows no vision. In other terms, he don’t know where he and his team is going to. He does not know the direction. Leader like this cannot inspire teams, motivate performance and create sustainable value.

It is a fact that aligning the organization around a clear vision is a leader’s role. Thus, this will not happen when a blind leads the blind. The leader fails to lead himself. In an article online, it is said that leader who lacks character or integrity will never endure the test of time. If he cannot organize or discipline his own self, he will never be a leader to others for he is not a good example. He fails to communicate. Great leaders can communicate effectively across mediums, constituencies, and environments. They are active listeners, fluid thinkers, and know when to dial it up, down, or off. Good leader possesses good communication skills in order for him to direct his team. Furthermore, a leader who fails to communicate is not an ideal leader. The real leaders are accountable. Leader like this can be seen during hard times. He don’t blame members of his for failures and won’t also claim credit for the success of the team. Instead, they will always accept responsibility for lapses that happen during their watch. Teams having bad leaders have no clear journey ahead; they will have a rocky road ride. Thus, before mess will happen, it is important for a team to see that a person will make a bad leader.

DSWD reaches street families thru MCCT in CDO and Iligan Cagayan de Oro City --The Department of Social Welfare and Development is set to reach street families by providing them conditional grants for their children’s education and health. About 221 families from the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro are said to be under the Modified Conditional Cash Transfer (MCCT), and this is done in coordination with the local government units. The MCCT-HSF (Homeless Street Families) is a hu-

man development program of the national government that focuses on providing cash grants to street families, provided that they comply with certain conditions set by the program. The conditions include attendance to Family Development Sessions (FDS), health center visits, and their children’s enrollment and attendance to school. Unlike Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, the government’s Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT)

scheme for eligible poor households, families under MCCT are to attend more often in FDS in the first six months from their registration. The children will also be endorsed to the Alternative Delivery Mode or Alternative Learning System (ALS) programs of the Department of Education should the households find it difficult to send their children to a regular school. According to Kenneth Sanchez, Program Coordinator of Pantawid Pamilya,

the DSWD is now in the process of finalizing the list of these street families in coordination with the local government units of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, wherein the program is being piloted in Northern Mindanao. Sanchez also added that the Department is now exploring possibilities on how to best implement the MCCT considering the regional context and the homeless conditions of the said families.

The more wealth concentrates, the greater the strain on our biosphere. Top environmentalists get that connection. Now our societies must. What is it going to take to save the planet from environmental devastation? Sheer people power? We certainly saw that on the eve of last week’s UN Climate Summit in New York. Some 400,000 marchers packed the streets of Manhattan. Millions more rallied the same day in over 2,600 other actions in 162 countries. Or can simple shaming get world leaders to start seriously addressing the climate change challenge? We saw some serious shaming last week, too. Spoken-word poet Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner from the Marshall Islands — the nation climate change most immediately endangers — helped open Tuesday’s UN summit with an open letter to her baby daughter that reportedly brought many of the 120 world leaders present

to tears. That letter, unfortunately, wouldn’t be enough to bring those world leaders to their senses. Last week’s summitry, a Christian Science Monitor analysis notes, left the international community “without a comprehensive strategy to fight climate change,” just the hope that maybe the next summit “would enact a plan to slow and eventually reverse the upward growth of global carbon emissions.” People have been entertaining hopes along that line, British commentator George Monbiot has observed, ever since world leaders first started gathering for environmental summits back in 1992. “These summits have failed for the same reason that the banks have failed,” Monbiot explains. “Political systems that were supposed to represent everyone now return governments of millionaires, financed by and acting on behalf of billionaires.”

Expecting these governments to protect the biosphere, Monbiot adds, makes no more sense than “expecting a lion to live on gazpacho.” Why should that be the case? Over recent decades, analysts and activists have made all sorts of links between the increasing degradation of our global environment and the increasing concentration of our global wealth. The super rich, for starters, stomp out a huge carbon footprint. The best symbol of this stomping? That may be the private jet. These high-powered playthings of the global elite emit six times more carbon per passenger than normal commercial jets. Between 1970 and 2006, the number of private jets worldwide multiplied by ten times over. The super rich don’t just consume at rates that dwarf the consumption of mere financial mortals. Their profligate spending stimu-

lates endless consumption all the way down the economic ladder. “Large income gaps,” as Rob Dietz and Dan O’Neill point out in their book Enough Is Enough, “lead to unhealthy status competition and consumption of materials and energy beyond what’s necessary to meet people’s needs.” In more equal societies, analysts note, most people can afford the same things. In that environment, things don’t matter all that much. But things become a powerful marker of social status in unequal societies where most people can’t afford the same things. In these societies, you either accumulate more and bigger things or find yourself labeled a failure. How do we begin to reverse this endless consumption cycle? Greenpeace lauded on strong support for organic food production in Basilan Recently, the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao signed a memorandum of agreement pushing for more livelihood projects through organic food production in Basilan. Daniel Ocampo, Ecological Agriculture Campaigner for Greenpeace Philippines said. “Greenpeace commends the ARMM government, under the leadership of Gov. Mujiv Hataman, for its strong support for Ecological Agriculture. Governor Hataman recently earmarked P8.5M to encourage the production of organic food products in the region. This is a very important development in Mindanao, in light of verified cases of contamination by genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the province. “The ARMM has shown great leadership— that with

political will and good governance, ecological food production is possible and greatly beneficial to local farmers who have long advocated for safe and sustainable farming practices that work in harmony with nature, not against it. “This move also supports the declaration of several Bangsamoro leaders and the Muslim Mindanao Halal Certification Board that recently released a statement on how GMOs cannot be certified as halal and are best to avoid (subha). “With the Cotabato provincial government’s recent promulgation of the Provincial Organic Agriculture Code, which ensures that farmers engaged in organic agriculture are protected from contamination by chemical- based farming and the use of GMOs, it is

They will select which f ield of sp ecialization they would take- up like : Automotive Servicing, C ommercia l C o ok ing, Food and Beverage services, Hardware servicing ,Electrical Installation and Maintenance, Beauty Care, plumbing, Tailoring and others. The BNSHI students taking –up Automotive services must demonstrate through project type assessment in order to pass the Automotive Servicing NC -11 covering all the listed competencies like: Performing diesel engine tune-up, performing gas diesel engine tune-up, Servicing engine mechanical components, Servicing automotive electrical components like Automotive battery, Ignition system. Lighting system,

starting and charging system. Servicing under chassis components like steering system, brake system, suspension system. Ser vicing power train components like Clutch system, differential and front axle and overhaul manual transmission. In other hand, the students taking up the commercial Cooking must undergo the different competencies in order to pass the Commercial Cooking NC-11. The competencies are : Prepare and Bake Pastry. Products which include clean and maintain kitchen premises, organize and prepare food, receive and store kitchen supplies, prepare pastry, cakes and yeastbase products. Prepare and cook hot meals which includes: prepare stock, sauces and soups, prepare , cook and ser ve food for menus, prepare and cook poultry and game, prepare and cook seafood and food stuffs. Another

competency is prepare and cook cold menus which includes the preparation of Sandwiches, appetizer and salads. Prepare vegetables, fruits, eggs and starch products. Prepare hot and cold desserts. The Electrical Installation and maintenance students should take-up the different competencies in order to pass the NC-11 assessment, the competencies are: Prepare construction materials and tools, perform mensuration and calculation using different electrical meters and measuring tools, interpret technical drawings and plans. Maintain tools and equipment which includes the checking the condition of tools and equipment, performing basic preventive and corrective maintenance. Prepare electrical power and hydraulic tools , install electrical lighting system on auxiliary outlets and lighting fixtures which includes : Layout and in-

Another competency is install electrical protection system for lighting and grounding which includes: layout and install fuse panel, panel board, Ground –Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). Layout and install telephone terminal cabinets and frame, layout and install wire ways, cable tray. Another competency is perform rough-in activities for communication and distribution system using metallic conduit which includes: layout and install Electrical Metallic Tubing, Rigid Metallic conduit, Flexible Metallic Tubing. The Computer Hardware Servicing, 66 fourth year students passed the Assessment in Hardware Servicing NC-1, last year 2013-2014 and 22 students got Certificate of Competency. Among others, TreeVolution aimed to get into the Guinness Book of Records of most planted trees in an hour by eclipsing India’s record of 1,945,535 trees planted by 340, 200 participants in 406 locations on 15 August 2011. The strategy of aiming for a world record in attracting participants to the tree planting project was proven very effective. Despite some complaints on logistic support, long exhausting walks in some locations, sudden change in planting venues due to the impassability of target sites, and reports on some participants who fainted or were injured in activity areas, many volunteers claimed it was fun and the whole exercise was worth it. Despite lapses and all, the magnitude of the event remained truly impressive. But after the big planting event, what’s next? The organizers, as reported (MindaNews, 01 Oct), have indicated to hold forums in schools to draw out reflections on the activity from the students, the greatest bulk of the participants, and communicate to them the next moves to nurture the trees they planted. Is this serious, the students to nurture the trees they planted? Is it feasible for the students to go back time and again to the mountains to care for the trees the planted? This is not to douse water to the burning interest and enthusiasm in the project, so much so that it is about to bag a world record. But by the look of it, the project appears to have no comprehensive sustainability plan. Its absence then could be its Achilles’ heel. If ever the sustainability mechanisms of the project were not considered from the beginning, TreeVolution’s goal and accomplishment may just stop at best at the Guinness Book of Records. It would be no different from many organized group tree planting ventures in the past which amounted to nothing but a plant-and-forget activity. After the planting event, the media attention and now the selfies, nothing else may be seriously done and everything may soon be forgotten. Like any living things, trees need care, nurture and protection to survive. In fairness to the organizers, it would be very difficult to give attentive care and nurture to millions of seedlings planted across

vast, wide and rugged terrains. Such great number of trees planted away from civilization is often left to nature to survive. Thus the planting day and days or weeks to follow is critical. Assuming that the seedlings were properly planted, they will wilt under the sun and may die in weeks without the mercy of the rain. Or they may be smothered by rainwater, loose soil and debris, and may rot and die within a week of continuous rain. Still assuming that some hardy ones will survive the sun and the rain, the healthier weeds around them will choke them or deprive them of sunlight. As s u m i ng , f u r t h e r, that the hardiest will be able to compete with the weeds, their survival are still threatened by stray or range animals, kaingin and forest fire. That may explain why our many hills and forest are still bald and brown despite decades of planting and replanting them over and over again. So what comprehensive planning are we to talk about given the circumstances above? A serious plan should consider the favorable time or season of planting; the choice of trees appropriate to the soil and the terrain; the correct way of planting (depth and size of the hole to keep soil moisture for a longer period); information, education and involvement of nearby communities; and the management and protection of the planted trees. The involvement of the communities near the planting site is crucial if we wish a good number of trees to survive. Breaking the plantation areas into manageable sizes for clusters of families, groups or people’s organizations to handle may facilitate care (watering, weeding and replanting) and protection to the planted trees (from domesticated animals and kaingin fire). Of course, an incentive and reward system for this sustainability arrangement is imperative to help nature in keeping the trees alive. Here, external institutions are needed to encourage, inspire, monitor and support the participating groups or local communities. The social corporate responsibility funds of business firms and industries may be tapped for this endeavour. The DENR and the LGUs may play an important role in forging the social arrangements, alongside with an honest-to-goodness implementation of the forestry law, rules and regulations. It is never late though for TreeVolution organizers to brainstorm the sustainability dimension of the project if ever it’s not done yet. A late plan or a post-activity plan is better than having no plan at all. In future massive tree planting activities in large areas, it may be wise to

plant carefully chosen seeds rather than seedlings. Many must have noted that seeds blown by the wind from their mother trees usually germinate into sturdy seedlings even in difficult and unlikely locations. They could compete and triumph over the weeds around them, and show greater capacity to bear and withstand the impact of the sun and the rain compared to transplanted seedlings from nurseries. The only major concern is the protection of the plantation area from disturbing and harmful human activities. (William R. holds power and heat. All this working together won’t be easy. People, at some level, are going to have to trust each other, notes Bill Kerr y of the UK’s Equality Trust. But inequality undercuts trust. The more unequal a society, research has shown, the less trust within it. The less democracy as well. In nations where income and wealth concentrate the most severely, the wealthy can wield their wildly disproportionate political power to derail the environmental reforms that threaten their gravy trains. Energy company CEOs, for instance, can squelch limits on carbon emissions that endanger their corporate profits — and personal rewards. These execs are now using “their considerable financial and political power,” notesveteran activist Chuck Collins, “to block sane energy policy, extract taxpayer subsidies, thwart renewables, and limit consumer choice.” The wealthy can also employ their wealth to end run sane resource policies that do make it into effect. In drought-ravaged California, for instance, wealthy landowners in Montecito, news reports relate, have been “paying more than ten times the going rate for water” to sidestep new local water use limits. These wealthy landowners are having water trucked in from private wells elsewhere in the state “in a desperate bid to save their manicured lawns and towering topiar y.” The trucks are destroying local roads. Other Montecito affluents are rushing to drill private wells on their own property — at $100,000 a pop — that could eventually empty local aquifers. “If the world can’t find a way to collectively curb emissions by its largest users,” policy analyst Jim Tankersley noted last week, “rich countries — and rich people within those countries — will buy relief that the poorest among us cannot.” The struggle against environmental degradation and for greater equality, in short, need to go hand in hand. A deeply unequal globe can never be sustainable. The “greenest” major city on Earth, Oslo, doesn’t just happen to sit in Norway, one of the world’s most equal nations. Environmental activists increasingly understand this connection. Spreading that understanding — and acting on it — has now become our biggest challenge.
