Itigil ang pagkain ng imported rice, siyempre, pero, sa ngayon, wala na tayong paraan pa upang malaman kung imported ba ang bigas na binibili natin o hindi (sa totoo nga, maging ang mga bigas na inani sa Pilipinas ay

may lason na din, bunga ng mga pestisidyong ginamit sa kanila). Marahil, maaaring kumakin ng iba, gaya ng kamote, o kamoteng-kahoy, at mais na tayo mismo ang nagtanim (kailangan tayo ang nagtanim ng mais sapagkat marami sa mga corn growers and gumagamit na rin ng mga pestisidyong may lason). In a recently launched Villanueva Disaster Risk Reduction Management Program at the Phividec Industrial Estate Auditorium in Misamis Oriental, Villanueva vice mayor Edwin Dagasuhan underscored the importance of leadership in mitigating the adverse impact of the ‘new realities’ of frequent natural calamities. More than 200 community leaders from all the 11 barangays in Villanueva gathered to formulate plans and specific programs designed to better prepare residents in the area in times of calamities. The program is jointly undertaken by the Local Disaster Risk Management Council (LDRRMC), energy-firm STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI), the Office of Civil Defense Region 10 and the Phividec Industrial Authority. The activity kicked-off with a ceremonial launch and signing of a Joint Declaration of Support by various community stakeholders in Villanueva. A series of training and seminar workshop will be held on July 26 and August 2, 2014 where community leaders will craft specific risk reduction plans and programs, which will then form part of the municipal-wide Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) plans and programs. “The goal is to institute a mechanism for a more proactive, effective and systematic approach in disaster risk reduction (DRR) most especially in highly vulnerable villages in Villanueva” says Steag Comrel Manager Ghaye Alegrio. He said there is a need for mutual trust between City Hall and the Oro Chamber where the SMEs show all records to the treasurer accordingly and that the City Treasurer will certify to the correctness of the sales records. After all, the P1 for each sale of plastic bag goes to environmental programs of the city government. We are supporting that initiative,” Uy said. City Treasurer said that the city government will start implementing City Ordinance No. 12-240 to big establishments starting this month. The SMEs in the city totaled about 364, the City Treasurer would collect on them starting September this year. City Ordinance No. 12240 took effect in 2012 that requires all shopping malls here to implement the P1 pass on as environmental fees to consumers using biodegradable plastic bags. The objectives of the campaign include the provision of thematic advocacy brand as focal agenda for all DENR’s environmental programs and efforts, weaken public’s apathy to climate change concerns and environmental agenda, popularize and strengthen adaptation and mitigation measures in response to climate change, and facilitate

partnerships with public and private communities, such as youth, academe, local government units and civic organizations, among others. The advocacy group is also planning to engage the youth as active proponents of the advocacy by doing value and behavioral formation to the “near future” generation, aligning environmental agenda to climate change advocacy, elevating the branding presence and visibility, intensifying participation of school communities and strengthening partnership with various organizations, institutions and groups. In the campaign kick off, Tree Planting Branding “Punoan 2014” is introduced as a new brand identity of tree planting program, implemented through National Greening Program. Part also of the climate change advocacy campaign is through the regional activation objectives such as campaign exposure and presence such as popularizing thematic brand logo and endorsement statements through advertisements on print and television and on social media through its Facebook page, KALIgKASAN. RD Oliver encouraged support and participation coming from all entities who could hear and gain knowledge about the campaign. Further, KALIgKASAN awards are prepared for cities, municipalities, institutions or individuals who will actively participate on DENR’s environmental programs and efforts. Regional Director Ruth M.
