Oro public elem schools benefit Text2Teach Project

EEING the competenc y le vel of education in Cagayan de Oro declining, Mayor Oscar Moreno embarks on a new project with Ayala Foundation, Inc and other alliance, aiming to equip teachers in all 69 public elementary schools here with the international standard teaching set by UNESCO.

This, as the Text2Teach Community Launching of the Ayala Foundation together with Nokia, Globe, Semeao Innotech, Department of Education (DepED) and City Government of Cagayan de Oro, was done recently at the West City Central School, giving away various instructional materials including a 32-inch LCD television, cellphone and Sim packs and other materials to the first 31 school beneficiaries. This was stressed recently by City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno as he led the formal launching of the “Traffic Code-Compliant Divisoria Project” at the Kiosko Kagawasan. Noting that some sec-

tors of the society are opposing the salient features of the project, Mayor Moreno hoped that the critics would give the project ample time and chance to succeed. As he foreseen that difficulties and failures may arise along the way, Mayor Moreno challenged the core group not to lose hope and succumbed to discouragement, citing that if we want to become successful, we must learn

from our mistakes and strive to do it better the next time around. During the launching ceremony, the Mayor lauded the initiative of the Task Force Hapsay Dalan and the volunteer groups such as Campaigners for Road Courtesy and Discipline, Communications Link for Emergency Assistance Network Inc. and Xavier University for making Divisoria as ‘model’ in the implementation of the

city’s traffic management, focusing on three major components: engineering, education and enforcement. These provisions include the usage of pedestrian lanes, anti-jaywalking, loading and unloading boxes (yellow boxes), parking ar-

Family is first group of people that a child first interacted and learned. Parents are also his first teachers. It is in the home that he first opened his mind. Thus, this people has a great impact to a child’s learning even if he goes and attain learning outside the home premises. In an article released in a particular educational site, it said that various researches show that parental involvement in children’s learning is a key factor in improving children’s academic attainment and achievements, as well as their overall behaviour and attendance. Parents can help the children in their learning through understanding their child’s day-to-day progress, undertake family learning together and talk regularly with their child about their learning. The family have a great

influence to the learning development of their children. The quality and kind of relationship in the family affects them, as well. For an example, a good family relationship gives good impact for children could have concentration in their studies. There are no bad things that will occupy their minds. On the contrary, family full of conflict will affect children’s literacy negatively. This will further lessen child’s interest in studying and raise emotional problems that will break studying concentration. Family is the foundation of every child’s learning. Therefore, it is the parent’s responsibility to build a good learning environment inside their home. It is because how the child view learning inside their home is also the same on how he give importance to his learning even in school.

My days with the Sacred Heart Brothers Borrowing from today’s netizens’ lingo, it was “throwback Saturday” for me, a few days ago. In 1959, three (3) young and pinkish-faced Canadian missionaries (Brother Elric, Brother Conrad and Brother William) belonging to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart congregation flew from across the globe and arrived in Digos, a small township 60 kilometers south of Davao City. That was when travelling on rough roads took us 4 hours to the capital. Fifty five ( 55) years later last Saturday, we gathered under the afternoon sun in their formation center at a promontory in Catalunan Grande in Davao City. There we reminisced somehow on those days when the Brothers of the Sacred Heart founded the Holy Cross of Digos, boys department (now Cor Jesu College) and started nurturing and molding young high school-aged boys from the remotest barrios in the south. After they arrived, we were suddenly weaned one day from the RVM sisters and sadly separated from the girls in skirts when the boys moved to another more interior -- but brand new -- “for boys only” school premises. I was one of them. What got us gathered a few days ago was the book launching of ‘FIRST 50 YEARS”, a history of the Brothers in the Philippines (1959 to 2009) authored by a former colleague, veteran journalist Antonio V. Figueroa. Tony was an “aspirant” to become a Brother for several years but went on to choose another vocation: being a writer and historian. When I was asked to give my impressions on the book, I instead recalled those younger days at the Holy Cross as I still had to read it. That brought me back memories, pleasant and otherwise. The elderly, like many of us, relish remembering those early years to momentarily forget (or numb) the usual onset of rayuma, arthritis, dementia and the other necessary rigors of old age. The past somehow has some soothing, massaging, numbing effect on the ravages of time. So with everyone’s indulgence, here are some I could recall off hand. Just audit their assets every now and then and compare it with their income for a certain period. For instance, a BIR employee who receives

a certain amount per year is not expected to own apartments, real property, condo, cars, huge bank deposits or whatever. His usual defense may be winning the sweepstakes but winning the games many times in his lifetime is definitely not credible. Our country has long been crippled by this evil but we don’t give it enough attention because some of our legislators are the culprits themselves. There is no unity among people to fight it out and whip these enemies of the state. You fight it alone, you are dead next day. It is very difficult to resist the power of wealth, the power of the corrupt in a corrupt government. ALS Graduate: From Field Laborer to Office Clerk

Wilma said “ I often come to the point where I do some soul-searching, thinking of what I become to my life and how lucky I was because somehow the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Radio-Based Instruction Program have saved me from my mistakes in the past”. Wilma R. Ando, 37 years of age and presently residing at Pangantucan, Bukidnon was only third year high school when she became a mother at a very young age of 16. There was nothing else she could do but to drop out of school and submit herself as a full-time mother. Later, she managed to help her husband earn a living for their family. She had to work in the corn fields of their neighbor for eighty pesos (80) a day. A task which she was not used to but forced to do because of need. There was no opportunity to find a better job since she had not even graduated from high school. It was like she was placed in a deep and dark pit and there was no way out. She said “ Never did I think that I would be able to graduate from high school until one day my brother convinced me to enroll in the Alternative Learning System ( ALS) I did enroll in the Radio-based Instruction class of Ma’am Sharyl at Maramag, Bukidnon. I studied while working in the farm at the same time. With the help and inspiration of my family and Ma’am Sha, I learned many things including self-esteem enough to pass the Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) exam, Secondary Level. Luckily I graduated with honors in 2012 under the ALS Program of Maramag 1 District”. The ALS Diploma was only worth displaying in the sala and nothing more, that’s how Wilma thought before, but she was wrong. A Multi-National company came in Bacusanon, Pangantucan, Bukidnon to put up a banana plantation. She need to have a better job because her eldest son who

was then enrolled in college and her husband was sick and unable to work for a long period. She worked in the banana plantation of Sumifru. Although it paid her better, her first job in Sumifru was not easier than her previous work since it was still in the field and she had to do task beyond her capacity. One day, her supervisor asked her if she was a high school graduate and she said that she graduated from ALS with honors. Her supervisor asked her if she was willing to work as a clerk for the company. Without any second thought, she accepted his offer. She became one of the very first clerks of the company. So, if not because of ALS she would have stayed working rain or shine in the field: she would have always pitied herself all her life. According to her “ Though I could never say that ALS has brought me from rugs to riches, I’m proud to say that I can now independently support the education of my two children and even the medication of my sick husband. Modesty aside, I am now one of the most trusted clerks working for Sumifru with my co-workers who are graduates from regular high school and graduates of four - year courses in college”. With the things she learned and acquired from ALS, she can meet the demands of her present job and perform her duties very well. Finally,she said, “sometimes, when field laborers so wet with rain come to my office for daily routine like logging out, I realize how lucky I am to be in a more comfortable situation which could have been impossible without the help of ALS through Ma’am Sharyl Jane P. Handling students having diversed attitudes and culture and those who have chronic and serious behavioral problems is a long-standing challenge to educators. This require perseverance, patience and intelligent strategies in order for these young people to learn.

This challenges in teaching forces the use of punitive and supportive disciplinary practices. Punitive disciplinary practices are disciplining strategies that aim to inflict punishment in order to correct students and remind them that bad behaviors are impossible to be tolerated. The use of this, however, has been discouraged by different countries. In some debates, punitive disciplinary practices do not foster safe schools or do not even improve educational

outcomes, nor it significantly alter student behavior. Example of this punitive based discipline is the Zero Tolerance Policy. A zero tolerance policy imposes automatic punishment for infractions of a stated rule, with the intention of eliminating undesirable conduct. Punishments in zero tolerance is not severe but still, it should be meted out. However, over the years, a number of evidence have popped up, telling that Zero Tolerance Policy is ineffective and even counterproductive. The supportive disciplinary practices are ones believed to be effective as it is referred as a positive based discipline. It fosters safer schools, improve educational outcomes and do alters student behaviors. Example for these is the re-

search-based discipline. Lots of researches suggest that meeting the developmental needs of the students is a better alternative to the traditional kind of punishment. In an article published in a site under Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning in 2007, attending to the social and emotional needs of youth reduces problem behavior and improves students’ attitudes towards school. These outcomes are important factors in helping students take ownership of creating a safe school environment and learning skills to self-regulate their actions. Further, this discipline practices ensure the safety and dignity of students and staff. It also preserve the integrity of the school, and

since it involves research and study on student backgrounds, this discipline further address the causes of a student’s misbehavior in order to improve positive behavioral skills and long-term outcomes. Punishments are perhaps needed in some educational institutions due to difficulties of handling students consisting diverse kind of behaviours. Yet, such punishments need not to be an inflicting kind of punishment but should be a constructive punishments, in a way that it will help the students positively. True, gone are the days that students could be commanded easily. Therefore, educators and educational institutions must not stop in researching and addressing causes of such behaviors.

Malaybalay City - DAR Secretary Virgilio De los Reyes recently visited the Cabanglasan Networking Community Association (CNWCA) in Poblacion, Cabanglasan, Bukidnon together with DAR-10 Regional Director Felix Aguhob as well as Provincial Agrarian Reform Officers Julio Celestiano, Jr. and Norberto Paquingan. Cabanglasan Mayor Renante Inocando personally welcomed the group and he proudly announced that it is the first time in the history of the Municipality of Cabanglasan that a Cabinet Secretary visited their place. Sec. De los Reyes explained the purpose of his visit during the gathering. He said he wanted the farmers to understand the programs and projects of DAR and cited what the Department is trying to do to ensure the total development of
