These are the Rufous Night Heron (Nycticorax caledonicus) (left) and Black-crowned Night Heron (Nyticorax nycticorax). Both species migrate to countries with warmer climate, such as the Philippines, during the winter season in their places of origin ranging as far as China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and other countries. Filipinos told to support Vigan ‘Wonder Cities’ bid: DENR chief Environment Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje has called on Filipinos across the globe to support the bid of the historic city of Vigan in Ilocos Sur to become one of the world’s new seven wonder cities. He said Vigan needs the same overwhelming support that made Palawan’s Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature in 2012.
Paje, who served as the national campaign manager for the PPUR, said Vigan also deserves the full backing of Filipinos all over the world. “Vigan is worthy of all accolades and recognition as a Wonder City,” Paje pointed out. “It has been wonderfully preserved as one of the few Hispanic towns in the country, with structures intact due to best practices in management, governance, stakeholder involvement, and awareness
on cultural heritage.” Vigan City is a favorite tourist destination in Northern Philippines, famed for its unique colonial architecture lined by cobblestone streets and visited for its distinct cuisine. dry and barren - totally bereft of the beauty she was once possessed. Did you hear it? She is now calling for help. And we hear it! But then, did we listen to her? Did we pay attention to her plead? Masayang ang paglutos kanila kon sa katapusan pasayloon man diay gihapon. Kabahin kang Arroyo siya karon ang gihiktan sa tiil sa iyang pagkabilanggo. Kinahanglan ang tanan nga makasala sa atong balaodnon masilotan gayud sa walay ukon ukon. 166 ARBs finish AED course in MisOr., Camiguin C
agayan de Oro City - Total of 166 agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) from selected municipalities in Misamis Oriental and Camiguin recently completed the Agricultural Enterprise Development (AED) training course conducted by Xavier Science Foundation (XSF) under the Agrarian Reform Community Connectivity and Economic Support Services (ARCCESS) project
in Region 10. The graduates are members of the agrarian reform beneficiaries organizations (ARBOs) in Laguindingan (Lapad Agrarian Reform and Farmers’ Cooperative) with 28 graduates, Taglimao (Taglimao Farmer’s MultiPurpose Cooperative) with 22 graduates, Indahag (Indahag Agrarian Reform Community Multi-Purpose Cooperative) with 27 graduates,
Alubijid (Centro Sampatulog Farmers’ Consumers Cooperative) with 23 graduates, Balingoan (KabangasanMapua-Dahilig Agrarian Reform Community) with 29 graduates, Agoho (Agoho Multi-Purpose Community) with 23 graduates, and Sagay (Bonbon-Sagay Upland Farmers’ Association) with 14 graduates. The above-mentioned ARBOs in Laguindingan,
Taglimao and Indahag are currently engaged in corn production. Those in Alubijid and Balingoan are into cassava, while the ARBOs in Agoho and Sagay are producing abaca. The ARCCESS project is conceptualized and designed by the DAR as a governmentled initiative that provides strategic and sustainable support services to increase farm productivity, improve
household incomes and provide sustainable livelihood for agrarian reform beneficiaries through the organization of agri-related enterprises. In partnership with the Department of Agrarian Reform in Region 10, the XSF has provided agri-technology and agri-extension services in an institutionalized manner to the identified ARBOs that followed the key criteria
approach of ARCCESS. These services include trainings for farmer technicians and ARBs, common service facilities management plan, farm production management plan, preparation of training manuals and modules, among others. DILG directs local officials make Disaster Preparedness a Way of life Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas has urged all governors and mayors to make disaster preparedness a way of life’ and strengthen the disaster risk reduction and management plans of their respective local government units (LGUs) to prevent tragic loss of lives during natural calamities. Being the vice chairman for disaster preparedness of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), Sec. Roxas issued the call
during his keynote speech at the General Assembly of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines held at Luzon. During the meeting, Sec. Roxas presented the LGU Disaster Preparedness Journal - A Checklist of Minimum Actions for Mayors prepared by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to serve as guide to local chief executives (LCEs) to help them prepare against the impacts of climate-change triggered natural calamities.
According to Sec. Roxas, LGUs are mandated by Republic Act 10121 or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010 to ensure the safety and resiliency of communities to face the challenges of disasters. Pursuant to its mandate, the DILG has identified sets of relevant interventions for disaster preparedness that aim to create an enabling environment for LGUs to further develop their capacities towards mitigating the adverse impact of disasters
and climate change. Moreover, Sec. Roxas stressed that all LGUs should come up with various measures such as the conduct of skills-building, technical support, policies, and training for all LGUs to be able to better respond to threats of natural calamities. The “Checklist of Minimum Actions for Mayors” calls for the creation of the local disaster risk reduction management structures and systems to be mobilized before, during and after natural
calamities; institutionalize policies and plans; enhance competency of the structures through various trainings; and compliment the competency by purchasing and preparing the needed hardware and supplies. -oooAlso, he urged LCEs to make use of the checklist as guide to disaster preparedness to achieve “zero casualty” and minimize losses in terms of people’s livelihood, and as much as possible, property.
