SP calls mayor to convene CPOC

THE Cagayan de Oro City Council has called on City Oscar S. Moreno to immediately convene the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC), if only to address the worsening peace and order situation in the city.

In Resolution No. 11433-2013, the city legislative body headed by City Vice Mayor Caesar Ian Acenes, cited the occurrence of three to four robberies in broad daylight, coupled with the rampant peddling of illegal drugs and killings in the locality.

DPWH completes projects in CDO THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWHFirst District Engineering Office) has completed several infrastructure projects in the city.

This is contained in the status report of OIC-District Engineer Yolanda Egam to the City Council committee on public works, as of June, this year.

Such completed projects include repair/rehabilitation of the San Simon multi-purpose building; construction of Lumbia multi-purpose building; construction of water systems at Tumpagon, Tuburan, Tignapoloan and Pigsag-an; Road gravelling at Canitoan; repair/rehabilitation of school building at Balulang National High School, and repair/rehabilitation of Bon-

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY Inflow of new investments in Northern Mindanao for the first quarter of 2013 reached P3.44 billion, up by 223 percent from the P1.06 billion recorded in the same period in 2012.

Engr. Cecilio Clarete, chief economic development specialist of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA-10), said the increase was driven by the 419 percent increase in investments in Misamis Oriental and 602 percent increase in Lanao del Norte, particularly in Iligan City.

Misamis Oriental recorded

P2.37 billion of investments sharing 69 percent of the total regional investments while Lanao del Norte posted P688 million or 20 percent of the total.

Clarete said the increase in investments in Misamis Oriental is mostly from infrastructure and services sector which is 78.6 percent of the total investments in the region.

Major investments in the province include construction and expansion of tourism and business-related facilities, such as that of Seda Hotel, Primavera Condotel, Tune Hotel, Monte Carlo Hotel and partial development of Alberto Resort.

He said most of the investments in Lanao del Norte are also classified under the infra and services sector which constitute plant expansion of Pilmico Foods Corporation and building renovation of Madelicious bakery in Iligan City.

Other investments in Lanao del Norte also include expansion of coffee production and establishment of school building in Tubod, he added.

The other three provinces meanwhile posted the following investments: Misamis Occidental with P226 million, Bukidnon with P115 million and Camiguin with P35 million. (APB/PIA-10/jdelpf )

The Loop to rise in CDO’s central business district

Cagayan de Oro City-To equip participants with the knowledge on the initiatives undertaken for the sustainable development of the Cagayan de Oro River Basin (CDORB), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region 10 (DENR 10) spearheaded a Stakeholders’ Capacitation Seminar on June 28 this city.

The training provided the participants from government and private sectors updates on environmental issues and its impact on the river basin.

DENR 10 Regional Executive Director Ruth M. Tawantawan was represented by Forest Management Services Regional Technical Director Agustilo Obsioma.

Director Obsioma said that development activities are being undertaken within the watershed and there are other initiatives introduced by civil society organizations, local government units and other public institutions.

The topics of the seminar include the profile of the Cagayan de Oro River Basin discussed by Forester Fidel Gamos, Jr. of the Forest Resources Development Division; DENR Interventions and the National Greening Program (NGP) by Forester Dario Barbarona of the Planning and Management Division; and Vulnerability Assessment by Science Research Specialist Lydia Tiongco. Infra, livelihood projects turned-over to four NorMin towns

The Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) continues to implement interventions that focus on poverty reduction to more farming communities in Region 10.

Under its rural infrastructure component, MRDP has recently turned over seven rehabilitated, upgraded and constructed farm-to-market roads (FMRs) in Lanao del Norte, Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon amounting to P 36,457,947.07.

These include the upgrading of the 2.3 km.Matampay Ilaya-Dumar-

awang Ilaya FMR and the 2.36 km-Raw-an FMR, the rehabilitation of the 2.39 km.-Tenazas-Pendulonan FMR and the construction of the 1.7 km.-CabasaganSan Isidro-Upper-Magpatao FMR in Lala, Lanao del Norte; the upgrading of the 2.568 km.-NabataanSalagsag-Yungod FMR in Salay, Misamis Oriental; the upgrading of the 0.942 km.Sumalag FMR in Kinoguitan, Misamis Oriental; and the rehabilitation of the 2.574 km.-Ocasion-Licoan FMR in Sumilao, Bukidnon.

The infrastructure project is seen to cover 6,260.81

hectares of farm areas that produce agricultural commodities such as rice, corn, root crops, industrial crops, fruits and vegetables grown by 3,569 farming households.

Constancio C. Maghanoy, Jr., DA-10 Regional Technical Director encouraged the residents and investors within the farming communities to support the local government unit in their efforts for the proper operation and maintenance of the FMR. Thus, the MRDP also conducted a training on Barangay Roads Operations and Maintenance (BROM)

among barangay officials, representatives from the municipal local government unit, investors, other agri-stakeholders and project beneficiaries which will serve as guide for them in ensuring that the road is well maintained.

Meanwhile, 12 livelihood projects under the Community Fund for Agricultural Development (MRDP-CFAD) were also handed-over to the local government unit of Libona and to the farmers and people’s organizations in Sumilao, Bukidnon amounting to P4.5M.

Five barangays in Libona, Bukidnon will benefit from livelihood projects such as the establishment of four solar dryers with warehouse for corn and production of sweet corn, while eight people’s and farmers’ organizations in Sumilao, Bukidnon will benefit from livelihood projects on integrated high value vegetable production, agricultural livelihood development, high value vegetable production for protected area management, integrated rice and vegetable production and integrated livestock production.

MisOr VG Pelaez invites for an active scouting movement

Misamis Oriental (MisOr) Vice Governor Jose Mari “Joey” G. Pelaez would like to see a very active scouting movement in Misamis Oriental under his chairmanship. He said it before the MisOr council of Boy Scouts of the Philippines Eastern Mindanao Region (BSP-EMR) first regular board meeting, July 18, 2013.

“We have to make scouting movement active in MisOr now, so that it would be a Happy MisOr,” he happily said.

The council is planning to have an EMR-Regional Scouts Jamboree at the BSP Camp Bulatukan, Makilala, Cotabato this August, evolving in the theme “Scouting: Education for Life.” They are targeting 100 participants from Misamis Oriental. They are also planning to conduct a three-day Basic Training Courses to newly-hired teachers in

Gingoog City by the last week of July. Next locations for their plans would be at Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) and nearby secondary schools.

The BSP-EMR MisOr Council is more on the promotions of BSP to various sectors in the province. They talked on local mobilization and other ways to encourage individuals, young and adults alike, to join them in their movement.

MisOr vice guv also said that he wanted to see a lot of scouting activities among barangays and municipalities. In this way, jamborees and trainings would be easy to sell and thus, attracting an increase of membership.

In addition, more teachers would also be enticed in supporting the BSP. He also added that his office is open for communication purposes. It was mentioned also that the capitol will extend help for BSP activities.

Oro Chamber lauds ‘Hapsay Dalan’ The Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (ORO CHAMBER) lauds the city government’s move to widen major roads by phasing out the mini stalls of sidewalk vendors and even halt the operations of the famed Night Café.

The business group is happy to note that sales have improved among many of its member-companies especially those located in the Divisoria area.

“We are happy to receive reports from our members on sales improvement,” said Oro Chamber President Efren Uy. Mr. Uy believes that in freeing the streets with sidewalk vendors, legitimate enterprises can already cater to more customers because of increased visibility of their stores, not to mention the absence of clutter.

Past President Antonio Uy, who owns Marny’s Fastfood and Wang’s Tea Fuzion, shared that conveniencewise, the business operation improved. Before, they had difficulty loading and unloading the food containers as the vehicle would be normally parked two or three blocks

away from the store due to traffic and the helter-skelter in Divisoria.

“The city is now clean,” Mr. Tony Uy reiterated.

FDIs, free trade boon or bane?

IN this high-tech age of communications, truth manipulation is not farfetched. But such manipulation becomes a matter to be wary about when intellectual leaders of the country become victims to it.

Over the years, we as a people have been made to believe that economic growth and development is hinged on foreign capital being poured into the local economy.

And to assure the free flow of foreign capital into the domestic economy, we were likewise made to believe that foreign business interests should be accorded unhampered operations and be left to their own designs in dong business here.

To achieve this economic objective, parity rights were granted to the citizens of the country, America, which colonized us and only forced to grant our independence in 1946 because of the worldwide clamor of colonized countries for independence. That right granted American citizens equal rights with Filipinos to own land here and exploit our rich natural resources.

The grant of that right was made a condition sine qua non for the granting of our independence by our American colonizers. It was this treaty that many say made our independence a sham. The parity rights treaty expired in 1974.

Ghost projects are old songs

IT has been several decades that the general public learned of the so-called ghost projects in the government and until now they are still making news.

The only difference is that in the present, the amount involved in the ghost projects is to the tune of billions of pesos while those of the yesteryears were somewhere by the millions.

Whatever it is, this scam in the government relative to inexistent projects has truly contributed to impoverish the country. More than enough to cripple the country on its existence.

For instance, a concrete bridge amounting to millions of pesos, appear in the document as had been constructed in a certain place in Mindanao but in truth and in fact, there is no such thing as bridge.

Or asphalting or cementing of roads in some areas that cost millions but never has a project like that ever existed. This is the spirit of ghost projects.

A lot of people should be involved here because so many have to sign documents, receipts, etc.

These people should have been in jail for so long but I think for some reasons, they are free. And some of them must have been dead already.

A financial system you can bank on

MANY factors play in the success of an economy and one of these is the presence of a sound financial system.

In the Philippines, the financial system is composed of banks and non-bank financial intermediaries that channel the savings of households, firms or governments into loans and investments.

At any given time, there will be those with excess funds and those who are short of and in need of funds. What the financial system does is that it acts as a go-between between suppliers of funds and users of funds so that these resources can be used more productively and in the process help grow our economy.

they adhere to strict good governance and that at all times bankers discharge their fiduciary responsibilities which require high standards of integrity and performance.

The BSP also requires banks to maintain a healthy and adequate capitalization, not just to service the needs of their client but also to be able to withstand unforeseen shocks, whether external or

internal.

Capital Adequacy Ratio or CAR has thus become a very good indicator of the banking system’s resiliency.

CAR has breached 17 pct and is expected to go higher as the BSP presses early compliance with Basel III capitalization requirements

by January 2014.

Banks in general have shown increasing trends both in deposit generation and in lending. These are indicative of the steadily growing confidence of the general public in the formal banking system.

As a measure of bank’s lending standards, nonperforming loans have also dropped to record lows.

Advanced directives: should we or should we not

IN ONE of the case conferences that I attended, I overheard a group of Clinical Clerks discussing one of their patients, who is terminally ill. The one in charge of this particular patient was preparing the clinical summary just in case her patient dies.

A member of her team was teasing her, why so early a summary, just because her patient has a DO NOT RESUSCITATE ORDER? I was struck by her answer: I want to facilitate the release of my patient in order not to delay further the family.

Whew! I salute this incoming member of the Medical Community.

In our country, being a tightly knit family and all,

into a Cardiac Arrest or, patients who become comatose, or sometimes termed as basket cases, wherein life is being sustained by mechanical ventilators, and tubing everywhere. You can feel the pain and stress of the family and friends who watch a loved one in this condition. It would be worth it, though, if the patient will come off it, better. But studies have shown that survival rate once a patient undergoes resuscitation is in the 6-15%, in a hospital setting. The BSP is not just a regulator and supervisor of banks. The BSP is also very active in advancing its advocacy of inclusive finance and consumer protection.

The BSP is mindful that while deposits have indeed grown, there are still many out there, especially in the countryside, who belong to the so-called “un-served” or “underserved”.

To reach out to them, BSP teams regularly go out to the fields teaching financial literacy. A good many of those who attend the financial literacy programs are OFW families. Of late, the BSP has partnered with the Department of Education to incorporate financial literacy lessons in core academic subjects.

The BSP’s message: Learn to distinguish between your wants and needs. Spend for your needs but postpone spending for your wants.

Make it a habit to save what you don’t spend. Better still, make it a habit to save in banks.

I just cannot figure out how come the government has not been able to stop this ugly practice for so long a time. What have our leaders been doing about this?

I think I have not heard from Adam that someone or some people who indulged in this malicious endeavor had been sent to jail.

So I suppose so many top officials in the government service should already be behind bar especially at this time when the money involved has reached the peak of billions of pesos.

If we prosecute small time thieves for stealing a pair of shoes worth a few hundreds of pesos, why not these giants in crimes?

If this irregularity could not be stopped for some reasons, I suggest the government better legalize this and let people involved pay taxes on the billions of pesos they get.

Create other requirements by which we can charge more for such system.

At least in this way the country will get some amount as income. Of course, we know for a fact that in this manner it is like putting the horse behind the caretela. Maybe our country is really that rich and needs some places to throw money.

But if we still believe in good government and good society, then let us prosecute the thieves in the government service.

Authors of ghost projects should be in jail including all people involved.

Run after those people who were involved but had retired already.

They should also be prosecuted for such crime.

But, I believe that it is always good to understand the basics of an Advanced Directive or a DO NOT RESUSCITATE. There must be a balance between quality of life and quality of death.

An Advanced Directive is but a wish list, that a patient would want done or not done to him/her. It contains his/her desire as to the extent of medical attendance to his/her needs like, being attached to a mechanical ventilator, whether an endotracheal intubation is preformed, defibrillation done when the heart stops, medications that will be given or withheld. A DNR on one hand is written as an order by the Attending Doctor, as per instruction of the patient or the family.

This is written down in the chart. Just like an advanced directive, it also mentions what should be or should not be done to the patient, should the patient go into cardiac or respiratory arrest.

In both instances, basic medical care like the giving of oxygen is not denied the patient.

It is important to discuss these matters with their Clinician, in order to appreciate the medical condition of their patient, what to expect and the prognosis, in order for them to arrive at an informed decision.

It eases the burden on the family in making that crucial decision with regards the continuance or discontinuance of certain treatment modalities for their terminally ill patients. A major consideration would be, if the benefits far outweigh the burden, and if the intervention can improve the quality of living of the patient. But more than the unburdening the family,

is the very thought, that the patient is spared from the unnecessary pain and suffering. For to die with dignity is as much of a right as well as a gift.

When Marcos became very sick, America was forced to withdraw its support for his dictatorial regime. And when Estrada showed signs of being nationalist in his stance proved by his closer association with the local businessmen in Binondo than with the Makati Business Club, he was ousted from power.

In the case of Marcos, the cry for his ouster was legitimate. He had become ruthless after being corrupted by absolute power aside from being too sick already to lead the country.

But in the case of Estrada, it was different. Official pronouncement had it that he was ousted because of jueteng, the illegal numbers game. However, did you hear of any barangay captain removed from office because of jueteng which is very rampant in Luzon?

If a barangay captain can’t be removed from office because of jueteng, is it believable for a president to be removed from office because of jueteng? Was Estrada not impeached over whelmingly by the House of Representatives because at that time he did not give the congressmen their pork barrel that we now want totally abolished?

Is it not funny that when Estrada was impeached by congressmen deprived of their pork barrel we did not support him but now we want the same pork barrel abolished? My friends what happened to Estrada and even Marcos is a clear case of truth manipulation.

We were all made to believe they deserved the fate that befell them.

This is the same truth manipulation that is being peddled to justify changing our Constitution so that

12 killed, wounded in clan war in Lanao del Sur

PAGADIAN City––At least a dozen people were killed and wounded in fierce clashes between two warring Muslim families in the southern Philippines, the military told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner on Sunday.

It said the weekend fighting erupted after the protagonists – Capal and Macugar families – incidentally crossed path in the village of Linao in Ladao del Sur’s Bayang town.

The fighting lasted almost an hour leaving 4 people dead and two wounded on the side of Capal family and 3 more slain and three others wounded on Macugar family. But there could be more casualties as some of the dead were dragged by their kin.

The clashes only stopped after secu-

rity forces arrived and pacified the two warring groups. Troops helped recovered the dead and turned them over to their families.

It was not immediately known whether the military or police arrested any of the leaders or followers of the two warring families. But among those killed were Hajji Naim Capal and Latip Capal, who were reportedly clan leaders.

The others who were slain on the side of Capal family had been identified as Abar Balt and Al-radji Tanggor, and the wounded Arip Bacolod and Pao. While on the Macugar family, those killed were named as Cader Dumato, Hajji Ahmad Dimacuta and Salahoden Dimacota, and the wounded were Sameto Piang and Saidamen Macugar. (Mindanao Examiner)

Carlos Zarate and Kabataan Rep. Terry Ridon – said they will also vote for San Juan District Rep. Ronnie Zamora as minority leader.

“We, seven party list representatives comprising the Makabayan bloc in Congress, announce today our decision to bolt from the majority coalition in the House of Representatives and join the minority

to sharpen our opposition against the anti-Filipino and anti-people policies and program of the Aquino administration,” a statement sent to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner said.

“Three years is enough for the nation to conclude that the Aquino regime’s real bosses are not the people but the United States, the foreign and local monopolists and the landed oligarchy,” it said.

The decision of the lawmakers to bolt the majority coalition came ahead of Aquino’s State of the Nation Address.

The lawmakers said they will oppose the legislative agenda and policies of the Aquino administration which favor foreign banks and corporations, big business, landlords and corrupt bureaucrats, and instead

press for meaningful economic, political and socials reforms.

“We believe that we can more effectively unmask and oppose Aquino’s antiFilipino, anti-people and deceptive policies as part of the minority. We vow to vigorously resist Aquino’s rabid subservience to U.S. military and economic impositions, including the return of U.S. military bases,” the statement said.

The legislators said they will reject moves by Aquino’s allies in Congress to amend the Constitution to institutionalize globalization and extend term limits of elected officials.

There is no truth to the claim of Rodriguez and company. Economic development can never come from without but always from within. Look at America and China.

Did these two countries develop because FDIs were poured into their domestic economies? No, sir!

America and China worked hard putting in place the basic economic fundamentals leading to their industrialization with-

out any FDI. They first developed their agriculture and with a highly developed agriculture went into manufacturing and eventually went into highly mechanized farming and highly mechanized manufacturing.

China even shut its doors from any foreign business interests salivating over its gigantic population and rich natural resources that they want to be consumers of their goods and as source of their raw materials, respectively.

To imagine that FDIs can help propel the economy is misplaced. Logically and realistically, can we expect our rich neighbor to financially help us so we can improve our economic lot?

FDIs are never poured with

the intention of helping the host country of such money to develop economically.

FDIs are tools of the rich countries to perpetually oppress and exploit poorer countries to forever become their dumping ground for their surplus goods and capital so that they can maximize their profit to unimaginable levels.

A personal note: Allow me to correct an error in yesterday’s column. The killing of the two Ozamiz gang leaders happened in San Pedro, Laguna not in San Pablo. My apologies!

Cagayan de Oro City is starting to get into its celebratory mood as the city fiesta draws nearer and nearer each day. As per tradition to the said celebration, the competition for the most elegant and talented woman of CDO is also starting to get the attention of city residents.

The Ms. Cagayan de Oro or Ms. CDO competition just recently had their public press presentation on Saturday July 13, 2013 where the 12 candidates were publicly introduced to the press and residents of the city.

The candidates were at ages 1823, most of them being students whereas 2 are already working.

So far in the history of Ms. CDO competitions, this is one of the first to be organized by a non-government civic organization, which is the JCI’s Bai Lawanen chapter in CDO. But that doesn’t exclude the help of

the city government in organizing such event.

According to Ms. Gean TulangCeasar, Bai Lawanen member and Project Chairwoman of Ms. CDO, the government couldn’t be able to give their focus and time on the said event because of the political situation wherein the city just got under a recent

change in administration. Thus they sought for help in JCI’s Bai Lawanen.

Another first of the Ms. CDO competition is the press presentation was made public, whereas traditionally it was held in private like in hotel conference rooms.

This year they were presented in Lim Ket Kai’s rotunda, and

The organization’s goal for the Ms. CDO winner is tourism related, as they would want to send someone for national presentation and take her on an Asian trip, where she will be promoting global awareness.

“Equally promising.” was the terms she used to describe the girls this year. Then again it may be too early to tell who will be crowned this year’s Ms. CDO.

There are 15 of them in the competition; 11 from host city, two from General Santos City and another two from CDO. According to Daven, he and his colleague from CDO really made a big sacrifice just for the competition, thinking that they are the lone city which is far away from Davao.

From that 15 then, top 6 will be determined. And after series of evaluation, Daven placed last in the Top 6.

Being in the Top 6 is somewhat lucky and a threat to Daven because it is possible that he will be eliminated afterwards. So, he did her best for the second time.

Like a typical contestant,

Daven got nervous and so tensed. In addition, he was the one first called to present. Through his anxiety, he composed himself by saying “This is it.” After, he walked straight to the stage and presented the coffee he made.

All participants went above and beyond in order to win the competition. Luckily, through his determination, Daven championed the Mindanao Elimination for Philippine Barista Cup 2013!

Daven was so happy that his effort was paid off. He also said that the competition helped him a lot especially in boosting his confidence which is very important in his field of work. He also learned more things about coffee and those coffees he have not encountered yet.

When asked who are his inspiration in winning, he said “My family and of course, my son.” His statement clearly give out that there’s someone behind a successful man. The preparations, though done in the short time, have also helped him in winning.

Daven will be competing and represent Mindanao in the WOFEX 2013 this July 29th at World Trade Center Manila. Together with him will be the representatives from Visayas, Luzon and Metro Manila.

For now, Daven is busy preparing for the national competition. He practices three times a week. He also enhancing his speaking skills since he need to be more confident in delivering his explanations before the judges.

And whatever the result there, Daven is already the champion for his friends and his family.

When the door of opportunity opened, Daven did not hesitate to go back on his way but instead pushed his self forward and opened the door wider. The optimism in him brought him in a place he did not expect to land years before. As a quotation goes, a dreamer can dream and live his dream.

To all dreamers like this barista, all he want to advise is “Kung love nila ilang ginabuhat or kana nga direction, i-push nila ilang self dadto.” (“If they love what they do and that direction, they should push their selves there.”)

Self-motivation, indeed, is a value an aspiring champion should have.

Daven got a very short time to prepare due to his late registration and other businesses. He, however, practiced in coffee-mixing and studied the products he will be going to use. Using his own money and some assistance from the company and his solicitors, he packed up and headed to Davao City for the competition.

The competition is so tough that it required two set of judges. There are four judges for the Technical Judge and another four for the Century Judge. The first set is assigned to assess how a barista made the beverage.

Philippines joins world movement vs coal plant DAVAO City––On the eve of the global day of action against coal, Filipinos showed their opposition to dirty energy in a series of protest rallies, adding their voices to the growing movement across the world that seeks to end the age of coal to save the world’s climate.

More than 60 events are being organized in 12 countries, some of which are key coal battlegrounds.

Davao and Greenpeace, marched along historic Freedom Park, with a giant banner saying “End the Age of Coal.”

“Filipinos deserve to live in a coal-free environment. We want to be free from worries and fears that dirty fossil fuels like coal bring,” said Beau Baconguis, program manager for Greenpeace Southeast Asia.

Baconguis said: “The Philippines is already bearing the brunt of climate change impacts. It is simply illogical and immoral to pump more carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, which will only bring more destruction to the nation and will jeopardize the health and security of the country.”

All over the world, communities, business groups, and civil society are standing up and taking bold steps to pressure their gov-

ernments to switch from coal to clean, sustainable, renewable energy.

Greenpeace said the aggressive development

of coal-fired power plants in the country is almost criminal and contradicts the spirit of the Renewable Energy Law and other environmental laws that seek to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

The share of renewable energy in the total power generation continues to dwindle as the share for coal steadily increases year on year.

In fact, there are 26 coal-fired power plant

project proposals in the offing, 14 of which are already committed and 12 are indicative, said the Greenpeace.

“If all are constructed and become operational, it will surely edge out renewable energy technologies altogether, and lock us to dirty energy in the next three to four decades,” Baconguis stressed.

Anti- coal communities organized different activities to protest against dirty energy and to make way for a new age powered by clean, renewable energy.

Cebu saw a flotilla of boats protesting near the KEPCO coal plant in Naga City, while in Zamboanga, an End the Age of Coal

forum was held at the Western Mindanao State University. More mass public actions are set to take place in Bataan, Zambales, and Sarangani on June 29, the official global day of coal action.

“We will not allow the government’s short sighted vision bind us into a dirty energy future, which we are already paying a heavy price tag for its impacts,” said Dr. Jean Lindo of No To Coal Davao. “It’s time to take action and end the discussion: let’s end the age of coal!”

NGCP conducts nationwide Arbor Day tree-planting

For the employees of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), the five-kilometer off-road truck ride and hour-long trek to a watershed in Mt. Malaraya, Lipa, Batangas is a small price to pay in exchange for the survival of Philippine forests.

The tree-planting activity spearheaded by NGCP’s Environmental Management Division was conducted in support to the National Arbor Day celebration. Nine hundred twenty (920) tree seedlings were successfully planted by more than 80 employee-volunteers of NGCP’s Diliman Office who were assisted by the National Power Corporation (NPC) Makban personnel.

The tree seedlings, which included Kusibeng (Scientific name: Sapindus saponarea), Narra (Pterocarpus indicus),

Acacia (Samanea saman), and Bani (Pongamia pinnata), were placed within NGCP’s one-hectare reforestation project site.

The project is also part of NGCP’s agreement with the National Power Corporation to replace trees that were cleared for the construction of the Lumban Extra High Voltage (EHV)- Bay 230 kilovolt (kV) Transmission Line Project.

“Protecting the environment is one advocacy that NGCP takes very seriously.

We are constant supporters of the National Greening Program and we are also committed to make our operations as environmentally-sound as possible. Our reforestation program is one way of contributing to that advocacy,” affirmed Environmental Management Division Head Julia

Echavez.

Simultaneous tree-planting activities were also conducted by the satellite offices of NGCP in San Fernando, La Union and Santo Tomas, Batangas. More regional and field offices of NGCP are expected to conduct their tree-planting session over the next few weeks.

NGCP is a privately owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining, and developing the country’s power grid. It transmits highvoltage electricity through “power superhighways” that include the interconnected system of transmission lines, towers, substations, and related assets. NGCP’s regular maintenance activities and expansion projects aim to enhance the reliability and quality of electricity delivered to customers.

Arbor Day is annually celebrated by NGCP through a series of tree-planting activities in various areas across the country. Among other kinds of seedlings, kusibeng, narra, acacia, and bani were planted in Mt. Malaraya, one of the company’s reforestation project sites.
