Gun ban starts today; poll chief reminds public to be wary of illegal searches AS the gun ban officially starts on Sunday, Commission on Elections Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. reminded the public to be aware of their rights and be wary of illegal searches. “Start of the gun ban does not suspend your constitutional rights against illegal searches and seizure. Know
and assert your rights at all times,” Brillantes said in his official Twitter account. Brillantes and several Comelec officials, together with police authorities, made rounds of some checkpoints in Metro Manila. He also reminded gun owners that all permits to carry firearms outside
residence (PTCFOR) are “suspended and shall be without force and effect.” Under Comelec Resolution 9385 which laid out the calendar of activities and prohibited acts as stated in the Omnibus Election Code, those running for public office are banned from using security person-
nel or bodyguards, unless authorized by the poll body. Government agencies are also prohibited from transferring officers and employees as well as suspension of elective local officials and organization or maintenance of reaction forces. Under the OEC, the car-
rying of firearms during the election period is considered an election offense. Meanwhile, the poll body is set to release the certified list of voters on Feb 12 (Tuesday), the same day the campaign period for senators and party-list groups begin. “This means carrying/
bearing of firearms, WITH OR WITHOUT license, starting January 13, 2013 will constitute as an election offense,” he said. “I pray for a clean, honest, orderly and successful 2013 elections. May God bless us all!” he added. The gun ban will end on June 12. (PNA)
TWO reports on the results of a research on transport issues affecting the movement of vegetables from Mindanao will soon be released. The reports contain the findings of a research titled “Transport Policy Study Promoting Efficiency and Productivity of Flow of Goods: A Focus on the Transportation Needs of Mindanao Region” funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). The published reports are expected to be available for distribution to the public early this year, according to the Philippine government-hosted Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study
and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA). Implemented by SEARCA headed by Director Gil C. Saguiguit, Jr., the project is part of ACIAR’s economic research on enhanced profitability of selected vegetable and fruit value chains in Southern Philippines and Australia. SEARCA reported that the findings of the micro analysis that looked into the bottlenecks in the transport system (road and port networks) for selected vegetables and fruits have resulted in policy directions and development approaches that would provide greater incentives for Mindanao to improve the quality and quantity of its agricultural products.
The findings are also expected to bring about expansion of Mindanao’s trade to meet the perceived growing market demand within and outside the island. Started in August 2010, the transport policy study analyzed the marketing flow of selected agricultural products and the factors that contribute to the trade-related problems facing the key players in the supply chain, particularly the high cost of transportation and logistics, as they are influenced by government regulations and investment programs. “Specifically, fruits such as papaya and vegetables such as tomato and lettuce coming from Mindanao
were covered in the study to focus on the importance of improving the transport infrastructure in Mindanao,” said Dr. Bessie M. Burgos, SEARCA Acting Program Head for Research and Development. The study was conceptualized following the 2007 “SEARCA-ACIAR Workshop on Rural Development Initiatives and the Philippine Policy Environment: What is the Real Score?” During the workshop, transport and shipping services were identified as among the key factors affecting the marketing and trade of fruits and vegetables in Mindanao, regarded as the food basket of the Philippines.

SELF MOTIVATION: A POWER By Elaine P. Tenedero Don Carlos National High School Sinangguyan, Don Carlos, Bikidnon
“Self motivation raises a man to any level he seeks.” So goes a famous line.. Instead of just getting stuck or satisfied with where we are intellectually and even personally, let us motivate ourselves to raise our capabilities to the level that others we admire or even envy have proudly reached. Let us take learning on cue. Some may not be aware that it is a developmental or a continuous process that goes along with change. Learning can take a place anytime and anywhere if one only pays interest and shows sensitivity to the things and circumstances that would bring growth. Learning does not end or happen only in the classroom. Thus, what one had acquired in college or even in his postgraduate studies is not a guarantee that he is already fully equipped with everything for the intellect. It must be a need for one to continue learning- a sustained interest towards keeping one’s self abreast with recent facts, wholesome ideas and valuable information. In addition learning coupled always with selfevaluation will also work effectively to a person. By this, one can be sure of what he is or will be doing. He will not go for or impart things that will mislead or cause misinformation. Raising the level of one’s capability can truly happen if he motivates himself to grow intellectually as well as personally, if one is open to criticism, and if he considers himself like a cup to be filled to make him a truly learned and competent person. Self-motivation is a power that will help a person, young or old, become effective, better and eventually the best in his place, in his craft. Advertorial

TEACHING AS A PROFESSION By: Elaine P. Tenedero Don Carlos National High School Sinangguyan, Don Carlos, Bukidnon
Teaching as a profession is a gigantic role to play in the society. It is a noble task that requires putting one’s whole self to it if one,who is a teacher, would like to claim that he is successful and has done his gigantic role well. Because of the multi-tasks that are embedded in teaching, a teacher must possess the attitudes and values for him to continue with the job happily, satisfactory, enthusiastically and zestfully. Teaching as a profession does not mean teaching and facilitating only in front of the students, giving tests and giving grades. Aside from these, a teacher does many other tasks like managing the class to maintain cleanliness, orderliness and discipline, motivating students to get involved in curricular and co- curricular activities, tapping the potential of the students, remediating poorly performing students, communicating with parents about their children, monitoring the students’ attendance in school, giving advice to the students with problems, initiating projects so to help the school improve physically, linking with people in the community, taking care of school properties, persuading parents and people to extend their moral and material support to the school, writing reports, etc. Indeed, teaching is a vocation. It is a calling. For those, who have really fathomed the depths of teaching, but lack the inner drive and the right attitude towards the job, they have left and looked for other sources of living which for them are not stressful and financially rewarding. Those ,who have understood what teaching is and why God has destined them to be in this kind of work, have remained patiently and painstakingly in the name of public service and work security no matter how simple life is lived and how loaded with teaching responsibilities. To be a teacher and to stay in teaching - a job that entails sacrifice and modesty - one must have the commitment, discipline, open-mindedness and love towards the job.

DENR-XI starts reforestation in typhoon-hit areas By Carina L Cayon
DAVAO City – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-XI) will soon start reforesting and rehabilitating the typhoon Pablo-affected areas of Compostela Valley Province and Davao Oriental. Through the cash for work scheme, members of people’s organizations (POs) and barangays residents will be hired for a continuous period of 90 days for site preparation, hauling of seedlings and the actual tree planting. The workers shall be paid using the social mobilization fund of NGP following the minimum wage law which is presently at P301.00 per day. DENR-11 Regional Executive Director Joselin Marcus E. Fragada said the cash for work scheme, under the NGP will be the source of income for some typhoon victims in the area. “Despite what happened, we will never cease from doing our best to reforest and rehabilitate the areas damaged by the typhoon and will also continue to plant
damaged plantations established from year 2009 to 2012, under the Upland Development Program and NGP covering a total area of 7,533 hectares. It was the first management meeting done by Mendoza, since he assumed the new post in the region, following a recent major shake-up in DENR-13 by Secretary Ramon JP Paje, June this year. “Henceforth, all plating materials that will be planted for the National Greening Progran (NGP) in all sites must either come from the

He also discouraged the practice of “pwede na or bahala na” attitude in preparing planting materials for the NGP because it only results in poor growth and low productivity. He said the ‘to all extent possible, only indigenous tree species shall be planted’ in the protection forest area, which has a total of 339,963 hectares or about 30 percent (30%) of the total land area of the region of 1,913,842 hectares. After years of working abroad, since 1990, Roberto Garcia Panghulan, 52, came back to the Philippines focusing his attention on the coconut trees at his wife’s family farm in Sultan Kudarat province. THINK a minute. In 1946, the United States Army showed to the public its brand new 30-ton computer called the ENIAC. All the credit for this invention was given to two men, John Mauchly and J. Eckert. But it was actually a group of six women who programmed the computer and made this complex machine work. None of those six women were recognized for their amazing work and achievement. Not until today, have historians showed this injustice and given these women the credit they earned. Sadly, throughout history women and mothers have often not been given the honor and recognition they deserve.
Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst Yet the great French leader and conqueror, Napolean, said: “The future of a child is usually the work of the mother.” And history proves it! In fact, many of the greatest men and leaders of the world have proudly admitted that they became strong men because of their mothers’ teaching and example. They were proud to be “mama’s boys!”

Some of these great men were American Presidents, including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, and we could go on and on. George Washington, the first President of the United States said: “All that I am I owe to my mother…I credit all of my success in life to the moral and intellectual
training I received from her.” It’s clear throughout history that women and mothers are some of the most important, powerful people in the world. Proving true the saying: “The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.” Jesus Christ Himself clearly showed that women are just as important to God as men. So won’t you ask your Maker to help you see and value yourself the same way He does? Then, whether you’re a woman or a man, ask Jesus to forgive and help you change so you will start showing honor and respect to your mother, or wife, by the way you treat her. Just Think a Minute.
ebration in front of the City Hall’s administration building in Cagayan De Oro City took place. Obviously, the fanfare created a mock scenario of an election victory. Supporters of City Mayor Vicente ‘Dongkoy’ Emano were overwhelmed when the deadline for suspending elected public officials ended Friday afternoon. Rep. Benjo Benaldo, who was run- Cris Diaz ning for reelection under the Emanolead Padayon Pilipino, danced with the crowd at the tune of the popular ‘Gangnam’ beat. Padayon Pilipino leaders, barangay captains, and heads of various non-government organizations, particularly, the urban poor also shared their sentiments of support through speeches. Others sang to their heart’s content as a way of enlivening a crowd that surged like currents of warm bodies. Supporters and sympathizers of ‘Dongkoy’ Emano flocked to City Hall since Monday last week on rumors of an impending suspension order against him. Seventy barangay captains out of the city’s 80 barangays marched with their constituents towards City Hall in one of the largest movement of supporters prior to the start of election campaign this year. ‘If an election was held Friday, Emano and his ticket would certainly deliver a smashing victory,’ an onlooker was overheard. Another rally participant mused that
the gathering at City Hall served a strong message to Emano’s political opponents that the election scheduled in May, five months from now, was over. Political opponents accused Emano of ‘dereliction of duty’ when typhoon Sendong struck this trading hub in mid-December last year. Political enemies blamed Emano for the natural disaster that resulted in the death of hundreds of people and the enormous destruction of properties. They accused ‘Dongkoy’ of sleeping on his watch as typhoon ‘Sendong’ lashed its fury in that cold night of December. Although people believed that the charges against Emano would not prosper, political opponents were armed with high hopes that Malacanang might consider their distorted thoughts. Malacanang knew that to blame ‘Dongkoy’ of death and destruction in the aftermath of a natural disaster is the highest form of bigotry. What is, therefore, the motive of pursuing a case of rubbish? Adversaries in politics contended that isolation or disqualification is the only way to beat ‘Dongkoy’ in an electoral contest. However, the five-day barricade at City Hall only showed that supporters are willing to risk against all odds had the suspension order been served. Yet, it is not the time to sit on the laurels of last week’s triumphed. After all, the political enemies would always concoct anything that would incriminate ‘Dongkoy’ of claptrap cases. Greater hell in the hands of Filipinos
LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus…” (Galatians 3:26-28, the Holy Bible). -oooGREATER HELL IN THE HANDS OF FILIPINOS: Two Filipinas who ran away from their abusive employers in Saudi Arabia have found a greater hell in the hands of Filipinos who are supposed to help, assist, and protect them from harm. A report from Migrante Middle East said the women were sexuallyharassed by a Filipino working with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in
Kakampi mo ang batas Atty. Batas Mauricio Saudi, and then ignored by DFA Saudi officials when they complained. Certainly, this is no way to treat not only Filipinas seeking help after they had been abused and molested by their foreign employers, but Filipinas who are overseas Filipino workers lionized in the Philippines, by President Aquino no less, as the new heroes of the country, without whose dollars Philippine economy would have gone under a long time ago. And yet, I am sure that nothing is going to hap-
pen in this case again, as DFA’s main office here in Manila will be concerned mainly with a cover-up of the incident to protect its reputation, and mask its own inability to really help our countrymen suffering in the hands of foreigners abroad. May God have mercy on us all, more particularly the Filipinos who have to brave separation from their families and living in foreign lands totally alien to them just to earn. -oooPROPHECY OF SUFFERINGS FOR OFWs:
Indeed, one of the lesserknown prophecies in the Bible found in the book of Deuteronomy is playing itself out among many OFWs. The prophecy says: “If you no longer listen to the Lord your God, and no long obey His commands… all of these curses will overtake you… Your sons and daughters will be given to other nations, and you shall wear out your eyes waiting for them, powerless to lift a hand…” This prophecy is contained under Deuteronomy 28:15 and 32, and it would do OFWs and their families well to read this over and over again, and know that danger, suffering and even death certainly await them when they go abroad and work. But then, while the prophecy talks about danger and death for filipinos | page 10

The need to save First of two parts Why are banks important? Just a few weeks back, we observed National Banking Week—a special opportunity that seeks to highlight the benefits banks provide to society. National Banking Week, annually held every first week of January, enjoins all banking institutions and their branches to undertake promotional and publicity-generating activities regarding their significant role in the Filipino community, pursuant to Proclamation No. 2250 dated 10 December 1982. This year’s theme is “Masaganang Lipunan, Bunga ng Salaping Iniingatan. Mag-impok
sa Bangko.” The Financial Consumer Affairs Group (FCAG) of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, in its weekly e-newsletter, stressed the need for continuing campaign efforts to highlight the importance of saving in banks. Citing the 2009 Consumer Finance Survey conducted by the Bangko Sentral’s Department of Economic Statistics, the FCAG disclosed that eight out of ten or 78.5 percent of Filipino households still do not have a bank deposit account. The survey further showed that 92.8 percent of that figure stated “the lack of money” as the primary reason for the absence of a bank account. On the other

hand, the remaining 7.2 percent of the households cited the following: • do not need a bank/cash account (1.7 percent); • cannot manage an account (1.5 percent); • minimum balance is too high (1.2 percent); • do not like to deal with banks/financial institutions (1 percent); and • others not specified (1.8 percent). Lastly, the BSP data revealed that households in areas outside the National Capital Region were found less inclined to open bank accounts than those residing in Metro Manila. “What people ought to realize
is that saving money in banks is way more advantageous than keeping it elsewhere such as in piggy banks, in a locked drawer or cabinet at home, or through the traditional under-the-mattress approach,” the FCAG explained. The FCAG quoted the following reasons on why banks are important from financial websites www.topbusinessfinance.com and lawschool.unm.edu: • Safety—The bank remains the safest place to keep one’s money, according to FCAG. Banks maintain high security facilities that protect a depositor’s money from theft and safeguard it from the elements and other disasters such as fire, floods and the action of rodents or insects.

Speaking Out Ignacio Bunye • Interest—Instead of letting your money “sleep” at home, the FCAG advised, deposit it in the bank where it has the potential to earn interest. Australia govt funding research on vegetable movement from Mindanao Two reports on the results of a research on transport issues affecting the movement of vegetables from Mindanao will soon be released. The reports contain the findings of a research titled “Transport Policy Study Promoting Efficiency and Productivity of Flow of Goods: A Focus on the Transportation Needs of Mindanao Region” funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). The published reports are expected to be available for distribution to the public early this year, according to the Philippine government-hosted Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA). Implemented by SEARCA headed by Director Gil C. Saguiguit, Jr., the project is part of ACIAR’s economic research on enhanced profitability of selected vegetable and fruit value chains in Southern Philippines and Australia. SEARCA reported that the findings of the micro analysis that looked into the bottlenecks in the transport system (road and port net-
works) for selected vegetables and fruits have resulted in policy directions and development approaches that would provide greater incentives for Mindanao to improve the quality and quantity of its agricultural products. The findings are also expected to bring about expansion of Mindanao’s trade to meet the perceived growing market demand within and outside the island. Started in August 2010, the transport policy study analyzed the marketing flow of selected agricultural products and the factors that contribute to the traderelated problems facing the key players in the supply chain, particularly the high cost of transportation and logistics, as they are influenced by government regulations and investment programs. “Specifically, fruits such as papaya and vegetables such as tomato and lettuce coming from Mindanao were covered in the study to focus on the importance of improving the transport infrastructure in Mindanao,” said Dr. Bessie M. Burgos, SEARCA Actg Program Head for Research and Devt..

Billions needed to rehab banana plantations destroyed by typhoon CLOSE to one fifth of standing bananas in Mindanao were destroyed by typhoon Pablo last month that will cost at least Php 7 billion and take up to 12 months to rehabilitate. This was contained in the brief report made this
week to the PHILEXPORT News and Features by the Pilipino Banana Growers & Exporters Association (PBGEA) based in Davao City. The banana growers said that a total of 14,176 hectares of banana plantations,
Top Exporters recognized at the National Export Congress The Department of Trade and Industry in cooperation with the Export Development Council (EDC) and the Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. recognized 32 top performing exporters per sector and 2 business support organizations for their exemplary efforts in boosting the country’s export performance. The recognition was conferred during the National Export Congress held last December 5, 2012 at the Philippine Trade Training Center in Roxas Blvd, Pasay City. The National Export Congress which is the highlight of the National Exporters' Week 2012 (December 1-7, 2012) centered on the theme “Mabuhay ka, Exporter!” in recognition of the pursuit of the country’s more than 8,000 exporters to improve
their export standards and product quality in order to maintain their competitiveness in the international trade. The top export performers are: Amkor Technology Philippines, Inc. mostly located in Compostela Valley Province hardest hit by the cyclone early December. Some reports were not yet in. Hardest hit were those owned by small growers totaling 9,020 hectares plus corporate farms with 5,166 hectares of Cavendish bananas destroyed. The whole of Mindanao is host to 80,000 hectares of banana plantations, making the crop one of the country’s top fruit export, second only to pineapple. Third largest is Philippine mango. PBGEA estimated that potential revenue losses of the banana planters in terms of lost harvests for this year was put at Php 8 billion. Seen not to be delivered as a result of the typhoon this year were close to 50 million boxes of raw bananas at US $4 per box. It was a big blow to one of the few export industries that defied the global trade slowdown last year to make
up for the decline of the country’s manufactured exports for the whole of 2012 and keep Philippine total exports on the growth path in a very difficult year. Industry leaders doubted if the industry could recover fast enough to sustain double-digit growth this year. Bananas and other typhoon sensitive crops found home in Mindanao during the past century due to its reputation of being the only typhoon-free part of the country. In the past two years, however, typhoons began hitting the region, first in Northern Mindanao centered at Cagayan de Oro City and only last December, Compostela Valley. Unused to typhoons, the region saw the death of thousands of people, heavy losses of properties including homes, livestocks and crops. -- Abe P. Belena, PHILEXPORT News and Features.

(Coconut Oil). Special recognition was given to the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) and the Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc. (PHILEXPORT). According to Director Senen M. Perlada, of the Bureau of Export Trade
Promotion (BETP) and EDC, “The certificates of recognition are DTI’s way of affirming the efforts of our partner exporters in continuing to raise the quality of their products and services to maintain the country’s competitiveness in the region. It is, at the same time, our way of encouraging our partner-exporters to continue to face up to the challenges of international trade, including the continuing appreciation of the peso which may take its toll on our exporters’ price

The CDRRMC said water level at the Agusan River climbed to 3 meters above sea level last Friday which prompted it to issue Flood Alert Level 3 (Code 3) in the city and implement evacuation and relief operations along riverside and flood-prone areas. Water level has receded to 2.5 meters on Saturday, it said. Fortun said classes in pre-school, elementary and secondary levels will resume today (Monday) following Thursday’s and Friday’s suspensions because of the flashflood. In San Luis, Agusan del Sur, 125 people or 25 families were sheltered in Barangay Doña Flavia Gym, and 935 people or 187 families in Lanuza, Surigao del Sur were housed at the Poblacion Seminar House. RDRRMC-Caraga chair Blanche Gobenciong announced that all bridges and roads in Surigao del Sur particularly in the towns of Carrascal, Madrid, Lanuza, Barobo, Tagbina, Agusan del Sur in Talacogon, and San Luis are now passable. A detour bridge (Magmaman Bridge) in San Jose, Bislig City is totally damaged, she added.

poorer because all efforts would be futile if properties acquired through hard labor will only be destroyed
by floods and other calamities,” explained Villar. To avert occurrence of this worst scenario, Villar cited the need to clean our rivers, our creeks and other bodies of water especially Manila Bay. She said the LPPCHEA, also called Freedom Island, which is accessible from the Coastal Road, is a very important area for the nearby cities of Las Pinas and Paranaque and some municipalities of Cavite to prevent flooding. “All our waters go here, said Villar who served as Las Pinas City congresswoman for three terms or nine consecutive years. She said, regularly cleaning Manila Bay of tons of garbage and other debris is in consonance with the foundation’s partnership with radio DZRH. This year’s clean-up drive has for its theme, “Makabagong Bayanihan Manila Bay Clean Up”. The Villar Foundation had inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC) represented by radio station DZRH in its Manila Bay Cleanup drive. “The Villar Foundation and DZRH agree that this is not only a joint cooperative undertaking, but more importantly, it is a major public service activity that would help contribute to the promotion of a livable, healthier and ecological sustainable Manila Bay,” read the MoA. The Villar Foundation together with students and other volunteers also conduct weekly cleanups. “The more partners we work with, the better it will be for the environment,” she said. In cleaning Manila Bay, Villar was joined by at least 1,000 volunteers from schools, barangays, NGOs, socio-civic organizations, and other private individuals and groups. “We are pleased with the improvement that we are seeing at LPPCHEA. The number of truckloads of garbage that we are get-

ting here has considerably decreased. We attribute that to our consistent cleanup efforts,” she said. Villar has been vocal about her strong support for the protection of Manila Bay. Last March 16, 2012, she filed a petition for Writ of Kalikasan against a Manila Bay reclamation project that is seen to cause catastrophic flooding in the area. The Supreme Court granted her petition and issued a writ of kalikasan on April 10. “We will continue to support campaigns or drives to protect Manila Bay and neighboring areas including LPPCHEA. Moreover, we will continue to oppose projects that will cause damage and destruction to the bay and nearby cities,” cited Villar. If carried out, the Manila Bay reclamation project that Villar is opposing is seen to cause severe flooding in numerous barangays: 11 in Parañaque, 37 in Bacoor and 17 in Las Piñas. was evacuating residents of Barangay Buhangin, Sagod told MindaNews. Sagod said they expect the water level to rise by 1.2 meters more by 11 p.m. because of the high tide. The last time the city issued a Code Red was in January 2010. But the worst flood was in February 1962 when Butuan’s streets were under 15 feet of water and in some parts, as high as 20 feet after 57 days of rain. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in its 5 p.m. advisory on Thursday said the low pressure area (LPA) was estimated at 370 kilometers southeast of General Santos City as of 4 p.m. In its 11 a.m. advisory, it said the LPA earlier seen approaching east Mindanao had dissipated. Evacuation of residents in riverside barangays such as Lemon, Pigdaulan, Mahay, Buhangin, Banza, Golden Ribbon, and P-4 Obrero was ordered as early as 10 a.m.

Classes in both public and private elementary and high schools were immediately suspended by the local government as soon as Alert Level 2 or Code Yellow was issued. Code Yellow was issued at 10 a.m. when the water level rose to 2.5 meters. All flights to and from Butuan City were immediately suspended, as well as flights to Surigao City. The city government immediately set up an emergency coordinating center inside City Hall while Father Saturnino Urios University set up its emergency relief center inside its gymnasium which will also be used to help coordinate with the rescue and relief operations. Nokie Calunsag, information officer for Green Mindanao and a resident of Barangay Baan riverside, said as early as 3 a.m. Thursday, the barangay streets were starting to flood. “The tributary of the river in Barangay Mahay started to overflow which also added to the flooding in Barangay Baan. This morning the water level was already above the knee and my mother and wife immediately evacuated to the center. The mode of transportation now is by canoe,” said Calunsag. is badly hit by typhoon Pablo in Davao del Norte and more than half of the P3.561 billion loss in agriculture covers vast banana plantations in Kapalong, there is definitely a currentmassive unemployment in the province,” speaking at the Kapehan sa PIA Friday, Tagalo said. He said an estimated 16,828 hectares planted to banana and rice were badly hit by typhoon Pablo. He also confirmed that with the huge agriculture damage, the banana industry which is the major industry in Davao del Norte is “down”. With the big damage Davao del Norte Provincial Governor Rodolfo del Rosario has given the province’s directly concerned officials to come with the exact total cost of damage of the typhoon not only in agriculture but including infrastructure and properties in order to determine how much share it could
get from the P8 billion to P10 billion calamity fund declared by the national government following typhoon Pablo. Tagalo said they (provincial officials) were given by the governor until January 15, to submit the final figures of the damage. Based on a report of the provincial government, Tagalo said infrastructure damage brought about by typhoon Pablo in Davao del Norte totaled to about P143,819,350 and funds needed for rehabilitation is about P240,822,946.00. In same report, total number of barangays affected in Davao del Norte reached 147; eight municipalities; and three cities. Number of families who evacuated posted 12,114; number of individuals who evacuated at 48,120; three injured; and one dead identified as 9-year-old Paul John Quezon of Purok 10, Villa Clementa Subdivision. Arlene Semblante, Davao del Norte Provincial Social Welfare Development Office chief said PSWDO has recommended about 43,360 as beneficiaries following typhoon Pablo. These are those with totally and partially damaged houses from about 11 municipalities. As of January 10, 2013, a total of P3,941,892.40 for food and other supplies was disbursed from Davao del Norte’s calamity fund. Semblante, said the amount represents 5 percent of the province’s calamity fund, she said. (PNA)

In Cotabato City, the victim’s son, Nilo Dulay, told a local radio station that he believes that politics was behind the slaying of his father. “Maybe those people who wanted to kill him are happy

from page 6 those who will be sent abroad, it nevertheless gives what appears to be a sure-fire protection. The question to ask is this: why is the book of Deuteronomy saying that the curse of sons and daughters being given to other nations will overtake many? The answer is, because people no longer listen to God and no longer obey Him. Consequently, if OFWs want to be spared from this curse, they should start listening to God (that is, reading His Bible) and obeying His commands all over again. -oooD R I V E VS . L O O S E FIREAMS IS OK: I agree with President Aquino that there should be an intensified campaign against loose firearms. In the first place, anyone owning a gun without a license---which gun is therefore legally considered a loose firearm---is not just violating the law on illegal possession of firearms. More importantly, this person, by his ownership of a loose firearm, confirms he has motives other than good in owning the unlicensed gun. -oooRP AS A RETIREMENT HAVEN: The Philippines could have been easily listed as the world’s top---number one---retirement haven for 2013, if only its peace and order situation had been better. I mean, the Philippines is indeed a paradise among many foreigners, considering our good beach resorts, our ultra-modern cities which can already compare with the best of the world. However, the whole world knows that for many foreigners, many cities here are danger zones, because of petty crimes. Something must be done about this. -oooJOB OPENINGS AT COAST GUARD: If you have taken maritime-related courses, or have mechanical, welding and electrical skills, and you are looking for a job, try to apply now with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). PCG Spokesman Commander Armand Balilo announced that the PCG is hiring 300 men and women this year, to man 10 new patrol boats which will start operations in 2014. -oooREACTIONS?
