Customs’ January collection up by 26%
THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) Collection District in Cagayan de Oro recorded an unprecedented surplus collection of P116 million in January 2013 as revenues swelled to P559.2 million, up 26 percent against’its assigned monthly collection target of P443.1 million. The district failed to meet its target in January 2012. Newly-installed District LAWYER Lourdes V. Mangaoang, the newly-installed port district collector for Northern Collector Atty. Lourdes Mindanao, explains to reporters how the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in Northern Mindanao Villamar Mangaoang for managed to collect P116 million––a record-breaking January collection––despite January is considered lean month. NEWLY-installed Customs District Collector for Northern Mindanao Atty. Lourdes V. Mangaoang yesterday vowed to intensify the agency’s anti-smuggling drive as she belied reports that “oil smuggling” exist in Cagayan de Oro City. Mangaoang said the secretary of finance has earlier ordered her to check the alleged oil smuggling in the city. But she said “oil smuggling” could not be the reason for the poor collection of the agency last year as it collected a whopping P116
million in January this year. She does not consider the allegation “serious” saying the agency collected P180 million from Jetti Oil. Aside from Jetti Oil, the BOC collected P84 million from Phoenix Petroleum, the third biggest importer smuggling | page 10

BUTUAN City - There is no stopping this administration from going full steam ahead as it makes good its promise to fill the classroom lack even before Aquino leaves office. The Department of Education in Caraga Region (DepEd-Caraga) is currently implementing the second phase of its large-scale classroom construction project through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) scheme called the PPP for School Infrastructure Project III (PSIP-II). During Tuesday’s first quarterly meeting of the Regional Development CouncilSocial Development Committee (RDC-SDC) held in one of the local convention halls here, Atty. Alberto Escobarte, DepEd-Caraga director pointed out that this project is one of their key programs to deliver the needed quality and accessible educational facilities for all learners. Escobarte added the PSIPII is implemented in several sites in 14 regions, including Caraga, under a “BuiltTransfer” scheme wherein the private sector is responsible for the design, construction, and financing of the project. “In turn, the government will make the payment to the proponent upon turnover of the completed school facilities,” Escobarte said. The official further said 708 classrooms will be constructed for Caraga in 314

THINK a minute. An airplane pilot came on the speaker system to the passengers: “This is your captain speaking. We’re flying at an altitude of 35,000 feet, and the speed of 600 miles an hour. I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is we’re lost. But the good news is we’re making great time.” There are many people who are making great time in life living in the fast lane. But they’re lost and going the wrong direction. Homosexuals are encouraged by many people just to come out of the closet and not be ashamed of who they are. Some people say that they didn’t choose to be homosexual; God made them that way. But the fact is that there has still not been one scientific study which can prove that homosexuals are
Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst born that way. In fact, it is just the opposite. All the research and studies have shown that homosexuals can make the choice. If people are born with any homosexual tendency at all, it is no different than any personality tendency like someone born with a bad temper. Do we say it’s OK for that person to lose control of his temper and murder people because he was born that way?
Of course not! He’s still free and able to choose not to kill people, even though he may have a naturally quick temper. In the same way, even if someone might have the slightest natural tendency toward homosexuality, he’s still free and able to choose not to become homosexual. If homosexuals were born that way and God made them with no choice, then why does He say homosexuality is so wrong and condemn it as sin? Throughout the whole Bible, God strongly
condemns homosexuality as sin which is opposed to the clearly natural, right way He created us humans to live and reproduce. Remember, God created us Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. Just like we are born free to choose whether or not we will be adulterers, murderers, thieves, liars, alcoholics and vicious gossips, we are also born free to choose whether or not we will become homosexual. But the good news is that even if you already have chosen to become a homosexual, Jesus will still forgive you and give you a new life if you sincerely ask Him to start changing your heart. So won’t you come out of the closet and into the light of Jesus forgiveness and truth, so He can start setting you free today? Just Think a Minute.
A politician, a family man
ONE of the most hated and yet most admired elected official in the local political circle is Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente ‘Dongkoy’ Emano. In my life, as a political enthusiast, I have not seen a public figure as a subject of irony and parody than ‘Dongkoy’ Emano. ‘Dongkoy’ has become an object of ridicule, of vilification, and hate campaign by political opponents in Cris Diaz various forms of medium. The social media networks of local political oppositions would be lackluster without Dongkoy as its main ingredient. It was, however, noticeable that inputs in anti-Dongkoy social media networks came from the same people. Two or three individuals carry out an antiDongkoy campaign in social media networks to create a semblance of popularity. Although I tried to think aloud hoping to find an answer, I could not justify my own thoughts on why political opponents hate ‘Dongkoy’ that much. Why political opponents hate Dongkoy could be usual in politics. However, one could not get logical answers that could justify hatred often laced with obsession. As we wandered into the recesses of people’s minds, we have not really known a few things why ‘Dongkoy’ Emano was a politician that blends with the season. The point was that Dongkoy has mastered his kind of politics that it would be impossible for any politician (opposition or not) to emulate. For instance, City Councilor ‘Pepe’ Abbu has nothing but praised on ‘Dongkoy.’ I talked to Abbu since he
was the only elected city councilor who served on the city council long before Dongkoy Emano became City Mayor. Abbu said that ‘Dongkoy’ was the best city mayor he has ever served. He said that ‘Dongkoy’ Emano was a man with a word of honour. Abbu said that Dongkoy was the only politician ‘I know who would always fulfil a promise.’ While Dongkoy has a soft-heart to people in distress, he hates the hypocrites and those who abuse their power. Contrary to claims of political opponents, Dongkoy ran the affairs of the city government with clean hands. Abbu said his loyalty to ‘Dongkoy’ Emano would be forever. ‘I am Dongkoy for life,’ he said. The man that political opponents hate was also a successful family man. Dongkoy has a lawyer, a doctor, and a successful politician-son cum heir apparent to his political throne. Unlike the siblings of other locally known politicians, Dongkoy’s sons and daughters lived a life of simplicity. Unassuming in their success and the influence that their father wields, Dongkoy’s children and grandchildren are low-profiled individuals. This was in contrast to the self-adulating characters of sons and daughters of politicians who bear the life affluence in high-heeled communities. Perhaps, being a successful politician and a family man makes ‘Dongkoy’ and an object of envy by politicians dreaming to duplicate his political exploits. In the meantime, Dongkoy’s political enemies could do nothing but concoct all kinds of potion to poison the minds of the electorates. In addition, that’s what makes Emano’s political career exciting and exhilarating. React: crisguardian@yahoo.com
Obedient, or rebellious 2013 candidates? LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you…” (Hebrews 13:17, the Holy Bible). -oooGOD AND BIBLE-HATER REACTS: Someone who has displayed a long-time animosity over the articles we have been writing here about God and the Bible in relation to current events, obviously because in his little mind there is no God and it is worthless reading the Bible, sent me another belligerent reaction on our item about examining candidates in the

Comelec’s problem READ the column of Dr. Antonio J. Montalvan II in yesterday’s issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer where he lengthily discussed the incident during the 2010 elections about the compact flash cards, elections returns and ballots that were found in a Cagayan de Oro dumpsite. Investigations by the police, the Comelec, the House of Representatives and even the supplier of the flash cards, Smartmatic, pointed to an anomaly attending the discovery of the questioned flash cards in a dumpsite. In the end, assurances were just made that the content of the discovered flash drives were already transmitted and tallied as part of the results of the elections held in May that year. It was further explained, perhaps to mitigate the im-

pact of the discovery of the flash cards in a dumpsite, that results of the election because of that incident only had a bearing in the local level but never in the national level for it will not have any significance in the overall results of the election nationally. The explanation given by everyone who looked into the incident may sound plausible but never acceptable. A single vote lost for not being counted or padded in favor of any candidate
taints the entire result of the election be it in the local or national levels. The electoral process stands or falls on the issue of integrity. When a question is raised assailing the integrity of any election result defeats the very purpose of the electoral process. But I am certain many would say that my position on the matter is too idealistic thus not anchored on the realities on the ground. It is precisely because of this
include names of recipients and areas for distribution, which the Department needs to submit to the Commission on Audit. It can be recalled that Secretary Soliman committed to release 10,000 sacks of rice to local government units affected by typhoon ‘Pablo’ in Region XI, after a group of victims had a stand-off and requested for an audience with the Secretary and the Provincial Government. During the dialogue in January, it was clear that rice will only be released once eight conditions were satisfied. These conditions include a distribution plan indicating the place and time of distribution and how the goods are to be distributed; the list indicating the name and address of recipients; listing of the names of responsible person who shall guarantee the safe distribution; distribution to be
witnessed by DSWD and Provincial/Municipal LGU representatives; release of rice to be done at the Typhoon Pablo Relief Operations Center at the DPWH Depot in Panacan, Davao City; acknowledgment that relief goods came from the government; distribution report consistent with the actual distribution; and storage of rice must follow safety standards. The DSWD in Region XI said that the sacks of rice are ready for pick-up from the Depot in Panacan anytime. Secretary Soliman explained that the DSWD is simply following the principles of transparency and accountability in setting the eight conditions. She further explained that rules set by the Commission on Audit necessitate the submission of a detailed distribution plan for validation and post-audit at a later date. (DSWD)

DSWD urges Typhoon ‘Pablo’ victims to meet all conditions to claim rice
SOCIAL Welfare and Development Secretary Dinky Soliman called on Barug Katawhan to submit the agreed upon documents which they said they will provide. The Department continues to provide food packs to all areas affected by Typhoon Pablo. It also had begun the early recovery schemes including cash for work. Secretary Soliman made this appeal after learning that the victims who earlier protested and demanded for additional rice assistance in January staged a press conference today. The protesters said that their claim to the 10,000 sacks of rice was rejected by the DSWD. According to DSWD Region XI Director Priscilla Razon, the leaders of the protesters went to the regional office yesterday, and submitted only a distribution plan mentioning the site for the repacking of goods. The plan does not

Kia unveils imaginative designs with new Cross GT Concept CUV and SupermanInspired Kia Optima at Chicago Auto Show Blurring the line between Kia’s gorgeous GT concept and a luxury CUV, Kia Motors America (KMA) slipped the silk off the beautiful Cross GT concept at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show. Amid the popping strobes of cameras, the Cross GT stunned onlookers with its elegant yet powerful stance, confirming once again Kia’s now-well-established reputation for world-class design. The Cross GT seamlessly melds high technology with nature, creating a harmonious partnership between driver and vehicle that also respects our global environment. Purely conceptual, the Cross GT reveals Kia’s intentions to potentially offer a larger premium CUV than the current Sorento. “The debut of the GT in 2011 heralded a new frontier for Kia, both from a design and a business perspective,” noted Peter Schreyer, Kia Motors Corporation president and global chief of design. “It beautifully illustrated to the world that the brand was ready to explore the possibility of perhaps one day offer-
ing a full-size rear-drive luxury saloon. The Cross GT, with its raised stance and large cargo area, allows us to envision the GT in the form of a full-size luxury crossover.” While the GT’s lines were penned in Frankfurt, Germany, the Cross GT hails from Kia Design Center America (KDCA) in Irvine, Calif., the house that breathed life into the Track’ster, KV7 and Soul’ster concepts, and most recently the all-new production 2014 Forte sedan. Based on the GT chassis, the Cross GT’s proportions are similar to its rear-drive stablemate with short overhangs, a long wheelbase and an aggressively wide posture. But the Cross GT offers even greater visibility thanks to its taller stature and features all-wheel drive for improved performance and all-weather capability. Drawing inspiration from nature, driven by technology and bathed in gorgeous Fusion Copper, the Cross GT is powered by an efficient hybrid powertrain that looks to reduce the vehicle’s carbon footprint
while providing the uncompromising performance that’s expected of a large, luxury crossover. Utilizing a state-of-the-art 3.8-liter V6 hybrid, 8-speed automatic and torquevectoring all-wheel-drive, the Cross-GT’s powertrain matches the sophistication of the exterior and interior designs. Backing the V6 is an evolution of Kia’s parallel hybrid system, a pancake-shaped electric motor sandwiched between the V6 and transmission. The electric motor is neatly packaged under the rear floor. Combined, the V6 and electric motor produce 500 lb.-ft. of torque and 400 horsepower, with an all-electric range of 20-miles - sufficient to enable exhilarating performance, while delivering superior fuel economy and fuel efficiency. While strictly a concept powertrain, Kia’s proven hybrid technology, combined with all-wheel drive are thought-provoking ideas that may one day find their way into a production vehicle. While clearly a member
of the same bloodline as the award-winning Sorento, the Cross GT cuts an even more imposing figure. At 122.0 inches, the Cross GT’s wheelbase is longer than Sorento’s by 15.7 inches, and its overall length of 192.8 inches is 8.4 inches
greater than Sorento. The 79.1-inch width is 4.9 inches wider than Sorento, but the Cross GT’s overall height of 65.3 inches is actually 1.6 inches shorter, giving the concept a lower roofline than most large CUVs. The Cross GT is
designed to easily accommodate four passengers and their cargo in luxurious surroundings, but the large greenhouse, airy cabin and gently sloping hood give the Cross GT a nimble feel that’s at home in crowded urban environments.
At the fund raising dinner last night for the senatorial run of Teddy Casiño, the progressive lawmaker sold 'Teddy Cares' bears to raise funds for his TV and radio advertisements. The small, blue-colored bears carry a heart with the words "Teddy Cares." Casiño and his campaigners are selling the cuddly teddy bears at P200 each. The bears are locally made by a small garments manufacturer, in keeping with Casiño's advocacy for local manufacturing. “Sa totoo lang, our biggest challenge is raising millions for TV and radio ads. This is one of the toughest hurdles an alternative candidate has to overcome so that he can reach millions of voters,” said Casiño. He lamented that even as he was desperate for funds for his ads scheduled to air during the campaign period, the Liberal Party is frontloading its ads to circumvent the COMELEC limits on TV and radio ads. "Ayon sa aming reliable source, ang budget ng Liberal Party ay P50 million para lang sa ad campaign bago magsimula ang official campaign period. Sinasamatala ng administrasyong Aquino na di pa kasama sa bilang ng COMELEC ang kanilang mga ads, pero sigurado naman na lalagpas ito sa oras na itinadhana ng batas at sa gastos na dapat ilaan sa mga botante na P3 lamang kada isa,” the Makabayan senatorial bet said. “We have it from reliable sources that from January 9-21, the LP has allotted P25 million for their broadcast ads and another P25 million for the weeks before the February 12 official start of the campaign period. That is the reason behind the bombardment of political ads of the Liberal Party
these past weeks,” the solon explained. "It is highly disappointing that the one blatantly circumventing the limits on paid political ads is Pres. Aquino himself through his massive radio and TV ads for his Liberal Party bets. Sa loob ng dalawang linggo ay tuloy-tuloy at sustenido ang pagiging malaking epal ng Pangulo na lantarang nangangampanya para sa kanyang mga kandidato. The President should set the example of daang matuwid at di ng pangugulang,” Casiño said. "It is heart warming to
note though that there are a lot of people willing to help my campaign - from fellow lawmakers, local government officials, friends, family and many common folk. They are going out of their way to support me and the causes I represent,” he added. "We are counting on the support of everyone, from the poor who have volunteered to campaign for free to the moneyed people who have committed their resources to bring change to the Senate, which is an elite club and worse, a dynastic house," he added.

Improved peace and order in Dipolog hailed
DIPOLOG CITY – Former Dipolog City mayor Roberto Uy who is aspiring for governor of Zamboanga del Norte, said that the peace and order situation in Dipolog City has vastly improved as the city government has been providing material, fuel and financial support to the law enforcement agencies. The logistical support leading to the improvement of the peace and order situation here ensures that local businesses and the people are properly protected, Mayor Uy said. Uy also is proud that in 1998, Dipolog City received the International Award on Drugs Enforcement for having arrested the most
number of drug pushers. He said that based on a survey conducted by the University of the Philippines (UP), the Ateneo de Manila University and the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), Dipolog has been noted as one of the top 7 most progressive cities in the country. Mayor Uy says that the Filipino people have trust and confidence on President Aquino and that peacer and development has been assured by no less than the President himself. He urged the people to observe maximum tolerance as he called on them to pray that peace will reign and that the forthcoming elections will be honest, orderly and peaceful. He assured the people that the police force in all the towns, both regional and provincial, is ready to respond to emergencies ,and that all the lw enforcement agencies in the area are ready to provide the protection. schoolchildren. EHCP as a school-based program of DepEd gains the support of local officials from the province led by governor Emmylou Mendoza, the provincial health office and DepEd Cotabato division. It aims to reduce childrelated diseases such as diarrhea, respiratory infections, worm infections, tooth decay and others, which causes absenteeism of some schoolchildren. In her message at the distribution rites, Governor Mendoza said that children in Cotabato Province are the next potential leaders and to be such they have to be physically and mentally active and be healthy all the time. She urged school administrators and district supervisors in the province to see to it that the hygiene kits be used immediately by the children. Mendoza also reminded the children that their toothbrush must not be shared as this transmits mouth infectious diseases. (aida c. agad PIA12/asf )

Meanwhile, local officials wanted to preserve Lolong’s remains as museum-like tourist attraction as legacy to maintain the worldwide popularity of the reptile’s Guiness record and allow more animal conservationists to do their research work. A report by Dr. Alexander Collantes, animal doctor of Davao Crocodile Park, showed the small pieces of plastic fishing line were found with the abnormal color of Lolong feces during his waste discharges since December last year which could have disturbed the normal flow of his digestive system. Collantes however explained these were just his initial findings and further examination will be conducted by experts from Protected Areas Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) in Palawan to determine through necropsy the real cause of his sudden death. Mayor Edwin Elorde of Bunawan, Agusan del Sur said Lolong’s death caught them with a big surprise since PAWB veterinarians regularly visiting Lolong’s artificial habitat at the eco-park in Consuelo village found there was no irregularity of his health and physical appearance except from the change in the color of feces. Teary-eyed in his opening press statement before journalists yesterday at the media briefing, Elorde said they have done everything to save Lolong yet they could not blame anybody for his untimely death. Expert studies showed that Lolong is already about 60-year-old and could live 20 more years longer based

Collantes however admitted that when Lolong’s right belly started to bulge late last month could be the start of his abnormal condition on his digestive system and vital signs were observed to have deteriorated a few days before his death. Elorde said local officials have agreed to continue Lolong’s legacy that made their town a popular global tourist destination by preserving his remains in a museum for other enthusiasts and researchers still witness the magnificent size of the reptile, measured at 20.4foot (6.12 meter), already declared as the largest in Guinness book of world records. The local government has earmarked funds to develop the eco-tourism park in the upland village of Consuelo into replica of mini-Agusan Marshland especially that the Department of Tourism has already released P46 million concreting of the two-kilometer road from the national highway. He admitted there could be a lesser impact to attraction with just Lolong’s remains just on display than during his being alive in captivity for one year and four months. The reptile was captured by hunters at the Agusan Marsh in the village of Nueva Era on Sept. 3, 2011. While still alive, Lolong had been drawing eager local and foreign tourists daily, generating up to P20,000 of gate receipts daily. The mayor has put aside capturing another crocodile said to be bigger than Lolong after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources declared a moratorium on the hunting of reptiles in the wide Agusan Marsh. Asked why the local government did not heed calls by environmentalist group to return Lolong to his natural habitat late last year, Elorde said the reptile could pose danger to the lives of residents living along Agusan Marsh especially during rainy season when they can roam freely because of overflowing floodwaters.

last month’s collection performance was P248.7 million or 80 percent higher than the revenues generated during the same period last year. January is normally a lean month for Customs and most ports usually fail to meet targets for this month. “This welcome spike in revenues,” added Mangaoang, “inspires confidence that our district is on track to meet our 2013 collection target of nearly P5.65 billion. The Mindanao Container Terminal-Subport (MCT-SP) in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, one of the three subports under
the jurisdiction of Mangaoang, was the best revenue earner with income totaling P494,727,304. The subport of lligan in Lanao del Norte contributed P17,488,465. The subport of Ozamis in Misamis Occidental contributed P1,212,221, while the main port of Cagayan de Oro accounted for duties and taxes in the amount of P45,777.221. A containerized port, MCT-SP services the logistical requirements of big corporations like Nestle Philippines and oil industry players Jetti and Phoenix Petroleum. MCT-SP is headed by Atty. Javier C. Alpano. This is Mangaoang’s second time as Customs Regional Director of Region 10. She was district collector from January 2003 to May 2005. Prior to Atty Mangaoang’s assumption in office in 2003, the Cagayan de Oro Collection District was not meeting its collection target for 10 years. In 2003, the National Steel Corporation stopped operations and about P600 million in expected revenues were lost. Despite NSC’s closure and the decrease in the volume of importation by 35%, the revenues grew by 25%. In 2003, the Cagayan de Oro Collection District made a turn-around and became a billionaire port. It was given the Best Collection District Award in 2003.

The BOC in Northern Mindanao can now easily detect contrabands as it has “x-ray machine” to check contents of big vans. “We will not allow smuggling of agri products especially vegetables to protect our local producers,” said Mangaoang adding, “it is my primary duty not to allow any form of smuggling.”

good officials. If they do not know the Word of God, and do not obey the Word, they are bound to be useless and inefficient. Today, let us look at Romans 13:1-2 of the Holy Bible and see if there are candidates who comply with its mandate, or who disobey what it has decreed. This Biblical verse talks about obedience to governing authorities and officials, and rebellion against these authorities. It says: “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.” -oooGOD’S PUNISHMENT AGAINST REBELS: Now, what does this verse mean? It simply means that the Bible wants all of us to subject ourselves to officials and authorities. Subjecting ourselves to these officials does not simply mean obeying them, but, rather, refusing to fight them or, as the Bible itself says, refusing to rebel against them, even if we think they are no longer fit to remain as our rulers or officers. There is one important reason for this rule: the rulers, whether they be good or bad, have been put there by God Himself. God has a reason for establishing these people as our leaders and rulers. We may be unable to understand God’s reason or purpose for these bad leaders, but what He wants us to do is to subject ourselves to them just the same, and faithfully obey them. What is significant here is that God considers this rule quite important, so that He even imposed a punishment for those who will rebel against their rulers and officials. Now, the question that voters should ask our candidates is this: have you obeyed our rulers at all times, or have you rebelled against them, and therefore violated God’s law? -oooREACTIONS? attitude that the country’s electoral process had become a big joke, had been prostituted. I read somewhere in the internet a former presidential assistant publicly announcing that one of the four basic phases of every election is pinalitay sa boto or vote buying. Now if a former presidential assistant has this kind of thinking toward the electoral process, a thinking that has become the rule rather than the exception come election time thus shared by almost everyone, then we are indeed in for another mockery of the electoral process come May 13. If we look, even if ideally only, at the electoral process as an exercise where integrity should at all times, at all facets of the entire process, is a must to make its results credible, then we should collectively do something to change the outlook of everyone toward the electoral process especially the vulnerable sector of our society. But what is saddening about our situation is that while everyone recognizes the problem, no one likes to initiate any action, and this includes the church and even the academe, two important institutions in our society, to correct or even just remedy the situation. What we need is an enlightened and empowered populace who participates in the electoral process not only during election day by casting their votes but even during the process of determining who ought to be running for any public office. The Visayans have a very appropriate word in its vocabulary in describing the candidacy of any politician. Visayans describe the candidacy of anyone as paglansar coming from the root word lansad. What is the history of this? In olden times, the candidacy of any politician is endorsed by the people who are the ones responsible sa paglansad of every candidacy. But nowadays, politicians do not wait for the people’s collective act sa paglansad of their candidacy. It is the politician now who does the act of paglansad sa iyang kandidatura. Why? It is because service and being a servant are no longer the underlying motives why politicians seek public office. Service and becoming a servant are viewed as mere lip service instead of being the primary consideration in seeking for an elective office now. Since the people no longer play a role in egging a politician to seek a public office, today’s candidates resort to vote buying because their candidacy is not of the people, by the people and for the people. And since large amounts of money, personal or contributions, are spent in securing a public office,
elective officials logically earn back what they have spent by using the power of their positions. Here lies the logic of present-day corruption in government. Incumbent politicians not only recoup what they have spent, they also raise money for all the doles they give out to their constituency for kasal, lubong, bunyag and other events and occasions and to make pondo to ensure they have the needed funds for their reelection or election of their successor who in all likelihood is the wife or any of the children. We still wonder why the country’s electoral process had been corrupted beyond redemption not just by the politicians but almost by everyone. (Reaction at jelbacon@ yahoo.com)

52 ARTISTS: ONE STAGE, ONE GOAL
T
wo years ago, international Filipino pianist Rudolf Golez collaborated with the Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) during the birth centenary of the co-foundress of Liceo de Cagayan University, Madame Elsa P. Pelaez. The enthusiastic crowd was mesmerized by the performances of almost forty musicians. This was a feat never before seen in quite a time in the Cagayan performance and entertainment scene. Rodelsa Hall is bound to surpass the record this year. This will be the first time in the history of concert venue Rodelsa Hall that 52 classical musicians will perform in one stage for a one night special benefit concert for Safer River Life Saver Foundation, the flagship community service unit of Liceo de Cagayan University that is taking care of the 17 riverside barangays along Cagayan de Oro River. This coming February 16, at 7:30 in the evening, the Cebu Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) will join the wind instrumentalists from the Unites the World Project Orchestra of Japan (UUU) in assisting international Filipino pianist Rudolf Pelaez Golez who will perform as soloist. Well-loved classical pieces will be rendered for the local music lovers such as the overture of the Barber of Seville, Rachmaninoff piano concerto no. 2 and the Radetzky March. The concert is under the baton of Prof. Reynaldo Abellana. To know more about the concert and to book your seats, please feel free to call the Liceo Office of Cultural Affairs at (088) 8584093 to 95 local 109 or call/text: 09176366528(Globe). You may also visit them at the second floor of the South Wing of Rodelsa Hall, Rodolfo N. Pelaez Boulevard, Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City. See you at Rodelsa Hall!
