Wanted Feature: person nabbed Diabetes 101 in a riot
Diabetes mellitus is a lifestyle-related disease characterized by high blood sugar levels. A high blood sugar level is caused by the inability of the body to produce sufficient amounts of insulin, the hormone which keeps blood sugar at a normal level. The two types of diabetes are the insulin dependent or Type I and the non-insulin dependent or Type II. Type I diabetes is common in children and young adults. Type I diabetes is a condition where the body cannot produce insulin, hence it has to be injected by the diabetics. Type II diabetes, however is the most common form and is usually called adult-onset diabetes. In Type II diabetes, the pancreas is not producing enough insulin needed by the body. Risk factors for having diabetes include family history, high blood pressure, old age, sedentary lifestyle and overweight or obesity. Many stu d i e s h ave shown that obesity is the number one predictor in the development of Type II diabetes. Similarly, it has been shown that people who are 45 years old and above are more at-risk to Type II diabetes. Diabetes is the 8th leading cause of death among Filipino adults, based on the Department of HealthField (DOH) Health Service Information System in 2009. In addition, according to the 7th National Nutrition Survey (NNS) conducted by Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI-DOST) in 2008, the prevalence of diabetes among Filipinos based on high fasting blood glucose
(FBS) was 4.8 percent (%). High fasting blood glucose (FBS) therefore increased 3.4% in 2003, although it increased was insignificant. On the other hand, the prevalence of high FBS among adults peaked at age 50-69 years old, proving that people who are 45 years old and over are more at-risk to diabetes. Diabetes is a serious illness that when neglected results to complications like kidney and heart diseases, blindness and nerve damages, among others. There is no cure for diabetes yet, so one should carefully manage it through proper diet and healthy lifestyle. The FNRI-DOST developed the Nutritional Handbook for Persons with Diabetes to help in the nutritional management of the disease. The handbook gives correct and accurate information about the diabetes, as it is identified therein that education is the fourth foundation of its medical therapy. The other therapies involve diet, exercise and medication. This handbook is not only helpful to diabetics but also to family members who can help in managing the disease. There is no specific diabetic diet recommended by the handbook, as the diet depends on the patient’s body size, physical activity, laboratory results and medications. Indiv idu a lize d diet counselling is needed to ensure that the patient receives the right nutrition information. Diabetics are encouraged to practice healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly to burn body sugar quickly and
avoiding alcoholic beverages to avoid excess calories and health hazards that contribute to any complications of the disease. Other handbooks developed by FNRI-DOST are on managing cancer, heart and cardiovascular diseases, among other publications available that serve as guides and tools in the nutritional management of diseases. The FNRI-DOST is true to its commitment of improving of the nutritional status of the Filipino people by providing nutritional guides and tools to educate and the general public. Think a minute…You know that a brand new computer today will be outdated and old in just a few months. I recently replaced my 7-year old computer when my friends told me I was using a horse to race against rockets. To compete and succeed in this world we have to keep up with the technology, which means continually upgrading our computer. Yet none of these impressive inventions comes even close to the power of the human mind. In fact, our mind’s computer already has all the upgrades we’ll ever need. So since we’re the ones who control the world’s most powerful computer, we must keep learning and upgrading it every day. Someone said: “Your mind is like a parachute—it’s not much good unless it’s open.” And if we
Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst want to change our life, we have to change our mind first. Computers, however, can also be dangerous. That’s why we need an anti-virus program to protect our computer from viruses that can infect and damage it. These protective programs even update themselves regularly against new viruses that can attack. So since we go to all that trouble for a machine that’s so quickly outdated and useless, how much more important is it
to protect the computer of our own mind! Everyday we face dangerous, deadly viruses like pornography and sex outside of marriage, temptations to lie or steal, commit suicide, gossip, lose our temper, and other kinds of wrong thinking that can ruin our character, our marriage and children, our job, our whole life. That’s why we’ve got to be careful what we allow to come into our mind. “Garbage in, garbage out.” So every day, we need a
good brain-washing. And no one’s more qualified to keep our mind clean than God our Maker. That’s why He gave us the Bible as our manual for life, to show us how to maintain and keep improving our mind. The Bible is your own anti-virus program to protect your mind from wrong thinking that can destroy you. You see, God knows that the person who doesn’t control his thoughts will lose control of his life. So why don’t you decide to spend some time every day reading your Bible and talking with God? Get involved in a Bible-teaching church. It will raise your level of thinking and living, and protect you from all the dangerous viruses that threaten your mind every day. Just Think a Minute…
Of political motives and campaign slogans JUST as the observance of the Holy Week culminated, the political fireworks also exploded. The 45-day official campaign period for local bets in the midterm elections this year has just started. What gives? Candidates would start courting the general electorates. Just like wooing a woman, a candidate would employ everything, mostly imagined, to convince a voter’s support. Conse- Cris Diaz quently, the electors should examine every candidate’s record of accomplishments in private or public life. It is of note that there were candidates who, in the past, had the chance to serve the public. Whether these candidates were able to meet the expectations of the electorates, are good subjects of debate. Arguments could provide a good standard to measure the election of the right candidate. After all, in a democratic country, an exchange of healthy ideas is an indispensable requisite to make sound decisions. Aside from record of accomplishment, sincerity and the capability to serve are important elements in choosing a candidate. On the other hand, there are candidates who present themselves with Messianic visions. These candidates want to make it appear that they could make changes by making promises that others already accomplished. There are candidates who bragged their accomplishments in an effort to cover up their misdeeds. There are candidates who think they could fool the people around with their antics. Worse, there were candidates who miserably failed and accomplished nothing when
got elected before. Motive, however, is an important factor that an electorate should consider in electing a candidate. An appropriate subject matter was about a governor who wants to run for mayor in Cagayan de Oro City. Gov. Oscar Moreno of Misamis Oriental wants to change the image of Cagayan de Oro City. Moreno, however, has forgotten that the incumbent City Mayor Vicente Emano has already accomplished all that he wants to change in the city. Candidly speaking, Moreno’s “new Cagayan de Oro” campaign slogan is a hyperbole that offends the sensitivity of the Cagayanons. The campaign slogan was in contrast to what Moreno should have accomplished in the province of Misamis Oriental. For instance, Moreno could offer nothing but flimsy arguments on his unsettled cash advances of almost P200 million during his stint as provincial governor. Thus, it is usual for people to doubt about Moreno’s intention to run for mayor in Cagayan de Oro. There is so much money in Cagayan de Oro City, they said. Perhaps, being a city mayor would give Moreno the advantage to “cash advance” billions without being bothered of clearing himself. People are afraid that Moreno would bring changes in Cagayan de Oro City just as he let thousands of lowly provincial workers suffer for not releasing their salaries and bonuses even on Christmas. The people of Cagayan de Oro believed that Moreno’s envisioned changes for Cagayan de Oro City would be a horrible nightmare. The changes that would do more harm than good for the city of Cagayan de Oro and its people. React: crisguardian@yahoo.com

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription. `This is the inscription that was written: mene, mene, tekel, parsin…” (Daniel 5:25, the Holy Bible). -oooCOMELEC DRIVE USELESS: If the Commission on Elections will be sincere in its drive against candidates who have put up posters and other campaign materials in places not designated as poster areas, no one will be left to run in the May 2013 elections. But then, that is the reality of the Comelec---it is downright inutile and useless in running after election violators, except perhaps the political opponents of
Kakampi mo ang batas Atty. obeys His Word, the Bible, only the foreigners in the land will get richer while the natives go poorer. Read this in Deuteronomy 28:15 and 42-43 of the Bible. -oooHOTTEST DAY IS YET TO COME: Make no mistake about it, the hottest day in the Philippines is yet to come, even if almost all of the country is now sweltering in oppressive
heat during the last few days. And yes, we can blame global warming and climate change as the reasons for this phenomenon, and that maybe correct. But, what do we blame for the global warming and climate change? Destruction of the environment? Again, this maybe true, but what do we blame for the destruction of the environment? Wanton logging and wanton disregard of the earth’s natural resources? But then, what do we blame for the logging and disregard of our natural resources? bigger problem. I have learned early on as a parent to three beautiful girls, that, a change in behaviour like if one used to be bubbly and talkative, and suddenly becomes reserved and would prefer to be alone, or when the scholastic record shows a downward trend, that something must be bothering my child. It i s w h e n w e a r e sensitive to these changes in our young and even with our adult members of the family that we become more vigilant and watchful. R e m e mb e r, s u i c i d e i s preventable. It is a known fact, that people used to shy away from seeking professional help. A stigma of being mentally deranged is attached to an individual, if one were to see our Psychiatrist friends. But, believe me, they are the best specialists to handle cases like this. Counselling, medications, and even a temporary admission may help save a life. But more than this, is, the show of love, support and unconditional acceptance will send the signal that WE CARE! The compassion and even that little time spent listening and empathizing can go a long way to save that precious life. In the hustle and bustle of our lives, a second or minute spent to listen, to care and share, can at times spell the difference between life and death. But more than life itself is, the influence we leave behind can be a legacy that can be played forward...

Traversing the Tourism Hi-way Ped T. Quiamjot Politics in our country caused animosity between friends and political foes. Sibl i ng s and rel at ive s contesting juicy elected positions in the government would even face and tear each other apart. Former political allies who are now contesting the Mayoralty race in Manila are seen on national television flexing their muscles with teeth rattling in any moment both personalities may just explode and maimed each other in public? M a n y o t h e r confrontations all over the country are in familiar situation when uncontrolled emotions shatters peaceful debates and exchange of ideas so the electorate may know their worth and platform of governance? Politics in the Philippines is no fun. In 1985, the youngest Governor of the Province of Antique, Evelio Javier was felled by a hail of M-16 bullets while overseeing the election results of the his province whose votes went to his favored candidate Cory Aquino against the incumbent President Ferdinand Marcos. The henchmen of the other side could not have accepted defeat because they were the party in power. In politics, it could be dirty and dangerous. How many political assassinations or election related violence may happen when the heat is on as the local campaign period starts next month? We have the peculiarity to make a head count and tally the fatalities as if life among the contesting parties and their supporters are valued like dressed chicken in the market.
We sto op e d s o low and disregard dignity and respect for human lives when political leaders resort to violence and dirty tactics to win an election. How many is contemplating of doing so? The stakes are of course h i g h i n e ve r y el e c te d position in the government. The price of power is the source of money and authority which becomes a license to accumulate wealth and built political dynasties. Once they are there, there is no turning back until their dreams could turn dust to gold that they cannot bring to their graves. Why do we wallow in this quagmire that has entangled political leadership in this countr y only to a few families in succession? The problem of course lies among our leaders. A constitutional prohibition on political dynasties is enshrined in the 1987 Constitution. But after five elected Presidents and the 15th Congress, it has outlived the fundamental laws of this land, no one dared and nobody ever sponsored a law prohibiting political dynasties because it cannot be approved in a dynasty filled Congress, anyway! The ides of March in Rome happened in the 4th century for the simple reason that the Romans do not want to be ruled by an Empire. Can it happen again on the political exercise of May 13, 2013, to bring finish to the empire and dynasties which multiplied and overstayed in Philippine politics? It can only be done with more luck and intelligent issues that must be understood by the electorate.

problem. Rep. Climaco has also enjoined all stakeholders to contribute to the resolution of the power shortage as she stressed that solutions “should be clearly calculated and well-thought of.” Saying that Zamboanga City is at the tail end of power distribution; Climaco said that strict implementation of extraction is needed. For instance, she said in terms of supply, the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (ZAMCELCO) should contract enough electricity to satisfy its total demand. “Government officials and the rest of the citizenry should check on how ZAMCELCO is being run and ensure that it has contracted enough power.” On the part of the business sector, she urged it to cooperate and help ZAMCELCO implement the Interruptible Load Program (ILP). The ILP is a demand-side management scheme, which provides payment to participating power consumers who enter a contract with ZAMCELCO for the voluntary interruption or reduction of the power supply given to them during peak period or during emergency conditions. She also urged the industrial sector and Chamber of Commerce to explore the time of use program by shifting their operations to off-peak periods. According to Climaco, the most concrete action that can be done is for Zamboanga City to institute its own energy conservation program. “ZAMCELCO and other stakeholders can do an information campaign to encourage consumers to conserve energy by encouraging the use of electric fans instead of aircons. Large consumers can institute energy saving programs by minimizing the use of air-conditioning and using only energy efficient bulbs,” she said. “The local government unit (LGU) can lead by example. Participate in ILP and energy conservation. We should also tap renewables, solar bulbs, solar panels, and garbage-to-energy technology,” Climaco said. Climaco reiterated her proposals during the recent Zamboanga Power Forum, which was attended by Energy Secretary Carlos Petilla and Mindanao Development Authority (MINDA) Chairperson Secretary Luwalhati Antonino and other representatives from agencies under the Cabinet energy cluster. Zamboanga City has been experiencing seven to eight hours rotational blackout daily because of the power curtailment in Mindanao brought about by the reduced water level in Lake Lanao, which is the source of hydropower. March, the power demand of Zamboanga City is 79.821MW but the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (Psalm) and the Therma Marine Inc. (TMI) could only provide a combined power of 54-MW, bringing the shortage to over 24-MW which translates to at least seven to eight hours blackout daily. The Energy Regulatory Commission earlier said if the government decides to purchase generator sets or gensets to augment the current insufficient power supply, distribution utilities and cooperatives will have to file a petition to recover the cost of generators. At present, Mindanao has a power shortfall of 294 megawatts, as the demand stands at 1,157 MW versus the actual supply of only 863 MW. The government reportedly has allotted P3.8 billion for the country’s power capabilities. It includes an amount for the rehabilitation of existing hydroelectric power plants in the south. Aside from DLPC, he said they were also considering possible additional augmentation from the Cagayan Electric Power and Light Company, Inc., which serves the city of Cagayan de Oro and parts of Misamis Oriental province. “This is more of an appeal to our big brothers in the power industry for help since they currently have surplus capacity. They’re also more experienced and have more resources to effectively address this kind of problem,” Ocat said. The electric cooperative is presently implementing two sets of daily rotating brownouts lasting seven hours each or a total of 14 hours daily due to the power shortage, which was mainly attributed to the declining generation capacity of the National Power Corporation’s (NPC) hydroelectric plants in Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte. Socoteco II, which has a daily average peak power demand of 112 MW, serves this city, the entire Sarangani Province and the municipalities of Tupi and Polomolok in South Cotabato. Socoteco II’s technical services department noted that the area’s total deficit is presently at 33 MW as the NPC only managed to supply 49 MW to the area this week. TMI augments the area’s power supplies by 30 MW based on a power sales

said. Along with political dynasties, the bishop noted as among the “stones” the Reproductive Health Law, ongoing killings, “unabated suffering of the poor,” especially President Benigno Aquino III’s recent vetoing of the Magna Carta for the Poor, the electoral process of 4Ps (patronage, personality, power and popularity), and the ongoing ecological destructions. Cabantan cited “Proclaim the Message, In Season and Out of Season,” a pastoral letter by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, which mentioned the stones as storms “that we all hope will be silenced by the Risen Lord.” The bishop lamented that instead of being the art of government and public service, politics in the country had sadly “degenerated into an arena where the interests of the powerful and rich few are pitted against those of the weak and poor many.” The Constitution, he added, describes public office as a public trust meant for the good of civil society at large. But Cabantan stressed that many politicians look at it as “a means of enrichment and a source of influence and power for self and family enlargement.” “It hence easily becomes considered and actually treated as some sort of private property to be passed on from one generation to another in the manner of a feudal title—the perpetuation of power that is at the base of so-called “family dynasties,” he said, citing the CBCP Pastoral Exhortation on Politics in 1997. Cabantan said the most basic pastoral action needed to stop political dynasties is “conversion to new values,” adding this should be the aim of political teachings. Political dynasties have thrived in the Philippines for decades despite a constitutional provision against it. The 1987 Constitution of the Philippines, particularly Article 2 (Declaration of principle and state policies), Section 26 states “the State shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law.” There have been sev-
Grace Poe capitalizing on FPJ to the hilt DAVAO CITY– What is there to boast? This is the question posed by voters whether Grace Poe-Llamanzares would be as popular as her stepfather or not at all, but she is obviously riding on the popularity of the late action king Fernando Poe Jr., to push thru with her ambition to be one of the 12 senators come the next Congress. To begin with, Grace Poe dropped her husband’s surname “Llamanzares” in her campaign propaganda apparently to have a name recall that she hopes to transform into votes since her father is very popular among the Masang Pilipino, according to political analysts. She knows very well, and others would definitely agree, that she cannot make it to the Senate without using “Poe” as her campaign
name. By doing so, Grace Poe is deceiving the Masang Pilipino, who her stepfather loves so well. Analysts said the only thing that she can “boast” about was being chairman of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. In other words, Grace Poe lacks the experience needed to become senator of the land just like Nancy Binay, daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay, who like Poe, is also eyeing a seat in the Senate. Grace Poe became active in politics after she joined several protest rallies in various parts of the country soon after FPJ’s death in 2004 and the eventual discovery of massive cheating purportedly orchestrated by FPJ’s closest political rival, the former President Gloria Arroyo.
Political analysts said it was evident that Grace Poe joined in the organization of Kontra-Daya, a coalition of civil society groups opposed to the 2010 electoral fraud, for her own personal gains, and that is to seek a seat in the Senate come 2013. “She is a nobody. Even her credentials show that she is unfit to become a senator. What does she know about being a senator when she had not even experienced to become at least a municipal councillor or even a barangay kagawad?” one observer asked. “The voting populace should think not once, not twice but a million times before they consider her to the senate. Sayang ang boto natin sa kanya (Grace Poe). We better give our vote to other deserving candidates. God save the Philippines if she should win,” he said. (Mindanao Examiner)
eral proposed measures to provide teeth on the constitutional provision but Congress had failed to pass it into law. The list includes Senate Bill (SB) 2649 or the Anti-Political Dynasty Act of 2011, SB 1317 in 2004, and SB 1468 and House Bill 2493, both in 2007. Cabantan, along with Fr. Biven Belderol, chair of the diocesan commission on good governance, facilitated earlier this month an orientation on lay people’s discernment in choosing candidates running in the May 13, 2013 local and national elections. Belderol told diocesan priests in a meeting in January that vote buying, too, is among the biggest problems faced by the movement for good governance. The campaign period for the local elections officially started on March 30, Black Saturday. (Walter I. Balane/ MindaNews)
sion on Elections will be sincere in its drive against candidates who have put up posters and other campaign materials in places not designated as poster areas, no one will be left to run in the May 2013 elections. But then, that is the reality of the Comelec---it is downright inutile and useless in running after election violators, except perhaps the political opponents of their patrons. -oooRICH GETTING RICHER IN RP, FORETOLD BY THE BIBLE: The claim that only the rich are being benefitted by the economic successes of the Aquino administration, leaving out the greater mass of the Filipino poor, is a mere re-statement of the Biblical truth that, when a nation no longer listens to God and no longer obeys His Word, the Bible, only the foreigners in the land will get richer while the natives go poorer. Read this in Deuteronomy 28:15 and 42-43 of the Bible. -oooHOTTEST DAY IS YET TO COME: Make no mistake about it, the hottest day in the Philippines is yet to come, even if almost all of the country is now sweltering in oppressive heat during the last few days. And yes, we can blame global warming and climate change as the reasons
for this phenomenon, and that maybe correct. But, what do we blame for the global warming and climate change? Destruction of the environment? Again, this maybe true, but what do we blame for the destruction of the environment? Wanton logging and wanton disregard of the earth’s natural resources? But then, what do we blame for the logging and disregard of our natural resources? I mean, I can go on and on, and lay the blame on almost anything for the weather aberration we are now certainly in and are likely to suffer from. But did you know that in Deuteronomy 28:15 and 22-23, the twin curses of global warming and climate change were already prophesied to happen, and were prophesied to cause death and destruction in the whole world, as they are happening now? And did you also know that in Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, already warned us about the coming of deadly and destructive rains, floods and strong winds, if we continue refusing to listen to, and obeying, Him?
