DA provides feeds to NorMin poultry farmers; ensures Maramag town registers stable food source, livelihood amid COVID-19 pandemic hog raisers for DA-PCIC’s CAGAYAN DE ORO CIT Y – The Department of Agr ic ulture -10 thru its Livestock Program recently distributed 1,433 bags of poultry feeds amounting to P2.7 million to its recipients under the Expanded Livestock and Poultry Production and Livelihood Project for COVID-19 livelihood response. Around 669 recipients of the region received one bag each, while 774 bags were provided to the two production centers of the agency. Early this year, the qualified farmer recipients in the provinces of Bukidnon (151); Misamis Oriental (193); Camiguin (119); Misamis Occidental (156), and Lanao del Norte (50) received 6 heads free-range chicken with a 1:5 ratio (1 male, 5 female) under the Bayanihan to Heal as One Program. DA-10 Regional Executive Director Carlene C. Collado said, that DA ensures a stable source of food and livelihood amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - With the aim of pushing for the Swine Industry Insurance Program, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Maramag through its Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) coordinates with the DA- Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) to facilitate registration of hog raisers on the agency’s insurance program. Said event was conducted to encourage both backyard and commercial hog raisers to register for PCIC’s insurance program to mitigate the effects brought about by the deadly hog disease, African Swine Fever (ASF). DA-10 Regional Executive Director Carlene C. Collado emphasized that DA-NorMin distributes 1,433 bags of poultry feeds worth P2.7 million under the Expanded Livestock and Poultry Production and Livelihood Project for COVID-19 liveli- starting July 1 of this year,

Survival of the Fittest

THERE is now an evolving consciousness that Darwin’s theory of Survival of the Fittest is flawed and must be debunked, a wrong concept that has given way to a roadmap of paradigm that has justified the gross inequities and social injustices in a world where a few oligarchs are in control, that is, if “fittest” is equated to the strongest, the most aggressive who will defeat anyone who dare to challenge to dominate. That dictum only applies to a jungle-like existence like hungry wolves competing who is the one who will eat a cornered prey. That mindset of the strongest controlling everything has worked for the beasts in a world where the name of the game is survival. It should not be the case now where the name of the game should be sharing, cooperation and service. That is the core value of all religions, that is, to serve the least of our brethren but is now utterly disregarded by a humanity that is giving high veneration to the profit-motive that has already captured the mindset of all governments, all institutions, all universities and even of religious groups. Indeed, there is denigration of spirituality in a world buried in so much consumerism and materialism. COVID-19 is a wake-up call!

It is horrible even to contemplate the present economic order in a world where only eight families have a total wealth equivalent to the total assets of more than 3.6 billion earthlings based on a study by Oxfam. I can only surmise that these billionaires with their tremendous financial rakings at the expense of the people and the environment are justifying such economic domination because afterall it is survival of the fittest and they are the fittest who would crash down anyone in business. No sir! Enough is enough of so much unbridled materialism and consumerism. That theory has reduced man who is an embodied spirit created by God in His image and likeness to being just a beast. That flawed theory has spawned a wrong development paradigm called Neo-Liberal Capitalism, a growth-at-all-cost development strategy that has sacrificed Mother Earth and the people to the altar of greed and profit. History tells us how man has become so dominating that wars have to be resorted every time threats to one’s domain loom. There is no need to live in that jungle-like world anymore. The universe is unfolding so fast that there are so many things to do, to know, to discover and to explore. No need to prove

who is the best but the only path is to cooperate, to work together, to be one so that humanity can journey to a higher level towards spirituality. Each one of us is a stream of consciousness that must be connected to each other to gain strength towards that Ocean of Consciousness called Love, the Formless, the Unmanifested, the Supreme Being called God So the meaning now of the “fittest,” is the most cooperative, the most loving, the most service-oriented. Man has ceased to be Homo Sapiens as such is a failed specie who caused the deaths of more than 100 million of his kindred during the last one hundred years. That specie now has evolved to be Homo Pacem or Espiritus Luminus, men and women for peace and enlightened spirits as they are now connected to that Ocean of Love called God! Indeed, man is more spiritual than being a body so we must not “live by bread alone.” Even King Solomon in the Ecclesiastes said that power, wealth, titles – these are meaningless, utterly meaningless. The “Great Resignation” ARE you, my dear readers, currently dissatisfied with your job? Did you feel overwhelmed or not challenged enough? Play with the idea of throwing everything away and quitting? Unless you’re walking into a glossy, new, upgraded role, leaving a job to head in a different direction can be hard, upsetting and even leave people feeling like a failure. Faced with the prospect of quitting, Denver, Colorado-based organisational psychologist Melissa Doman, MA, says, “typically speaking, people still self-criticise. For many people, their job is heavily tied to their identity and their self-efficacy”. When I blink back after almost 50 years of work, I’ve quit my job several times. Yes, quitting – particularly without a job to go to – can be emotionally challenging and carry stigma - as writer Joanna York got it to the point. Most of my colleagues thought that I was rushing into a bad decision. I was already anxious about having quit and their remarks put more doubt in my head. Still, despite these fac-

tors, indications are that many people want to leave their jobs. In fact, 41% of all workers are thinking about handing in their notice, according to a recent global survey by Microsoft. In the US, a record number of workers quit their jobs in April 2021, and similar waves are anticipated in nations including the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. There’s even a name for it: the Great Resignation. Joanna York describes it like this: There are multiple reasons for this trend, from people re-evaluating what they want from their careers during the pandemic, to the stress of juggling home and work life, or even discontent with employers. Whatever the motivator, many who choose to leave their current roles will find the process emotionally challenging. ‘Quitting’ often comes with negative connotations, both from the people around us and from ourselves, even if we have good cause. But the upheaval caused by the pandemic – and the sheer number of potential quitters – could help us

remove the stigma around resignation, and reframe it as a more positive choice. WHO would have thought that the girl who used to sell kakanin in Calasiao, Pangasinan’s public market would be a successful entrepreneur? Her name is Erlinda Torres, the owner of Pinay Decena’s Calasiao Puto. As the eldest child, at an early age of 12, Erlinda used to help her mother in selling kakanin in the town market during weekends to support their daily needs until she graduated from college. Hence, her determination is so notable that despite all the challenges and tasks she faced as a young adult, she was able to finish her degree in Accountancy. After graduating from college, she worked as a government

employee but her paycheck was insufficient to support her younger siblings. She then decided to work abroad as a house helper for six years, thinking that it was the best decision for her family. When she decided to return home and stay for good, she was employed for 18 years at a private construction company before she realized that there would not be enough room for growth so that was when she decided to put up her own business. Cebu Pacific resumes flights to Siargao and Bohol

THE Philippines’ leading airline, Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), restarts its passenger flights from Manila to Siargao and Bohol, after the local governments of the two provinces lifted travel restrictions. Pandemic: Its Challenges and Effect to Distance Learning By EDWIN O. MAMBA

THE world is in chaos, the world is in danger! The global problem the world is facing today is the COVID-19 pandemic. This world-wide problem affects so much of everyone’s life; ailment if not treated may cause death, closure of industries which resulted to unemployment are a few that this pandemic brings. Schools are closing, face to face teaching is suspended! How can we continue education without putting learners out of danger? Distance learning plays an important role in keeping our youth educated even staying in their respective homes. Virtual classes are made possible through the use of online platforms. Modules are distributed to students who do not have internet connection at home. How effective is the virtual classes? The modular? As to the effectivity of the delivery of learning, still, a chal-

lenge. Educators are trying their best to deliver quality education for all. Modules as a matter of fact, are meticulously developed and simplified to suit to the needs of the students. Subjects are even divided by weeks so that students will not find it a burden. Two subjects are to be answered in every two weeks. In three-month time (1 quarter), the eight subjects are expectedly answered and returned. Since the distribution is done every two weeks, aside from text/ call, teachers created group chats on social media to communicate his/her students online. challenges then come in when students failed to claim the modules, answer and return them on time. If text/call and GC isn’t effective, teachers risk themselves of the last options, the home visitation (following the COVID-19 Protocol) just to retrieve/ deliver the modules.

On the other hand, Virtual learning is not generally practiced last year in my school but personally, since I am teaching Drawing, I usually gather my students (with internet connection) for an online teaching-demonstration for the topic that needs further emphasis. Face to face consultation is done to parents who don’t have connections at home – which is more challenging! In conclusion, based on my experience, aside from the physical resources in coming up with modules (such as printers, printer ink, bond papers and etc), I found attitude and behavior of both learners and parents to be the most challenging in implementing distance learning! However, we were still able to surpass the school year 2020-2021. Hoping this pandemic will be over so that we will all go back to our normal lives again!

The curriculum made with teachers’ involvement can be a guide to teachers in developing strategies and methods for a successful teaching-learning process. With the changing needs and demands of the society they served, curriculum development can be challenging that all individuals involved in curriculum development and revision can play a vital role in its success. On the importance of teachers’ involvement in curriculum development, teachers’ involvement is very vital so that the content of the curriculum will be aligned to the different needs of the students in the teaching-learning process. They served as catalysts or agents of change since teachers serve as the front liners in the learning process of a student. As teachers, we transform ideas into knowledge and scaffold them to make a product. The transfer of learning occurs in curriculum development since teachers are the ones who are responsible for preparing the lesson plans or daily lesson logs and this will serve as the guide in implementing the learning process. One of the major responsibilities of a teacher is to come up with sustainable life-long learning for each student and teachers’ opinions must be free from biased since this will be included or part of the curriculum. On the challenges teachers face in curriculum development, teachers equipped with knowledge and skills, hone with experiences, and guided with competencies are an important key in the curriculum development process. With this crucial role of teachers, they must be provided with opportunities to

enhance their knowledge in the program. The approach of different learning styles must be strategized accordingly to meet the needs of all learners. At the end of the day, teachers must reflect on the strategies used in the lesson in accordance with the need of the learners. There are times that the curriculum is vague that the teachers need to participate in seminars or workshops to fill in the gap and to adopt change. In the preparation for teacher involvement in curriculum development, teachers must be provided with opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills in participating the curriculum development. Teachers must be empowered to attend training and workshops for better understanding the needs of learners and to contribute to curriculum development. In providing opportunities to every teacher to be part of curriculum development, they will not just grow professionally but will also provide self-fulfillment. On the teachers’ role in curriculum development, teachers are the center of the curriculum development and the ones who are responsible for preparing the learners for a brighter future. Teachers must create a sustainable life-long learning and conducive environment for learning to happen. One of the roles of a teacher is to prepare lesson plans or daily lesson logs design for students to arouse their interest. Teachers must work collaboratively with others in implementing curriculum development. In conclusion, no curriculum is perfectly made. It may undergo changes or revisions and be open to criticism. It can be a process of improvement to suit the needs of the learners. It should adapt to changes in what society demands. Lastly, for schools to be successful, they must continue to believe that changes are inevitable.

The Department of Education reported to distribute more than 235,000 subscriber identity module (SIM) cards with connectivity load. This aims to provide the schools’ personnel assistance to the ongoing flexible learning across the country due to the pandemic. Last August 23 and 25, 2021, Administrative Officer Karen Claire Ranulo spearheaded the scheduled release of the aforementioned SIM cards to the teaching and non-teaching personnel of Gusa Elementary School. The provided SIM cards

will provide 34GB of data monthly with 30 GB are allocated for work-related purposes and accessing websites white listed by DepEd while the remaining 4GB will be for Open Data Access. officers of the Basilan Provincial Police Office (BPPO) identified the victims as Hadji Adzhar Akram and Alih Yagao Abbah, who works as construction workers of a private construction firm RR Jam Construction. Investigation disclosed that both the victims were supervising a government road concreting project in Sitio Tando, Barangay Benembengan in Sumisip town. The police said the victims were hit by shrapnels when a bomb exploded which caused their injury in a roadside bombing incident. The BPPO tagged the Basilanbased Abu Sayyaf bandits headed by a certain Tawakkal Bayali responsible for the said bombing incident. The police blamed the incident on extortion which also usually happened in other provinces in Mindanao. As this developed, the local police and the military in the province have stepped up and strengthened security to make sure the road project will be completed as scheduled. - PNA
