Lawmen seize pirated CDs, DVDs worth P37.2 million GENERAL Santos City-Roughly P37.2 million worth of pirated CDs and DVDs were seized in a joint operation Thursday afternoon by police and Optical Media Board (OMB) personnel at the city central public market. Joseph Arnaldo, OMB team leader, called the haul the second biggest seizure in the city since 2016. ILIGAN City--The Highway Patrol Unit in Cotabato City is now preparing charges against an active police officer who was arrested on Tuesday morning, September 24, for keeping a vehicle believed to be stolen. Police Captain Santos Libres Monares, who was assigned at Marawi City Police Station as deputy

Army’s 103rd brigade has new commander By DIVINA M. SUSON Correspondent

ILIGAN City--The deputy brigade commander of the Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade based in Marawi City officially assumed on Friday (September 27) as commander of the unit after Brigadier General Romeo Brawner Jr. was appointed as Commandant of Cadets of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA). Brawner replaced BGen. Bartolome Bacarro who resigned following the death of Cadet 4th Class Dar win Dormitorio on September 24 due to hazing. In a ceremony held at the social hall inside Camp Ranao in Marawi City, Cuerpo, in his assumption speech, vowed to uphold the priorities and directions of the previous commanders, as the unit’s guide to maintain the cohesive efforts in the pursuit of peace and development in the province of Lanao del Sur. He also pledged to continue render assistance to Task Force Bangon Marawi, that supervises the recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation of Marawi’s most affected area (MAA). Davao Norte, BuCor agree to open disputed roads By CHE PALICTE

DAVAO CITY--More roads will be opened for public use in Davao del Norte’s two agricultural towns after an agreement forged by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and the provincial government. After a brief tension in Brgy. Balagunan in Santo Tomas town on Thursday involving placard-carrying residents demanding the opening of a road, BuCor and Tagum Agricultural Development Company, Inc. (Tadeco) agreed to allow public access starting October 7. The road, traversing the Tadeco-owned banana plantation situated within BuCor’s property, has been closed since 2015 after Tadeco put up gates for “bio-security” reasons. BuCor prison camps commander Rufino Martin said it only allows Tadeco, which has been leasing the land for decades, to seal off the road for security reasons, pointing out that its inmates work at the banana plantation.

SWEET words are easy to say; nice things are easy to buy; but good people are different to find. When this paper hits the roads, I am still in Manila attending several important diplomatic meetings and celebrating Germany’s National Day of Unity on October 3. Especially this celebration let me always think back. 20 years ago, 30 years, even 40 years ago... . Fact is: our life is borrowed - from God. No rental

On Maria Ressa’s opinion piece at The Los Angeles Times WE have read Maria Ressa’s 25 September 2019 opinion piece at The Los Angeles Times, entitled “Opinion: Americans, look to the Philippines to see a dystopian future created by social media.” It is tragic that Ms. Ressa remains out of touch with the political realities on the ground as she continues to insinuate that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte won through lies and fake propaganda as she claims that “lies laced with anger and hate began to systematically tear our democracy apart in the Philippines,” and that “Like a virus, this disease spread fast. With the help of social media, President Rodrigo Duterte was elected in May 2016.” The President won fair and square and trashed his nearest political rival with the largest electoral margin in Philippine history. Sim-

ply put, the CEO of Rappler refuses to accept that the President is what the people truly wanted and needed. The people hoped for an action man who can bring positive change to their lives and the Filipino people got what they wanted and truly wanted. His style of governance, albeit unorthodox, resonates with the people. This is not democracy being torn apart but rather democracy naturally playing out. The results speak for themselves. Three years into President Duterte’s term, he maintained a high satisfaction rating where 80% of Filipinos are satisfied with his performance, and 85% approve of and trust the President according to two independent pollsters, notwithstanding all the black propaganda and loud political noise waged against the President and

his Administration. To debunk the “destruction of democracy” (in the words of Ms. Ressa), a noncommissioned survey conducted in the third quarter of 2018, disclosed that 84% of Filipinos are satisfied with the way democracy works in the country. Ironically, the latter was even reported by Ms. Ressa’s own news website. Again, Ms. Ressa continues to cite the baseless number of “27,000” drug addicts that were allegedly killed, which is actually the total homicide cases including cases not related to the drug war. Sticking to the hard facts that came from our law enforcement agencies, the number of unfortunate deaths from legitimate police operations are only 5,526. The government reiterates that this anti-illegal drug campaign is backed

by the public. In the second quarter, 82% of adult Filipinos are satisfied with this campaign according to another Social Weather Stations survey. Moreover, the government assures that it does not employ “disinformation tactics.” This is not the policy and the practice of the Duterte administration. Our office at the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) is at the forefront to combat disinformation not only to clear out matters that concern the government but also to empower individuals to be responsible and vigilant consumers of media, especially in the digital space, through our “Dismiss Disinformation” campaign and other of our many programs. MANILA -- Fitch Solutions still sees the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) overnight reverse repurchase (RRP) rate at 4 percent by end-2019 but is open to the possibility for another cut before yearend due to the trade tensions overseas, among others. In a report released Friday, the unit of Fitch Group maintained its forecast that Philippine monetary officials will keep the current rates on hold to monitor the impact of the total of 75 basis points cut to date but return to easing mode through another 25 basis points slash next year. “Nevertheless, we believe there is a high chance the BSP eases further as it focuses on growth and sees scope from investor accommodation to further easing,” it said. BSP’s policy-making Monetar y B oard (MB) lowered the central bank’s policy rates by 25 basis points each in May, August and September after noting the sustained deceleration of domestic inflation rate and firm domestic output.

DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur -- In a bid to prevent road accidents here, the local chief executive said he has sought the approval of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) for the release of funds to purchase more traffic lights. During DCRRMC’s 3rd quarter meeting on Wednesday, Mayor Josef Cagas said the purchase of additional traffic lights was just an initial step to prevent the occurrence of vehicular accidents in accident-prone areas. Cagas said the traffic signaling system will be installed at the intersections of Barangay Aplaya and the Davao City to Makar Road leading to General Santos City. CDRRMC Executive Officer Gil Gubat said a single unit of traffic signaling system equipped with closed-circuit television cameras will cost around PHP10 million. “The money will be s ourced out f rom t he CDRRMC’s trust fund from

calendar year 2018. Our current balance is PHP14 million,” Gubat said. Cagas said the local government will look for more ways and means to improve road safety in the city. “As much as possible we will install traffic signaling system in all accident-prone intersections...to reduce vehicular accidents that cost the lives and limbs of both commuters and motorists passing through our city,” Cagas said. The sector also supported 5.4 million jobs or 13% of the country’s total employment. With more meaningful investments, the Philippines could reach the 10 million visitor milestone within the next few years. However, Zobel equally stressed that “Any initiative on developing an area should always integrate and address the interests of the environment and the local communities.” At Ayala, estate development plans reflect these considerations. For example, Ayala Land’s (ALI) Carbon Forest Program is designed to absorb and store carbon in six project sites covering some 587 hectares of land. The program protects and restores early secondary growth forests in swamplands, wetlands and inland location across the country. Lio Tourism Estate in El Nido has 48 hectares of these forests. On the sociocultural and economic aspects, ALI continues to partner with the El Nido community by sourcing from them local resources for its operational needs. Alampay focused on the critical role communities play as agents in the care and keeping of the mangroves in coastal towns where these are typically overlooked as an ecotourism centerpiece. Moreover, mangroves act as a natural coastal defense, preventing soil erosion and flooding. They are effective carbon sinks, capable of removing up to four times more carbon in the atmosphere, compared to tropical forests. They maintain water quality, enhancing the breeding ground for wildlife and protecting biodiversity. He emphasized the need for ecosystem-based approaches toward coastal conservation and sustainable tourism development.

Cainta embraces Mag-Pinggang Pinoy® Tayo! Program

The ceremonial contract signing held last September 20, 2019 at Cainta Elementary School was graced by former DOH Undersecretary and Mag -Pinggang-Pinoy® Tayo! 2019 Technical Working Group (TWG) Chairman Dr. Ethelyn P. Nieto, Cainta Mayor Johnielle Kieth Nieto, Cainta Vice Mayor Ace Bernardo Servillon, DOH CALABARZON Division Chief Dr. Noel Pasion, FNRI Science Research Specialist II Ms. Jovina B. The country has been facing decades-long phenomenon called “Double Burden of Malnutrition”, which the World Health Organization (WHO) defined as the “coexistence of undernutrition along with overweight and obesity, or diet-related noncommunicable diseases, within individuals, households and populations, and across the lifecourse.”. In 2018, Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation partnered with government agencies to conduct the pilot run of Mag-Pinggang Pinoy® Tayo! in order to raise awareness and promote the practice of Pinggang Pinoy® in malnutrition hotspots in Quezon City, Kalookan, Malabon and Navotas. The only difference is that this sport combines spirit, dance, sweat and cheer for its performance and may or may not be competitive. High school cheerleading contains aspects of school spirit as well as competition. These teams have become part of a yearround cycle which starts in June and ends in March of the succeeding year.
