JICA: Supports SHS of ONSTS By JAY C. MILA Teacher - III Opol National Secondary Technical School

Opol National Secondary Technical School is situated in the Municipality of Opol, though not a distant far from the melting pot of the province of Misamis Oriental; the Cagayan de Oro City. Yet, it manages to immerse as one best pilot public Technical School in the entire region despite the fact that there are other competitive schools around with vast industries that could suffice and cater the needs of their students. Among the many reasons why the school manages to promote quality education to their students is due to the various aids and support the school gets from Department of Education, Local Government Unit (LGU) and the strong partnership of foreign

aided organizations like Japan International Cooperation Association (JICA), and the local industries including hotels and restaurants. Moreover, the school has also made and effort in conceptualization of project proposals submitted and granted by TESDA, JICA and TechVoc unit of the Department of Education. JICA’s project in support to the Senior High School Modelling Program has been very useful to the learning process of the SHS students; the tools and equipment donated for the State of the Art building (SOTA), were all apt and mostly essential to the trainings of the students. It also extend a great deal of help to the school since it has been chosen as training venue for TVL teachers as

part of Misamis Oriental Division’s preparation of SHS full implementation. With all these tremendous support from JICA, the teachers and students were able to work more efficiently because equipment are enough and all working so well. Grade 12 students will undergo industry immersion. Regular monitoring and going-over were made by the industry coordinator just to ensure that students are performing well. So far, the feedbacks that the school gets from the partner industries were all good and commendable. In conclusion, the school is at its best when it comes to equipment and facilities appropriate for actual trainings; thus, delivering quality education to students which lead to better employment opportunities.

Live In Feng Shui LIVE in partners have different Feng Shui treated compared to married ones! It happened to a couple client who didn’t disclose that they were not married and we’re just living in. So garbage in garbage out Feng Shui resulted. They eventually separated due to the wrong Feng Shui basis! We only found out later when the woman consulted

on her own. It turned out that she owned the property where they cohabited and worst she was the breadwinner Thus the Feng Shui only worked for her not her ex who suffered economic dislocation and no longer accorded maintaining her! Bottomline is that had they been married, the guy would have had benefited from the good chi. But since

they were not no effect. Even negative impact. The proper balance would have been achieved if technically the couple had a special off books written agreement whereby the guy serves as lessor or boarder in her property to gave a common Feng Shui basis short of conjugality. This is imperative to effect Feng Shui for both parties. Otherwise it only works for the property owner and may

be detrimental to the live in partner! So there live in with proper Feng Shui and disclosure as to your relationship status accordingly. Only then can luck and prosperity be mutual til you part ways.

On the exit of coal: not in our lifetime?

WITH Germany’s recent announcement to close its 84 coal power plants by 2038, is our country ready to follow suit? To date, some 20 coalfired power plants are operating in the country today. Yet, some of the developed countries like Germany are slowly getting away from the use of coal. No other country burns excessive coal as Germany. Around a quarter of German electricity comes from the carbon-heavy fuel, also known as brown coal. Coal is cheap, mined domestically and responsible for around 20 percent of Germany’s greenhouse gas emissions. If Germany is dead serious about its target of cutting emissions to half what they were in 1990 by 2038, dirty coal has to go. That said, the Movement for Blackout-free Mindanao is sending this distress call to President Duterte: stop building coal-fired power plants under your watch. Enough with the existing coal plants, and shift on the use of renewable energy as

early as now. We badly need your intercession to address with a sense of urgency the country’s power headache by presenting renewable power solutions acceptable to the people. You promised us about the changes we fought side by side during the campaign, and one of those was to provide sufficient, adequate, sustainable, environmentdriven and reliable power supply for the country’s inclusive growth. But to address the country’s power lack through the dumping of coal plants all over the islands is another story and something we are dead serious about. We feel worried about what this coal would bring as far as protecting our people from the discord of environmental collapse. Fact is, there are new coal-fired power plants being built right now in Mindanao and elsewhere in the country, some are already in, while others are in the pipeline. Given this development,

these coal plants would definitely translate into additional capacities the island would need to meet its growing demand in the next five years and beyond. But in this case, power consumers would have to pay the price of development: toxic emissions and greenhouse gases. Now, we would like to invite the President to take a pause and think for a moment. Do we really need these coal-fired power plants. We the Movement for a Blackout-free Mindanao, as volunteer watchdog for the efficient and uninterrupted delivery of electricity support this move of ridding the country free from dirty coal unconditionally. A win-win solution is what it takes to strike a sustainable, efficient and environment-driven power supply for the country. The previous administration had been working on a 30-30-30 fuel mix goal to reduce the country’s coal dependence. The remaining 10 per cent comes from

Ruffy Magbanua

oil-based power plants. The country’s energy policy is primarily focused on sourcing out about 30 per cent of its energy requirements from coal, 30 per cent from renewable energy, and another 30 per cent from natural gas. Energy sources has revealed that 70 per cent of the 5,000 megawatts (MW) of power-generating capacity that are being built and will be built until 2020 are coal-based. Environmentalists had openly opposed for the use of coal, it being tagged as “dirty energy” because of its toxic emissions. The use of fossil fuels like coal as an energy source is the number one driver of global warming being a top emitter of greenhouse gases. We are all aware that the See COAL, page 11

36 Philippine Companies joins the world’s biggest food trade Fair - Anuga2019

COLOGNE, Germany--In the efforts of DTI’s aggressive move towards trade promotions of exportable food and fruit products with the aim to further boost Philippine export industry, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) delegation led by Trade Promotions Undersecretary Abdulgani M. Macatoman is currently together with 36 Philippine food producers and manufacturers in the much-awaited leading trade fair for food and beverage industry, Anuga 2019 running 5-9 of October in Koelmesse, Cologne Germany. “This gathering signal a strong ‘One DTI’–an agency united by a common cause to uphold the quality of our local businesses and the export competitiveness of the Philippines in the global trade”, Usec Macatoman said during the Ceremonial Opening. The Philippines highlighted the country’s premium commodities – banana, coconut, mango, and tuna along with other top-notch products in the said trade

fair. Speaking of trade, the Philippines and European countries have always maintained a solid partnership in matters of trade and investments. In terms of region, the European Union or EU is currently the Philippines’ 4th largest trading partner, 3rd largest import source and 4th largest export market in 2018 with Germany as our top 7 export country destination. The Philippines also continues to enjoy zero tariff benefits from the EU under the Generalized Scheme of Preferences or GSP+. The GSP+ coverage was implemented in 2014 and currently gives duty-free privileges in 6, 274 product tariff lines from the Philippines. The EU Commission’s 2018 mid-term GSP evaluation showed that the Philippines has the second most diversified export portfolio under EU-GSP+ with 3,047 tariff lines covered under EU-GSP+ from 2014-2016. The same report also indicated that the Philippines See FAIR, page 9

Zubiri: Senate to push for pay hikes and direct grants to teachers “I shall push for pay hikes and direct grants to teachers and prioritize the bills filed in the Senate. Our teachers deserve more than we have managed to give them such as salary increases in line with the Salary Standardization Law in 2015 mandating a series of increases in four years that ends this year. Government has promised to institute another round of government pay hikes. We will initiate the push for pay hikes in the Senate,” said Majority Leader Juan Miguel F. Zubiri as the country celebrates National Teachers Day. “For public school teachers, we will consider to upgrade the Salary Grade (SG) of teachers by putting entry level teachers in Salary Grade 19 instead of SG 11 (SBN by Sen. Angara); additional P10,000 compensation a month (SBN 37 by Sen. Pangilinan); additional chalk allowance (SBN by Sens. Recto & Revilla); and payment of the longoverdue Magna Carta ben-

efits.” I filed Senate Bill No. 104 pushing for P10,000 monthly additional pay, grant of bigger chalk allowance, P1,000 annual medical check-up allowance and giving the longdelayed yet much-deserved Magna Carta benefits. If President Duterte would push through with his promise during the State of the Nation Address to double public school teachers salaries, we will help him find the sources of funds as that would entail additional P343.7 Billion. The proposed 2020 Department of Education budget for salaries is P417,548,392,000.” The proposed 2020 Budget includes additional benefits to be paid to teachers directly, as follows: Special Hardship Allowance set at a maximum of 25% of total basic pay for the year and annual World Teachers Day grant of P1,000. Currently, each teacher is given a cash allowance of P3,500 per school year to buy chalks,

Walay laing tumong ug

erasers, forms, portfolio preparation and other classroom supplies and materials. “Ibinibigay ito sa bawat guro pero para ito sa gamit sa pagtuturo, hindi personal na benepisyo. Mahabang panahon na silang nag-aabono para sa mga supplies. Susuportahan ko na dagdagan ito ng bawat taon para sa kabuuang P10,000.” “Likewise, I shall push for bigger support to InService Training to be conducted by the University of the Philippines, Philippine Normal University, Development Academy of the Philippines and other highly-rated public or private institutions. The in-service training will benefit the public school system and enhance the learning experience of Filipino students. It will boost the morale of all Filipino teachers already known to be among the best teachers abroad.” “The pay hikes and additional grants will make the Philippines the greener pasture they have been

looking for. We expect that more teachers will choose to stay here in the country. They don’t have to leave the Philippines.” Zubiri pointed out that the DepEd experiences difficulty in hiring more teachers every year. Of 882,528 total permanent positions, the DepEd hired only 815,599 in 2017; 825,364 in 2018 and this year, of 950,969 total permanent positions. “The public school system has been losing qualified teachers to other industries such as call centers and service industries.” “By paying our teachers bigger salaries, we shall graduate from our sad reputation in the past as an ‘exporter’ of teachers. They will now have a strong reason to stay as teachers in the country and not leave their families. Inaasahan nating hindi na mapipilitang kumapit sa patalim ang ating mga guro kapag naipasa na ang mga isinusulong nating dagdag sahod at benepisyo.”

Positive discipline in everyday teaching By FATIMA A. CABEGUIN

In the advent of this new generation nowadays, it cannot be denied that one of the challenges that greatly posts not only to the parents but also to the public school teachers is the imposition of discipline, specifically positive discipline among our young learners of today. The Department of Education (DepEd) has been intensifying and strengthening the implementation and practice of positive discipline in the everyday teaching of our teachers. Positive discipline is a program developed by Dr. Jane Nelsen. It is based on the work of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs and is designed to teach young people to become responsible, respectful and resourceful members of their communities. Positive discipline teaches important social and life skills in a manner that is deeply respectful and encouraging for both children and adults, including parents, teachers, childcare

providers, youth workers, and others. Recent researches tell us that children are hardwired from birth to connect with others, and that children who feel a sense of connection to their community, family and school are less likely to misbehave. To be successful contributing members of the community, children must learn necessary social and life skills. Moreover, positive discipline is based on the understanding that discipline must be taught and that discipline teaches. Thus, in every school setting, positive discipline must be imposed in the everyday teaching of the teachers to the pupils. Child learners should not be expressed with verbal hurtful words so as to not feel them being bullied even by the teachers and their classmates. Teachers must be very extra careful in giving comments and opinions to their learners, and yes, teachers must be extra sensitive when talking and directing instructions to them.

CHESS is a two-player strategy board game played on a checkered board with 64 square arranged in an 8x8 grid. The game is played by millions of people worldwide. Chess is believed to be derived from the Indian game chaturanga sometime before the 7th centur. Chaturanga is also the likely ancestor of the Eastern strategy games xianqi, janggi and shogi, Chess reached Europe by the 9th century due to the Umayyad conquest of Hispania. The pieces assumed their current powers in Spain the late 15th century. The modern rules

were standardized in the 19th century. Play involves no hidden information. Each player begins with 16 pieces – one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops and eight pawns. Each piece type moves differently with the most powerful being the queen and the least powerful the pawn. The objective is to checkmate the opponent’s king by placing it under an inescapable threat of capture. To this end, a player’s pieces are used to attack and capture the opponent’s pieces while supporting each other. During the game, play typically involves exchanging pieces for the opponent’s similar pieces.

What makes FOTON’s Big AtTRUCKtion the biggest sale of the year are the event-exclusive zero downpayment deals, discounted low monthly amortizations, and cash discounts up to a whopping P 300,000. CASH DISCOUNTS For those who will purchase in the event via cash basis, FOTON gives away exclusive cash discounts applicable to both passenger and commercial vehicles. For those who would like to venture on a transport service business, the 2018 TransVan models is available with a cash discount up to PhP 100,000. For your private family

Intensifying principles of leadership among pupils By FATIMA A. CABEGUIN

According to the prominent public figure and leadership theorist John Gardner, “We give every appearance of sleepwalking through a dangerous passage of histor y.” Sleepwalking is a frightening metaphor in the wake of complex times surrounded by technological innovation, societal shifting, terrorism, political instability, and globalization. In shaping our responses, the learners, have two choices: they can remain passive, disconnected bystanders, or they can walk the paths of leadership by engaging the issues of the day and seeking important changes. But what is leadership? It’s been asked many times before, and answered just as many. The problem is that despite all the fancy definitions of leadership, we often lose touch with the principles behind the definitions. In science, principles are “elements that compose a substance, especially ones that gives some special quality or effect.” In leadership, there are essential elements that make it unique from other terms and practices. Understanding these principles is imperative to answering the call of leadership. These principles include: 1) Leadership is a collective, not a singular activity; 2) Leadership is not management; and 3) Leadership is rooted in service. Principle 1: Leadership is a Collective, not Singu-

DavOr declares every Friday as province-wide cleanup day lar, Activity. This means learners have to become proactive and accountable. It means we have to use the term “collaborators” because our efforts are collective. It means we have to understand everything we do, or do not do, impacts everyone else. It means we can no longer look to singular commanders, but rather to communities of shared responsibility and accountability. Communities that we have shaped, encouraged, and emboldened with common values, principles, and purposes. Moreover, on Principle 2: Leadership is not management, leadership, though, must be separated from management. This distinction is not simply word play, it’s a vital differentiation in philosophy, objectives, means, and values. Understanding will be key to your success as a leader. And indeed, leadership is rooted in service. There is also a “vision side” of service. As leaders, we serve a higher purpose, a greater cause, a larger vision. Think of the great leaders of history and you immediately think of their service to a larger vision: George Washington and democracy; Martin Luther King, Jr. and civil rights; Mother Theresa and service to the world’s needy; Carl Sagan and little kids running around everywhere excited about science. As students, if we approach leadership from the aspect of serving others and a higher vision, we are with purpose.

Oriental are now directed to conduct an intensified cleanup drive every Friday. In an interview on Sunday, Karen Lou Deloso, provincial information officer, said Governor Nelson Dayanghirang has issued on Friday an executive order that aims to mitigate, reduce and control the spread of dengue vector mosquitoes. “Governor Dayanghirang issued the order due to the dengue which became a

by

perennial problem not just in the province but also in the whole country,” Deloso added. “Each year we spent a lot of resources for the treatment of patients with dengue. What’s worse is that people suffer unnecessary deaths due to this deadly disease which could have been prevented,” Dayanghirang said during the launch of the cleanup drive on Friday. Apart from that, Day-

anghirang also turned over two fog machines to the Public Health Office to be used in case of a dengue outbreak and one spray can to each of the 11 LGUs of the province. “These fog machines and spray cans are only temporary solutions. What we need to do is to work together to prevent this disease from spreading,” he said. Dayanghirang urged

everyone to be responsible in cleaning their own communities and houses, especially areas that are potential breeding grounds for dengue mosquitoes. “The solution is in our hands. There should be no more incidents of dengue in our province,” he added. “We must all be united. Let’s make it a habit to clean up our own respective communities because that is See DECLARES, page 10

there were several unconfirmed information regarding Robinsons’ first Galleria mall in Mindanao. Sources from Cagayan de Oro and Davao cities both confirm that the company had purchased properties for a Galleria mall in their respective cities. Robinsons’ business dealings in Zamboanga City also prompted speculations that the company will put up a Galleria mall. Officials of the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (ZAMCELCO) are said to be in serious talks with Robinson’s Corporation, a major retail establishment, for the construction of a mall at the Zamcelco site in Putik. However, according to the information shared by the said local official, a team from Robinsons visited their city, which he requested not to be disclosed yet, on February. He told MEB the team presented him a mall render which is for a Robinsons Galleria mall. The local official requested that his name and the name of the city should remain unidentified until official press release will circulate. Mindanao Economic Boom is still trying to look for sources inside the said company to verify the information disclosed by the local government official.

excess sugar production in the world market because they provide subsidies and other forms of protection such as domestic and export support prices to their sugar farmers and industries. The United States, a champion of liberalization and globalization, also has an existing policy to regulate sugar importation to effec-

tively protect its farmers from the rise and fall of prices in the world market, he cited. The Confederation of Sugar Producers Association Inc. (Confed) also acknowledged the move by legislators for opposing the liberalization of sugar imports. “We in Confed have never been prouder of our champions in the House of Representatives for feeling the sentiments of the sugar producers, including millions of others who in one way or another are dependent on the sugar industry for their day-to-day needs,” said Raymond Montinola, national spokesperson of Confed. The legislators believe that import liberalization will be detrimental to farmers, farm workers, their families and communities across the 28 sugar producing provinces of the Philippines. The resolution was signed by Representatives Francisco Benitez, Joseph Steven Paduano, Noel Villanueva, Arnulfo Teves Jr., Jocelyn Limkaichong, Leo Rafael Cueva, Gerardo Valmayor Jr., Juliet Marie Ferrer, Manuel Sagarbarria, Julienne Baronda, Janette Garin, Janice Salimbangon, Vincest Frasco, Lucy Torres Gomez, Lorenz Defensor, Emmanuel Billones, Manuel Zubiri, Eduardo Gullas, Emmarie “Lolypop” OuanoDizon, Wilfredo Caminero, Ma. Theresa Collantes, Greg Gasataya, Carl Nicolas Cari and Juan Pablo Bondoc. In a related development, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri has filed a resolution urging the Department of Agriculture (DA) and Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) to convert the “A” sugar to “B” sugar, saying that the country’s production target is way lower than the consumption, which is estimated to be at 2.4 million metric tons (MT). “If we avail of the US TRQ (tariff-rate quota), this will leave us with 1.99 million MT available for domestic consumption and short of more

Tuesday, October 8, 2019 than 400,000 MT, which the country has to import to fill the domestic consumption,” Zubiri said. He also pointed out that with the current domestic price of sugar at PHP1,500 per 50-kilo bag and exports to US priced only at PHP1,100 per 50-kilo bag, this in effect will result to the domestic consumers subsidizing the price of sugar export to the US. Confed agrees with Zubiri’s proposal that the “A” allocation should have been kept as “B” or for domestic use “since we fall short in our sugar production to accommodate and supply the local demand.” “This allocation could have provided better prices for our local farmers who are in a quandary as to the marginal farm gate prices of sugar in the past three years,” Confed said in a statement. It is also Confed’s position that only beverage companies will be allowed direct access to sugar imports as they have preferred standard for their soft drink manufacture (bottler’s grade -- refined sugar), but it must be emphasized that this should be under the direct supervision of the SRA for a calibrated, timely and transparent import program. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Ronald Illana, the commanding officer of the 8th Infantry Battalion encouraged the parents to send their children to military schools and get the privilege and honor of serving the country. There are stories of mothers who deeply desire for the return of their beloved missing children without knowing they are already engaged in leftist organizations. The effort of the parents to have a core group within the campus to monitor NPA recruitment of students is substantial to the government program on ending the local communist armed conflict. After the workshops, the volunteers showcased their output during the cultural night During the camp, a regional network of CDD champions and advocates was established named Davao Region KalahiCIDSS Community Volunteers’ Association, composed of one community volunteer representative per municipality. “The formation of the group is another milestone in the program because the community volunteers will not only help build sub-projects but also help promote the process of Kalahi-CIDSS’ community empowerment and improved local governance,” said Merlinda A. The group will also serve as venue for partnership and collaboration which will help ensure participation of residents in local decision-making process and strengthen the link between citizens and Local Government Units (LGU). Royeca Palbe, the first community volunteer elected as one of the members of Kalahi-CIDSS Community Volunteers’ Association, shared her experiences in the recent national activity. “Ang akong nakat-unan kauban ang mga volunteers sa lain laing rehiyon, naa diay tay oportunidad nga mu duso ug mu impluwensya sa mga naa sa gobyerno nga maoy nagadisisyon ug nagahimo og mga balaod

Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Herminigilda Nartates, said while there are 997 cases of dengue in the province with four recorded deaths from January to September, dengue cases have significantly decreased in the latter months. She said that while there are 105 cases for the month of July and 137 in August, cases have dropped to only nine for September. “Although there is a decrease in the number of cases, we should not let our guards down. Mosquitoes are small but are deadly,” she said. “Four deaths are not just a number. These are lives that could have been saved,” she added. She emphasized the important role of the communities in getting rid of dengue mosquitoes through cleanliness and proper sanitation. Joeford Montejo Jr., Department of Health Regional Office administrative officer, lauded Davao Oriental for being the only province in the region that created a Dengue Task Force. He said this only means that the local leadership is serious enough in its efforts to make sure that everyone is safe from the vector-borne disease. He also committed the department’s continuous support to the local government units especially in providing free dengue test kits. within the capitol premises are not covered by a recent presidential proclamation and a Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) directive, as these are not the common roads referred to in the order. “These [Capitol] roads are exempted from that order,” he said, adding that it is even the prerogative of the provincial government to close them if it wishes to as it has jurisdiction over these streets. He said there is no in-

struction yet from Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano to conduct road-clearing operation inside the capitol compound, adding that if the DILG or the city government will push through with the demolition, they must coordinate with the governor’s office first. “If the DILG will invoke the President’s order, then we will also reply and clarify our side on the status and nature of the property,” Dugaduga said. Meanwhile, a city government official has appealed to the governor to conduct their own removal of obstructions within the capitol premises instead. “We are not contesting the ownership of the property or structures inside the Capitol compound. But the [Department of the Interior and Local Government] directive is very clear,” said Antonio Resma, spokesperson of the composite team tasked by Mayor Oscar Moreno with clearing the city’s roads from illegally built structures, said in a statement Saturday. He said the order came from Duterte himself directing LGU officials, through the DILG, to carry out the road-clearing operation a few weeks ago. “It is addressed to all local chief executives, meaning governors, mayors, and barangay chairpersons. That’s why we are asking the province, out of respect, to voluntarily clear the area within their compound,” Resma said. He maintained that the Capitol compound is located within the city, thus national and local city ordinances would still apply. Also included in the DILG memorandum is for LGUs to revisit and revoke ordinances and permits issued to private and business establishments which have encroached or obstruct roads and sidewalks. The issue stemmed from Resma’s earlier remarks that his team would be forced to do the demolition of illegal structures within the Capitol premises if the provincial government won’t comply with Duterte’s order. He said the clearing operation is based on the President’s memorandum 121-2019 directing LGUs to retake public roads. In reaction, Emano has said he will resort to legal action should the city government-created team pursue with its plan to demolish structures that have encroached public roads inside the Capitol. Resma, however, clarified that it was not their intent to threaten Emano or the provincial government. He said he was just reacting to a query from a reporter who brought to his attention as feedback from concerned citizens regarding the structures along the roads inside the Capitol compound. At present, food vendors have occupied portions of the roads within the Capitol

Tuesday, October 8, 2019 promises. “We are both LGUs instructed by the President to reclaim the roads. For me, it would be better for Capitol to remove the structures that might have encroached on the roads there,” Resma said. (PNA)

The candidates also did a fashion show Monday afternoon featuring the collections of designer Bea Bianca at Ayala Malls Centrio in Cagayan de Oro City. Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano expressed his gratitude to the organizers of Miss Earth for including Misamis Oriental in its itinerary, saying that it is a testament that the province has already been marked by national stakeholders as a tourist destination. The visit is part of the candidates’ pageant which will culminate on October 26 at Cove Manila in Ikeda Manila.

Meanwhile, Sultan Naga Dimaporo (SND) town police is also monitoring its coastal barangays after receiving initial report that one of the two getaway pumpboats was heading towards Sultan Naga Dimaporo, an adjacent town of Tukuran. Major Javier Tanog, chief of SND police, said they are in constant coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard and the Army’s 5th Mechanized Battalion and did not monitor a suspicious group came in. While the known kidnapfor-ransom (KFR) group operating in the area was already dismantled sometime in 2010, authorities will continue to monitor for possibilities of having another criminal group coming according to Tanog. “So far naman, wala kaming na monitor sa area namin na may bagong grupo ng KFR. The basic education in the Philippines consists of six years or primary and four years of secondary education, a total of 10 years. Graduates who have completed the current 10 year basic education cycle are too young to legally join in the labor market and they have not mastered the necessary competencies. In order to enhance the quality of education, the Government of the Philippines is pursuing the K to 12 Program which will expand the country’s education cycle to globally comparable 12 years. It is also expected to facilitate a smooth transition from education to the labor market. Senior High School (SHS) covers the last two years of the K to 12 program and includes Grade 11 and 12. The 130th anniversary pop-up store tour will kick off in Manila, Philippines and make its way through China, Japan, Thailand and the Hong Kong to make it a remarkable one. Refreshing the Grocery Legacy You are probably not aware that the H.D Lee Mercantile company was a sourced grocer back in 1889. As a wholesale distributor from Salinas, Kansas to around the world, the H.D. Lee Mercantile Company was later transformed into a master of denim wear. The pop-up store concept for the 130th anniversary reminds fans of Lee’s roots and pays tribute to the legacy. It was built to allow visitors to immerse themselves into the past and feel the vibes of Lee as an innovative company that moves with time and style. To celebrate this significant milestone of Lee, we came up with the idea to create Lee paraphernalias replicated from actual items sold in Lee grocery shops back then. They are specially made for the anniversary and are not for sale. These limited edition products include mugs, foldable chairs, tin bottles and tote bags all stored and displayed in Lee’s grocery storage. 1. A white enamel mug f e at u r i n g a pr inted L ee logo with denim blue details for you to enjoy – whether it be your morning coffee, hot chocolate by the campfire, or both. 2. A black foldable chair (36 x 24 x 33 cm) with steel legs makes it easy and convenient to carry around and store when folded back into its waterproof dust bag. Lets you stay chill while camping! 3. This stainless steel water bottle makes saying no to plastic easier than ever. Packaged in coral paper milk carton, it doubles as another unique piece to collect. 4. The same captivating packaging is also featured on this soda can, holding a surprise for you upon opening - No liquid inside, but a durable, versatile and stylish denim tote bag that can be used to add an extra touch to your outfit. Extra points if you are already rocking Lee apparel. Buddy Lee X Seven Thrilling Collaborations Aside from the special anniversary merchandise, Lee proudly announces its exhibition of Buddy Lee that

will be collaborating with seven of some of the hottest fashion labels today: READYMADE, NEIGHBORHOOD, N.HOOLYWOOD, MADNESS, GrowthRing & Supply, WIND AND SEA, and FDMTL. Each label tailor designed outfits for Buddy Lee by applying their own killer signature brand style. The first Buddy Lee dressed in all Lee overalls was created in 1920 and displayed as an advertising mascot at the window of the Dayton Company Department store on Nicollet Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Buddy Lee quickly caught the public’s attention and became a hugely successful collector’s item that was hard to collect during the 1920s-60s. Bringing back Buddy Lee through this collaboration with seven different fashion brands at once demonstrates again Lee’s enthusiastic spirit to “never stop” evolving with style and dares for new challenges. Every crossover brings a strong element of style which boldly combines its personal touch to the classic Buddy Lee mascot. From vintage to military, cowboy look to streetwear, Lee is beyond excited to launch this showcase and took the chance to sit down with each of the designers to discuss their concept for this upcoming collaboration. READYMADE: A Japanese upcycling label, best

known for reworking vintage military gear to bags and garments with a dash of contemporary flair. Its renowned Kermit the Frog plush toy made from vintage US-army textile is still an ongoing highly sought-after item by fashionistas. When Yuta Hosokawa was approached to design an outfit for Buddy Lee, this military green overall of its signature Kermit plush quickly sparked as the cute appearance of Buddy Lee held great resemblance. NEIGHBORHOOD: Created by Takizawa Shinsuke

in 1994, NEIGHBORHOOD carries the concept of redefining outdoor, biker and military styles and introducing these elements into daily wear. In this collaboration, Buddy Lee is dressed as Bruce Lee in his signature Tang costume, Kung Fu cap and nunchaku all made of denim. Shinsuke Takizawa’s inspiration behind the costume comes from his love for Hong Kong Kung Fu films. It is his wish to turn this classic yet simple Chinese style costume into something trendy, especially using denim to recreate his favourite nunchaku. N.HOOLYWOOD: Combining Japanese and American archetypes to retro menswear designs, N.HOOLYWOOD takes vintage with a twist of style to rebellious modernity. As a fan of dated work clothes, Daisuke Obana has always been nostalgic towards that era of fashion

ers, adhesive and black tape for a fun workwear effect. This idea arose after he accessorized tape onto some of his old trousers and overalls then being praised by his employees. It was the greatest compliment for a designer that started this idea naturally. MADNESS: MADNESS, founded by Hong Kong artiste Shawn Yue, is an apparel line that utilizes a consistent

meticulous minimalist design approach by using quality materials. In this collaboration, MADNESS’ design features a distressed dungaree made with classic Lee denim, adorned with the signature open-top jean buttons and wide suspenders. The outstanding front and side pockets add chicness to Buddy Lee’s entire look. WIND AND SEA: Founded by leading lifestyle creator Takashi Kumagai in 2015, this street-inspired fashion

brand has been constantly collaborating with different fashion brands around the world. Kumagai’s design plays with his bold usage of indigo. A navy hoodie with large black logo across front and back, paired with denim shorts and a cap. The look is highlighted with a yellow Lee bandana to give an extra boost. GRS: GrowthRing & Supply (GRS) is a Hong Kong lifestyle brand that believes in an “Authentic Aesthetic”, a cycle of creating things by hand, and crafting items that humans grow interaction and attachment to. GRS

applies a cultural twist on the east and west that pay attention to details with the usage of fabrics. GRS showcases its famous Sukajan jacket design for Buddy Lee, featuring an image of the Kansas Lee company at the back together with Lee’s 130th anniversary badge. The look is completed with an eye-catching mountain hat and iconic Lee jeans. FDMTL FDMTL is a world-class, Japan made brand by Gaku Tsuyoshi. For over 50 years, from concept to creation, patchwork plays a starring role in FDMTL’s design along with indigo and faded colours to create an eye-catching pop onto classic styles. For this crossover, FDMTL applies its experience with denim by styling Buddy Lee in

a pair of dark bottoms, a ragged out jacket and newsboy cap that contrasts perfectly without stealing the attenwhich closely aligns with Lee’s design concept, further tion of each other. explaining why N.HOOLYWOOD has been a long-term Each Buddy Lee will be displayed in their own special window cabinet for fans to get the closest view of each collaborator with Lee during the last 19 years.
