CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines -- On a bright Saturday morning, students and faculty members of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan took to the streets the call to save and protect Mother Earth, saying there’s no Planet B. “The climate is changing, why can’t we?” one placard stated as the university students and formators marched from the XU Main Campus to the sidewalk along Corrales Avenue. Other placards said “Raise your voice, not the sea level,” “Nature needs you, what will you do?” and “You do note climate change.” The climate strikes all over the world urge public and private sectors to contribute to the attainment of climate justice and the creation of policies and programs to curb climate change. The XU climate strike was spearheaded by the XU National Service Training Program, made up of three components, namely, Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), Civic Welfare Training Service (CW TS), and Literac y Training Service (LTS). VILLANUEVA, Misamis Oriental--A 25-bed district hospital will soon rise in this town as second district Rep. Juliette T. Uy filed House Bill 3462 at the House of Representatives. Uy said HB 3462 seeks to establish the Northern Mindanao District Hospital of Villanueva, which will be under the supervision of the Department of Health (DOH).

In her explanatory note, Uy said that the town of Villanueva is widely consideredas the growing industrial hub in the province of Misamis Oriental. Not only in Misamis Oriental, she pointed out, but even in Northern Mindanao as it has 16 medium to large scale industries. Anti-smoking, liquor ban arrests rise in Davao City By CHE PALICTE PNA

DAVAO CITY -- The city government’s Vices Regulation Unit (VRU) reported on Wednesday an increase in the number of apprehensions for violations of the anti-smoking ordinance and the liquor ban in the first half of the year. Head of the VRU, Dr. Ashley Lopez, said the

number of apprehensions reached 9,116 from January to August, which resulted in fines amounting to PHP5.3 million. In comparison, the VRU only netted 6,302 apprehensions in the same period last year. Lopez said they would propose stiffer penalties against smoking and liquor See BAN, page 11

Oro government to provide free drug testing for indigent CAGAYAN de Oro City-Indigent residents can soon avail of free drug testing after the City Council enacted a law establishing the Cagayan de Oro City Screening Drug Testing Laboratory at the City Health Office, a report reaching the Mindanao Daily News Online said Monday. The purpose of the ordinance is for the city to provide its constituency with quality drug testing laboratory services, ensuring accurate and improved laboratory diagnostic aid, the report said. Under the law, the drug testing lab shall be organized to provide quality, effective and efficient laboratory services. I am no longer watching any basketball game

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for the salvation of all who believe…” (Romans 1:16, the Holy Bible). -oooI AM NO LONGER WATCHING ANY BASKETBALL GAME: At the crucial moments of the fight last Sunday, September 29, 2019, at the UAAP (or the University Athletic Association of the Philippines) between the UP Fighting Maroons and the Ateneo Blue Eagles, my daughter, lawyer Luisa Mauricio, tried very hard to bulldoze me into watching the game with her although I repeatedly told her I am no longer

interested to even just throw one fleeting glimpse at the TV set. Luisa and I, and my wife (former Judge Angelina Mauricio), are all products of the University of the Philippines, but, for quite some time now, I lost interest in any basketball game, not only at the UAAP, but in all other leagues as well. The reason? The evidence is quite compelling and could no longer be simply brushed under the rug, that the primary reason why there are sports competitions in the first place---to instill in the hearts, minds, and souls, and character, of all athletes gentlemanly behavior and good man-

ners and right conduct before, during, and after each game---has ceased to be the concern of the athletes, the institutions they represent, and even their alumni. -oooDISBAND THE LEAGUES: I have long voiced out this kind of a sentiment against the UAAP and other sports competitions. This was, for example, what I wrote on September 23, 2014, here in this very same column: “I said it before, and I will say it again: we should immediately disband the existing collegiate basketball associations among colleges and universities in Metro Manila, notably the National College Athletic Association

(NCAA) and the… UAAP. “The NCAA and UAAP games are meant to develop sportsmanship, camaraderie, and turn students into well-rounded citizens. Yet, it is clear that these games have become fertile training grounds for selfishness and self-glorification, where victory should be achieved at all cost. Practical training in chastity THIS concern should never be taken for granted. This is actually a much bigger concern than what we have in the areas of politics, social life, business or the now in-thing of climate change, ecology and other environmental issues. And the simple reason is that this concern is fundamental in our life. This virtue figures prominently in our capacity to love on which all the other aspects of our lives depend on. It is, first of all, a fruit of real love that comes from God and the seed that gives life to real love also. If that capacity to love is compromised, either openly or subtly, then we can be brilliant, productive and impressive in the other aspects but we would still miss the point, we would

still miss the real goal. Moreover, we would likely create a bigger mess the more powerful we are in the other aspects that are not driven or inspired by real love. We can enter into the world of illusions, if not delusion, that can be so grave that we may not even realize it. And that’s because if we do not have real love, we can only have the alternative of self-love which is a sweet poison. Plainly put, chastity is putting our body and everything in it in the dynamic of true love that has God as the source, the pattern, the energy, and the end. Yes, it involves the proper regulation of our thoughts, desires, emotions and passions, all the way to the level of the hormones. Sad to say, this virtue is

now so ignored, misunderstood and badly lived that some people are actually wondering if it is still possible to live it. Practically all of us have suffered the erratic ways of our flesh. But obviously, chastity is always possible and practicable. But yes, we cannot deny that it involves a lot of effort and self-discipline. Aside from the spiritual and supernatural means that should always be given priority in our effort to develop this virtue, we have to undertake a rigorous practical training to be chaste. We should not be naive not to acknowledge that we carry within ourselves our first formidable enemy in this struggle for chastity. It’s our body itself that is ruled by strong biological constituents like hormones,

instincts, temperaments, etc. that can go wild if not properly handled. We need to be keenly aware of them, of how they work, etc., so that we would know how to direct them to the dynamic of real love. The ideal state should be that we have a strong dominion over these biological elements. Of course, we cannot be in complete control of these things, but at least we are doing something to dominate them. We have to be careful with the food we eat, the things we see and handle that can trigger See TRAINING, page 11

But when the young North Korean leader learned that the prisoner was not a soldier but the head of an orphanage caring for young children, he decided to let him live. COTABATO CITY -- Police authorities in Magpet, North Cotabato have warned the public against a modus operandi of a group of persons who dupe homeowners by acting as government agents checking on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanks. Capt. Rolando Dillera Jr., Magpet town police chief, aired the warning Thursday over a radio station here. Dillera said his office has received several complaints from residents about unidentified men, some identifying themselves as representatives of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) going house-to-house and checking on leaked LPG tanks. At the same time, the group sells LPG anti-leakage device or LPG safety devices. “These people are selling LPG regulators and preying mostly on senior citizens they can easily dupe,” Dillera said. “Worse, some are thieves who rob homeowners while the LPG regulator is being demonstrated or presented to them,” he added, implying the group belonged to a syndicate who prey on residents in far-flung communities. Dillera said the alleged LPG regulator is sold to h o m e ow n e r s b e t w e e n PHP2,000 to PHP11,000 each while its actual price is only PHP500 or less. “Immediately report to us if you see people roaming around the village and selling these kinds of products,” Dillera told the people of Magpet. There are children who have never been been more than a few seconds away from the answers to their questions with everything just a quick search away. They are able to teach themselves about any topic they are interested

in without even leaving their bedroom. They are digital natives as comfortable using apps as their grandparents were flipping pages. The students in our schools today are intelligent, independent and extremely capable. They are skilled with technology and comfortable with global and intercultural communication. We can expect that future generations are going to have even more experience in these areas.

THE Mindanao Cup set at the Tiongko Field in Davao City on Oct. 22-25, will be the start of the revival of the grassroots development of the beautiful game here in Mindanao. Organized by the local FA and the supported by the Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) under Ricky Yanson Jr., the tournament is for players born 2008-2009. The tournament is envisioned by Yanson to discover young talents to play in the different national teams in the future. The Mindanao Cup is the spill over of the five-year grassroots effort of Yanson in Negros Occidental, the NOFA Cup. The tournament held every summer at the Sta. Maria fields Talisay City since 2014, has become a showcase of young talents nationwide.

It has been a long time and I can’t even remember it now. No wonder why our age group teams are whipping boys in any international tournaments abroad. The 17 local football associations affiliated with the PFF are excited about this tournament and most of them are expected to send teams to the weeklong competition. Football is very popular in Mindanao. Just watch the different football festivals organized by local FA and you can just ask the question where do these players come from.

How do I see our education today?

Filipinos believed that education is the best investment. Many Filipinos uphold their dreams and aspirations through education. In fact, we labeled education as the only solution for poverty. Personally, I am impressed on how our government reach out to every Filipino family the importance of education and support to foster education in all means. Aside from having the biggest chunk in the national budget, many programs of other government agencies are directly or indirectly help the education sector like DSWD for 4P’s. In addi-

tion, in terms of transparency and accountability, the Department of Education creates and establishes many mechanisms to maintain or improve the credibility and authenticity of every data to be reported. We commonly heard many complaints especially of the implementation of the K to 12 curriculum- the insufficiency of learning resources, teachers, buildings, etc. But such insufficiency of learning resources is not new to us. If we look back in the history of Philippine education, such issues were the same but they were able to produce quality graduates. Why? Maybe because of commitment and perseverance of the teachers.

Sometimes attitude counts in making strategy to make things easy and enjoyable despite of the limited resources. Education today calls for every teacher to be accountable for the learners and school performance. It is actually very difficult to achieved 0 drop-out and repetition rate since our learners today have different learning needs and styles. The teacher nowadays should strengthen his/her connection to the family of every learner especially the SARDO. In the learning sessions, the teacher must consider formative assessment to analyze the performance of the learner. It is very important that

molding our learners to be proficient needs assessment for learning to scaffold his/ her understanding about the lesson. More so, strengthen home visitation, remediation and parent-consultation practices to monitor and give feedback to the concerned parents about the performance of the learner. DAVAO CITY--The city government of Mati in Davao Oriental and the Philippine Eagle Foundation Inc. (PEF) revisited an agreement for the protection of Philippine eagles that inhabit the vast Mt. Hamiguitan Range bordering Mati and the towns of San Isidro and Governor Generoso. In a meeting at the office of Mayor Michelle Rabat on Wednesday, the mayor expressed her willingness to resume the agreement with PEF, which was stopped back in 2016, after a shooting incident that led to the death of eagle Pamana in August 2015. The meeting aims to revisit and renew the previous contract based on the activities conducted by PEF, and the reactivation of the Philippine Eagle Sanctuary Management Council (PESMC). MAKATI CITY - BPI President and Chief Executive Officer Cezar P. Consing said contributors to economic growth are changing just as the inflation rate eases and stabilizes to manageable levels. Investments may now play a bigger role in the Philippines’ economy replacing consumer-led growth, says Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) President and Chief Executive Officer Cezar P. Consing. In a recent gathering of finance and treasury leaders, the leader of the country’s first and top bank said the contributors to economic growth are changing just as the inflation rate eases and stabilizes to manageable levels. “For the last two to three decades, the common theme was that growth is consumption-led. That is not true anymore. Investment is now a growth factor,” Consing said during the 11th Corporate Treasury and CFO Summit held in the Philippines last August.

The BPI official noted that investments in the transportation and communications sector have been growing by 7 to 8 percent year-on-year. “That growth is closer to the ASEAN average. So it’s good to see the growth rate in things that matter. This would mean transportation, communication, and everything that speaks of investment,” he added. Consing’s view supports that of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Benjamin Diokno, who said the Philippines is now in a “Goldilocks economy, with the right mix of low inflation and high economic growth.” “We’re in a nice place right now. We are in a Goldilocks economy; not too cold, not too hot. We’re growing at 6 percent, inflation is within the target of 3 percent. In fact, this year, our projection is at 2.7 percent. The gross international reserve (GIR), our buffer from any threat to the peso, is 7.5 months of our import requirements,” the BSP chief said. Of this, Consing said,

Ano nga ba ang Compter Games? Nakakabuti kaya ito sa lahat ng kabataan? Ang computer ay isag makina o electronic device na ginagawa para mapabilis ang Gawain tulad ng pagkokompyut at paghahanap ng impormasyon o ideya. It ay tumatanggap, nagpoproseso at nagbibigay o naglalabas ng mga datos sa pamamagitan ng tinatawag na program. Kasalukuyang may maraming naitutulong ang teknolohiyang ito sa ating pang araw-araw na pamumuhay. Sa ngayon karaniwang nasa isang pamilya ang mag-kakaroon ng computer para sa pag-aaral ng kanilang mga anak at komunikasyn nila sa mahal nila sa buhay na nasa ibang bansa. Sa teknolohiyang ito, naging makapangyarihan din ito sa pamamagitan ng pagbilis ng pagkalat ng mga ibat-ibang impormasyon maganda man o hindi, nakakabuti man o nakakasama, at may katutuhanan man o wala.

Our mind and heart should be filled with good thoughts, desires and images so that our senses, our emotions and feelings would be put at ease and in condition to love, to think of God and of the others, to think of what we can do for them. Davao cops urge whipping victims to press charges By CHE PALICTE

DAVAO CITY -- Police on Wednesday called on the victims of a whip-wielding gang to file formal charges, following the emergence of social media photos from several persons who suffered lashes at the hands of the motorcycle-riding suspects. Captain Nolan Tagsip, Davao City Police Office (DCPO) spokesperson, said a victim has already filed a complaint at the Sasa Police Station. Tagsip said several incidents posted on social media showed that the victims had sustained lashes and other injuries in different parts of their bodies after being whipped by the so-called “Davao Bunal (whip) Gang”. He said more complainants can “shed light on the incident and we can share

Initial investigation showed that the perpetrators belong to a gang whose members are at war with other street groups, he said. Tagsip said that Col.
