THE NOBLE HEART AND MIND In times of pandemic, wars, natural disasters and again quickly dwindling hopes of many people around me (expats AND Filipinos), I still feel inspired to put the cart before the horse. Maybe at the end of this piece I’ll tread the footsteps of other columnists and commentators. So be it! Pride comes before a fall - but never magnanimity. The dictionary defines magnanimity as in greatness of mind and generosity of heart especially in forgiveness. Oftentimes, Filipinos are really magnanimous people. Especially nowadays, Filipinos seem to have the quality of being high souled, rising above pettiness or meanness and the generosity in overlooking injury or insult. The late Harry Emerson Fosdick, a famous Protestant teacher wrote: “No man ever saved anybody, or served any great or left any endur-

ing impression, who was not willing to forget indignities, and bear no grudges. The world’s saviours have all, in one way and another, loved their enemies and done them good!” Magnanimity, applied to relations between nations and/or people, transforms hostility into helpfulness. The Philippine nation faces again a lot of trials during this pandemic. These trials will prove the strengths of the Filipino people. But, let’s be honest: not every tragedy unites a nation. What quality in human character do you consider the most admirable of all? How about tolerance toward another’s viewpoint without smugness? How about refusal to judge another’s actions or motives without first knowing what lies behind them? U.S. writer Clearance W. Hall said: “Magnanim-

Socialise It’s important to not forget to socialise! Just because you’re locked away quarantining doesn’t mean that you can’t use technology to socialise with coworkers, friends and family. Make sure you spend a few hours each day either on the phone or on video chat. Not only is this beneficial for your mental health, but it’ll also help you not to feel so alone through this ordeal. Ultimately, quarantining in a hotel room for an extended period of time will be a challenge, so make sure you try to stay busy and remain positive! VALENCIA CITY, BUKIDNON – Eyed in aiding farmers to command better prices for their produce, a Consultation Meeting was staged with the agriculture department of Northern Mindanao (DA-10) on October 21. The congressional, provincial and municipal governments of Bukidnon, corn clusters and feed millers convened, following after 3rd district Bukidnon Representative, Manuel F. Zubiri, sought help from DA-10 for a discussion focusing on the current buying price of yellow corn and ensure its long-term stable market prices. Being the second top producing province across the country, Bukidnon has posted a production of 714,673 metric tons (MT) of yellow corn last year, based on Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data. In mid-September of this year, average farm gate buying price for yellow corn range from P9.80-10.50 in Bukidnon, while it is pegged at P12.5016.00 for feed millers and processors buying across Region 10. Carlota S. Madriaga, regional technical director for operations of DA-10 emphasized, the engagement aims to come up with a unified and

harmonized action plan for Northern Mindanao’s corn industry, especially in Bukidnon. Basically, also noting the agency’s measures to help farmers demand better prices for their corn harvest. “As early as 2018, we have directly linked the Mantibugao Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Farmer’s Cooperative (MARBFC) of Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon with Pilmico Foods, Corp. to serve a portion of said company’s requirements for animal feeds. As part of their social responsibility, it is also their way of helping farmers through their inclusive corn sourcing project,” Madriaga reported. Currently, the Cooperative has a target purchase order with Pilmico, a minimum of 250 MT at P15.00 per kilo. In a bid to open marketing support opportunities for more Bukidnon corn farmers, Madriaga noted, the ‘big brother-small brother’ marketing strategy is also in place. “As the big brother, MARBFC acts as a consolidator, buying the produce of its members and other cooperatives, even as far as the towns of Kibawe and Kadingilan, to assist small corn farmers in selling their harvest to Pilmico, where the Cooperative buys

Beside Pilmico, feed millers and processors like CJ Philippines, San Miguel Foods, Corp. and Anakciano Feedmill were also in attendance, to listen the concerns from the different corn clusters and further committed to escalate these to their respective managements. In response, they recommended to intensify farmers’ adoption of good agricultural practices to ensure quantity and quality production of corn at the same time urged corn clusters to complete all the necessary documents for them

to be officially recognized as a legal entity, which could translate to greater marketing prospects. “We have a line-up of requests for funding under Bayanihan 1 and 2 and we want, that whatever we have discussed will be materialized and eventually, be allocated with funds, especially on the corn clusters’ clamor for postharvest facilities,” Carlene C. Collado, regional executive director of DA-10 remarked. BDO regains momentum in 3Q 2020 BDO Unibank, Inc. (BDO) posted P12.3 billion in net income in the 3Q 2020 despite the continuing impact of the pandemic. This brings earnings for the first nine months of the year to P16.6 billion, a decline of 48% from the same period last year, due to the upfront provisions booked in 2Q 2020 in anticipation of potential delinquencies due to the pandemic. Despite BDO’s promising results, the Bank recognizes that the pandemic difficulties still lie ahead. The delinquency problem on loans have not yet peaked, interest rate caps on credit cards will be instituted soon and there are added costs in doing business as a result of necessary precautions inherent in the Bank’s operations. All of these and more are seen to put pressure on the Bank’s earnings. Loans rose at a more tempered 6 per cent to P2.2 trillion, driven by corporate

and consumer accounts. The Bank remained supportive of its borrowing clients, ensuring continued access to their credit facilities to help them manage their funding requirements during these challenging times, notwithstanding loan payment deferments under Bayanihan I and II. Asset quality remained stable, with gross non-performing loans (NPL) ratio at 1.97 per cent. Meanwhile, the NPL cover settled at 138 per cent. What has b e come ‘normal’? The lockdowns, quarantines, mask, face shield, washing hands, legal ages to go outside, minimize social activities, social distancing and so on. And one thing we can do ‘bout these things is to embrace and be flexible to adapt on it. School year has started and a lot of teachers doing their best out of the best to let their students learn and continue its studies amidst pandemic. Amidst this new normal we are facing. We involved and be flexible about it. We plan for a best alternative way for learning and to learn. We produce our works and distribute it to students. Schooling in new normal is not easy. ‘Home’ school is not easy. A lot of modules to be answered, needs a lot of focus understanding about each of its lesson. As a teacher we produced lots of easy lesson for them to un-

derstand it easily, giving activities that are easy to cope up and do. As we go through day by day a lot of bad news, bad feedbacks we received. But the only thing comes in the mind of the teachers is that ‘LABAN LANG’. As teachers, we stayed calm, flexible and motivated to still go through and give all of our best to our students who are eager to continue their studies and do their best also. Covid-19 is no joke, new normal is no joke. But we have something to do about it. We can fight it! We are humans and we have a lot of things we can do. We need to stay at home, spent the days with our family, we need to stay healthy so that we can wake up the next day and enjoy it. Students choose to enrolled and teachers choose to teach. We need to be positive; we can do it! We can get through this, TOGETHER!

THE implementation of the K to 12 curriculum is the latest attempt of the government to reform the Philippine educational system. Considering the theory that in every change, there is always a resistance, the implementation of K to 12 curriculum last year was met with some oppositions and negative reactions. These adverse reactions came from different sectors of society including even from the academe. The enabling law of the K to 12 curriculum is Republic Act 10533 which is commonly known as “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013”, and because of this law, the government through the Department of Education has to implement the program. What makes the law controversial and seems to be unwelcome particularly to the parents is that it provides two additional years in the secondary education which is known

Being isolated causes much inconvenience, hassle and difficulty for the patients especially if they are not ready. It will also worry the family members. Contact Tracing for COVID-19 Around 4 PM on August 17, 2020 a DOH vehicle came to our school and took us to a hotel for quarantine. There were seven (7) of us and one or two were hesitant to go for reasons I do not know. Most of the teachers take along carefully selected items to survive the unexpected except me. I was able to change clothes after three (3) days. We were disconnected from the outside world for several days. We cannot see each other because we were placed in a room individually. Anxiety related to uncertainties, fear of stigmatization as well as challenges in communication are stressors and something very hard for us. The use of technology has shown to be particularly useful to enhance communication between us and to our heads in the Division of Cagayan de Oro City. Being alone in a room brought

about feelings of loneliness and boredom to us, the sense that we were secluded from the rest of the world for several days. Some of us verbalized that they relieved their boredom by watching television, video calls. While some plan to escape back door. With no visitors allowed, we were also eager to reunite with our family. Anxiety related to uncertainties and Fear of discrimination We were shocked for unknown source of covid. All of us were anxious to know the results of our swab tests, and the possible events that would follow if we were to be diagnosed to have COVID-19. For us who plan to be discharged home and to be quarantined for 14 days, we were worried about the living arrangements. How are we going to isolate ourselves from our families in order to keep our families safe? What changes needed to be made before we return home? Similar concerns were raised by our family members as well. When we were discharged we were required to be quarantined and were escorted home by Barangay Health Emergency Response Team (BHERT). This is to ensure we do not come into contact with the public. Unfortunately, this may be likened to a criminal being escorted to prison.
