CdeO is 7th Most Competitive Highly Urbanized City in PH CAGAYAN de Oro has been ranked as the 7th Most Competitive City in the Philippines in the Highly Urbanized City Category. The latest rankings were announced during the 7th Regional Competitiveness Summit held 24 October 2019, at the Reception Hall, Philippine International Convention Center. The Department of Trade

and Industry, through its Competitiveness Bureau recognized LGUs with exemplary performance in the four pillars of the index – Economic Dynamism, Government Efficiency, Infrastructure and Resiliency. Cagayan de Oro ranked #2 in Resiliency, #6 in Government Efficiency and #10 in Infrastructure and Economic Dynamism.

A total of 1,518 LGUs participated in this initiative and awards were given to LGUs in four categories: 3rd to 6th Class Municipalities, 1st to 2nd Class Municipalities, Component Cities, and Highly Urbanized Cities. Awards for the Most Competitive Province and Most Improved City and Municipality will also be conferred this year. (rmb)

DAVAO C IT Y - - The PHP120-million Philippine Genome Center Mindanao Satellite Facility (PGC-MSF) built in this city is expected to be operational within the year. Dr. Anthony Sales, regional director of the Department of Science and Technology in Region 11 (DOST 11), in a press briefing Wednesday, said that the facility is housed at the UP Mindanao compound in Bago Oshiro’s Research, Extension and Development building. “The fund allocation covers the cost of the build-

ing and state-of-the-art equipment,” he said. Sales said the facility will cover research and development and also extends services to prospective clients, with focus on applications for agriculture and biodiversity conservation. “With Mindanao as the food basket of the country, we want to assess problems affecting agriculture and other related areas particularly on diseases,” he said. 3 suspects in cop slay arrested after six years of hiding By DIVINA M. SUSON Correspondent

ILIGAN CITY -- The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CDIG) turned over to court on Tuesday, October 22, three suspects who killed a policeman and attempted to kill his companion, after they were arrested early morning on Monday (October 21) in Barangay Cadayonan, Munai town, in Lanao del Norte. The law enforcement operation was conducted jointly with the Special Action Force based in Iligan City. Police Captain Jerome Villegas, head of CIDG Lanao del Norte Provincial Field Unit, said the suspects identified as Alnor Panontongan, 35; Kairodin Mutto, 35; and Abdul Razzaq Mutto, 26, all residents of Munai, were arrested by virtue of arrest warrant issued by Judge Ali Balindong of Regional Trial Court Branch 6, Iligan City. The suspects are also also bringing another name: Alnor Panontongan as Komine Malo Panontongan, Kairodin Mutto as Norodin Baunto Mutto and Abdul Razzaq Mutto as Mahid Baunto Mutto, as indicated in the arrest warrant. Barbers eyes probe on cocaine bricks recovered in PH By ALEXANDER LOPEZ

SURIGAO CITY – The circumstances behind the recovery of cocaine in bricks in different parts of the country must be investigated, Surigao del Norte 2nd District Rep. Robert Ace S. Barbers said Wednesday. Some survey-based studies have reported a link between video game use and poor achievement in school. But correlation doesn’t prove causation. Kids who struggle in school may be more likely to seek out video games as a distraction. A recent experimental study helps address this ambiguity. Robert Weis and Brittany Cerankosky selected a group of boys who didn’t own video games (Weis and Cerankosky 2010). Then each boy was randomly assigned to one of

two conditions: 1) The “video games now” group got their systems immediately and 2) The “video games later” group didn’t receive their systems until months later—after the end of the study. There is a large body of evidence which suggests that violent video games lead to increased aggression and even violence. There is some mixed evidence on the psychological effects of video game violence, but Craig Anderson (2003) offers overall implications that can be reached by looking at all studies that relate video games to risk factors. Some studies

have yielded non-significant [sic] video game effects, just as some smoking studies failed to find a significant link to lung cancer. But when one combines all relevant empirical studies using meta-analytic techniques, five separate effects emerge with considerable consistency. Violent video games are significantly associated with: increased aggressive behaviour, thoughts, and affect; increased physiological arousal; and decreased prosocial (helping) behaviour. (Anderson, 2003, Myths and Facts, para. 1). Thus, as teachers, we

should always remind our pupils on the ill effects on the usage of videogames when it comes to their studies. They should be always reminded that it may inflict disadvantages as well as it has advantages. And that they should be extra careful on their so doings when using and playing these videogames. As parents as well, we should be a keen observer and guide to our children as playing videogames may contain and influence ill effects, most specifically on the psychology of the pupils.

Sekolah Indonesia Davao conducted a Workshop on Mind Map Based Learning and the Role of Edutech in the Development of Student’s Character INDONESIAN School of Davao conducted a two-day Workshop on Strategy for Implementing the 2013 Curriculum through Mind Map Based Learning and the Role of Edutech in the Development of Student’s Character on October 11-12, 2019 at the House of Indonesia. Bringing Ir. Drs. Djohan Yoga, M.Sc., MoT., Ph.D. a Singapore based Licensed instructor of Mind Map International also a Licensed Trainer of iMindMap Software of Mind Mapping for Asia as the resource speaker and Dr. Lili Nurlaili, M.Ed, the Indonesian Education and Culture Attaché in the Indonesian Embassy, Manila. The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture has implemented the Curriculum 2013 (K-13) in replaced of the previous Education Unit (KTSP). Curriculum 2013 is characterized by three assessment aspects: cognitive, affective and

psychomotor. The new curriculum is distinct from the previous one because of its character education, integration of subjects and the lesson delivery in thematic topics. In School Year 2017/2018, the curriculum was implemented in Sekolah Indonesia Davao in Grades I, IV, VII and X. Then on the following year in Grades I, II, IV, V, VII, VIII, X and XI. This school year, the K-13 curriculum is being implemented in all grades and in all levels. Drs. H. Agus, M.Pd., principal of the Sekolah Indonesia Davao reported that the participants of the workshop are all the faculty and staff of the school. The workshop was officially opened by the Hon. Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia, Davao City, Hon. Dicky Fabrian. In his remarks, he said that teachers are the spearheads of education, therefore teachers must keep

on practicing and learning to sharpen the competencies. On the other hand, Mr. Djohan Yoga said that nowadays education is developed more on neuroscience and information technology wherein learnings using mind map is one of the answers of education in the future.

On the second day, Dr. Lili Nurlaili, M.Ed. talked about the Role of Edutech in the Student’s Character Development. She said that character has tight relation with the center brain. Human and technology are harmonized with new possibilities. Therefore, technology must be used by teachers in

learning. The participants were enthusiastically listening and eagerly tried and applied the licensed software given and integrated all the knowledge and learnings they got from the 2-day workshop. The teachers are now equipped with enough knowledge in teaching the new

MUSIC hath charm, they say. And its charm is so indescribable it defies reason and rhyme. It can mesmerize us and can bring us to places, moments and conditions that are way beyond what our imagination can provide. It can take us into flights to fantasy land or to heaven itself. And to think that it is at bottom composed only of a few basic musical notes! It’s truly amazing that with just a few notes, we can create a practically infinite number of beautiful songs and music, bringing us to a borderless range of feelings and all kinds of considerations! The possible combinations of those notes to produce music are simply numberless. In the same way, it’s indeed also amazing that with only 26 letters in our alphabet we can produce all kinds of words and ideas that can bring us to all kinds of situations, and even to the

very doorstep of eternity itself ! Of course, we know that due to the fact that we are not by nature simply material and biological but also and more importantly, spiritual, we have the power to transcend the limitations of the material things we use. We have the capacity for creativity, productivity and fruitfulness. We can bring these material things to another dimension. It’s good that we give due attention to this fact of life and be left deeply grateful for this reality. Let us be thankful to God, since it is actually he who shares his creativity with us, since we are his image and likeness. Let us be aware of the many possibilities that it provides and that we can take advantage of. In fact, we are supposed to be responsible of taking advantage of these possibilities. A SOJOURNER’S VIEW DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 22 Oct) – A new restaurant cum bar has just opened in Davao City and is located along Dona Vicenta Village, off JP Laurel St. From the corner of Chow King, which is directly in front of Victoria Plaza, one walks just a few meters down the road and immediately sees the sign—THE BAU HAUS. The building’s facade can immediately grab the attention of any architectural student as it has a fascinating style quite unique among the buildings along this street. Just reading the name of the resto, one can easily miss what it refers to. But one has to read it aloud— THEBAU (and the sound of the combined words of course refers to the name of this city) HAUS. Got it? But Bauhaus also has a German meaning. Wikipedia has this explanation of the name: “The Staatliches Bauhaus commonly known as the

The Bau Haus

Bauhaus, was a German art school operational from 1919 to 1933 that combined crafts and the fine arts, and was famous for the approach to design that it publicized and taught. The Bauhaus was founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. The German term Bauhaus—literally “building house”—was understood as meaning ‘School of Building’, but in spite of its name and the fact that its founder was an architect, the Bauhaus did not initially have an architecture department. Nonetheless, it was founded upon the idea of creating a Gesamtkunstwerk (‘total’ work of art’) in which all the arts, including architecture, would eventually be brought together. The Bauhaus style later became one of the most influential currents in modern design, Modernist architecture and art, design, and architectural education. The Bauhaus

movement had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography.” THE BAU HAUS in Davao City certainly lives up to the German Bauhaus for it combines all aspects of the creative arts—architecture, decorative arts, interior design, exotic cuisine, music and will eventually house both a sculptural and visual arts galleries as well as a robotics section. Its total package was conceptualized and executed by one of the few Renaissance man of this city—Jon Traya. Wearing different creative hats—architect, constructor, furniture designer, interior designer, chef, visual artist, farmer and more—Traya dreamt building The Bau Haus a few years ago. He knew he was going to pursue the school of “geometric explorations of conscious-

ness” and the building that houses The Bau Haus is characterized by all kinds of geometric explorations that bring the diners of this resto to a consciousness of their roots and identity. What provoked Traya’s dream was getting a copy of Macario Tiu’s Davao Cuisine—Recipe of the 10 Tribes of Davao City published by PWC Davao. Tiu had gone around the city researching indigenous food preparations from the Islamized groups (Maranaw, Maguindanao, Tausug and others) and those who held on to their indigenous belief system (Blaan, Mandaya, Manobo and others). The book provides information on ingredients used and the process of cooking so Traya went out of his way to find out if the instructions would yield positive results. School and institutional premises are a valuable resource for local communities and are increasingly being used for extended services. Health and safety in a school or institution is about taking a sensible and proportionate approach to ensure the premises provide a healthy and safe place or environment for all who use it, including the school workforce, visitors, students and community as well. IBSH program will guide people and create an environment in which school principals, teaching and nonteaching staff work together collaboratively. Students/pupils should be able to experience a wide range of activities. Health and Safety measures should help them to do this safely, not to stop them. It is important that students/ pupils learn to understand and manage the risks that are a normal part of life. Common sense should be used in assessing and managing the risks of any activity. Health and safety procedures should always be proportionate to the risks of an activity. The term risk assessment and risk management are used to describe the process of thinking about the risks of any activity and the steps taken to counter them. Sensible management of risk does not mean that a separate written risk assessment is required for every activity. School employers should always take a common sense and proportionate approach, remembering that in school risk assessment and risk management are tools to enable students/pupils to undertake activities safely, and not prevent activities from taking place. Some activities, especially those happening away from school, can involve higher levels of risk. If these are annual or infrequent activities, a review of an existing assessment may be all that is needed. If it is a new activity, a specific assessment of significant risks must be carried out. School officials should ensure that the person assigned with the assessment task understands the risks and is familiar with the activity that is planned. Where a risk assessment is carried out the school teacher(s) must record the significant findings of the assessment. However, schools need not carry out a risk assessment every time they undertake an activity that usually forms part of the school day, for example, taking students to a local venue which it frequently visits, such as a swimming pool, park, or place of worship. Any risks of this routine activities should already have been considered when agreeing the school’s general safety and health policies and procedures. A regular check to make sure the precautions remain suitable is all that is required.

For the moment, the resto is not yet accredited as solely serving halal food as pork can be made available if ordered in advance. Sitting comfortably in the uniquely designed furniture, one notices how ingenious is the use of steel for the building’s posts. These not only hold the roof, but serve as lamp posts as soft lights are attached to them. And as this is a green resto, climbing vines are planted to weave their way through the steel posts. As the ceiling gives way to sunshine and light during the day, the plants inside should flourish in the months to come. The handcrafted lights on the ceiling are also one of a kind. A table designed by Traya, which one can see in the offices of the second floor, takes its inspiration from mangroves that seem to support the table top. Traya used to own CALLE 5—a bar cum café along J.P. Laurel St. further up the road. It closed early this year and people wondered where it transferred. It turns out CALLE 5 is at the back of The Bau Haus, separated only by a glass door. It retains its former identity and thus local bands still perform there every night. Eventually this hall of Calle 5—during the day—could serve other purposes, including holding seminars or a culinary workshop for those interested in learning about The Bau Haus’s special cuisine and other dishes. There is more to this building’s complex. There is a second floor above Calle 5 and part of it is a patio that Traya envisions could be for outdoor gigs or even an in-situ sculptural exhibition hall. An airconditioned adjacent room will be the future visual arts gallery. To both sides of this hall are the business offices of Systems and Shelves—Traya’s business firm. Already the entire complex is envisioned to be a center for “Taste Learning Differently” involving the design of collaborative spaces which

aims at “creating a space where imagination is the only limitation.” This Center hopes “to eliminate the gap between thinking and creating through the promotion of experiential learning, designed to accommodate diverse range of activities covering a wide array of inquiry such as Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.” In time, it will build up its Robotics section, making it an educational resource to create a fun and interactive way of learning. In the end Traya’s dream is “to draw inventive and creative individuals by fusing together their natural creativity with technology by providing them a space that serves as outlet of creativity, a highly interactive place where they will be able to practice their critical thinking skills, explore their imagination and come up with solutions to realworld problems.” One is

MDPPA mounts first Road Safety Summit in Davao Davao City –The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association, Inc. (MDPPA), an association of the country’s four major motorcycle manufacturers: Honda Philippines Inc., Kawasaki Motors (Phils) Corp, Suzuki Philippines Inc. and Yamaha Motor Philippines Inc., held its first road safety summit at the TESDA-KorPhil Training Center, Tibungco in Davao City last October 19. The Summit, which MDPPA hopes to eventually expand into an annual nationwide event, has the theme “Reinforcing Philippine Initiatives for Road Safety” and gathered together 500 motorcycle riders, mostly from the Davao region, to discuss national road safety plans. This inaugural Summit is also in response to the growing number of motorcyclerelated road incidents nationwide and the rising call from motorists from regions outside Metro Manila for a summit tackling road safety. MDPPA joined forces with relevant government and non-government organizations such as the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Land Transportation Office (LTO), Philippine National Police – Highway Patrol Group
