BUSINESSMEN from Mindanao are expected to gather in Cagayan de Oro City today (October 20, 2017) in time for the awarding of the Sixth Mindanao Business Leaders and Entreprenuers Awards to be held at the Event Center of Ayala Centrio Mall.

Mr. Dante Sudaria, publisher of Mindanao Daily News, said the recognition was done in partnership with BusinessWeek Mindanao and Veterans Bank to recognize deserving businessmen, business ventures, and government agencies.

Mr. Sudaria said businessmen that made a significant contribution to the development of Mindanao Island in the past years will be properly recognized at 2 p.m. today through the 6th Mindanao Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs (MBLEA).

He said the Mindanao Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs Awards, which was conceptualized six years ago by Mr. Mediante, who is also the incumbent vice president of the Philippine Press Institute, is BusinessWeek Mindanao’s top CSR program which we had dedicated towards trumpeting the vibrancy of the island’s business climate and economic development.

Group lobbies to block return of incinerators

HEALTH Care Without Harm (HCWH) Asia has sought the scrapping of House of Representatives Bill No. 2286 that seeks to repeal the ban on incineration and amend the Philippine Clean Air Act to allow the re-entry of Waste-to-Energy incineration technologies in the country.

In a news release issued Tuesday, HCWH Asia executive director Ramon San Pascual said the burning of bio-medical or infectious medical waste and plastic produces emissions, highly toxic dioxins, and furans that are “powerfully carcinogenic”.

“They are also known

to lead to the impairment of the immune system, the development of the nervous system, the endocrine system and the reproductive functions,” San Pascual said.

Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) coordinator for Asia, Faye Ferrer, likewise said that they are “deeply concerned

about the health and environmental hazards of bringing back incineration technologies, including waste-to-energy facilities.”

“Incineration may be cheap and convenient but the impact its emission makes is heavily inconvenient for human health and the environment,” Ferrer said.

According to the HCWH, the Department of Environ-

ment and Natural Resources (DENR) has cited the “nonimplementation of Republic Act (RA) No. 9003 (Philippine Clean Air Act) as the reason why incineration technologies are needed”.

The group said the DENR is pushing for something that would go against the fundamentals of the Clean Air Act of promoting a viable, clean and healthy air.

“We see that this move

will ultimately take a huge step backwards from securing the well-being of Filipinos and the environment,” San Pascual said.

Marawi remains fragile, uncertain “MARAWI is liberated from the ISIS,” President Rodrigo Duterte made the announcement during a visit to the war torn Islamic City two days ago.

The President was overwhelmed following military reports that two of the most notorious terrorist leaders were killed by the military special forces.

The firefight in Marawi City would be five months come October 23, 2017 after the local terrorist group has laid siege of the city on May 23, 2017. Almost every month, the President visits the war ravage city to provide morale of the state forces who suffered hundreds of killed in action and wounded personnel in action. Duterte even makes an ocular inspection of the city’s “center of conflict” on board military vehicles.

Every time, the President visits the place, the military would subsequently issue statements that the armed conflict would end soon. “In two weeks or in a month’s time, the Marawi armed conflict would end,” the pronouncement sounds familiar. Thus, there were times that the people would

inevitably cast doubt on the military pronouncement anymore.

However, the declaration of President Duterte that the Marawi City is liberated from the ISIS, the dreaded international terrorist group that wrought havoc in Muslim-dominated countries in the Middle East, the story would never be same again.

In fact, the Maranao evacuees in Cagayan De Oro City have expressed hopes that the President’s announcement would really lead to the cessation of hostilities in Marawi City.

According to estimates, there are about 20,000 individual displaced persons (IDP) from Marawi City who have taken refuge in Cagayan De Oro City.

Unlike the IDPs in the

city? There are reports that there are still few remaining ISIS leaders in Marawi City who remained the object of the military manhunt. With the continued presence of the suspected ISIS and the fanatics in Marawi, the timetable for the complete cessation of armed hostilities in the city is certainly reset.

Amid all expectations, it still remains uncertain on when shall the fighting in the city stop.

At the moment, it is still best to hope rather than be cynical about ending the war in Marawi City. It is just unfortunate that the affected “Maranaos” have to stay longer in evacuation centers until Marawi City is totally cleared of the armed terrorists.

Today, the situation in Marawi City remains fragile and uncertain. cities of Marawi and Iligan, who stay in “evacuation centers,” the IDPs in Cagayan De Oro City are reportedly living with their relatives. A barangay official even claimed that about 30 families from Marawi City are living with them. The regional office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has conducted an updated the profile of the evacuees as a basis for the distribution of cash assistance and in kind.

The other day, some evacuees have expressed the hopes that they could return to Marawi City soon. They claimed that their houses were leveled by the government’s incessant bombings of suspected lairs of the terrorists. Nevertheless, the IDPs said that they still have relatives outside Marawi City where they could stay temporarily until they could construct their new houses there.

Amid the hopes and optimism, the nagging question still persists. Will the liberation of Marawi City from the clutches of professed ISIS leaders, end the armed conflict in the

therefore, the end of war cannot as yet been guaranteed by such declaration.

Just recently, the Muslim Imams have a meeting with the city mayor, vice city mayor and some members of the City Council. In that meeting, they will cooperate with the peace process now initiated by the city governments of Marawi and Iligan Cities, as they are peace advocates.

All they need is peace and harmonious relations among Christians and Muslims and Lumads. They told the body about the recruitments of local and foreign terrorists now made by sympathizers and/or members of the Maute terror group to reinforce the retreating terrorists.

They told the city government officials to be vigilant because some members of the Maute terror group

may have already been in Iligan City, anytime they may sow terror to divert the attention of the military and police operations in Marawi City against the Maute terror group. We only pray that it will not happen here in Iligan City.

It will not happen, I believe, because our City Police Director Col. Leony Roy Ga is not complacent, instead, he spared no time in securing Iligan City to the highest degree from Maute terror group.

As a matter of fact, our City Mayor is also making priority the security of Iligan City by providing logistics to the Philippine National Police to answer any call for emergency be it man-made or by nature.

Some may have been criticizing the city government regarding the purchase just recently of six motorcycles for use by the Philippine National Police assigned in Iligan City.

According to one of those who criticized City Mayor Celso Gomera Regencia that it would be better if the money used to purchase motorcycles should be for the repair of traffic lights instead.

He failed to consider that the security of the city at this moment in time is absolutely necessary, more than the traffic lights. Don’t worry man, about that old traffic lights, it will be replaced by modern one, and the funding of which is already included in the 2018 Calendar Year Budget.

The city government of Iligan under the Regencia administration is not privy to the war in Marawi City, which is just a stone throw away. If our leaders are not vigilant or complacent either, a spill-over of that war may have been on our doorstep now.

Thanks be to God that we have City Mayor Celso G. Regencia and City ViceMayor Jemar Vera Cruz that gives priority to the security of the city and by moving forward to total development.
