Sara warns public vs. sale of contact tracing QR code D

AVAO CITY – As the city is set to use a “Quick Response (QR) code” system next month to further improve the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) contact tracing here, Mayor Sara Z. Duterte warned Dabawenyos on the proliferation of online “fixers” who would try to sell fake ones.

In a radio interview Friday, Mayor Sara said the city government is still working on the “Safe Davao QR” website where Dabawenyos can register their personal details for them to be given unique QR code identifiers that may be presented either through printed formats or

mobile devices.

“We have to be careful in dealing with people offering QR codes for sale because these cannot be invented.

We will provide you the link or site for the application or registration. We have not yet given you the date of its implementation yet,” Duterte said.

Registrants, she said, must present a valid government identification card (ID) or a birth certificate.

“The requirements are very basic: all you need to present is a valid government ID and if you don’t possess one, you can present your birth certificate. Again, it is for free,” Duterte said.

Mayor Sara also sought the cooperation of the private sector for the initiative to progress smoothly.

“The QR Code will be mandatory in Davao City

by November. This is one of our moves to hasten the contact tracing. The success of this will be dependent on the support of our offices and establishments because they are required to have all their clients to scan the QR Code and that QR Code will store a 14-day data of that person,” she said.

DAVAO CITY – The Davao City Hall of Justice was placed on a 12-day lockdown beginning Monday until 31 October after 10 employees of the Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MTCC)-Branch 3 were tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) last week.

In a memorandum addressed to all regional trial court (RTC) and MTCC presiding judges dated Oc-

tober 16, Deputy Court Administrator Leo T. Madrazo said he granted the request of RTC Davao Executive Judge Emmanuel C. Carpio for the “physical closure” of all courts in the city to help contain the spread of the highly contagious disease.

She cited an example where a single person who attended a party infected 18 persons.

The DOH-XI Asst. Regional Director reminded the public to observe the

minimum health protocols and standards as the economy is opening up.

“We need to work, we need the economy to grow, we notice the increasing of cases it’s actually the implementation of the minimum health protocols and standards if we follow it by heart we can probably decrease the number of cases,” Dr. Rivera said.

He said the City Health Office suggested the closure of the entire Hall of Justice “in order to decontaminate the entire building,” while Mayor Sara Duterte recommended the use of online transactions or hearings and to have a work-fromhome arrangement during the lockdown period.

Madrazo said the operation of the courts would continue in a work-from-home

arrangement and through the use of videoconferencing technology.

Presiding judges of all courts in the Davao City Hall of Justice are authorized to conduct videoconferencing from their residences for the entire period of the lockdown, he noted.

Citing Administrative Order No. 41-2020, Madrazo said all initiatory pleadings, in both civil and criminal cases, including criminal complaints, information and applications for bail, can be filed electronically through official email addresses.

COVID-19 access on quality education

Now is the time to “think beyond COVID-19” to reimagine education and realize the goal of providing all students with access to quality learning.

This year’s commemoration highlights the critical contribution teachers have made in ensuring that learning continues during the global pandemic, as well as their crucial support to the mental health and wellbeing of students.

Teachers play one of the most crucial roles in our societies. We must ensure their work is appreciated and valued accordingly.

In this crisis, teachers have shown, as they have done so often, great leadership and innovation in ensuring that learning never stops, that no learner is

left behind.

Around the world, they have worked individually and collectively to find solutions and create new learning environments for their students to allow education to continue. Their role advising on school reopening plans and supporting students with the return to school is just as important.

We now need to think beyond COVID-19 and work to build greater resilience in our education systems, so we can respond quickly and effectively to these and other such crises.

Now is the time to reimagine education and achieve our vision of equal access to quality learning for every child and young person.

Farmers’ ingenuity and diligence, key to thrive in the new normal THE onset of the COVID-19 pandemic is unquestionably a trying circumstance.

The crisis compelled everyone to reckon with overwhelming social and economic adversities, paralyzing the livelihood of a great majority.

While most are in limbo, disconcerted and idle in the face of the pandemic, Michael Madale, a 35 year-old farmer beneficiary of the DA-10’s Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program from Salvacion, in Kadingilan, Bukidnon chose to be otherwise.

Michael invests himself in backyard gardening and makes the most out of his family’s yard.

He organically grew several vegetables, root crops and herbs in his lawn, raised goats, pigs, cattle and fish, maximizing his time while going through mandatory quarantine.

“I have been gardening way before the pandemic. However, since we are obliged to undergo the quarantine, then I have more time gardening around the house” Michael remarked.

Michael continuously provides for his family notwithstanding the crisis.

Now, he steadily earns at least P700 a week by selling his organic produce. This year, he estimated to make at least P200k from all his farm products.

“Formerly I worked for an NGO. After years of working I

finally decided to be a fulltime farmer. I realized I can earn more than my salary by farming” Michael shared.

The provider to a family of three, Michael’s life revolved around agriculture, and he has since developed the passion for farming.

“My parents are farmers.

They provided our daily needs and supported our education by planting rice, corn, cassava and banana, and by growing vegetables. Agriculture, especially organic farming, is a personal advocacy for me” Michael averred.

As an Environmental Management graduate, Michael is amenable today’s farmers should be “environmentalist” in their own little way.

He said minimizing the use of synthetic agricultural products and shifting to organic farming will go a long way in protecting the environment.

“As farmers we should farm without compromising the environment. We should provide our family safe and healthy foods, and care for our environment at the same time” he asserted.

Michael and 25 fellow farmers in Barangay Salvacion are members of Nagkahiusang Mag-Uuma Farmers Association.

As officer of the said association, Michael is always in the forefront, being a helping hand in the implementation of SAAD projects in their community.

“We have been receiving agricultural assistance from SAAD since 2018. The program

provided us several interventions for crops and livestock production. SAAD is undeniably a big help to indigent farmers in our place. We are truly indebted to the program” Michael said.

A visionary man, Michael hopes one day he can convert his home-based farm into

an organic farming learning site, allowing him to share his knowledge and passion to other farmers.

Similarly, he and his wife are looking forward to starting a food processing business in the future by utilizing their farm products as raw materials.

“We planned to produce processed peanut and meat products since we are producing the raw materials. For now, we lack the tools we need, but we are not rushing. We wanted to be holistically ready before engaging in the business” Michael accounted.

Coming from a financially challenged family, Michael is convinced that agriculture is the most practical solution to the country’s long-standing battle against poverty.

He stressed, with enough scientific support, agriculture can change the lives of poor farmers.

Moreover, he underscored farmers’ attitude towards government’s assistance are crucial to the attainment of inclusive development in the country.

“With the crisis we are facing, it is about time that farmers like us twist our mindset and think of government assistance not just as dole out but an opportunity to better our lives.

We should value the projects granted to us and foster them to our advantage” he pointed out.

Michael urges farmers like him to stay productive, particularly in this challenging time. He challenged them to maximize idle spaces in their houses to earn extra income, instead of plainly relying on government amelioration.

“While hoping for the pandemic to dwindle, we need to be able to continuously earn for our family. We do not need a huge area to start farming. We can make use of our idle yard and plant anything we can eat and earn from there” Michael asserted.

He believes balance decision and advance thinking are fundamental to a farmer, most especially since the pandemic holds still. He professed being initiative-driven makes the difference in a farmer’s life.

“My mantra is to learn to regret ahead. As farmers we need to be able to foresee what lies ahead. We should be able to scan our horizon and make the best we can today for our tomorrow” Michael advised.

The new normal is indeed overwhelming. But Michael Madale proves a farmer can thrive amidst the pandemic.

As he modelled, toppling the COVID-19 adversities requires nothing more than the ability to capitalize on every existing opportunity – taking full advantage of government assistance and doses of ingenuity and diligence.

MY late grandmother (born 1899!) taught me many things regarding daily life.

I admired her and didn’t care to travel hundreds of miles to her house located in former East Germany just to spend a few hours there. The wall and border which separated Germany into two, aggravated such journeys many times. Still in my mind are innumerable thoughts on how to convent bible sayings into reality as done by my grandmother.

Salt of the earth: People during various activities and occupations. “Black” and “white” meet each other, shake hands (in Corona times surely no more!), smile... . An old woman selling vegetables in the market. She looks tired but her features still show hope and peace... . Young people, walking through a shopping mall - laughing, joking, being happy (in Corona times surely not such a way anymore!) ... . Fishermen at the shore doing their work in sorting

nets...

Salt on earth: Many things can be like that. Not only during mass service in the church. Not only by preaching. Also, these touching hands of my distressed friend, listening to my lonely neighbor; remembering someone, and writing him or her a letter or an email. I join others by helping, working, laughing, playing, singing. I listen to love’s melody.

Salt of the earth: Christian life doesn’t always mean possessions or property.

The Christian life is doing something, it’s collecting one’s thoughts. It’s giving and receiving. It’s a hug or a smile or comforting talk.

Christian life means having as Christian acting people in my surroundings.

Salt on earth: Of course, as we all know: too much salt is also dangerous to our health. But if we plan to live without any salt, we might fail to survive also. Do you know that wars have been waged and nations have

been extinguished because of salt? Salt is more than a simple stabilizer.

Before the refrigerator was invented, salt was a miracle of daily life. Salt made foodstuff keeps well.

So, let’s think about it: if we are part of the earth’s salt, who are we? Do we bring rottenness or do we preserve and keep well our surroundings?

We should be salt on earth as in cleaning, helping, and healing, but not salt, that brings caustic, corroding, and mordant poison in other’s life. Even in times of Covid-19 ...

Stop poverty and ecological degration thru cooperativism

AS the countervailing force against poverty and ecological degradations, power must be put to where it rightfully belongs- with the people. This has become imperative in a Republican State which brandishes that sovereignty lies with the people and all powers emanate from them. The consequences of putting it somewhere else, such as to a dictator during Martial years or to a few elite- has become fatal.

Such is very glaring in the life of the Philippine natural forest which for many years has been exploited and massacred with impunity by a few loggers.

These “berdugos” of the forest ecosystem have raked billions of dollars in connivance with cabal of vested political interest.

They have decimated the 17 million hectares of forest that our country had a century ago down now to half a million hectares. By so doing, they were able to amass so much wealth that catapulted them to wield political power. That these loggers were issued Timber License Agreement as political patronage in exchange for gargantuan amounts that flowed to buy votes on elections (as exposed by Ms. Marites Vitug in her book,

“Power from the Forest”) manifested that contention of drawing their wealth and powers from the forests.

Such has become possible because our indigenous people who have been living sustainably in the forest ecosystem for thousands of years have been rendered powerless.

Today, with the advent of Community-based Forest Management Agreement where the Lumads and the forest dwellers are organized into cooperatives to nurture, conserve and protect the remaining forest, power to have access and control over the remaining forest is now being placed where it rightfully belongs- with the Indigenous Peoples.

Another scenario where stripping local communities of their “power” has become tragic, is shown in the life of our poor farmers. In fact, 4 of 5 farmers especially the young ones are leaving the countryside to work in the urban centers as drivers, janitors or waiters, that now congest the cities.

The poor farmers are rendered powerless by market-driven conventional agriculture. Where in the world can you find farmers tilling the land not their own and using seeds beyond their capacity to sustain? Such is a great social injustice as farmers do not control the mode of production and marketing.

Because of this, everyone is profiting from farming especially the seed growers, chemical companies, landlords, compradors, etc. but never those who do the back-breaking job of land tilling- the poor farmers!

Where does power in agriculture lie? Some contend that it lies with the rich agri-business sector that pursues the dominant market-oriented industrial agriculture. Its drive is to See POVERTY, page 11

Davao reactivates Peace 911 initiative in Paquibato District DAVAO CITY – The city government announced on Sunday the reactivation of the Peace 911 initiative in Paquibato District before the month ends.

In a statement, the city government said the comprehensive peace-building and development initiative will now be handled by its new program action officer Aileen Mabanding, who committed to delivering the vision of the program.

“After some needed adjustments were done, we are once again out to restart the program,” it said.

The implementation of the initiative was temporarily suspended in August after it encountered challenges that warranted an urgent reevaluation of some of its aspects.

The bringing of government services, such as health and nutrition and other services to far-flung

areas of Paquibato District, will also resume.

“With this, we reiterate that the local government is committed to fully deliver the promise of meaningful peace and sustainable development to our indigenous brothers and sisters in Paquibato District,” the statement read.

Bounded on the No., by 016, 015, 014, 011, 010; on the S., by National Road; on the E., by Brgy. Road; and on the West, by 018, 016. Containing an area of Forty Eight Thousand Seven Hundred Twenty (48,720) sq. m., more or less, and presently declared under Tax Declaration No. 001575 of the City Assessor’s Office of Tangub City.”

2.1 The above-described parcel of land is a portion of the land originally owned by Bienvenido Morales who had declared the same in his name in year 1942 per Certification issued by the Office of the City Assessor of Tangub City.

2.2 After the death of the Petitioner’s parents, he and his siblings had extra-judicial partitioned his parent’s estate, including the above-described property, for which the Petitioner has become a co-owner thereof, as evidenced by the Extrajudicial Settlement of Estate dated 13 November

3. The above-described parcel of land, which is a portion of Lot. No. 531-A, had been adjudicated in favor of the conjugal partnership of the Petitioner’s grandparents, the spouses Bienvenido Morales and Paterna Alegarbes, under Cadastal Case No. 9 G.L.R.O Cad. Record No. 1630 pursuant to the Decision of contested lots dated November 28, 1940 per Certification dated November 4, 2019 of Atty.

Marcelino D. Natividad, Jr., Clerk of Court VI of the Honorable Court;

4. However, no decree of registration has been issued yet relative to the above-described parcel of land per Certification dated October 18, 2018 issued Examiner II Blessilda Cabanlong of the Cadastral Decree Section of The Land RRegistration Authority;

5. No title has also been issued to Lot No. 531-Part under Tax Declaration No. 111255 as certified by the Records Officer of the Registry of Deeds for Tangub City per Certification dated November 5, 2019;

6. Petitioner, who is now a co-owner of the above-described property desires to have the metes and bounds of their portion of Lot. No. 531-A, Cad. 271, delineated with particularity, and would like to engage the services of a licensed geodetic engineer to subdivide Lot No. 531-A, Cad. 271;

7. Petitioner does not know of any mortgage or encumbrances affecting the above-described parcel or land, or that any person has any claim or interest therein, legal or equitable possession;

8. That finally, after due notice and hearing, Petitioner prayed for this Honorable Court that an Order be issued authorizing him to survey and subdivide Lot No. 531-A, Cad. 271 through a duly licensed Geodetic Engineering in-order to segregate and delineate the actual metes and bounds of the portion of Lot No. 531-A, as covered by Tax Declaration No. 001575 of the Petitioner’s deceased father.

MANILA – Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez considers the current community quarantine measures as a “perfect balance” in managing the health crisis and reopening of the economy.

MANILA – The Philippine peso ended Friday sideways against the US dollar due partly to record-high foreign exchange reserves of the country while the main equities index slipped after a two-day rally.

The local currency ended the week at 48.625 against the greenback, sideways from its 48.68 close a day ago.

It opened the day at 48.63 and traded between 48.65 and 48.61. The average level for the day stood at 48.634.

Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) chief economist Michael Ricafort attributed the peso’s performance partly to the rise of the country’s gross international reserves (GIR) to USD100.5 billion as of September, which, he said,

“fundamentally provide greater support/cushion/ buffer for the peso especially vs. any speculative attacks”.

Other supporting factors include investors’ wait-andsee stance on the ongoing deliberations for the proposed PHP4.5-trillion 2021 national budget and the government’s decision to further ease quarantine restrictions.

Ricafort said the local unit has appreciated to date by about PHP2.01, or four percent, against the US dollar and forecasts it to improve to between 48.0048.25 in the coming weeks, partly to the seasonal rise of remittance inflows during the holidays.

On the other hand, the Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) shed 0.67 percent, or 39.86 points, to 5,898.47 points.

All Shares also ended the week’s trade on the red

with a drop of 0.10 percent, or 3.71 points, to 3,581.91 points.

It was a balance among the sectoral indices, with half tracking the main index and the other half posting gains.

Holding Firms contracted by 1.48 percent, Services by 0.78 percent, and Financials by 0.37 percent.

On the other hand, Mining and Oil surged by 10.79 percent, Industrial rose by 0.61 percent, and Property up by 0.24 percent.

Volume totaled to 4.89 billion shares amounting to PHP5.64 billion.

Advancers led decliners at 118 to 89 while 46 shares were unchanged.

Ricafort attributed the main equity index’s performance to anxieties on the outcome of the House of Representatives’ fourday special budget session, which ends this Friday, as well as the delay in the discussions on the proposed stimulus package in the US See SLIDES, page 9

SMC rolls out bicycle program for employees, RSA urges motorists to safely share the road with cyclists

S

an Miguel Corporation (SMC) has rolled out a program to prov ide employe es and its extended workforce with bic ycles as an alternative mode of transportation as part of its continuing efforts to ensure safety at workplaces, and provide its workforce convenience amidst travel restrictions across much of the country.

The program enables them to avail of bicycles and safety helmets at almost giveaway prices. A bicycle ranges from P2,000 to P3,000 for high-quality, feature-laden bicycles— which they can then pay for with no interest for 12 months. The bulk of the cost for the bicycles is shouldered by SMC. SMC president Ramon S. Ang said the program was prompted by a surge in demand for bicycles among employees as the company continues to safely bring its employees back to work to continue essential operations.

“While we continuously do mass RT-PCR testing

of all 70,000 employees and extended workforce to ensure safety in our facilities and offices nationwide, and even as we observe strict safety and health protocols, we understand there’s also a need to provide convenience and additional safety to many of our workers, when they go to work,” said SMC president and chief operating Ramon S. Ang. “Right now, our transportation system is still limited, and we see that more of our employees are biking to work. So we thought to provide them new bicycles. We bought an initial 1,500 units for our facilities in different locations. Almost as soon as we offered them, all were taken. We are now waiting for more units to make available to more employees in more areas,” Ang added.

Made available to employees are commuter bicycles, complete with basket, light, drum brakes, for P2,080 and a compact, hardtail mountain bike with front suspension, front and rear disc brakes,

and gearing, for P3,000.

The company said it has also launched a special COVID-19 transportation loan for employees, to further expand their options for alternative modes of transportation.

“With more and more cities putting up bike lanes, and with even our major thoroughfares devoting space for cyclists, biking to work is now a more viable option for many Filipinos.

It lessens your risk for exposure to COVID-19 because you are sociallydistanced and outdoors; it promotes better cardio health, and you don’t need to pay for fares. Just make sure to observe all safety measures and remain alert and careful at all times,” Ang said.

“For motorists, let us all obser ve the proper distance from cyclists. Do not treat them as obstacles on the road. We share the road with them, they are people like you, just trying to get to their destination.

Give way to them, because anyway you are inside a vehicle. Their safety comes first,” he added.

NorMin Economy Task Group tests regional ‘tourism bubble’, talks to major telcos CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Economy Task Group of the Northern Mindanao Task Force for COVID-19 held its 16th Meeting in Pinegrove Mountain Lodge at Dahilayan, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon on 13 October 2020 coupled with video conferencing to test the “tourism bubble” strategy as means to revive local tourism.

The “tourism bubble” concept allows local tourists to experience leisure travel within specified areas. The strategy also recommends the lifting of age restrictions, consequently reinstating family trips. This is seen to boost local tourism, as well as, allowing people breaks, while strictly complying with minimum health protocols such as social distancing and through limited booking slots.

The Task Group also dedicated the virtual conference to discussing digital infrastructure developments in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Major telecommunication operators Globe Telecom, Inc., Smart Communications, Inc., and DITO Telecommunity reported efforts at improving connectivity in the region.

When asked on the company’s stand on the pro-

nouncement of President Duterte during his 2020 State of the Nation Address on improving the services of major telecommunications companies, Mr. James Lopez of Globe Telecom quipped, “We heed the President’s call. We are upgrading our connectivity from 3G to 4G and we’re very excited to see this through by the end of this year.”

Lopez explained that one solution to the connectivity problem is to put in place more cell sites, catering to the increasing number of internet users nationwide.

Telecommunication service providers face challenges in the approval of cell site construction, an area that the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is reviewing to fast-track the permitting process.

Smart Communications, Inc. representative, Mr. Anthony Teloren reported that Misamis Oriental has 98 percent LTE coverage per Smart cell site.

Both Smart and Globe received the green light from local government units in the region to roll out new cell sites in the last quarter of the year to 2021.

As for its part, newcomer DITO Telecommunity expressed concern over the rising cases of personas

SHELL’S 2ND VIRTUAL ART INTERACT SPOTLIGHTS MINDANAO Creating stories of hope in isolation

MINDANAO is hailed for its abundant natural resources and breathtaking landscapes. But beyond its pristine beaches and lush mountains is a burgeoning community of creatives who are injecting their unique Mindanaoan identity into art and using it as a force for good. As the country continues to grapple with COVID-19, Mindanaoan artists are stepping up to create stories of hope while in isolation.

Following the theme of “HOPE IN OUR ART,” Pilipinas Shell’s 53rd National Students Art Competition (NSAC) held the second leg of Virtual Art Interact last October 17, in collaboration with creative collective Fringe Manila. Virtual Art Interact is also a platform where creatives can share their insights about their profession for the next generation.

While the pilot event focused on the Luzon art scene, this recent forum put the spotlight on the growing community of creators in Mindanao.

Since NSAC’s inception, Shell has acknowledged the vital role of visual artists, illustrators, sculptors, and other imaginative talents in shaping the youth and country’s future—especially now.

“Through NSAC, we pledge our support to keep artists and art institutions alive.

We want to amplify the youth’s voices, and continue the conversation on art’s importance,” said Sankie Simbulan, Country Social Performance and Investment Manager of Pilipinas Shell.

Simbulan continued, “The ethnic and cultural diversity of Mindanao and its rich history have given birth to a young generation of artists whose voices need to spread and be heard throughout the Philippines.”

added, “This is a great opportunity to share stories from Mindanao.

It’s important to be inclusive, especially for platforms like this, so that we can showcase the diversity of what’s happening in the Philippines.”

Having survived many conflicts and calamities, Mindanao has proven itself to be a region of resilience— with artists at the helm of inspiring hope that propels the community forward.

Through his projects with Mindanao local governments, Zabala has been championing a fresh perspective of the region that does not let its past define its future.

“At work, our goal is to recreate Mindanao’s image using art. For example, we created a campaign called ‘Zoom in Zamboanga City’ that is inspired by our rich history, nature, tourist spots, native patterns, and more,” Zabala explained.

Being no strangers to crises, Zabala and fellow Mindaoan artists immediately heeded the call to once again inspire hope and courage

as COVID struck the country. He shared, “The pandemic is a challenge for everyone. People have lost jobs, families have gone hungry, and mental health is affected.

As public servants and artists, our work should never stop. We have since created several campaigns that promote generosity and kindness in the community.”

Zabala, who did a live demonstration of digital illustration during the event, also discussed the many themes present in today’s art. “There are so many stories now about struggles and difficulties, both personal and in our country [Ang daming stories ngayon tungkol sa struggle]. As creatives, we use art to express our emotions and what we are going through.”

Zabala also pointed out one essential, if often overlooked, role that artists perform during crisis: “We also act as historians who visually piece together this moment in time—including all the contemplation and uncertainty it holds.

When we look back on this period someday, art will help us make sense

of it.”

Isko Andrade, a former contestant and three-time winner of the NSAC, shared how he overcame the more discouraging moments during the pandemic.

“COVID-19 has affected my career as an artist because of cancelled shows and exhibits, but I choose not to dwell on the negative side [Maraming nag-iba since nagka-COVID. Na-affect yung career ko as an artist kasi madaming cancelled shows at exhibits, pero di lang ako tumitingin sa mga negative]. “‘The pandemic has given me time to focus on myself, my craft, and taught me to appreciate and find inspiration in everything—whether they’re big or small [Pero ngayong pandemic, nakafocus ako sa sarili ko at sa art ko. Naappreciate ko din ang bawat bagay, maliit man o malaki].”

The Bulacan-based Andrade looked back on how opportunities presented themselves to him in the middle of adversity. One such door was his win during the NSAC competition

in 2014. His winning oil on canvas piece, entitled ‘Ipinagkakait na Kalayaan,’ was in itself an example of triumph over adversity: this lifechanging canvas depicts paintbrushes ready to be buried, and was inspired by the death of his mother and the pains that come from being part of a broken family.

He said, “As a young student artist from the province, I had simple dreams of finishing college and getting a normal job. I didn’t think I could ever win NSAC, but it was such a big help for me and my family. I was able to pursue my art, and I learned to dream bigger. [Dati, pangarap ko lang sa probinsya ay makatapos ng pag-aaral at kumuha ng trabaho.

Nakakatuwa dahil di ko akalain na mananalo ako sa NSAC. Sobrang laking tulong ng NSAC. Nakatapos ako ng pagaaral at natuto akong mangarap ng higit sa pangarap ko.]”

Zabala concurred that creative platforms such as NSAC are bringers of hope that can keep communities alive during the most difficult

times. He said, “Art is a great tool for healing. It’s cathartic. We can use it to give people something to hold on to as they live through the pandemic.”

Simbulan reminded the audience to remember and explore its rich heritage to mine stories for encouragement. She said, “As Filipinos, we have a wealth of culture and creativity that can act as reservoirs of hope and fuel for economic recovery. It is only by harnessing their collective potentials, skills and energies can they effect social transformation, for after-all, that is what cooperativism is for!
