Ms. Earth beauties visit MisOr tourist’s sites

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY--A group of candidates of the Ms. Earth 2019 beauty pageant embarked on a two-day visit to Misamis Oriental to tour some of the province’s tourist attractions.

The 14 candidates came from Austria, Italy, Croatia, Malta, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Paraguay, Kenya, Reunion Island, China, Tonga, India, Liberia, and Vietnam.

The beauties visited and planted mangrove at the Tubajon Aquamarine Park in Barangay Tubajon, Laguindingan town.

Later, the young women also toured the Initao-Libertad Protected Seascape and Landscape, a protected forest and one of the attractions of the province.

The aquamarine park has won the “Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan” awards of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, besting other contenders from around the country, in 2017.

LDN heightens rabies awareness thru art contest LANAO DEL NORTE--The Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte through the Provincial Veterinary Office strengthens the anti-rabies campaign by organizing the “Poster Making Contest 2019 Rabies: Educate to Eliminate” at Mindanao Civic Center Hotel Gazebo, Sagadan, Tubod, October 1.

Twenty elementary and 22 secondary schools of the province participated in the activity to illustrate their own interpretation of the province’s efforts in combatting rabies.

LDN farmers learn Carrageenan technology for higher yields

LANAO DEL NORTE--To incur higher yields at lower input costs, the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte through the Provincial Agriculturist Office held the “Farmers Field Day on Carrageenan Plant Growth Promoter Technology for Rice: A Grant to Rice Farmers in Lanao del Norte” held at the Provincial Nursery in Kapatagan town, October 2.

Conducted in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD), and Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), the activity taught farmers to use the said technology where plants will exhibit stronger stems, longer roots, healthier tillers, and longer panicles.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY-Department of Information Communications Technology (DICT) Mindanao Cluster 2 launched its Free Wi-Fi For All under free public internet access program at East-West Terminal Departure and Arrival Area, Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City.

Per Republic Act 10929, Free Public Internet Access Program shall provide free access to internet service in public places throughout the country.

According to DICT,

Free WI-Fi is already operational at a total of 3,000 public places nationwide as of October 2, 2019. Over 5 million users across 77 provinces and 768 localities have accessed the network.

Meanwhile, 308 of these 3,000 sites have been operational since July 2019.

In region 10, there had been 94 Free WiFi sites installed. This includes Misamis Oriental (39), Misamis Occidental (10), Bukidnon (21), Camiguin (10) and See ACCESS, page 10

-oooI HAD MY HAIRS STANDING ON END WITH THE SENATE HEARING THURSDAY: To all those who listened to the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing in the mid-afternoon of Thursday, October 03, 2019 where the subject still dwelt on the so-called “ninja cops” (or policemen who are said to be selling shabu or other illegal drugs confiscated by them from suspected drug dealers), I believe that many of you also experienced hairraising sensations as soon as a retired general of the Philippine National Police (PNP) started talking about the scam.

Making his disclosures against the suspected “ninja cops” who were seated just a few inches away from him, former PNP General

Manuel Gaerlan directly accused the policemen of peddling outright lies in their account of the raid they conducted on a house inside the Lakeshore Village in Mexico, Pampanga. The policemen, led by Lt. Col. Rodney Raymundo Louie Baloyo of the Pampanga Police Provincial Office, are facing a Senate inquiry into their possible roles as ninja cops”.

According to Gaerlan, the reports made by Baloyo and his men about an alleged buy-bust operation on a house inside Lakeshore Village to allegedly arrest a Chinese drug lord are not true but are mere falsities.

“As per our own validation, that operation was not a buy-bust operation,” Gaerlan added.

-oooDOCUMENTS ON THE PAMPANGA SHABU RAID “DOCTORED”: In his testimony as a resource person during the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on Thursday, October 03,

2019, retired police Gen. Manuel Gaerlan managed to draw out the fact that Lt. Col. Rodney Raymundo Louie Baloyo and his men merely fabricated or doctored documents to clothe with legitimacy their operations at the Lakeshore Village in Mexico, Pampanga, although it was just really a case of “hulidap” (which is a local slang for “arrests for extortion”).

Gaerlan claimed that he was compelled to testify before the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee about the Baloyo operations because he and the other high ranking officials of Regional Police Office No. 3 not only felt greatly bothered by the criminal activities of Baloyo and his men, but that the officers also resented being considered by Baloyo and company as “stupid officers” who are either ignorant of what was happening in Region 3, or were afraid to do anything.

and his men in his testimony, the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee decided to confirm and implement its earlier ruling that Baloyo was “in contempt of the Senate” because of his repeated evasiveness in directly answering the questions of the Committee members led by Chairman Richard Gordon, ordering his detention at the Pasay City Jail, where he will be confined until he decides to be truthful in his answers, or until the term of the senators composing the Blue Ribbon Committee ends in 2022.

In the year 1830, Joe moved into a small community in Massachusetts, U.S.A. Even though Joe was a kind, honest and good citizen, from the day he moved to town he was rejected and ridiculed. Wherever he went people laughed at him, and when they saw him walking their direction they would quickly cross to the other side of the street. Even the windows of his house were regularly broken by men throwing rocks in the night.

Joe continued to go his quiet way and ignore the insults. But one day as he was walking down Main Street he heard footsteps behind him. When he turned around to look, a group of men attacked him. Joe fought back, but they overpowered him

and dragged him off to jail.

These men lied and told the authorities it was Joe who started the fight by attacking them. But Joe refused to pay any penalty since he knew he had done nothing wrong, so they locked him in jail.

From his jail cell, Joe began to write letters to his family, telling them the truth of how the town was unfairly judging him. His son then sent the letters to a local newspaper, and soon newspapers across the nation were printing Joe’s story of persecution. The pressure from public opinion finally forced the town leaders to set Joe free.

Interestingly, years later Joe lived to see two U.S. Presidents and men all over America do the exact same

thing for which Joe had been wrongly judged and persecuted. You see, during that time in America, people believed that all respectable men were clean-shaven, and Joe Palmer had dared to wear a beard!

It is so true: “You cannot judge a book by its cover.”

Unfortunately, some people’s beliefs go only skin deep.

They just follow what others tell them is right and wrong, instead of thinking for themselves and looking deeper for what is really true and important in life.

Joe’s town was a perfect example of “the blind leading the blind.” Fortunately, Joe knew better. He knew that the beard on his face was not the real person he was in his heart and character.

The rites were an offer of friendship to the soldiers, according to Nanolan.

We have a lot of destinations to offer in terms of tourism which can be maximized if we could offer our tourists an alternative and inviting means to reach us,” said

In a meeting with her last September 15, Romualdez reiterated the Philippine government’s commitment to uphold the welfare and protect the rights of overseas Filipinos at all times.

Nanay Fedelina came from a generation when slave-like employment practices or highly unregulated domestic employment were still commonplace in the Philippines.

According to the Consulate General, she also seems to be one of the few to survive this and gain freedom.

Athletes from four units showcased their prowess in outdoor sports events, ball games, board games, taekwondo, arnis, gymnastics, and dance sports.

The yearly event is aimed not only to recognize the fittest in sports and physical agility but also to foster the spirit of sportsmanship among the learners, teachers, administrators and all stakeholders of the entire Maa District.

Winners were officially declared during the awarding rites on the second day of the event.

Unit 1or Maa Red Dragon Team garnered 70 gold, 27 silver, and 39 bronze medals which placed them as the overall champion of the event. Unit 4 bagged 56 gold, 57 silver, and 14 bronze medals which ranked them in second place. Unit 3 however, got 37 gold, 11 silver, and 14 bronze medals which made them the third placer. Unit 2 of S.I.R. Elementary School got 11 gold, 42 silver, and 37 bronze medals that completed the rank as fourth place.

The event was successful through the unparalleled efforts of different committee spearheaded by District Supervisor Dr. Milagros O. Supera and District Sports Coordinator Nora S. Palmera. Their labors were partnered with the Maa Central Elementary School Principal Mel Joy B. Barral and School Sports Coordinator Lenita E. Dalog.

Congratulations to all the winners and competitors who sported their way to the top while having fun and enjoyment. Salute to the working force and coaches who worked hard to facilitate the teams and coordinate with the athletes, as well as the staff who projected a competitive outlook all throughout the event. Energy, tourism sectors to reap benefits from PRRD’s Russia trip

MANILA -- The Philippines power and tourism sectors are among those that will benefit from the trip of President Rodrigo R. Duterte in Russia last October 1 to 5.

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III told journalists Tuesday that potential investments from the recent foreign trip of the Chief Executive “is quite significant”, although he declined to indicate figures.

“You have to remember that we don’t have a big relationship with Russia and I think that the trip of the President opened the avenues for increased contact with Russians like tourism investments here.

They’re very interested in looking at our infrastructure projects, particularly in power,” he said.

Dominguez said possible investments in the power sector include those for power distribution and

generation, as well as for renewable energy (RE).

“In fact, we spoke to one of their energy companies.

I forget the name but they have extensive wind power.

Russia is a big country so there’s a lot of opportunity,” he added.

Possible power sector investments are a plus for the Philippines especially after the President, in his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July, pushed for the fast-tracking of RE resources in a bid to lessen the country’s dependence on traditional sources like coal.

The Department of Energy (DOE) targets to increase the share of RE on total power source to about 35 percent by 2030.

This, as the Renewable Energy Act of 2008 provides for the harmonization of policies for development of technologies that would benefit wind, hydropower, solar, ocean, and biomass energy. (PNA)

Gov’t defends decision to buy PHP2 billion luxury jet for Duterte

PRESIDENTIAL plane Gulfstream G280 was purchased from the United States government and will be delivered to the Philippines next year, Arsenio Andolong, director of the Department of National Defense’s Public Affairs Service, told ABS-CBN News.

He described the jet as “similar to an airborne command post,” which will be used “in the event of a crisis situation.”

The procurement of the aircraft was approved

by Defense Secretar y Delfin Lorenzana in November of last year.

Asked for his reaction to Reyes’ tweet, Panelo said in English and Filipino, that the plane was

“not for comfort.”

“Is that even comfortable?” he asked of the aircraft (which, to be fair, is at the lower end of Gulfstream’s line of multi-million dollar luxury jets).

“You need that in times of crisis… If it’s a necessity,

why would you think it’s an unnecessary purchase?

“The president is very frugal. He doesn’t spend unless necessary.”

According to a statement released by Gulfstream announcing the Philippines’ order, the

G280 can fly eight hours non-stop (long enough, for instance, to make it from Dubai to Hong Kong), has a maximum range of 3,600 nautical miles (6,667 kilometers), and can cruise at Mach 0.8.

MANILA -- For 65 years, “Nanay Fedelina” lived like a modern-day slavery victim with her employer in the United States. This year, at 81, she’s ready to begin the life of a free woman.

Nanay Fedelina was a nanny who was brought to the United States by the Filipino-American family she was serving when she was just 16 years old.

She spent 65 years in servitude.

In a June 2019 interview

with ABS-CBN’s Balitang America, Nanay Fedelina narrated her ordeal with the family she served for four generations.

“Nag-alaga ko ng nanay niya, nag-alaga ako ng anak niya, tapos nanay naman niya, apat na apo ang inalagaan ko. Lahat ‘yun ginawa ko ako lang mag-isa -- nagluluto, naglilinis, namamalantsa, namamalengke -- ako lahat, kayang-kaya ko, hinahatid-sinusundo, dinadalhan ng pagkain sa eskuwela (I took care of the matriarch, I took care

of the children, and then the mom, I watched over four grandchildren. I did everything alone-- from cooking, cleaning, ironing clothes-- I did those alone),” she said in the interview.

“Ang hinihigaan ko ang lamig, ang dumi-dumi, butas-butas pa ‘yong blanket ko, salbahe silang mag-ina (I slept on the cold floor with my blanket hole-ridden.

The mother and child were cruel),” she added.

“Ngayon, maligaya na ako at malaya. Hindi na ako nakakulong, hindi na ako

inaapi ng mga tao (Now, I am happy and free. I am no longer locked up, no longer abused by people)”.

In a recent Philippine Independence Day reception in Los Angeles she attended, Nanay Fedelina was hailed as “a symbol of courage and freedom, the very essence of the annual celebration of Philippine Independence.”

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) estimated the number of communist rebels at 3,900 nationwide in 2018.

Lumads form the bulk of the NPA rebels whose area of operations are in the mountains and fringes of Mindanao.

The AFP Eastern Mindanao Command faces 50 percent of the NPA rebels in northeastern Mindanao and the province of Bukidnon.

EastMinCom has 21,485 Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) members distributed to 12 provinces and 10 component cities in northeastern and southern Mindanao.

Like the communist rebels, the lumad form 60 percent of the 21,485 CAFGUs, while only 783 of them are regular enlisted Army personnel.

Lt. Col. Ronald Illana, the commanding officer of the 8IB, said the war against the rebels with lumad combatants is intense in the mountains that form the backbone of Mindanao.

Illana claimed however that the Army has successfully degraded the communist rebels and decreased NPA-perpetrated violence in Bukidnon.

“Our strategy of winning the hearts and minds of the lumad is gaining some success, and more elders like Datu Nanolan are finding it is a wise move to support the government,” he said.

A multimillion-peso funded program called End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELAC) initiated by President Rodrigo Duterte assured there is enough money for the lumad.

Illana said a regional task force composed of government agencies implements ELAC to boost the delivery of basic services in identified insurgency stronghold areas.

“When we were with the NPA, each of us contributes P5 a day or P150 a month.

The Army on the other hand gave us a tractor and bags of seedlings for our farms,” Nanolan said.

He said the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) awarded Nanolan and his community a Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT) for 14,000 hectares in barangay Hagpa.

the direct superior police officer of Baloyo who conformed to what Baloyo reported.

Albayalde’s signature in that document was disclosed by a senator who was given a chance to propound questions to Baloyo.

When Gaerlan was asked to comment on Baloyo’s report (that contained Albayalde’s signature), the retired PNP general right away fired off that the report was packed with mere lies. What I understood from that comment by Gaerlan was that Albayalde’s signature therein also constituted a lie, and was in fact meant to legitimize that report even if it was not truthful. It was a pity that senators failed (or really did not want?) to touch this explosive issue.

Suspect in Kidapawan broadcaster slay yields KIDAPAWAN CITY--One of the alleged suspects in the killing of a radio journalist here last July 10 surrendered to the local police around 10 a.m. on Monday.

Sotero Jacolbe Jr., also known as Jun Jacolbe who is also a broadcaster, said there is no reason to hide from authorities.
