24 former NPA rebels get free housing units

AMP EVANGELISTA, Cagayan de Oro City: Twenty-four former communist New People’s Army (NPA) were awarded free housing units, part of the terms of surrender offered by the government, the military said Friday.

Seven of the 24 former NPA members came from Cagayan de Oro City while the 17 others came from Bukidnon, the military said. Maj. Francisco Garello, Jr. the military spokesperson here, said that seven surrenderers were awarded housing units located in CDO Midland Valley Homes in Dansolihon, Cagayan De Oro City. He said that the 17 others were awarded housing units located in Pineville, San Jose, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. The government, through the Office of the Office of

the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) awarded Certificates of Entitlement of Housing Units to the former MPA rebels. According to Garello, the awarding of the housing units was in faithful compliance with the commitments of the government as reinforced by the Clarificatory Implementing Document to the 2000 Peace Agreement. People United, Can Never be Defeated

There are now more than 18,000 cooperatives nation-wide with some 15 million members who are courageously trail-blazing cooperativism to be transformative for people, planet, prosperity and peace during these most critical times. Indeed, harnessing the collective power of the people is the only way to transform a highly skewed pyramidal societal order to draw those in the margins into the mainstream of development processes. Indeed, every generation is faced with problems inherent in its time and circumstances but there will always be leaders who will stand up to the call to uproot the root causes of the problems. This was true the last century when Rizal and Bonifacio rose-up to the call by waging struggle against colonialism as our country then had been suffering from 300 years of oppression and colonial rule. The charisma of these few brave men inspired the many to organize resistance giving birth to a sovereign nation. The advent of a new age saw our country beset with a new set of problems deeply rooted in poverty, gross inequity and social injustices rooted in the powerlessness of the people. The challenges we face today may be different from those faced by our ancestors a century ago but the guiding formula

that relies on the collective strength of the people has remained the same. For in truth, the people united can never be defeated. This was true a century ago when the people collectively fought and dismantled successfully colonial rule. This is truer today when the people are organizing and mobilizing as they bind themselves to resist poverty, inequities and social injustice through cooperativism. That was the raizon d’ etre when no less than the late Senator Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel when sitting as one of the framers of the 1987 Constitution led in categorically putting in Chapter 15, Art. 12 the provision, “to promote the viability and growth of cooperatives as instruments of social justice, equity and economic development.” Such was the essence of cooperativism that both Sen. Nene Pimentel and Atty. Mordino Cua had been trailblazing in Cagayan de Oro in those pioneering years that is now concretely shown by successful cooperatives i.e. FICCO, MASS-SPECC, OIC and what have you. The two great leaders may have already leaped to the Great Beyond, but I am fortunate to have them as my friends whom I would learn from and inter-act with. I remember taking meals with them before and discussing the transformative purpose of

cooperativism. The clarity of their vision and ideas created the energy to put a dream to reality. To quote a favorite poet aptly, “they have been a noontide in our midst, and their vision has given us dreams to dream.” As I have already paid tribute to the late Sen. Nene Pimentel whom I described as the “Father” of cooperatives in the country and a cooperative hero, this time, may I describe how great Atty. Mordino Cua was, whose 52 years cooperative journey had exemplified a life based on the Jesuit tradition of “man for others.” The words of Winston Churchill could well describe his cooperative journey as a man “who gave so much for so little.” His cooperative journey which was a path “least taken” then as it meant choosing to live a life that would exact no less than the highest standard of commitment and dedication, notwithstanding a great degree of sacrifice not only to himself but to his beloved wife and children. Such being the case, what then prompted Mordino Rodriguez Cua, an idealistic young lawyer then in the ‘50s to embark and trailblaze a missionary path of service which was then contrary to See UNITED, page 19

110 million people living well within planetary boundaries At the recently-concluded Pilipinas Conference 2021, Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala (JAZA), Chairman of the Ayala Group, could not over-emphasize the need for collective unity and commitment in addressing societal pain points toward national recovery. Beyond the Covid 19 pandemic, he said, we need to intervene not just in climate change but also in issues of inclusivity and equality. JAZA was a speaker at a speaker at the thoughtprovoking 5-day conference sponsored by think-tank Stratbase ADR. This year’s event gathered environmental stakeholders from the government, private sector, international community, and civil society to discuss “whole of society” actions for a green and sustainable recovery. “Not one enterprise nor sector, however large and vigorous, can do it alone and sustain these recovery efforts. However, taken together and working together, individual contributions

however small, can add up to critical mass and sustainable momentum.” JAZA narrated how the COVID 19 pandemic provided the business sector with the unique opportunity of working with each other and with government. He described Project Ugnayan as one such giant collaborative effort where 270 private businesses quickly came together to raise funds to distribute food aid to over 14 million vulnerable Filipinos. The private sector also built biomolecular labs, hospitals and isolation facilities while participating actively in the vaccination program- both in the procurement of vaccines and actual inoculations. But the private sector can certainly do more. “The social contract of private corporations needs to move beyond philanthropy and corporate social responsibility actions. We must also seek to direct and pivot our business purpose, our portfolios, our practices

at their core to help solve society’s major pain points. We need “to adapt to the changing consumers and market conditions and to provide more and more equitable access to quality basic services. Only if our whole entire ecosystem prospers will we be able to continue to contribute to society through job generation, the manufacture and sale of products and services, the payment of taxes, and continue attracting investors and provide us capital in a sustainable fashion.” JAZA talked of climate change and other sustainability issues. “Climate change is here and intervention is imperative. However, I would like to add that the devastating impact of climate change is just one among the wider set of challenges falling under See LIVING, page 19

As cybersecurity, privacy and data ethics become increasingly intertwined, organizations such

as DepEd need a central place to turn for authoritative data and actionable advice. This new platform will explore how to build confidence in the readiness of people, processes and technologies to meet tomorrow’s challenges. Students, teachers and parents need new mechanisms to build that confidence as they address emerging challenges in school records management such as grades and lesson plans. In other countries,

schools are pursuing digital transformation projects - putting emerging technology into action while aiming to solve problems, creating unique experiences and accelerating performance of students and teachers alike. Cebu Pacific transports 30-M COVID vaccine doses, supports National Vaccination Drive T HE Philippines’ leading airline, Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), has transported more than 30 million COVID-19 vaccine doses across the country to date, hitting a new delivery milestone in time for the country’s threeday National Vaccination Days. The Philippines will observe

the National Vaccination Drive on November 29, November 30, and December 1. Since March, CEB has safely airlifted life-saving vaccines to 28 provinces, namely: Bacolod, Boracay, Bohol, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cauayan, Cebu, Cotabato, Davao, Dipolog, Dumaguete, General Santos,

Iloilo, Legazpi, Kalibo, Masbate, Naga, Ozamiz, Pagadian, Puerto Princesa, Roxas, San Jose, Siargao Tacloban, Tuguegarao, Tawi Tawi, Virac and Zamboanga. Cagayan de Oro received the most number of vaccine shipments of 3,360,990 doses to date, followed by Davao, Cotabato, Iloilo, and Butuan. The airline has also transported over 16.5 million vaccine doses from China to the Philippines from April to July 2021. “We are thankful to Cebu Pacific for bringing these muchneeded vaccines. With your support, we are hopeful that we will be able to achieve our goal to inoculate 70% of our target population, eyeing daily vaccination of 10,000 for 25 days beginning this third week of November,” said Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno. All vaccines were stored in containers with the established temperature limit to ensure that they are preserved until arrival at the designated stations. “We are pleased to actively participate in helping drive the country’s immunization program. The timely delivery of vaccines across the Philippines

aids in ensuring the safety of the Filipinos while promoting economic recovery,” said Alex Reyes, Chief Strategy Officer at Cebu Pacific.
