DICT extends literary training to IDPs MARAWI CITY-- For the second time this year, another 20 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Marawi City were capacitated with skills in information and communications technology (ICT) in a training conducted by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). Jehan Marzoc of Barangay Gadongan said that she would be able to use the knowledge she gained from the training in her future endeavors. “I’m so glad na nakasali ako, kasi marami akong di alam sa ICT,” said Marzoc. (I am so glad that I was able to participate because I have gained so much knowledge about ICT.) Marzoc said that she also plans to share everything she has learned to her fellow youth. We are all interconnected
WE NEED to be more aware of this reality so that we both can enjoy its rights and privileges and fulfill the duties inherent in it. Truth is no matter how isolated we are physically, mentally or emotionally, we are all interconnected for the most basic reason that we belong to the same world, the same universe, the same creation of God. If we believe that God our creator is intelligence and love himself, then we can presume that he must have created the whole universe with an over-all single and consistent design with each creature somehow related to everybody and everything else. We may not see the interconnection clearly but we can already have some clues and hints of it by the
way we want to live some semblance of law and order in our lives. If we have that innate desire, it is because there must be a pre-ordained interconnection among all the creatures of this world, with us, being the image and likeness of God, exercising a leading role in living, developing and keeping that interconnection. This is the reason why we have to be always thoughtful of God and of others, and in fact, of everything else. We just should not be thinking of ourselves only. We have to realize that our growth to maturity depends on how much we are thoughtful of God and of the others and how we fulfill our duties towards them. And because of our interconnectivity, we have to realize that whatever we do
or whatever condition or status we can find ourselves in, will always have an effect on the others. No matter how isolated or separated we are from the others, we can always affect them either in a good or a bad way depending on how we are in a given moment. That is why even if we are alone and doing some work, we can still affect the others in a positive way if we offer that work for the intention of the others and doing that work well. What we do alone never remains with us only. It will always affect the lives of others. In this regard, it might be good also to know about the doctrine of our faith called “communion of saints.” The Catechism describes it in this way: “Since all the faithful form one body, the good

of each is communicated to the others… “We must therefore believe that there exists a communion of goods in the Church. But the most important member is Christ, since he is the head…Therefore, the riches of Christ are communicated to all the members, through the sacraments. Growers want PH-SoKor banana tariff stalemate resolved By LILYBETH ISON
MANILA -- The country’s top banana growers and exporters are calling on both the South Korean and Philippine governments to immediately resolve stalemate on the proposed reduction of tariff rates on banana shipments. The Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association Inc. (PBGEA) urged Manila and Seoul to work on the speedy end to the issue of very high import tariffs imposed on Philippine bananas. The negotiations between the Philippines and Korea have been on a stalemate as Korea insists on greater market access for its automotive exports to the Philippines in exchange for a lower if not zero tariffs for Philippine bananas. “The negotiations have only started in the second quarter while the tariff rates for our competitors have been getting more and more favorable to our disadvantage,” Stephen Antig, executive director of PBGEA, in a statement on Sunday. President Rodrigo Duterte is scheduled to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations – Republic of Korea (ROK) Commemorative Summit and other side events in Busan, South Korea on November 25-26. South Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Han Dong-man earlier said at least four cooperation agreements in the fields of social security, education, fisheries, and tourism will be signed after the two leader’s bilateral meeting.

DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez said South Korean trade officials were amenable to tariffs cut as long as the Philippines lowers import duties on industrial products, especially automotive parts. The Philippines hopes the FTA will translate to improved market access for its agricultural products such as banana, pineapple, okra, avocado, poultry products, and mango -- in exchange for Korea’s industrial goods. MANILA -- Conglomerate San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has taken another major step in the area of sustainability, by laying the first recycled plastics road in the Philippines. Asphalt using plastics were laid on a 1,500-square meter pilot test site at a new logistics center in General Trias, Cavite. The test site was chosen as it will be used primarily as a marshaling area for trucks with heavy loads, including 18-wheelers, and heavy equipment. SMC president Ramon S. Ang said: “What we want to achieve is to help address an important environmental issue, and that is plastic wastes. We want to create a sustainable use for waste plastics so that they don’t end up in landfills and our rivers and oceans.” Some 900 kilos of plastic waste, equivalent to some 180,000 sachets and plastic bags, were used for the test site. SMC’s technology partner, global materials science company Dow, said recycled plastic waste acts as a binder together with bitumen, in the production of asphalt. The company said using recycled plastics in the production process can help make roads longer lasting and more durable compared

Mati City exec wants dive sites in Pujada, Mayo bays explored By CHE PALICTE
DAVAO CITY -- After six years of banning dive explorations in Mati City, Davao Oriental, various private individuals, in partnership with the local government, have revived search of possible dive sites in Pujada and Mayo bays. In a statement sent on Sunday by the Mati City Information Office, it said the dive exploration started more than six years ago but was discontinued by the administration that replaced Mayor Michelle Rabat in 2013 until 2019. Now that she is back on the seat, Rabat decided to revive the dive site exploration with the hope of boosting tourism in the city of Mati. Over the weekend, businessman and diving enthusiast Miko Rabat, brother of the mayor, invited fellow
divers Bong Chavez and Curtis Cooper to explore Manggihay Beach in Pujada Bay. “This is the first diving exploration made in Pujada Bay in the past six years. The team said they are just in their initial phase in the identification of possible dive sites,” the statement read. In August, the Department of Tourism in Region 11 (DOT-11) held a series of dive validation activities in Mati City and the municipality of Tarragona, Davao Oriental which revealed more potential sites for diving operations. It was learned that there are many possible dive sites in Pujada Bay and that the city government wants them all identified. THE growing number of highly sensitive youth in the country who commit suicide must be nipped in the bud at this early stage when programs dealing with mental health will be introduced in DepEd’s curriculum. House Bill (HB) 7858, which intends to establish Youth Health Centers nationwide to address the stigma of mental health and identify depression, includes life education and peer counseling programs to foster positive mental health among elementary pupils and other high school students. Under these Youth
Health Centers will be the Youth Suicide Prevention Center to ensure that the mental health needs of our youth are taken care of. It must include a peer counseling training course that teaches basic counseling skills as well as a mentor-mentee program to stimulate relationship and confidence building and skill and academic motivation. Implementing a peer counseling program in schools will encourage positive mental health for students and thus prevent suicides. It can be recalled that President Duterte already signed into law RA 11036 or the Mental Health Law last June but this is for the general population.
