behind the settlement of the disputes of the warring clans from the Banwaon and Manobo tribes.

Jimenea said the conflict had already caused several deaths from both sides, affecting the area’s peace and order situation.

The dispute, he said, has also hindered the development interventions of the local government unit and government line agencies.

On November 19, local officials and top tribal leaders in San Luis facilitated a dialogue between the conflicting clans that resulted in the peaceful settlement of their dispute.

BUTUAN CITY – There are more males infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) compared to females in the Caraga Region, a top official of the Department of Health in the region (DOH-13) said.

DOH-13 director Jose R. Llacuna, Jr. told Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Thursday that they have recorded a total of 705 HIV cases in the region as of June 2019.

Of the total number of cases since 2014, 668 or 94.7 percent are males while 37 cases or 5.3 percent are females.

Records show that the region recorded 63 cases in 2014 that increased to 86 in 2015; 95 cases in 2016; 121 cases in 2017; 158 in 2018; and, up to 705 cases as of June this year.

He said most of HIV cases in the region are recorded in the province of Agusan del Norte, with 274 cases.

“The record in Agusan del Norte is high because of Butuan City with 210 cases,” he added.

Recorded cases of HIV in provinces include 144 cases in Agusan del Sur that include 26 cases in Bayugan City; 140 cases in Surigao del Norte, including the 84 cases in Surigao City; 139 cases in Surigao del Sur, including the 26 cases in Tandag City and 29 cases in Bislig City; and four cases in the Province of Dinagat Islands.

“The trend of the HIV cases in Caraga Region is going up,” Llacuna said, while also pointing out that HIV carriers in Caraga are getting younger.

DOH-13 records show that 49 percent of those infected are aged 25 to 34 years old, and 33.5 percent are aged 15 to 24 years old.

“Most were infected through sexual contact with 698 cases,” he said, adding that most of the sexual contacts they recorded that See REPORTED, page 10

ILIGAN City--Policemen are now tracking down the suspect responsible for the killing of one of the two siblings on Wednesday (November 20) night in Barangay Dagumba-an, Maramag town in Bukidnon.

Police Major Gil Agpaoa, chief of Maramag Police Station, identified the victims as Joseph, 36; and Jesus Bodiongan, 34.

Agpaoa said the victims were brought to a nearby

hospital but Joseph reportedly did not reach the hospital alive. He succumbed to a gunshot wound in the chest while Jesus was hit in his right leg.

Initial police investigation said the siblings were on their way home from a neighbor’s wake where they served as cook, when they were attack by the suspect.

Agpaoa said Jesus managed to identify their attacker.

Coffee drinkers, rejoice!

DRINKING coffee reduces the risk of death from heart disease, diabetes or cancer, according to a certified medical research conducted recently.

Added to that, it may extend life expectancy 10 times or more.

A series of medical studies show that people who drink two to four cups of coffee a day had lower risk of death compared with those who didn’t drink coffee at all.

It was found out that drinking more cups of coffee every day reduces the chances of death from heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and cancer.

The second study also revealed that those who drank more coffee had less chance to die early compared to those nondrinkers.

It was noted as well that both studies found similar results for people who drank decaffeinated coffee.

The importance of ejaculatory prayers

WE need to be more familiar with what are known as ejaculatory prayers, other wise known also as aspirations. They are short prayers that spring rather quite spontaneously from the heart that is going through the different situations in life—happy, sad, tense, tired, excited, bored, etc. They reflect one’s relation with God and are inspired by faith, hope and charity.

To me, ejaculator y prayers are very helpful in quickly and easily putting ourselves in God’s presence, especially when we immerse ourselves deeply in the things of the world as we ought.

They help us relate ourselves and everything that happens to us to God, again as we ought. They help us in keeping a spiritual and supernatural outlook as we go through the different events of the day. In short, they help in keeping us spiritually alive, and not just alive in the body and to the world.

They help us see things better in the sense that we just would not see them with our senses and our human understanding alone, but also and more importantly with our faith, which is what is ideal and proper to us.

They somehow put us in an intimate relation with our Father God. With them we will never feel alone nor distant from God. My personal experience with ejaculatory prayers shows that they are very helpful even in making me calm and rested even in the middle of a tense situation for the mind or for the body. They help in making me breathe more deeply and thus give some relief.

Also, not to forget is that they are very helpful in protecting and defending us from temptations and sin. They make the spiritual combat and ascetical struggle, so unavoidable in life, more manageable.

They also help in pre-

paring us for the more serious forms in our relationship with God as when we have to do our prayers, our sacrifices and our recourse to the sacraments.

We should all do our best to make it a habit to say ejaculatory prayers often during the day. Any short and earnest expression of our faith and piety will do. And also in this regard, the many vocal prayers that are already available can be very useful.

The “Our Father’s,” “Hail Mary’s” and “Glory be’s” are truly helpful.

We do not have to invent more prayers to be used as ejaculatory prayers. We may just even say, “Lord, I love you, I believe in you, I trust you,” or words to that effect. There are also many other prayers addressed to Our Lady, to St. Joseph, to St. Michael, and to other saints that can be used.

The important thing is that they are said with sincerity of heart and

rectitude of intention.

They definitely do not hamper us in our daily work and concerns. In fact, the contrary is true.

They facilitate things a lot.

This business of saying ejaculatory prayers often during the day should be taught to children as early as possible. You cannot imagine what great benefits they will enjoy when they learn to do it as a habit when they grow up and get exposed to all sorts of things.

Let’s encourage everyone to do the same. There may be a little awkwardness in the beginning, but it’s not something that cannot be overcome. Many homes are not happy because the husband and wife haven’t learned to control their anger and fight by the rules.

Of course, I don’t mean fist fighting, but rather arguing with words. There are 5 simple guidelines for fighting that would make

a big difference in many marriages and homes.

The 1st one is smart timing. If you are still angry, then it’s usually better to wait until both of you are in a better mood.

“Take time out before you take it out on each other!”

As one lady who‘d been married over 35 years said: “I’ve learned never to tell my husband bad news on an empty stomach!”

The 2nd guideline is to allow the other person the right to say, “I’m angry.”

Let them tell you how they feel. If we don’t let others express their anger in a healthy way, then it will continue to build up until we finally blow up!

Then we can deeply hurt each other with the angry, even hateful, things we say and do. Remember, our feelings are not right or wrong, but they’re still real; so we need to allow each other the freedom to say how we feel.

THE Monetary Board approved the revision to the definition of a deposit substitute to align the same with the provisions of the BSP Charter which was amended under Republic Act No. 11211.

Under Section 95 of the new BSP Charter, a deposit substitute refers to a form of obtaining funds from the public, other than deposits, through the issuance, endorsement or acceptance of debt instruments for the purpose of relending or purchase of other receivables and obligations.

The provisions of Section 95 clarify that the term “obtaining funds from the public” refers to borrowing from 20 or more lenders that are individuals or corporate entities which are not financial intermediaries.

Customs-NAIA destroys 20 tons of unsafe forfeited goods

MANILA -- Customs officials at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Thursday destroyed 20 tons of goods in Trece Martires, Cavite.

In a statement, Port of NAIA district collector Carmelita Talusan said the

condemnation proceeding is part of the Bureau of Customs’ (BOC) efforts to decongest their storage facilities.

It is also in line with the directive of Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero to clear storage facilities of abandoned and illegally shipped items to better

facilitate trade within the port.

She added that the goods were destroyed using the thermal decomposer (pyrolysis) facility of the Integrated Waste Management Inc. (IWMI).

Pyrolysis is the thermal decomposition of substance and materials with-

out any trace of molecular oxygen in the destruction chamber.

The activity was in coordination with the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Optical Media Board

(OMB) National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) and the Commission on Audit (COA).

The condemnation is in accordance with the provisions of Section 1145

(Disposition of Goods Injurious to Public Health) and 1148 (Disposition of Regulated Goods) of the Republic Act No. 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act. (PNA)

P8-M potable water systems turned over in Mati City

DAVAO CITY – Two potable water systems (PWS) of the Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) were turned over to the local government of Mati City in Davao Oriental on separate occasions.

The first project was turned over on November 18 at Barangay Taguibo while the second PWS was turned over on Wednesday (November 20) in Barangay Libudon.

Funded by the World Bank, both projects cost around PHP8 million.

RDRRMC XI member agencies assess relocation sites for relocation of Davao Region quake victims DAVAO CITY -- Five relocation sites out of seven areas recommended by the municipal government of Magsaysay, Davao del Sur were assessed and approved by the member-agencies of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council XI for the victims of the series of earthquakes in October.

Agencies involved in the assessment are the National Housing Authority XI, Mines and Geosciences Bureau XI, Department of Social Welfare and Development XI, and Office of Civil Defense XI.

Three relocation sites in Barangay San Miguel, one in Barangay Malawanit and one in Clam Village, Barangay Poblacion Proper were found to be suited for transfer of displaced families from Barangay Tagaytay, Sitio Macabolos, Purok 6,7 and 8 of Barangay Tagaytay, Puro and 6 of Sitio B’lasan, Barangay Upper B’lasan and Purok 12 in Barangay Bahacanan.

Herbert Villano, geologist from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau XI said the approved relocation sites need to be documented.

He said there were areas

which were not applicable as relocation site particularly at Purok 10 in Barangay Balnate and in Barangay Bacungan.

“We suggest to the local government unit to look for other possible relocation sites since the ones we evaluated did not have good terrain, with a very steep slope in the center of the property,” Villano said.

He said other areas suggested need to be documented with the corresponding recommendation so that the people can proceed with the relocation.

the National Housing Authority XI said he approves four relocation sites and one that needs mitigating structure for slope protection.

He said that he would not recommend the sites in Barangay Balnate and Barangay Bacungan since these areas have steep slopes.

“We must ensure that the site is safe and suitable for the beneficiaries of the relocation,” Cesamilo said.

Raph Jay-Ar Gaspar of the Department of Social Welfare and Development XI said his concerns would be the labor and material outsourcing, and passable access road.

Mahilum-West said Duterte will be accompanied by several Cabinet members, but deferred to the Office of the President to release the roster of the official Philippine delegation.

She, nevertheless, revealed that Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr., Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, and Social Welfare Secretary Rolando Bautista are among those who will be joining the President as members of the Philippine delegation.

She said the three Cabinet secretaries’ presence is necessary since the DFA, the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development serve as lead agencies for the Asean’s political and security community pillar; economic pillar; and socio-cultural community pillar, respectively.

Regional security issues to be raised Mahilum-West noted that there would be two sessions during the main summit which will be held on November 26.

She said the first session would tackle the 30 years of cooperation between Asean and South Korea while the second session would focus on their connectivity.

Asean and South Korea first established sectoral dialogue relations in November 1989.

Mahilum-West said Southeast Asian leaders and Moon would also discuss “most pressing” regional security issues, including the Korean Peninsula.

She said the commemorative summit and other side events between Asean and South Korea are expected to conclude with two outcome documents.

“And these documents are the Asean-ROK Joint Vision Statement for Peace, Prosperity, and Partnership and the Co-Chairs’ Statement on the ASEANRepublic of Korea Commemorative Summit and these two represent the strong partnership between the Asean and ROK,” the Foreign Affairs official said.

Meanwhile, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo earlier confirmed that Duterte will hold a bilateral meeting with Moon on the sidelines of the commemorative summit.

The President on Tuesday said he and Moon would discuss security issues concerning the Southeast Asian bloc and South Korea.

RC CDO Premier launches I.D.E.A. 2019

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- November 22, 2019. The issue on the government’s War on Drugs has gripped the country into a complicated, continuous, and critical debate. Our government has taken a strong stand against the sale and use of drugs as it vows to put an end to its proliferation in our communities. Many quarters question the effectivity of the government’s efforts and raise serious concerns on the human rights violations resulting from the methods used in the war on drugs. In this year’s I.D.E.A. (An Invitational for Debate, Essay, and Art), high school students from all over Mindanao join the conversation and bring forward their perspective on how best to address this pressing issue.

I.D.E.A. 2019 is unlike other academic competitions both in scope and impact. It is the biggest and most influential multidisciplinary inter-school competition in Mindanao with over 200 junior high school students from

around 50 public and private schools from the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Lanao Del Norte, Lanao Del Sur, and Bukidnon and the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, Cotabato, Iligan, Ozamiz, Tangub, Malaybalay, and Valencia.

The Rotar y Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier, in cooperation with Acer Philippines and Zion Diagnostics, proudly brings back I.D.E.A. 2019 where the students will compete in 4 scholastic events: Debate, Essay, Editorial Cartoon and Painting. Donors may also opt to choose to buy a P500 gift card to share with their family, friends and colleagues to let them know that a donation to Smile Train has been made in their honor for the holidays. Last day of selling will be on December 24, 2019 and all collected donations will be forwarded to Smile Train.

In 2017, Seda hotels raised P349,700 and sponsored 29 children’s corrective clip and palete surgery.

Last year, the amount almost doubled to P 661,919, benefitting 55 kids.
