BUTUAN CITY – There are more males infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) compared to females in the Caraga Region, a top official of the Department of Health in the region (DOH-13) said. DOH-13 director Jose R. Llacuna, Jr. told Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Thursday that they have recorded a total of 705 HIV cases in the region as of June 2019. Of the total number of cases since 2014, 668 or 94.7 percent are males while 37 cases or 5.3 percent are females. Records show that the region recorded 63 cases in 2014 that increased to 86 in 2015; 95 cases in 2016; 121 cases in 2017; 158 in 2018; and, up to 705 cases as of June this year. He said most of HIV cases in the region are recorded in the province of Agusan del Norte, with 274 cases.

“The record in Agusan del Norte is high because of Butuan City with 210 cases,” he added. Recorded cases of HIV in provinces include 144 cases in Agusan del Sur that include 26 cases in Bayugan City; 140 cases in Surigao del Norte, including the 84 cases in Surigao City; 139 cases in Surigao del Sur, including the 26 cases in Tandag City and 29 cases in Bislig City; and four cases in the Province of Dinagat Islands. “The trend of the HIV cases in Caraga Region is going up,” Llacuna said, while also pointing out that HIV carriers in Caraga are getting younger. DOH-13 records show that 49 percent of those infected are aged 25 to 34 years old, and 33.5 percent are aged 15 to 24 years old. “Most were infected through sexual contact with 698 cases,” he said, adding that most of the sexual contacts they recorded that See REPORTED, page 10

ILIGAN City--Policemen are now tracking down the suspect responsible for the killing of one of the two siblings on Wednesday (November 20) night in Barangay Dagumba-an, Maramag town in Bukidnon. Police Major Gil Agpaoa, chief of Maramag Police Station, identified the victims as Joseph, 36; and Jesus Bodiongan, 34. Agpaoa said the victims were brought to a nearby

hospital but Joseph reportedly did not reach the hospital alive. He succumbed to a gunshot wound in the chest while Jesus was hit in his right leg. Initial police investigation said the siblings were on their way home from a neighbor’s wake where they served as cook, when they were attack by the suspect. DRINKING coffee reduces the risk of death from heart disease, diabetes or cancer, according to a certified medical research conducted recently. Added to that, it may extend life expectancy 10 times or more. A series of medical studies show that people who drink two to four cups of coffee a day had lower risk of death compared with those who didn’t drink coffee at all.

It was found out that drinking more cups of coffee every day reduces the chances of death from heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and cancer. The second study also revealed that those who drank more coffee had less chance to die early compared to those nondrinkers. It was noted as well that both studies found similar results for people who drank decaffeinated coffee.

Drinking a cup or two of coffee a day can be good if you are trying to lose weight and belly fat. Drinking coffee helps in losing weight and increases energ y expenditure. The importance of ejaculatory prayers

WE need to be more familiar with what are known as ejaculatory prayers, other wise known also as aspirations. They are short prayers that spring rather quite spontaneously from the heart that is going through the different situations in life—happy, sad, tense, tired, excited, bored, etc. They reflect one’s relation with God and are inspired by faith, hope and charity. To me, ejaculator y prayers are very helpful in quickly and easily putting ourselves in God’s presence, especially when we immerse ourselves deeply in the things of the world as we ought. They help us relate ourselves and everything that happens to us to God, again as we ought. They help us in keeping a spiritual and supernatural outlook as we go through the different events of the day. In short, they help in keeping us spiritually alive, and not just alive in the body and to the world.

They help us see things better in the sense that we just would not see them with our senses and our human understanding alone, but also and more importantly with our faith, which is what is ideal and proper to us. They somehow put us in an intimate relation with our Father God. With them we will never feel alone nor distant from God. My personal experience with ejaculatory prayers shows that they are very helpful even in making me calm and rested even in the middle of a tense situation for the mind or for the body. They help in making me breathe more deeply and thus give some relief. Also, not to forget is that they are very helpful in protecting and defending us from temptations and sin. They make the spiritual combat and ascetical struggle, so unavoidable in life, more manageable. They also help in pre-

paring us for the more serious forms in our relationship with God as when we have to do our prayers, our sacrifices and our recourse to the sacraments. We should all do our best to make it a habit to say ejaculatory prayers often during the day. Any short and earnest expression of our faith and piety will do. And also in this regard, the many vocal prayers that are already available can be very useful. The “Our Father’s,” “Hail Mary’s” and “Glory be’s” are truly helpful. We do not have to invent more prayers to be used as ejaculatory prayers. We may just even say, “Lord, I love you, I believe in you, I trust you,” or words to that effect. There are also many other prayers addressed to Our Lady, to St. Joseph, to St. Michael, and to other saints that can be used. The important thing is that they are said with sincerity of heart and

rectitude of intention. They definitely do not hamper us in our daily work and concerns. In fact, the contrary is true. They facilitate things a lot. This business of saying ejaculatory prayers often during the day should be taught to children as early as possible. You cannot imagine what great benefits they will enjoy when they learn to do it as a habit when they grow up and get exposed to all sorts of things. Let’s encourage everyone to do the same. There may be a little awkwardness in the beginning, but it’s not something that cannot be overcome. Especially when people experience the many benefits of the ejaculatory prayers, they will readily acquire the practice, since these prayers do not require a lot of effort to say them.

THE Monetary Board approved the revision to the definition of a deposit substitute to align the same with the provisions of the BSP Charter which was amended under Republic Act No. 11211. MANILA -- Customs officials at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Thursday destroyed 20 tons of goods in Trece Martires, Cavite. In a statement, Port of NAIA district collector Carmelita Talusan said the

condemnation proceeding is part of the Bureau of Customs’ (BOC) efforts to decongest their storage facilities. It is also in line with the directive of Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero to clear storage facilities of abandoned and illegally shipped items to better

RDRRMC XI member agencies assess relocation sites for relocation of Davao Region quake victims DAVAO CITY -- Five relocation sites out of seven areas recommended by the municipal government of Magsaysay, Davao del Sur were assessed and approved by the member-agencies of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council XI for the victims of the series of earthquakes in October. Agencies involved in the assessment are the National Housing Authority XI, Mines and Geosciences Bureau XI, Department of Social Welfare and Development XI, and Office of Civil Defense XI.

Three relocation sites in Barangay San Miguel, one in Barangay Malawanit and one in Clam Village, Barangay Poblacion Proper were found to be suited for transfer of displaced families from Barangay Tagaytay, Sitio Macabolos, Purok 6,7 and 8 of Barangay Tagaytay, Puro and 6 of Sitio B’lasan, Barangay Upper B’lasan and Purok 12 in Barangay Bahacanan. Donors may also opt to choose to buy a P500 gift card to share with their family, friends and colleagues to let them know that a donation to Smile Train has been made in their honor for the holidays. Last day of selling will be on December 24, 2019 and all collected donations will be forwarded to Smile Train.
