This is on top of the more than 30,000 odd jobs that would be created by downstream businesses, among which are support providers and suppliers like transport services, manpower agencies, stores, eateries, security, hardwares, parlors, etc.

The Use of Improvised Clinometer in Learning Trigonometry Author: REDULLA, JANETH A. (2020).

This study explored the effects of using Improvised Clinometer to students’ Performance in Mathematics. This mixed-method sequential explanatory research was conducted in Tangub City National High School during the fourth quarter of the school year 2019-2020. The quantitative aspect of this study employed the quasiexperimental pretest-posttest two-group design and thematic analysis was utilized in analyzing the qualitative data about students’ perception on the benefits of using Improvised Clinometer. During posttest of first and second trial run, the level of students’ performance in the experimental group consistently revealed to be moving towards mastery with an MPS of 69% and 67%, respectively, while control group indicated average with an MPS of 53% and 58%, respectively. Using One-Way Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), the study revealed that there is a significant difference in students’ performance

when they are taught using Improvised Clinometer (experimental) and using Outdoor Mathematics (control) in learning Trigonometry (f-ratio = 7.935, p-value < 0.05) during the first trial run and the second trial run (f-ratio=10.661 and p-value < 0.05). This outcome is supported by the two themes that are formulated after doing a thematic analysis about students’ perception on the benefits of using Improvised Clinometer in learning trigonometry: (1) Motivation and Engagement; and (2) Authentic Learning Activities. Another two themes that are formulated about students’ perceptions on outdoor mathematics:(1) Involvement; and (2) Active Participation. The findings of this research signified that the use of Improvised Clinometer significantly enhanced students’ performance in the learning process challenged educators to strengthen the utilization of the said manipulative in learning Trigonometry.

ICPO urges public to follow traffic laws as road incidents rise ILIGAN CITY, Nov. 18 (PIA) -- With the rising cases of road incidents in the city, the Iligan City Police Office (ICPO) called for the cooperation of the public in following traffic laws. No to excluding cooperatives on rice importation THE Cooperative Development Authority together with the 18,581 cooperatives throughout the country is strongly opposing the exclusion of cooperatives from rice importation We have come together with a firm collective intent and belief as pronounced in Sec. 15, Article 12 of the 1987 Constitution that the “State shall promote the viability and growth of cooperatives as instruments of equity, social justice and economic development.” Thus, we now stand as one cooperative movement to firmly oppose the systems and structures of oppression that have all these years imprisoned the peasantry from the quagmire of poverty, social injustice and inequities. Aptly called the “backbone” of the nation, yet, they have no strength as their daily life is characterized by so much inequity and social injustice. Yes, they do the back-breaking job of farming and have aged beyond their years, yet, they have not profited from farming. They till the land not their own and if they do, they do not control the mode of production,

more so, of marketing their products. They don’t even have seeds as these have to be bought from big agribusiness corporations, and so are the fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers are bought in Ukraine at only P50 per bag (Ammonium Sulfate), yet, when these reach the farmers in Mindanao, it is already sold to them at P1,500 to P2,000 pesos per bag. The Philippines is an agricultural country; any short or long term development can be won or lost through agriculture. But who controls? Who decides? Who Profits? Apparently, not the Filipino farmers but big corporations based on an insane ideology called corporate globalization! While the Philippines is producing high value crops, i.e., pineapple, banana, palm oil, etc. to satisfy the consumerist lifestyle of the people in the Northern Countries, we cannot even produce the basic staples for our people, i.e., rice and milk. Our choicest of lands are controlled by global corporations, that have transformed our lands into vast plantations using chemicals heavily, many of which are already banned

in other countries. Are you still wondering why many are dying of cancer? Perhaps it is about time to subject Philippine agriculture to some reflection and conscienticized analysis! While our farmers are producing rice at P13 to P15 per kilogram, yet we allowed the entry of cheap rice which is sold in our country at only P10 per kilogram because the farmers in Vietnam and Thailand had lowered down the production cost of rice to only P5 per kilogram. This was so because after the signing of the AFTA in 1997 in Cebu, no less than the King of Thailand took off his crown and robe and worked with the Thai farmers, telling them not to use chemical fertilizer as such kills the integrity of the soil. If possible, the King said, not to use tractors as the emissions contribute to climate change. He encouraged them to use carabaos because the wastes of the carabaos will fertilize the soil. More Ka Charo stories CHARLOTTE, North Carolina—I saw in my Facebook news feed the photos taken by veteran photojournalist and former media colleague Froilan Gallardo that he posted on his FB account showing the remains of Ka Charo that was brought to his hometown of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental. By the time this column gets printed, Ka Charo’s remains would have been interred already besides his parents at Tagoloan Catholic Cemetery. Ka Charo’s remains were brought from Zamboanga City to Barangay Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City then moved for a one night vigil at Taboc, Sta. Cruz in Tagoloan town. The remains were later brought for a two-night vigil at the Divine Shepherd funeral home also in Barangay Bulua before being moved back for burial at the Tagoloan Catholic Cemetery. Learning about this, my mind was transported back to the time after the late president Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law nationwide. During this time, Marcos issued Presidential Decree 538 that created the Philippine Veterans Investments Development Corp. (Phividec) Industrial Authority that was supposed to bolster the economies of the towns of

Tagoloan and Villanueva. The Phividec covered 13 barangays of the two towns and initially created some excitement among residents there who hoped that it would provide livelihood for them. Never mind the fact that had since been validated over time that the Phividec was instituted by Marcos to favor retired generals in the military who supported his strongman rule. The payment to lot owners was based on the prevailing property prices at the time. When it was created Phividec was heavily promoted by the Marcos regime as a venue to create livelihood opportunities for the residents covered by the industrial estate. Excitement turned to suspicion when property owners complained that the payment was too low per square meter. Some of them eventually accepted while others refused. Relocation was offered but some rejected by arguing that they cannot adjust to a new habitat in the mountains after years of living in the lowlands or near coastal areas. And the complaints that followed served as fodder for the activists, the lawyers and communist rebels to dig deep in their defiance of the Marcos regime, drawing the Church into their fight.

The Enhanced K to 12 Basic Education curriculum aims to develop students in mathematical ability and problem-solving skills. The enjoyment in learning Mathematics in the teaching and learning process is significantly essential. The current study investigated the learning experiences of high achieving students in Mathematics to encourage the teaching-learning process, create a positive outlook in learning, and give importance to acquired mathematical skills. In this study, fourteen (14) Junior and Senior High school students in Tangub City National High School responded and participated. These participants interviewed individually. A qualitative type of research design, hermeneutic phenomenological

approach to be specific with interview-guide questions for one on one interview was utilized. The thematic analysis used in analyzing the qualitative data, which revealed six themes, namely: positive attitudes toward Mathematics, independent learning and memory skills, parental encouragement and support, parental tutoring, teachers’ motivation, and teachers’ teaching strategy and style. Participants expressed that their experiences in learning have a significant contribution to their academic performance and achievement. Furthermore, the learning experiences and support of learners from their parents, teachers, and the peer have a positive outcome in both the teaching and learning process.

Adapting to these learning modalities has not been easy. While attending online classes at home, children rely heavily on parents and guardians to support them. However, parents and guardians are also facing different challenges to make ends meet. Some have difficulties in their current

work setup, while others have experienced loss of income and employment due to the lockdown and prolonged quarantine measures. Most of the 800,000 public school teachers struggle with the technological difficulties of conducting classes on the digital platforms, compared to the ease of using blackboards and whiteboards. Teachers’ access to laptop and desktop computers, including internet connection, is also a major challenge in conducting online classes. The DepEd also said that even for 687,911 teachers with computers at home, 41 percent or 280,531 of them do not have access to the internet, and 10 percent of them—71,128—said there is no internet signal in their area.

have all these years been tied up to a kind of farming where everyone is benefiting, i.e., the fertilizer and seed dealers, the compradors, the usurers – but not those who are doing the back breaking job of farming under the excruciating heat of the sun – the poor farmers! Not only have these corporations have massive rakings through rice tarrification. Presently, the corn farmers are now in horrible dilemma as there is now the massive entry of cheap corn substitutes such as wheat feeds that have brought down the price of corn to just P8 to P9 per kilogram. Such is a big debacle as the millions of corn farmers are producing corn at P11.50 per kilogram. Suicides, desperation, hunger and anger are now the common scenario in the rural areas. Again, the insane ideology called corporate globalization has done so much damage in the life of the Filipino farmers who are now leaving farming as 4 of 5 farmers, especially the young ones, are leaving farming, going to the urban centers to work as janitors, drivers, waiters or dancers highly congesting the cities. Today, our poor farmers who are now harnessing their collective power through their cooperatives are wondering why they are now excluded from importation of rice. Yes, they are the ones feeding the nation, thus, when there is not enough supply of rice, they should be the ones to import as their collective power through their federations have made them financially capable to do so! What rice smuggling are they talking about? That could have never happened if the CDA’s requirements were just simply followed!! A deeper analysis will tell us that when the economic dictatorship of rice cartel is grafted onto representative, electoral democracy, a toxic growth of religious fundamentalism and right-wing extremism is the result. Thus, corporate globalization leads not

just to the death of democracy but to the democracy of death in which exclusion, inequity and social injustice are brought to new heights. As the Cooperative Development Authority is mandated by the highest law of the land “to promote the viability of cooperatives as instruments of equity, social justice and economic development,” we are therefore opposing the exclusion of cooperatives on rice importation! Punish the guilty ones who have connived with unscrupulous rice traders especially those using the tax exemption of cooperatives. Many of these coops have already been delisted, dissolved and cancelled. But allow those whom the CDA has endorsed which have been issued the Special Certificate of Good Standing by our office. The CDA and the Cooperative movement have therefore come together with a firm collective intent to oppose such great social injustice to the Filipino farmers!

In the years since Branigin wrote the article, Ka Charo never questioned its validity. And in the years that passed, Phividec continues to be a source of controversy and resentment among the lot owners who claimed that they have yet to be fully paid by the government for their properties. The aim of molding individuals to become future ready is unachievable if the load of educating children is to be channeled solely to the shoulder of the parents. Parents seeking proper education to their children may sounds normal to many. While most parents’ purpose is to provide education to their children for a brighter future, it is also noted that parents need educators to inculcate values and behavioral development to their children. This pandemic affects our daily normal living including how education is delivered to learners. Undeniably, this leaves a bigger role and responsibilities to the

parents. Parents now have more opportunities to influence the lives of their children. Waking them up early and instructing them to go to school, preparing food, washing clothes and monitoring the behavior of their children in school are now widened to a more boundless task. The attributes, habits, and activities of children are now fully monitored by them. Parents play a key role in providing children with opportunities to learn, helping children make decisions and encourage them as they face struggles. Self-learning modules which are delivered by teachers would best serve if accompanied by the direction and guidance of the parents. Students are motivated to do well and aspire to reach their full potential when they feel supported. Paduganan said he was excited to have another Tagoloan native enter the PMA but his excitement was short lived with Ka Charo joining the communist NPA ranks and the irony was not lost on him and others who knew about it. As Boy Casino would say ‘Ka Charo chose a path less traveled.’ When I worked at the 6th Municipal Circuit Court of TagoloanVillanueva Misamis Oriental in the early 80s I would meet party litigants who name-dropped Ka Charo’s name when they were unsatisfied with the court rulings. One of them, a female litigant in a property dispute, told me that she would inform Ka Charo of the ruling. ‘Is Ka Charo your lawyer?, ‘ I asked the woman who replied in Visayan that ‘no, but he would make sure that justice is served to those oppressed who clamored for it.’ We continued to talk and it dawned on me that she talked about the Ka Charo I knew in my youth. I asked Tagoloan townmates what happened to him since I left the town and I remembered the young man who was an avid reader. And in my court work, I would often hear indigent litigants speak out Ka Charo’s name not in whispers but loudly enough for the disputing parties to hear. PS: I’ll tell more of what Ka Charo’s classmates said about him, the public hearing at Phividec and my eventual foray into local mainstream media at the time. -

Not recommending city wide lockdown The Inter Agency Task Force Against COVID 19 is not recommending reverting to an Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) or the 14-day citywide lockdown as requested by frontline health workers as it will gravely affect the economy of Davao City. Galvez recommended a granular lockdown based on barangays in the city which have contributed to the surge of COVID cases. Using metrics, the Department of Health has mapped out the barangays in the city which have spiked in COVID cases. These barangays are located along Davao River and along the coastal areas. Based on DOH data around 96 barangays (out of 182 barangays in Davao City) had reported COVID-19 cases in the past 14 days. And 35 out of the 96 barangays contributed 80% of the cases in the past 14 days. Among these city barangays included; Buhangin which had 114 cases in the past 14 days followed by Barangay 19-B with 91 (in the past 14 days), Talomo had 79, Agdao had 73 and Bucana with 69 cases. Galvez is also recommending going back to GCQ rather than a Modified General Community Quarantine (MGQ) as it allows social gatherings which would bring about the resurgence of COVID cases. He said National Capital Region doesn’t want to return to MGCQ as the Mayors fear it would lead again to the spike in cases. Currently from 24,000 active COVID-19 cases, NCR now only has 2,700 active cases. He also said there must be a strict observance of minimum health protocols particularly in business and in public transportations like PUJs where behavior such as talking, eating and using cellphones must be forbidden so that the virus would not spread among the co-passengers. IT was the Rotary Club of Gwangju North from South Korea of RI District 3710 which was the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oroâ€™s international partner in applying for its first global grant from The Rotary Foundation. It can be recalled that Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro turned over a global grant to the Philippine Red Cross

By working together to respond to real community needs, clubs and districts strengthen their global partnerships. Global grants have a minimum budget of $30,000

and a maximum World Fund award of $400,000. Grant sponsors can use a combination of District Designated Funds (DDF), cash, and/or directed gifts and endowment earnings to fund a global grant. The Foundation will provide a 100 percent World Fund match for all DDF contributions. In this case, the global grant was applied during the time of immediate past president Julino Dulfo in 2019. Past RI District 3870 governor and district Rotary Foundation chair Manuel Along recalled that it was during a training among fellow Rotary Foundation district chairs in Clark last March 2019 that they were encouraged to apply for the global grant. Along, who is organic to the Rotary

Club of Cagayan de Oro, then met with Dulfo so they could apply for a global grant. It so happened that Philippine Red Cross CDOMisOr chapter chair Antonio Soriano also happened to be a member of the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro. And so it was decided that the global grant, once approved, will be

turned over to the Philippine Red Cross CDO-MisOr chapter. The global grant that they applied for was to be used to install a blood bank refrigerator, a plasma freezer, an incubated platelet agitator, a tube sealer and a T-seal mobile. These are equipment that will increase capacity to store blood at the blood center and replace antiquated equipment.
