US senator ‘grandstanding’ on issue he doesn’t know -Andanar By AZER PARROCHA PNA

Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar

MANILA -- US senator Bernie Sanders is ‘grandstanding’ by denouncing the alleged human rights abuses made by the Philippine government despite not knowing the details, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar said Sunday. In a Tweet linking a post from the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Sanders said “repression of trade unionists is a shameful attempt to silence people’s rights and freedoms.” Andanar, however, said Sanders remark was “abhorrent” since he failed to look at the facts on the ground. “What we find abhorrent is that Senator Bernie Sanders and the ITUC refuse to closely look at the facts at

Toll free calls to Bantay-Bata 163 for Globe subscribers begin By MA. CRISTINA ARAYATA PNA

GLOBE customers can call ABSCBN Foundation’s Bantay-Bata 163 hotline for free beginning Monday. This was made possible after the two entities announced a partnership at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig last November 7. “I am a father of three, and I still remember the day my first child was born. So I don’t understand why children are being abused,” said Globe chief commercial officer Albert de Larrazabal.

The partnership, he said, is Globe’s little way of making it easier for the needy to seek assistance. A video presentation was shown during the launch in BGC, Taguig City, wherein the late ABS-CBN Foundation chief Gina Lopez said that the concept of Bantay-Bata #163 started when she saw a news item, wherein a child was beaten and eventually died. Lopez said there should have been a number that the child or any witness could have called. See FREE, page 11

The PCOO chief justified anew the joint operations conducted by police and military personnel in offices of activist groups who were suspected to be militants in Bacolod City and Metro Manila last October 31. Andanar emphasized that the raids were “peaceful and precise that no individuals were hurt” and that “authorities did not act rashly in any way and See ISSUE, page 11
