US senator ‘grandstanding’ on issue he doesn’t know -Andanar

MANILA -- US senator Bernie Sanders is ‘grandstanding’ by denouncing the alleged human rights abuses made by the Philippine government despite not knowing the details, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar said Sunday.

In a Tweet linking a post from the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Sanders said “repression of trade unionists is a shameful attempt to silence people’s rights and freedoms.”

Andanar, however, said Sanders remark was “abhorrent” since he failed to look at the facts on the ground.

IMPASUGONG, Bukidnon-The Municipality of Impasugong in partnership with the Philippine Army’s 8th Infantry Battalion, 4th Infantry Division and other agencies reached out to the people of Sitio Intavas, Barangay Kibenton, Impasugong through the “Magbuliga Kuy” program.

Magbuliga Kuy aims to bring government services closer to communities for them to feel the presence of the government.

The program includes Kasalan ng Bayan, distribution of seedlings, animal deworming, free birth registration, free police clearance, free medical and dental service, and other services of different government offices and agencies.

DA recognizes R-10 Corn, Cassava Achievers in Iloilo confab ILOILO CITY, November 12 - The Department of Agriculture (DA) continues to recognize the bolstered partnership with the local government units and farmer-organizations, including from Region 10, in furthering the corn and cassava industries, as it honors its achievers nationwide.

Simultaneously held in a ceremony, DA acknowledged the corn and cassava industry players through its staged 7th National Quality Corn Achievers Awards (NQCAA), 3rd Cassava Cluster Management Excellence Awards (CCMEA), and 3rd Cornucopia Awards.

How Revenue Management Affects… Sales

HOW revenue management affects every part of your business.

In most of talks I have always mentioned it is my belief that ‘Revenue Managers Rule the World’. Tongue in cheek I know, but what I really mean by it is that Revenue Management impacts every part of your business and as such, should be a highly valued skill.

We now live in an era where the role of a Revenue Manager is (mostly) given the kudos, training and mentoring it deserves but not always… And that lack of understanding is costing your business.

Let’s look at the impact Revenue should have on Sales. Our goal is to maximise profitability but to do that we need to have the

buy-in from all departments and Sales are often seen as the revenue generating department, but are they concentrating on the right revenue?

With my hotel sales background, I totally understand the targets and being very focused on delivering great business, but too often, Sales people just don’t understand what is actually ‘great business’. That is where the Revenue Manager comes in and both Sales and Revenue really should be working on the same strategy and working together.

Let us take the scenario of a Sales Manager securing business from a corporate at a contracted rate and bringing perhaps 700 room nights into your property over the course of 1 year. Is

this great business? When will these guests stay? which night of the week? what length of stay? when will they book? how will they book? direct? through an agent? through an OTA? what is the cost of sale? what is their estimated incremental spend? will they eat and drink in the property? do they have any meeting room requirements? These are all questions that a good Sales Manager should be asking to assess whether or not the hotel actually needs or wants this business or whether it actually has the potential of displacing higher valued business.

Taking a step back… what really should happen is that the Sales Manager and the Revenue Manager should sit down and agree

on the strategy for the hotel in the first place. The Sales Manager should understand when the hotel needs tour groups and when it doesn’t.

What rates these groups need to pay and what is a ‘walk rate’. What negotiables they can offer (ten complimentary upgrades as an example). What days of the week can absorb a hit on rate and which days the rates need to be protected.

And of course, it is not just the rate that this new business brings but also about the incremental spend that is predicted and more See SALES, page 11

Hounded by bad thoughts and images?

CASES like this are getting plenty. I am referring to those individuals who have succeeded in converting from their colorful past but are still being assailed, almost constantly, by bad thoughts and images of the past, with matching feelings.

Especially in their weak moments, when they are alone and tired, about to sleep or have just woken up, they feel the assault sharply, and it seems that their efforts to ward them off aren’t enough. There are times when they want to give up, and in fact, from time to time, they fall.

I usually advise them not to worry at all, since worrying will just make things worse. Instead, with great confidence, they just have to continue to pray, asking

always for God’s grace, and to try not to mind those thoughts and images.

I tell them to repeat many vocal prayers, looking piously at holy images, clutching a crucifix more tightly, kissing “stampitas” more devoutly, sprinkling holy water, etc. I encourage them to just ride out the storm, letting those thoughts, images, and feelings to play out in the end, spent and exhausted.

In the worst scenario, it may also be more practical to make the radical sacrifice of getting up immediately, taking a shower, doing some exercises or corporal mortifications. But never give those bad thoughts and images any opening by making the mind and heart, body and soul idle and empty in

Life, we are told, is a constant warfare. We can hardly expect any truce, since the enemies of God and, therefore, also of our soul, will always try to frustrate God’s loving designs for us. The devil, the sinful world, and our own wounded flesh will always be in conspiracy against us.

THE surprise offer of President Rodrigo R. Duterte to Vice-President Leonora Robredo to sit in the government’s anti-drug war command after her months of lambasting the administration’s campaign perplexed the public, experts and ordinary folks, no end.

the series of strong quakes greatly affected their daily living. That’s why we prioritized the immediate approval of granting calamity assistance to extend financial help to our members and pensioners in the affected areas,” Ignacio said.

Qualified members and pensioners are those with home address or property in earthquake-stricken areas declared by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) under the state of calamity and who suffered losses or damages to

their properties in calamity-stricken areas namely the provinces of Davao del Sur and North Cotabato; Kidapawan City; and the municipalities of Bansalan and Matanao in Davao del Sur, and the municipalities of Makilala and Tulunan in Cotabato.

The SSS has allotted more than P443 million worth of calamity loan to more than 54,000 potential borrowers residing in the earthquake-stricken areas.

To avail of the calamity loan, a member should have at least 36 monthly contribu-

tions, six of which should be paid within the 12 month period before the date of application. The loanable amount is equivalent to the one month salary credit (MSC) which is computed based on the average of the last 12 monthly salary credit (MSC) or the total amount of damages as certified by the member in the application form, rounded up to the nearest thousand, whichever is lower. Interested members are also required to be registered on My.SSS for billing purposes.

P1-B unclaimed PCSO prizes to fund medical aid program

MANILA -- Around PHP1 billion unclaimed sweepstakes prizes were forfeited and will be transferred to fund the Individual Medical Assistance Program (IMAP) of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO).

Speaking with reporters on Monday, PCSO General Manager Royina Garma said the IMAP was given more allocation after the PCSO’s Charity Fund increased due to the forfeiture of the unclaimed prizes.

She said the forfeited prizes were from traditional sweepstakes -- lotto, Keno and six-digit games. “‘Yun unclaimed winnings will be forfeited pag hindi nila na-claim after one year, automatic mapupunta sa Charity base sa aming Charter fund kung saan yung allocation for IMAP (The unclaimed winnings are automatically forfeited a year after the winners failed to claim their prizes. This is in accordance with our Charter. All the forfeited prizes immediately go to our Charity Fund, where we get the allocation for IMAP),” Garma told reporters covering the PCSO during a courtesy call in her office in Mandaluyong City.

According to Garma, some bettors just buy lotto tickets for charity purposes.

“Most of our bettors buy lotto tickets because they just want to help. It is because they know that PCSO’s charity program helps a lot of our poor kababayans who do not have money to buy medicines or get confined in hospitals,” she said.

MANILA -- The Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Monday warned anew would-be overseas Filipinos workers (OFWs) against unscrupulous persons using the internet and social media to illegally recruit workers abroad.

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente issued the warning after learning that many human trafficking and illegal recruitment victims intercepted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) were recruited

by syndicates offering their services via Facebook and social networking sites.

“We reiterate our warning to our kababayans that they should avoid transacting with strangers online offering high paying jobs in foreign lands without the benefit of protection from the government. You will only be putting yourselves in harm’s way,” he said in a statement.

The BI chief added that those who are looking to work abroad can always access the website of the Philippine Overseas Em-

ployment Administration (POEA) or visit its office to look for legitimate job openings and avail the services of licensed or accredited recruitment agencies.

“Do not deal with unlicensed recruiters as they cannot guarantee your safety, good working conditions, and salaries according to industry standards. Chances are you will be intercepted at our ports if you avail the services of fraudsters and illegal recruiters,” Morente said.

AllHome nets P746.2-M in 9 months MANILA -- AllHome Corp., a pioneering one-stop shop home store in the Philippines, booked a record growth of 225 percent in net income for the first nine months of 2019 to PHP746.2 million from PHP229.7 million in the same period last year.

The company said its total revenues also increased by 72 percent to PHP8.2 billion from PHP4.8 billion.

“Allhome continues to deliver solid performance which brings us closer to our full year target. As we have previously mentioned, the home improvement industry in the Philippines is still underpenetrated and we are taking advantage of such by aggressively opening Allhome to more locations across the country,” AllHome chairman Manuel Villar Jr. said in a statement.

Camille Villar, vice chairman of AllHome, said they are “very much on track” with their store expansion program for this year and 2020.

“We aim to at least double our net selling space by end 2020. Expansion is focused on Mega Manila for now, but the longer-term plan is to bring AllHome to the rest of the Philippines,” she said.

Earthquake preparedness in the Philippines

ACCORDING to DILG, every household must be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed when dealing with earthquakes and other major disasters.

Stockpile at least 15 liters of water per person per day for drinking, cooking and sanitary purposes.

Keep a sufficient supply of MRE for at least 72 hours up to preferably two weeks of individual consumptions. Prepare Go bags with potable bottled water, non-perishable meals, emergency kit, important family documents, flashlight, portable radio and clothes at the minimum.

Prepare a family evacuation plan i.e. where to meet and maintenance of

a directory of emergency contact numbers. We are lucky here in Cagayan de Oro City because the universal emergency number here is easy to memorize – 911.

Have at least one family member who is trained in basic life support, use of fire extinguishers and other life saving skills.

Stay indoors if you are already in a house or a structurally-sound building. Duck, cover and hold on to something sturdy.

Evacuate to a safe open space after the shaking stops. While earthquakes cannot really be predicted, households can still reduce the risks and possible damages by proper planning and careful preparation.

However, members who have been granted any final benefit claim such as total permanent disability or retirement, as well as those who have any outstanding balance under the Loan Restructuring Program (LRP) or previous calamity loan are not qualified to avail of the said loan program.

The SSS Chief also reiterated that OFW-members or seafarers who reside within the declared calamity area

are also qualified to avail of the calamity loan. An authorization letter should be issued to their authorized representatives to apply for CLAP on their behalf.

“Member-applicants should also submit a Barangay Certification as proof that they are residents of the declared calamity area,” added Ignacio.

Meanwhile, Social Security and Employees’ Compensation pensioners whose

residence are in the said calamity areas may apply for a three-month advance pension. Applicants should submit an application for Assistance Due to Calamity/Disaster duly-certified by the Barangay Chairman.

The SSS has identified more than 1,800 potential pensioners in declared calamity areas with an average monthly pension for three months of P15,900 who may avail the advance

three-month pension.

“However, retiree pensioners with existing pension loans are not qualified to apply for the advance three-month pension,” Ignacio said.

Aside from the calamity loan, calamity- stricken members may also borrow up to a maximum of P1 million under the Direct House Repair and Improvement Loan Program, with an annual interest rate of eight

percent for loan amounts up to P450,000 and nine percent for loan amounts for more than P450,000.

To qualify for Direct House Repair and Improvement Loan, an applicant must not be more than 60 years old and with at least 24 monthly contributions, in which three contributions are within the last 12-month period prior to the month of filing.

“According to NDRRMC reports, more than 37,000 houses in the declared calamity areas were either partially or totally damaged. I enjoin all qualified members of SSSS and pensioners to go to the nearest SSS branch so they can avail of this benefit”, Ignacio concluded.

Filing of application for CLAP and advance-three month pension is until February 17, 2020, while Direct House Repair and Improvement Loan application is until November 17, 2020.

Tuesday, November 19, 2019 part, in 2017 the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCII) donated a drug rehab center to Ormoc City in the Visayas. However, the Chinese government also has a pledge to donate one for the Visayas.

The most significant of China’s assistance has come by way of the collaborative effort of the Philippine government anti-smuggling and anti-drugs agencies’ coordination with China’s authorities. The classic achievement of this collaboration is the May 2017 600-kilogram drug bust on the strength of a tip from Xiamen, China, customs officials. The drug bust was worth P 6.4-billion.

Despite the success, detractors twisted the news reports to make it appear as a negative development against the administration.

Cooperation with China has been high on President Duterte’s priorities and in his priority anti-illegal drugs campaign China has indeed been a boon. The Department of Foreign Affairs in a 2017 document quote President Duterte saying that “China is the only country to come out freely and issue a firm statement that they are supporting the fight against drugs in my country.”

Now, Vice-President Robredo wants to bring in the US drug authorities to help. We look at this with caution as the US in the past three years have invariably shown hostility to President Duterte and done some harm to his ef-

forts in the anti-drugs war by casting severe criticisms and obstructing it using “human rights” issues to block efforts to purchase arms for various government purposes including its use in anti-drug operations.

Having stated that concern, we can also say that a sincere effort by the US can indeed be helpful. A recent report of US cooperation with China in cracking down on Fentanyl trafficking into the U.S. by nefarious Chinese gangs has been very encouraging.

In a first, US and Chinese cooperation succeeded in breaking a Fentanyl gang and putting nine traffickers in China. This should put President Trump’s hyped fears at ease.

But the US in the antiillegal drug war of many countries presents a dilemma, as it has been shown in the past that the CIA has been doing underground what the US government has been fighting above ground. In 2017 Juan Pablo Escobar Hanao, son of the notorious drug boss of the Medellin Cartel Pablo Escobar revealed that his father “worked for the CIA selling cocaine”.
