MANILA – The head of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) said the government will continue to respect media freedom in the country as the Philippines joins the international community in observing World Press Freedom Day. “Asahan niyo po na patuloy na irerespeto ng Duterte administration ang press freedom sa bansa, taliwas sa mga alegasyon ng iilan (Rest assured that the Duterte administration will continue to respect media freedom in the Philippines contrary to the allegations of some groups),” Secretary Martin Andanar said in a statement Friday.

Among the efforts to prove this is the creation of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security or PTFoMS, approved and signed

by President Rodrigo R. Duterte on the first month of his term, Andanar said.

The PTFoMS was created through Administration Order 01 to address media killings and harassments.

Bong Go asks nationalists, Muslim leaders to help in Duterte’s anti-corruption drive FORMER Special Assistant to the President and 2019 senatorial candidate Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go on Wednesday appealed to a group of nationalists and Muslim leaders to help President Rodrigo Duterte eradicate corruption in government.

Go made the call in his message during the Assemblia ng mga Anak ng Bayan in Museo De Padilla, the ancestral house of the family of actor Robin Padilla in Fairview, Quezon City that has been turned into an events place. It was Robin himself who led the gathering.

Go told the group that he hopes they would follow the example of Robin who was one of the first to volunteer his help to then Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte simply because the actor believes in him and what he stands for.

“Alam nyo nagboluntaryo po siyang (Robin) pumunta

kay Mayor Duterte noong 2015. Alam nyo, kokonti pa lang ang naniniwala kay Mayor Duterte noong mga panahon na iyon. Isa po siya sa unang nagboluntaryo ng libre. Sabi niya: naniniwala ako sa inyo Mayor Duterte at sa iyong ipinaglalaban,” Go recalled.

“Iisa po ang kanilang ipinaglalaban—yung pagsisilbi sa bayan,” he added, noting President Duterte admires Padilla’s selfless acts to serve the country.

The former SAP noted that Padilla had never asked for any personal favor from President Duterte.

Go assured them that he too, supports President Duterte’s effort to bring genuine change in the country, particularly the campaign against illegal drugs, criminality and corruption.

“Kung masaya kayo (sa pamamahala ni Pangulong Duterte) ipagpapatuloy natin yung pagbabago ( na nasimulan) niya,” Go said.

Go noted that there were times when President Duterte would show his exasperation about the progress of the anti-corruption campaign.

“Si Pangulong Duterte, minsan naiinis na po siya sa corruption na walang tigil..

Hindi tayo aasenso kung hindi tayo magtutulungan.

Pwede ninyong ibulong sa amin, pwede natin i-entrap yan... para po makarating kay Pangulong Duterte.

It could be recalled that Go earlier told the public that if they have any information or complaint against corrupt officials, they can ask his help, or the Truth and Justice Coalition formed with Greco Belgica and the Presidential AntiCorruption Commission.

ISULAN, Sultan Kudarat – Military and election officials foresee a peaceful and orderly May 13 elections in nearby Datu Abdullah Sangki town of Maguindanao province after candidates for various posts signed a peace covenant Thursday.

2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion (MIB), and Maguindanao election supervisor Ernie Palanan led the gathering of local candidates who pledged against violence and vowed to help in the conduct of peaceful polls.

From my experience as a math teacher, being a little creative can go a long way in the classroom.

Humor and connecting math to the real world also helps. Below are some of my teaching strategies for motivating students to learn.

Game Play-I once taught a high school geometry class with some tough kids in it. One day, I brought in large colored labels, and had the students move all the desks and chairs to the corners of the room. I placed two long rows of colored labels on the floor. Then I asked the most disruptive student to make and throw a paper airplane, using the labels as a runway for landing it. This was a hands-on lesson on the locus (set) of points equidistant from two parallel lines.

Assignment?-Yes, they really did! When teaching a unit on Geometry and Measurement to a

seventh grade class, I presented creative, real-world problems at the chalkboard.

We solved one problem on area of a circle by standing in a circle with a stick and some string. As I went to assign homework from the textbook, the class eagerly asked if they could create their own problems instead. They were so enthusiastic that I changed the assignment. The next day, the students proudly read their problems aloud --even those who rarely did their homework! The instructional value of this student-created assignment proved to be far more than I had expected!

Facilitator- After introducing prime and composite numbers through 100, I asked my class to determine if the numbers 517, 623 and 641 were prime or composite. Students groaned about having to find all the factors of these large numbers. I offered to let them use calculators to

speed up the process, but they still groaned. Finally, the class asked if there was a a better way to do this. So I introduced divisibility tests, and they were happy to learn this new topic!

Seizing- I was in the middle of teaching a math lesson, when a student asked me “When are we ever going to use this math?” He seemed quite serious, so I stopped the lesson, and gave an example of how farmers use systems of linear equations to calculate the costs of cultivating crops. This inspired me to include numerous career connections on my CD. Decision- Kids take real ownership when allowed to make decisions. But what decisions can we entrust them with? At the beginning of each marking period, I assign students to cooperative learning groups. I choose the partners for each group, but each group gets to choose a unique group name. Thus, each group has made its first joint decision.

Dissing Disappointments – A Teacher’s Guide

Everyone gets disappointed at some points in their lives. It’s a common thing, and by that, it could always be like any form of disappointment is just right at the corner of your block waiting for you to stumble upon it. But, how we respond to disappointments could mean a huge impact to how our lives will turn out. When we are disappointed, it could only be two things: people or things fail to meet our expectations, or we haven’t met our own expectations. We need to deal with disappointments whether we like it or not, and they could be factors that help determine our success in life.

Expectations are nothing but chains of rules.

These chains are bonded

and linked to each other, and they do not break easily.

Such disappointments could possibly dictate failures in processes, hopes that turned out to be expectations, or more. Disappointments only happen when you set something for yourself or for others, and they end up not being met.

So when you get disappointed, what do you do?

Do you throw tantrums at people? Do you keep quiet in one corner? Or, do you do something to alleviate the situation? Most people who are overtly stressed out with work, or other things tend to become violent either passively or aggressively to people, or to themselves.

However, for those who have a rather positive outlook on disappointments, they tend to sit down, gather people around, and talk about what’s the best way to solve the issue.

When people complain a lot about disappointments, they do not really add anything to solving the problem quickly. Easier said than done, but what’s happened has already happened. We can’t look back and sulk over it for too long because time moves fast, and it moves forward.

Therefore, the only move is forward – to move on, reflect, and learn from disappointments.

Dealing with disappointments call for people to be more understanding with each other, and the circumstances. Once you understand the root of it all, and the result of it all, you can easily begin to start applying changes to avoid the same trouble to come knocking on your door. Thus, hope happens that disappointments would be minimized in the future.

I was very happy to be invited to the “moving up and recognition day” of the Birthright Educators Foundation, Inc. last April 26 and to witness the significant strides that the school has made since its founding in 1993.

Birthright was the very first special private elementary school in Muntinlupa City dedicated to the the needs of autistic children and other children with intellectual disabilities.

Its founders - Teacher Miriam del Rosario and her husband Pastor Jun came to my office at the Muntinlupa city hall one day and asked if I could help kick start the school which the couple wanted to incorporate as a non-profit foundation.

I did not need much convincing. I immediately wrote a check for P68,000 part of the proceeds of my annual Mayor Toting Bunye Invitational golf tournament. Instinctively, I said to myself: This will probably be one of the most meaningful social investments I will ever make.

My instinct proved correct. Years later, I received

an unexpected email from Mrs. Rhodora “Dory” Mandap. At that time, Dory was a teacher at Itaas Elementary School. She is now the principal at the Cupang Elementary School in Muntinlupa.

She wrote about Lylette, her daughter, a special child, whom I helped enroll at Birthright.

“Dalagang dalaga na po si Lylette although she will forever be my baby.

Continuous po pag-aaral nya sa Birthright. Nasa prevocational class po sya.

Accdg to teacher Miriam del Rosario, she’s no longer capable of continuing through the high school curriculum kaya life skills na ang itinuturo sa kanya.

“She’s a good cook now.

She can also bake. Her specialty and best seller: double chocolate oatmeal cookies. At kung dati ay hindi nagsasalita....pagkadaldal naman ngayon! Thank you so much for your help.”

Zherwin “Bong” Balota was one of the first four students of Birthright. More than 20 years ago, Bong was a problem boy, aged 9, with practically zero skills. Bong used to walk aimlessly around Parkhomes Village

in Tunasan, Muntinlupa, (where Birthright is located), ringing door bells, sometimes throwing stones at passersby and sometimes pilfering articles from sari sari stores when their owners were not watching.

No one ever imagined, except perhaps for Teacher Miriam and Pastor Jun, that one day Bong would grow up into a responsible adult.

Teacher Miriam and Pastor Jun knew that deep within Bong was a potential which only needed to be unlocked.

Bong eventually graduated from the vocational program where he learned to cook, do housework, and other practical skills. Bong is now a teacher aide and monitor at Birthright.

There is also the case of RJ Gongora, who overcame a severe speech defect. He is now a teacher at Birthright. Melissa Tabalingcos similarly overcame initial handicaps and is now a fitness trainer for movie personalities and other professionals. Jan Christopher Hernandez who could hardly speak at 3 years old, eventually finished Bachelor of Science in Accountancy with flying colors!

Birthright started its first outreach with informal settlers along the railroad track in the RMT area of Barangay Tunasan. When the informal settlers were relocated by the government, Birthright ‘adopted’ the old dumpsite in Southside, San Pedro, Laguna.

Bir t hr ig ht now has three centers in San Pedro, Laguna. The first is the HALMS Center where young children at- risk are being prepared for school.

The second is the Family Center where mothers and teen-agers congregate weekly for values formation and life coaching.

The third - Mt. Olives Turf of Hope - is where Birthright hopes to put up its future high school.

The good work done by Birthright has not gone unnoticed. Some of its projects are now undertaken with the assistance of See LIVES, page 11

-oooAND KNK NOW ON ITS 12TH YEAR OF “PROCLAIMING” AND “SAVING”: To our regular readers in this “Kakampi Mo Ang Batas” column, I am profusely apologizing. We have not been coming out with this column in the newspapers which have been publishing it in Luzon, Visayas, ang Mindanao, and even in Facebook, for a couple of weeks or days now.

The problem that caused this was my having devoted much of my time, during those days, to the preparations for the recently-concluded 12th annual commemoration of the establishment of the Biblical works of “proclaiming” and “saving” that is being pursued by the AND KNK, or the Children of God Blood Kin of the Christ Church (Simbahang Anak ng Diyos Kadugo Ni Kristo) Thank God in the Name of Jesus because the commemorative activities of the AND KNK were suc-

cessfully and triumphantly carried out from April 26, 2019 to April 28, 2019, at Timaan’s Place, a resort located at Baloy Beach, Olongapo City, Zambales.

This three-day event marked the most meaningful activity undertaken so far by the leaders and members of the AND KNK (who are calling themselves “blood kin of the Christ”, or Kadugo, in Filipino). The pictures of the event can be accessed at www.facebook.com/attybatas.

-oooGOD HIMSELF PUT UP THE AND KNK IN THE PHILIPPINES: From the collective point of view of the members of AND KNK, or the Simbahang Anak ng Diyos Kadugo Ni Kristo (or the Children of God Blood Kin of the Christ Church), it was God Himself who built or put up this Church in the Philippine, to fulfill His purposes before the end of the world comes around. We, the members of AND KNK, believe that this Church was called and put up by God even before creation to fulfill what He has willed.

AND KNK is now hotly pursuing two kinds of work in the Philippines and in the whole world. These are the works of “proclaiming” and “saving” anchored

on the truth that Jesus is God and Savior and is God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as clearly written in the Bible. Members of the Church believe that the proof of this claim are given by Jesus Himself, in His manifestations as the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and even by His disciples and the people who did not believe Him. Downpour fails to dampen welcome for Bong Go in Tarlac City; former SAP vows to help spur tourism and economic development TARLAC CITY – A sudden downpour failed to dampen the enthusiastic reception of residents here to former Special Assistant to the President and 2019 senatorial candidate Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go who went around the city in a motorcade Wednesday afternoon.

Go’s convoy started going around the city under the hot summer sun but later a thunderstorm struck, bringing heavy rains. Yet, many of the residents came out in the streets, chanting his name and waving back at him, some with umbrellas while most did not mind the pouring rain, as well as an occasional flash of lightning and the crack of thunder.

Before the motorcade, Go met with community leaders of the province and assured them that the Duterte administration will continue to support the province’s development.

magiging tulay ninyo kay Pangulong Duterte,” he said.

With barely two weeks more to go before the May 13, 2019 elections, Go said he would continue going around the country up to the last minute of the campaign period.

Earlier, Go had vowed to reach out to the ordinary Filipino people, particularly the victims of fire and other calamities, to hear their concerns and find out how he could be of help to them.

According to Go, he would continue supporting projects of the Duterte administration that would help spur economic activity in Central Luzon, including Tarlac, such as the booming ecotourism in the province that would help generate revenues for the local government and provide job and business opportunities for its people.

City to Caalibangbangan in Cabanatuan City that would shorten travel time between the two destinations from the current 1 hour and 10 minutes to just 20 minutes.

The project is slated to be completed by 2020.

In addition, Go said there is also the Capas-Botolan Road project, consisting of a 63-km. East-West road connecting Capas, Tarlac and Botolan in Zambales, cutting travel time from over 3 hours to only 1 hour and 20 minutes. The P5.9 billion project is targeted for completion in 2022.

Go also pointed to the TPLEX Extension project, a P23.9-billion, 59.4-km. toll road from the last exit of the TPLEX in Rosario, La Union and will terminate at San Juan, La Union. This project is meant to promote the further development of Northern Luzon.

Sara not keen on filing charges against Bikoy video uploader DAVAO CITY -- Mayor Sara Z. Duterte is not interested in filing charges against the uploader of the controversial Bikoy videos, who was arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

In a press statement on Thursday, Mayor Sara said, “He is just a fool -no depth. I cannot speak for other members of the

family.”

Bikoy is a hooded figure who claimed to be a former record-keeper of a narcotics ring operating in Southern Luzon and the Visayas.

He linked former Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go and presidential son and former Davao City vice mayor Paolo Duterte

to the illegal drug trade in the video clip dubbed “Ang Totoong Narco-list”.

Bikoy also claimed -without providing any evidence – that he used to keep financial records for the drug syndicate that allegedly had dealings with the Duterte family.

The bank cited by Bikoy in his video denied the latter’s claims.

In the past months, law enforcement agencies have stepped up the investigation into the organized disinformation campaign being waged against President Rodrigo Duterte and his family.

Local markets rise after PH’s ratings upgrade

MANILA -- Both the Philippine peso and the Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) resumed trading on a high note Thursday, two days after S&P Global Ratings’ unprecedented upgrade of the country’s investment grade rating to ‘BBB+” with Stable outlook.

The local currency finished the day at 51.87, better than its 52.105 close last Tuesday. There was no trad-

ing on Wednesday because of the Labor Day holiday.

It opened the day at 51.77 from 52.1 in the previous session.

It traded between 51.87 and 51.945, resulting in an average of 51.82.

Metro Pacific core profit hits P3.66-B in Q1

MANILA -- Infrastructure conglomerate Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC) said on Thursday that its first-quarter core net income ended little changed compared to the same period last year, driven by expansion across its businesses.

In a press briefing, MPIC President and Chief Executive Officer Jose Ma. Lim

said its consolidated core net income reached PHP3.660 billion in January to March from PHP3.646 billion last year.

Mangudadatu is optimistic that attaining peace in Mindanao is not farfetched, banking on the full implementation of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), which he supports to give the south a respite from the wars and lift the people from the bondage of poverty.
