Duterte asks Congress to ‘fully protect’ rights of workers
MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte on Labor Day called on Congress to approve measures that would “fully protect” the rights of Filipino workers. In his Labor Day message released on Wednesday (May 1), Duterte expressed hope that the order he issued last year will finally be passed by Congress. “I remain optimistic that one year since I issued Executive order No. 51 implementing existing constitutional and statutory provisions against illegal contracting, my counterparts in Congress will consider passing much needed legislative measures that will fully protect our workers’ rights, especially to security of tenure and self-organization,” he said. Over 400K employees regularized under Duterte admin: DOLE By FERDINAND PATINIO
MANILA — Over 400,000 workers from the private sector have been regularized since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office in 2016. Data from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) show that for the period 20162018, a total of 413,940 workers have been regularized. Of the figure, 291,612 benefitted from voluntary regularization and
122,328 were regularized through inspection. The DOLE issued Department Order No. 174, Series of 2017, which is the new implementing rules and regulations of Articles 106 to 109 of the Labor Code, as amended. DO 174-17 is a product of comprehensive and inclusive area-wide consultations involving all sectors (i.e. formal, informal, public, migrant, women, and youth). See EMPLOYEES, page 11
