DTI to test questionable steel bars sold in AgSur Since
1923

SAN Francisco, Agusan del Sur--The provincial office of the Department of Trade and Industry will verify the authenticity of Product Standard Certificates provided by the two hardware stores in two towns of this province selling questionable reinforced steel bars. Jose Baron Jr., DTI acting provincial director, said they will take samples of steel bars sold by the two business establishment to be submitted to the central office of the Bureau of Product Standards (BPS) in Manila for further material testing. Baron said verification is needed to check on an earlier report by the Philippine Iron and Steel Institute (PISI) that saw 10 hardware stores across Mindanao found to be selling construction steel bars which are either undersized , underweight or did not passed the mandatory standards. PPCRV favors raise in campaign spending limits LONG overdue. Thus the reaction of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) to a proposed measure seeking to increase campaign spending limits. PPCRV chairman Rene Sarmiento said it has been a long time since the current limits were set in the law and it had to be reviewed. “The bill is very long overdue. Wise and practical that the amount to be spent by every candidates be increased,” Sarmiento said.
Although he did not suggest any figure, Sarmiento said that a substantial increase is necessary because the current amount is no longer sufficient to cover the cost of a modern campaign. “Many changes had took place since then: prices of basic and less basic commodities and our population has risen astronomically, so is our voting population,” he explained. “Time to review this anachronistic provision and make it realistic and See favors, page 11

AS the nation marks with grief the first anniversary of the Marawi siege by proIslamic State Maute terrorists on Wednesday (May 23), journalist Benjie Liwanag recalled his daring coverage of the bloody fighting that lasted for five months, during which, he found himself in the line of fire a
number of times, but cited prayers and faith in God as his savior during his war reportage. Liwanag, defense reporter of radio station dzBB under TV network GMA, was one of the more than 80 journalists from various parts of the world who covered the war on terror waged by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the
Philippine National Police (PNP) against more than 1,500 Maute terror group members that lay siege on Marawi City in southern Philippines on that fateful day of May 23, 2018. The Marawi siege was preceded by a series of clashes between the military and the Maute terrorists to capture Isnilon Hapilon, the leader of the Islamic terror
group, who was spotted in the Marawi. During the fighting, the Maute terrorists attacked Camp Ranao and occupied several tall buildings, including the city hall and the Mindanao State University in Marawi.
