The process of learning the topics in Educational Psychology has transformed my worldview of my role as a teacher- practitioner, on how I look at my learners about the intricacies and the beauty of learning itself as it relates to the individuals, the many educational philosophies and theories, and the society or context of learning. I never thought that learning these new topics could be that challenging especially when my pre-conceived notions about my learners and about learning runs contrary to the very conceptions that I held true since venturing into the world of teaching. For me, it is true that resistance to new learning takes a lot of effort to get rid of. This realization has brought me closer to a consciousness of constantly questioning and challenging the notions of how to achieve effective learning for my learners, about how my learner’s pre-conceptions could be rewired to accommodate new knowledge and conceptions and more importantly how I manage my own learning as a life-long learner. I was so delighted to learn the divergent ideas whether learning is facilitated by nature (genetic) or nurture (learned) (Mc Leod S. 2017). It turned out to be not an easy task to simplify the problem. Man is the sum of his being as an organism with unique genetic characteristics and distinct learning environment by which dynamic interactions among various societal factors (Political, economic, social, technological etc.) contributes to the identity of the individuals. In a way, the social environment affects the individual likewise, the individual affects the social environment (L.S. Vygotsky, undated). When this is the case, I would like to see the whole society as a living system where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. When learners were given the opportunities to maximize its potentials given its inherent genetic make-up and circumstances, it is the whole society that will benefit. The social systems that are in placed are supposed to serve the benefits of the society, that is, every individual that made up the whole society. But the educational system we have in the Philippines does not provide fully all the essentials for every learner in the country to fully achieve its potentials. I am referring to equity, access, and quality of public basic education. As a teacher, I feel honored to contribute to nation building, of transforming the society where human dignity is respected. Contrary to the things that we are seeing today like the disregard of life and human dignity is simply a reflection of the kind of society where we belong. As a human being, we do not deserve to experience such horror. The question is whether as an educational institution, we have failed to nurture every individual to be a microcosm of an ideal society. This brings me back to the realization that I can do something as an individual teacher to be the force for change at least in my own classroom and school community. I would like to be a pro-active teacher who is nurturing to the needs of my learners. The philosophical perspectives on education (Educational philosophies exm. idealism, realism. pragmatism, existentialism, post modernism and educational theories like perennialism, essentialism, progressivism, critical theory) offered me a wide array of understanding a world view (educational philosophy) or understanding education in schools on what it teaches from the curriculum. But what affects me dearly is the existentialism educational theory. The idea that knowledge that one needs to pursue is the knowledge about the human condition and the personal choices one makes (Orstein and Levin, 2003). Existentialist teaches and values individual freedom and choices. Now I realized that I mostly allowed my students to come up with their own reflections, role play, and group discussions which provided my students some sort of autonomy to take decisions yet accountable of their own learning. But I also realized that not all students responded positively using an existentialist lens in my teaching. As a science teacher, being more of a progressive type do better to my learners who responded well on “learning by doing” (Dewey J. undated). Although, curriculum content was delivered from student interests and questions, an idea that reconciles well with existentialism. Another thing that does not escape my imagination is the reconstructionism educational philosophy. Being educated in a liberal education institution and having been influenced by progressive ideas of taking “actions in the streets”, somewhat motivated me as a teacher in bringing the world into the classrooms thus often I ask my students in Philosophy classes to take social actions that would improve the human conditions in their respective communities (Freire P. undated). Pursuing a research that would highlight student’s inclination towards social action may be one of the research directions I may undertake in the future. However, the social-cognitive theory of learning described how behavior, cognition and the environment are

synergistically affecting or influencing each other which contributed to learning of the individual. Behaviors of individuals are unique since everyone has their own set of life experiences, which also means that everyone learned differently considering his/her own genetics and predispositions. The environment also plays an important role. People learn through observation, imitation, and modelling (Bandura,1986). This is the reason why modelling by the teacher plays an important role in developing student’s conception of reality and construction of self-identity. In the field of neurological science, the human brain is found to be pliable (brain plasticity). That neurons establish more links with other neurons through dendritic connections by making learning more integrative. In my teaching practice, in science lesson or even in other fields of discipline, I tried my best to integrate topics with current events, real life experiences and other fields of interests. Doing it provides more meaningful learning experiences. Also, integrating concepts within and across disciplines demands that the teacher has wide arrays of experiences that he/she can retrieve when the right learning opportunities happen. This has implications on the kind of in-service or pre-service trainings of teachers or would-be teachers. I wonder how Teacher Education Institutions (TEI’s) including the Department of Education is addressing this need considering that the K-12 curriculum demands that teaching-learning should be integrative. Thus, research in this area would be a great opportunity to understand how teachers will be supported for their professional development. Studies in information processing theory found out that information is stored in multiple locations throughout the brain. That the more connections to a single idea or concept, the more likely it is to be remembered (Rumelhart and Mc Clelland, 1986). This has wide implications on the way we teach our learners. Based on the studies, it was suggested to teach students the different methods or strategies to improve memory like the use of mnemonics and relate new information to things one already knew. It was also found how sleep as an essential aspect in enhancing creativity and deep learning since it promotes dendritic growth and neural connections. I wonder to what extent teachers are teaching their students the best way to remember or retain information from the topics they discussed. If we truly care about student learning, we should provide the support by teaching our learners with the strategies that promotes information to be encoded to long term memory. One way of doing it is through elaboration and coding of data for easier retrieval. I accept that I missed this significant information to be mainstreamed in my lessons. There may be times that I taught the use of mnemonics in teaching science but missed the opportunities for my students to practice it by themselves. Allowing them to develop this skill would be helpful since learners will become conscious of their own learning thus develop metacognitive (learning to learn) skills, an important trait for a life-long learner. Finally, a constructivist theory of learning posits that learning occurs because learners are actively involved in the process of making meaning and knowledge construction. Learners benefit when learning is contextualized as well as engaging and meaningful. On the contrary, traditional teaching and learning placed teachers at the pedestal. They were worshipped like gods who transmits knowledge for student’s enlightenment. I still feel the same today after a couple of years teaching in a public school. Perhaps this is just a reflection of the kind of traditional paradigm that persisted in many educational institutions that taught most of our teachers in the Philippines. Or maybe the people in this society have not reached a critical point of totally freeing itself from the traditional educational system that persisted. This is obvious since we have just started the K-12 educational program five years ago. In this program, constructivism played an important role in basic education. It is one of the underlying reasons why we have embarked into the most ambitious educational reform. Ever since the program started, I still feel that a lot of teachers and administrators still cling to the familiar traditions that prevents constructivist teaching to take root. Even though John Dewey in the 60’s, Piaget and Vygotsky in the 70’s and Brunner in the 90’s who considered as the leading theorist of constructivism, advanced their ideas in some countries, their ideas has not advance deeply in the Philippine Education. There may be some teachers who practiced this theory and may be just died out due to lack of support or perhaps the utility of this idea was hampered by the conditions that exist inside the classroom even after the K-12 program was implemented. Research area in constructivism in Philippine context will provide rich information on how we can move forward in our quest for a better educational system.

ROCKINGHAM, North Carolina---Ever wonder how the Philippines’ dismal Internet infrastructure system is connected to their surge of COVID-19 cases? Mindanao Gold Star Daily editor-in-chief Herbie Gomez, a few friends at the City Information Office and media friends back in Cagayan de Oro City keep me updated through Facebook Messenger on the city’s COVID-19 situation. I also read Mindanao Daily News and I’m sad for my family and friends on how they have to deal with the crisis on a daily basis. The surge of COVID-19 cases in Cagayan de Oro City and northern Mindanao is troubling and frustrating on a personal even if fellow Filipino-Americans here and other parts of the US are returning to prepandemic normalcy thanks in large part not only due to increased public compliance to health protocols but to the US government’s intensified vaccination campaign which is reportedly averaging four million vaccinations daily. It was slightly more than a year ago when here at North Carolina and else-

where in the US the Americans had to stay at home and live with the restrictions on movement. We only went out when we needed to buy something or work or seek medical attention. Opposition to these restrictions played out in both social and mainstream media and the resulting fiery exchange carried over to the vaccination campaign with charged verbal tussles between the pros and antis. And it is without a doubt that the government cannot do it alone even if it imposes martial law to stop the pandemic. It needs the people to protect themselves through their faithful, consistent compliance to minimum public health standards. This obvious reminder is sadly ignored and even outrightly defied by some Filipinos who think they can always run to the government whenever they get sick and expect to be served head to foot. ********* Anyway the connection between the Philippines’ lamentable Internet infrastructure and the COVID-19 pandemic lies in how it can service Filipinos without

sacrificing compliance to public health standards. And online transactions and services are the way to go in ensuring zero contact which can only be possible through a good WiFi connection. My relative in Tagoloan town had to go to the Social Security System (SSS) office and the FICCO cooperative office in Cagayan de Oro City in person to settle payments because the SSS website is unreliable and FICCO doesn’t have an online presence. Physical distancing is impossible under these circumstances. And there’s the tendency by people to rush straight into a crowd to finish their transactions or avail of promotional sales gimmicks. So why can’t SSS upgrade their systems so people can do their transactions with them efficiently and conveniently? What exactly is their problem? And the SSS should do something to solve this even if there’s a snowball’s chance in hell that the pandemic ends tomorrow. See STUNTS, page 8

Enter the new BPI chief

A new face, but a familiar one. Last April 22, the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) welcomed Jose Teodoro “TG” Limcaoco as its new president and CEO. The new chief is no stranger to the bank. Prior to his new role in BPI, TG Limcaoco served as Ayala’s chief financial officer, chief risk officer, and chief sustainability officer. He previously served as executive vice president of BPI, became president of BPI Capital in 2007, president of BPI Family Savings Bank in 2010, and board member of BPI in 2019. He was also responsible for BPI’s insurance businesses, Ayala Life and Ayala Plans, and had oversight over BPI Philam and BPI/MS Insurance Corporation. TG succeeds Cezar “Bong” P. Consing, who has retired after successfully steering BPI for the last eight years towards its position today as the second largest bank in the country in terms of market capitalization, a leader in digital banking in terms of users and transactions, and one of only two Philippine companies with a BBB+ credit rating from Standard & Poor’s. Transitioning from response to recovery, TG laid down five key imperatives that will drive the bank to achieve more for the Filipino

The History of Iligan City National High School By IRISH ALIZA CLARIDO QUIDLAT Iligan Medical Center College/MSU-IIT

This paper is all about the history of iligan City National High School from 1996-2016. In conducting the study. The researchers used archival, secondary source materials and government documents supplemented with oral and phone interviews. Photo documentation of the study is taken into consideration in order to supplement the data needed. Key informants and respondents are alumna, students, parents, residents of Barangay Mahayahay, local government official and school officials such as the principal, teachers , and staff. They were consulted to corroborate the existing accounts. The inquiry of this paper is focused on the history of the school, its curriculum, the K-12 preparation and the school contemporary situation towards the future.

The school started in 1945 as junior high school (JHS) it was the first secondary school in Iligan which was later renamed to Lanao Technical School (LTS) and again renamed as Iligan Institute of Technology (IIT) located at Andres Bonifacio Avenue Tibanga Iligan City. In response to a strong public clamor, a new school known as Iligan City High School (ICHS) was established in July 1963 under Resolution No. 78 that propose for the opening of a general secondary curriculum. In 1984 Iligan City High School was transformed into Iligan City National High School. From its founding, (ICNHS) encountered various problems and challenges. One of these would be the increasing number of the student every year due to its cheap tuition fee. Nevertheless, ICNHS continues to develop as a premier public secondary school in Iligan City.

scripted rants of these bashers, not a few of whom are employed and paid for by the discredited political opposition whose top leader thought to purchase a fleet of new vehicles as a solution to containing the COVID-19 pandemic. Taguig City response to COVID 19 As soon as the government started to roll out its vaccination program, I resolved to have all the members of my family and the household to be vaccinated. There have been reports of the varying efficacy rates among the different drugs but I was not choosy. I would take whatever is FDA-approved and available, thinking it would better to have some degree of immunity rather than none at all. I enrolled myself and my dependents under the Ayala Vaccination and Immunization Program but I was open to other options whichever become available first. Eventually, my daughter Trisha and I received our first jabs from the Muntinlupa city health office. My other children, Dondi and Frannie, however, have to wait in line. The problem was my wife Mira who is bedridden. It is physically impossible for her to go to the vaccination center. Fortunately, I heard about the home vaccination program of the Taguig City government. A quick call to Mayor Lino Cayetano, and Dr. Glenda Latorre of the Taguig City Health Office immediately came over to our condo at BGC to give Mira her first Sinovac injection. Smart Phone as Modular Learning Support: A Platform for Learning Mathematics

When it comes to learning Mathematics, it is commonly assumed that highly motivated students are more likely to achieve and perform at higher levels than less motivated students. Furthermore, students’ motivation to learn Mathematics is thought to be related to their levels of Mathematics self-efficacy and anxiety. Students who are more confident in their mathematical abilities and have less anxiety about mathematics are more motivated to learn and thus succeed in mathematics. In other words, regardless of the objective value of an activity or topic, if students do not recognize its value, they may not be motivated to exert effort. However, the more clearly students see how coursework connects to their goals, interests, and concerns, the more they will value it and be motivated to invest time and effort in it ((http:// goo.gl/CSxIXd). Students who are afraid of going to a specific class every day are likely to interpret their apprehension as a lack of skill in that area. In general, improving students’ physical and emotional well-being and decreasing negative emotional states boosts self-efficacy. Because motivation is so complex, there are numerous approaches to investigating an individual’s motivation to learn Mathematics. One of the most common ways to think about motivation is as either extrinsic or intrinsic. When an individual is motivated to complete a task by a factor that is external to the task, this is referred to as extrinsic motivation. Students in school may be motivated to study for tests in order to receive a good grade. Intrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is when an individual’s motivation stems from the task itself. In school, this occurs when students are motivated to study for a test because they gain satisfaction from overcoming academic challenges. Furthermore, self-efficacy

is central to psychologist Albert Bandura’s social cognitive theory. Bandura’s theory emphasizes the importance of observational learning, social experience, and reciprocal determinism in the development of personality. The self-system, according to Bandura, is comprised of a person’s attitudes, abilities, and cognitive skills. This system has a significant impact on how people perceive situations and behave in response to them. Additionally, he defines self-efficacy as “belief in one’s ability to organize and execute the courses of action required to manage prospective situations.” In other words, self-efficacy is a person’s confidence in his or her ability to succeed in a given situation. Also, Bandura describes these beliefs as factors that influence how people think, behave, and feel (1986). Aside from that, he (1997) hypothesizes that emotional and physiological states such as anxiety, stress, fatigue, and mood influence self-efficacy beliefs. As a result, students learn to interpret their physiological arousal as an indicator of personal competence by assessing their own performance under various conditions. Strong emotional reactions to school-related tasks can indicate whether or not the task is likely to succeed. Anxiety can have a negative impact on selfefficacy. Furthermore, factors from the student’s home environment and society influence their attitude toward mathematics. Factors such as parental educational background, occupation, and parental expectations all have a significant impact on students’ attitudes toward mathematics. Students’ attitudes toward mathematics vary as a result of these various factors. More often, the public image of mathematics is labelling it as a difficult, cold, abstract, theoretical and ultrarational subject (Mohamed and Waheed, 2011).

Mathematics is one of the compulsory subjects for all levels of education, primary, secondary, and higher education. This lesson is often regarded by some students as complicated, even scary.
