Fake ‘frontliner’ robs hospital in Bukidnon

AMP ALAGAR, Cagayan de Oro City: A fake “frontliner” was arrested on suspicion of robbing a hospital in Bukidnon with a cash amount of P 59,250.

In a report to the police regional office here Saturday, the suspect was identified as Janroy Labita y Lagdao, 29, single, of Purok 3B, Can-ayan, Malaybalay City.

Malaybalay Chief of Police L/Col. Jerry A. Tambis, said that the police investigators recovered P 55,000 of various denomination from the suspect.

The amount is already short of P4,250 cash, Tambis said.

Tambis said that the CCTV footage showed the

suspect wearing the frontliner’s “personal protective equipment” (PPE) when he destroyed and emptied the hospital’s vault about 8:44 in the evening on May 18, 2021.

On May 19, 2021, the hospital cashier Jovelyn Gamao y Realda, 52, reported to the police that the vault located in the hospital’s medical director was destroyed with the cash amount of P 59,250 missing.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Officials here announced Monday that the city is back to the general community quarantine (GCQ) status in fighting the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic starting 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, 25 May, until 30 June 2021.

Under the new classification, malls and department stores will be closed except for groceries and supermarkets and other essential stores while cockfighting, nightclubs, pubs and other similar entertainment establishments will not be allowed to operate, lawyer Arnel Zapatos, city administrator, said.

Eateries and restaurants are only to serve take-out or to-go orders and no dineins, he said.

An existing liquor ban will also be in effect until June 30, he added.

GenSan hospitals 100% full; surge in COVID cases traced to family gatherings

ENERAL SANTOS CITY – Residents here may just have to forgo celebrating family milestones as part of an effort to fight the spread of the dreadful coronavirus (COVID-19).

Authorities today reported that all seven major hospitals in the city are already 100 percent full, 83.33 percent of which are COVID-19 cases. Of this number, 69 percent are from this city while the rest are from nearby towns in South Cotabato and Sarangani.

A COVID-19 monitoring report says that 89.5 percent of the 23 ICU beds are now in use while the only 14 mechanical ventilators in the city, 42 percent are being used.

Officials have already considered tighter health and safety measures, including the revocation of permits earlier issued for mass gatherings after daily new cases of infection doubled since four days ago.

On Wednesday last week, the local health monitoring unit listed new cases of COVID-19 at 65, another 69 new cases on Thursday, another 68 on Friday and 63 on Saturday. Total active cases now stand at 533.

Previous to May 19, the numbers were hovering at only over 20 daily new cases.

Apparently alarmed by the new development, a group of physicians here urged local health authorities to come up with more strict measures to avert the

seemingly fast spread of the coronavirus in the city.

Dr. Fidel Peñamante, president of the Gensan Medical Society, said the local Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious diseases (IATF) needs to further strengthen its anti-COVID-19 measures by first looking into how the coronavirus appears to be spreading fast.

In a meeting Friday by the IATF attended by different sectors, the sudden surge in daily cases were “contact traced” to family gatherings over the past weeks, including Mother’s Day celebration, birthdays, weddings and baptism events which normally gather relatives from other places to celebrate their milestones.

It was noted that 70 percent of the new cases

COVID-19 in the city were close contacts of earlier confirmed cases. A report by the City Health Office said 48 of the 68 new cases on May 21 were close contacts of an infected patient, possibly a kin or friend.

Earlier on, no less than Mayor Ronnel Rivera bared that he received reports from health units about transmission among families and households, infecting even children.

Among the children infected is a nine-month old. Notably, 54 percent or 288 of the new cases, as of May 22, are asymptomatic, the report said.

Records of the Department of Health bare that General Santos hospitals have 308 available beds for confirmed and probable patients, 225 in isolation facilities, 60 in wards.

Nurse, 2 others fall in P440,000 buy bust

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: Three suspects, including a nurse, were collared Monday in separate drug buy busts here that netted a total of 65 grams of illegal drugs worth P440,000.

Agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) nabbed a certain “Bro,” the 22-year-old nurs-

ing fresh graduate, during a buy bust in his rented pad in Lapasan, this city.

Lawyer Nolan Gadia, the NBI team leader, said that about 60 grams of Shabu (Methamphetamine Hydrochloride) valued at P 406,000 were recovered in the suspect’s rented pad.

“We are not disclosing

the true name of “Bro” at the moment because the NBI is pursuing the alleged source of the Shabu,” Gadia said.

He said that the suspect was reportedly the supplier of local client-users, most of them call center agents and medical workers.

In a separate entrapment, the local police arrested two construction workers

and seized about 5 grams of Shabu worth P 34,000.

Police identified the suspects as Ariel Gilbolingo and Paul Christian Tesara, both also residentd of Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City.

Law enforcers said that charges with violation of the comprehensive antiillegal drug act were readied against the suspects.

Celebrate questions even when we do not have answers

We balance our moral ferocity with humility and tenderness.

First, we need the humility of consistent self-examination.

This requires us to do something very countercultural: Celebrate questions even when we do not have answers. Our culture rewards certainty, confidence, and definitive answers.

By celebrating questions, we increase the likelihood of identifying the potential harm we might do in the name of our values.

Every idea, no matter how well-intentioned, casts a shadow and holds the potential for some harm. When we examine our assumptions and ask difficult questions about our beliefs and behaviors, when we practice humility, we can avoid the traps of demonizing others, which so many of us seem to fall into. When we balance ferocity with humility, we also may discover new,

unforeseen responses to big issues. We need to cultivate something even more radical: tenderness. Tenderness allows us to open our hearts to our own pain and joy, as well as others’. It is so easy to close down in the face of suffering..

I learned about the balance of ferocity, humility, and tenderness from Elie Wiesel.

Holocaust survivor, author, activist, and Nobel Prize winner, Elie Wiesel was also a master teacher. He believed that education, when designed with a focus on morality and humanism, could change the course of human historyAt the center of his approach was what he called Memory.

He defined Memory as “the moral ingredient in education, which humanizes and sensitizes us to one another.”

His pedagogy was explicit and intentional in its focus on the goal of instilling Memory in his students.

“My goal as a teacher”, “is to humanize, to sensitize.” He told his students, “Whatever you learn, remember: the learning must make you more, not less, human.” “I always teach with an open heart. Not just for moral reasons, but for pragmatic ones—a teacher’s open heart makes it possible for students to open their hearts as well.”

We need to read history through a moral lens, to draw out enduring lessons that can clarify our own choices in this moment. As Professor Wiesel often said, “It is not enough to know the facts. We must take things—history, current events—personally.” When we do so, he taught, we explore and embrace new ways of thinking, learn new habits of questioning, and, ultimately, find a deeper sense of common humanity.

Generally, Administrative Officers are responsible for day-to-day task management within an organization. Administrative officers perform some or all of the following duties: A. Oversee and co-ordinate office administrative procedures and review, evaluate and implement new procedures B. Administer policies and procedures related to the release of records in processing requests under government access to information and privacy legislation D. Co-ordinate and plan for office services, such as accommodation, relocations, equipment, supplies, forms, disposal of assets, parking, maintenance and security services E. Ms. Sara Mae Cassion-Dahuyla, discussed the Business Continuity Planning and Management.

She emphasized

the objective and importance of Business Continuity Plan.

She said during her discussion that “to help businesses mitigate disruption and unlock workforce productivity, Business Continuity Plan must be adopted and applied. She also said that,” it is important to remember that you should plan and prepare not only for events that will stop functions completely but for those that also

have the potential to adversely impact services or functions”.

After thorough discussion, participants were given time to fill up the intended forms in preparation for their individual/respective firms as their own Business Continuity Plan.

THE uncontrollable surge of positive cases is simply a non-compliance thing for Cagay-anons not following the minimum public standards set forth by the local IATF. That being said, the City Hall’s call for self-discipline is basically ignored en masse.

The presence of virus is massively ignored because of the feeling that we are always in the pink of health, and more so, we see ourselves as something like immortals — enduring, perpetual human beings.

Having said that, the more we flirt with Covid-19, the higher the likelihood that we will catch the virus.

The wearing of masks and face shields therefore has unmasked some kind of a human instinct in us — that of our strong resolve to survive this pandemic, yet we are complacent enough that we simply ignore IATF protocols.

And almost half-way through the year now, we continue defying the protocols thus the lethal blow of the virus albeit the bizarre road to another chapter beyond is not farfetched.

Vaccine it is!

FROM mere numbers and statistics last year, covid now has names and faces on it. The last few weeks took covid closer to home as our own relatives and friends got infected. Most of them were blessed to have recovered but sadly 3 of them did not make it.

If only they were vaccinated, they probably had a better chance of beating the unseen enemy. They missed the vaccines for three different reasons: The first one got the virus just a few weeks after the vaccine was rolled out for the senior citizens. Our friend was already scheduled and looking forward to getting the jab but the virus got to him first. If only he

was scheduled much earlier, things might have been different. The second one was a friend who has comorbidity.

She was already in the vaccine site when she hesitated and backed out at the last minute. Had she taken it, she would have finished her 2nd dose already. Covid already got her by the time she felt ready. The third was a relative who also had the chance to be vaccinated under the A2 category but refused because he was waiting for his preferred brand that they ordered thru the company of her daughter.

DOH XI calls on persons with comorbidities to register DAVAO CITY – Persons with comorbidities are urged to visit their barangay and register as they are the next priority group scheduled to get inoculated.

In the virtual presser hosted by the Department of Health XI earlier today, DOH XI regional director Dr. Annabelle Yumang has called on those individuals with comorbidities to get themselves counted by visiting their barangay center.

“Just like the previous priority groups, we are also coming up with a masterlist of the A3 group so we would know how many vaccines are needed for this group,” Dr. Yumang said.

Qualified under the A3 Priority Group is any adult between 18-59 years old

with any controlled comorbidity.

Identified comorbidities are among the top causes of COVID19 and national morbidity and mortality which include chronic respiratory disease, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, cerebrovascular disease, malignancy, diabetes, obesity, chronic liver disease, neurologic disease, immunodeficiency state.

Original tribal stories digitized in Tagum’s new cultural project

AGUM CITY -- The original indigenous stories of this city’s cultural communities found new platforms for massive distribution in a bold attempt to immortalize these stories by adopting digital tools that are attuned to the times.

The Tagum City Historical and Cultural Center launched on Friday, May 21, 2021 its new project, the Digital Oman-Oman Series Project which aims to digitize the various tribal stories -- or Oman-Oman in the languages of the Tipanud -- of the indigenous cultural communities of Tagum.

A by-product of the Community-Based PagIndo Program, the project

compiles hundreds of indigenous stories into various formats -- a podcast hosted on popular streaming app Spotify, a fully-illustrated children’s storybook and a coloring book.

Mayor Allan Rellon, who served as the inaugural storyteller of the project, lauded the Center for its initiative to ensure that the stories of the Tipanud of Tagum will be told to future generations.

He added that the adoption of technology to tell these stories creatively and efficiently will not only benefit Tagumenyo students, but also kids anywhere in the world.

Marawi’s Grand Mosque to be completed by October 2021

THE chief of the Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) said he expects the rehabilitation of the iconic Grand Mosque inside the city’s most affected area to be completed by October of this year.

Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario bared in a media interview during a Reporting Event in Marawi that the repair of the largest mosque in the city is now 69% completed.

“This is a manifestation of the total commitment of the national government, local government, and the local leaders in Marawi City to ensure that the masjeds, about 30 of them were destroyed during the siege, is being given focus by the national government as a very vital component of the Marawi rehabilitation,” he said.

Del Rosario, who also heads the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) previously stated that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte instructed the restoration of the religious sites as he sees this crucial to the social healing element of the rehabilitation.

DAVAO CITY – The City Government of Davao will ban the face-to-face activities of government agencies here effective 12:01 a.m.

Wednesday until the state of calamity in the country is lifted, following an increase in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infections in the city, Mayor Sara Duterte said Monday.

During her program aired over Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR 87.5), Duterte said that local

health authorities decided to impose new restrictions on gatherings after tracing new cases to government events.

Prohibited events include inauguration, anniversary, thanksgiving, ribbon-cutting, blessing, turnover, launching program, oath-taking, photo opportunity, retirement honors, welcome honors, testimonial program, summer outing, team building, salo-salo (get-together

party), birthdays and all other similar activities.

“Based on our contacttracing data, government events have become sources of infection. This is not only happening during the recent surge but also even before the surge. Both the national and local government offices are guilty,” she said.

The order will cover the barangay and local governments, and national agencies and instrumentalities, including government-owned and controlled corporations,

according to Duterte.

She said that government instrumentalities should shift to virtual events, since these do not require the physical gathering of people, to cut the transmission of COVID-19 infections.

“There is no problem with online platforms.

Virtual events will have no problem because there is no risk of COVID-19 transmission,” she said.

She said that face-toface government trainings or seminars are suspended until August 31, 2021.

What is leadership and being a leader then? If we are to browse the internet today, automatically it will give us different meanings of the words leadership and leader. Among them is that leadership is said to be an act of leading people in an organization towards achieving its goal. Leaders do this

by influencing employee behavior in several ways. A leader sets a clear vision for the organization, motivates and guides the employees through the work process, and builds morale.As to the measurement of success, these two wordsindeed played a vitalcontribution to an organization’s success. But what caught my attention was when someone mentioned that a good leader is someone who can produce many good leaders. Truly, leaders don’t create followers… they create more leaders. Zubiri to IATF: Stricter COVID measures needed in Northern Mindanao SENATE Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri has expressed concern over the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Northern Mindanao, and is calling on the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for their help in controlling the situation.

“As a resident of Northern Mindanao, I am very alarmed by the recent surge of COVID-19 cases across the region,” said Zubiri.

“Two weeks ago, our regional IATF already reported a 300 percent rise in cases in Lanao del Norte. And this weekend, CDO reported that their numbers have risen to 962, from just 100-plus in March. In Bukidnon, our medical frontliners are struggling to deal with the sudden surge of COVID-19 patients.

“Our hospitals are already filling up. I know that Bukidnon Provincial Medical Hospital (BPMH) is full, along with some of our private hospitals.

Medical Center has already raised its status to Code Red, with 50 percent of their operating capacity taken up by COVID cases.

My relatives in Manila who were vaccinated much earlier were sharing how organized the vaccine process was in their Barangays.

I have to say that the one in SM Lanang, where we got our vaccines, was well organized as well. Social distancing was observed, the staff and front-liners were all courteous and helpful, guiding us every step of the way. It took us only a total of 45 minutes to finish the entire process, to already include the 15 mins observation period.

I wish to thank and commend all the men and women manning the different vaccine sites across the country. They spend at least 10 hours/day administering, comforting those who were nervous, keeping the smiles on their faces while explaining to those who are confused, and cheering each time one leaves the observation area sans

The virus is still very much around but we have the vaccines. If we have family members and friends who belong to A1, A2, and A3 priority groups, let’s strongly encourage them to get vaccinated. Let’s link them to experts in case they have doubts or questions.

Let’s be mindful that it is our responsibility to get ourselves vaccinated for our own protection and those of our loved ones. And we help recover our economy.

On Sunday, the local IATF reported that all seven major hospitals in the city were already 100 percent full, 83.33 percent of which are COVID-19 positive cases. Of this number, 69 percent are from this city while the rest are from nearby towns in South Cotabato and Sarangani.

The report also said that 89.5 percent of the 23 ICU (intensive care unit) beds are now in use. Of the 14 mechanical ventilators in the city, only one remains and is being reserved for severely critical patients.

DOST-10 launches SafeFood Byte App, heightens food safety in NorMin T HE Department of Science and Technology-10 launched the SafeFood Byte mobile application on May 17, 2021, at the New Dawn Hotel Plus, Cagayan de Oro City.

The SafeFood Byte is a reporting system to monitor and promote food safety from the farm to the consumers. It installs a mechanism for rapid resolution of issues and concerns that will also catalyze a food safety culture in Northern Mindanao. The

app was made possible with the authorities and functions of the Food Safety Regulation Coordinating Board in Region 10 (FSRCB-X).

The app gives the consumers an easy way to report inconsistencies and external hazards on the food they consume. Through the mobile application, consumers can take a photo of the alleged unsafe food and report it online. The agency will filter the submitted reports and classify them according

to severity.

Food regulatory agencies and DOST-10 will then notify the reported food establishment. Further, consumers can get updates on the progress of their reports through the app.

The board anticipates the app as an avenue to spot clear and serious violations against the Food Safety Act, such as Food Fraud cases that have continuously increased during the pandemic.

The FSRCB-X also wants

to promote a unified approach to advancing food safety in NorMin. Hence, reported food establishments

will be included in DOST10’s food safety awareness webinars to enhance product safety and quality.

Overall, the SafeFood Byte Mobile application helps the FSRCB-X monitor food handlers and promotes food safety awareness to both consumers and manufacturers.
