Incumbents running for posts must be on ‘leave’
WHILE it is time to settle down after the midterm election in May this year, the furor over alleged “mass vote buying” continues. Apart from the allegation of vote buying, the issue of a “fraud” election results became the talk of the town in almost all quarters in the country. On the other hand, the winners were quick to dispel the doubts about a fraudulent election with their supporters heralding a hard-earned victory. There was nothing uncommon ‘though, because the winners always contend that the victory was the will of the people.

THINK a minute. Jesse Owens was a worldclass athlete in track and field in the 1930’s. He was told that because he was a black, African American, there was no way he could win against the white Nazi German athletes at the world Olympics in 1936. That year the Olympics were held in Berlin, Germany. Adolf Hitler, the Nazi dictator, refused to even look at the African American athletes. The white German athletes were praised and cheered on the field, while Jesse Owens and FULL STORY ON PAGE 4
MANILA -- Displaced residents of Marawi City in certain areas of ground zero may start returning to their homes in July for repair works, as the debris clearing operations have been moving smoothly despite previous legal constraints, the Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) said on Monday. Task force chairperson, Secretary Eduardo del Rosario, who also heads the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council, discussed updates on
the government’s rehabilitation efforts in war-torn Marawi City ahead of its second anniversary, during the third episode of “The Virtual Presser”. Del Rosario said the return of residents will be conducted in phases, allowing two of the nine sectors in the most affected area every month, given that they have secured their repair permits from the city government. “We can say that the debris management is going on smoothly
Comelec defers proclamation of senators, party-list groups By FERDINAND PATINIO
MANILA -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Tuesday deferred the proclamation of the elected 12 senators and party-list groups. This, as the transmission results from Washington, D.C. in the United States has yet to arrive in the country. “Very sorry to disappoint everyone but it looks like today (Tuesday) is not the day (of proclamation). We are currently canvassing the returns from KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) and we have to await the returns from Washington, D.C. because they represent more than 200,000 registered voters so in order to make sure that there will be no movement in the ranking of our elected officials, we need to get that. So not today,” said Comelec
spokesperson James Jimenez in a press briefing. “We will announce when. Then like what I said, not today. That’s it,” the poll body official added. There is a total of 228,472 registered Filipino voters in the US capital. Jimenez explained that they are having a hard time communicating with the post in Washington because of the time difference. “We expect that today but rather late, that’s the problem. Right now, it’s around midnight in Washington DC and we’ve been trying to reach them but we are experiencing difficulties,” he said. Manila’s time zone is ahead by 12 hours than Washington. With this, the Comelec official noted that the seven-man See COMELEC, page 11

and we are on target. In fact, starting July of the year -- July 30 -- we will start allowing the residents to go back in Sector 1. (Sectors) 2 and 3 will be in August, and the last will be (in) November, wherein Sectors 8 and 9 will be allowed to come in to repair their destroyed building,” he said. This is after the clearing of unexploded explosives and ordinances was stopped in November until February due to legal problems.
DAVAO City--An environment group urged the newly elected city councilors to find means of addressing the garbage problem other than adopting the waste-to-energy (WTE) project. Mary Ann Fuentes, managing trustee of Interface Development Interventions (IDIS) said in an interview Monday the WTE technology is not the “long-term and most effective solution.” Fuentes said the city council should thoroughly study the proposed project, which, although deemed as the easiest way to address the problem on solid waste is unsustainable in the long term. She said environmentalists recognized the city’s waste disposal problem and that the seven-hectare sanitary landfill in New Carmen, Tugbok, has nearly reached its limit. But she added that “for us, a solution to environmental issues should not necessarily have to be the easiest in terms of implementation. That’s not usually the long-term and most effective solution.” She expressed fears that pushing through with the WTE scheme might result in more

“During the Industrial Revolution, the worry was about the dehumanizing effects of work, today, perhaps the greater fear is a world where the elimination of work itself is the source of dehumanization as a result of income insecurity and declining social agency” (Graham B. Martin, 2017).
