Heart attack,’ not COVID jab, cause of senior citizen’s death By CRIS DIAZ Executive Editor

CAGAYAN DE PRO CITY: “Heart attack” was the caused of death of the 73year-old senior citizen who died a few minutes after an anti- COVID 19 jab here five days ago, the City Health Official said. Dr. Lorraine Nery, the City health Official, said that the death of Zoilo Joa-

quin Borcillo, of Barangay Agusan, Cagayan De Oro City, was not related to the anti-COVID-19 vaccine. Borcillo got an Astra Zeneca, an anti-COVI-19 jab, Wednesday, one of the schedule days for senior citizens for the week in a downtown mall here. A few minutes after getting the jab, Borcillo complained of difficulty of

breathing. Borcillo was rushed to the city hospital where he expired. City Mayor Oscar Moreno ordered a probe of Borcillo’s death while appealing to the senior citizens to provide all information about their health prior to getting an anti-COVID-19 vaccine.

DOT-10 eyes strong coordination with LGUs vs COVID-19 CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- To address concerns on overcrowded tourism spots in light of the surge of coronavirus (COVID)-19 cases in the region, the Department of Tourism (DOT)-10 has vowed to strengthen its coordination with the local government units (LGUs) to ensure strict adherence to the health protocols and guidelines for tourism areas. “This is a very basic issue.

The rules are very clear. We just need to work on our partnership with the LGU and other implementing arm to really ensure that the health protocols are applied [and followed] in our tourist destinations and attractions,” DOT-10 Supervising Tourism Operations Officer Decius Esmedalla said during the Northern Mindanao Task Force for COVID-19’s weekly press

conference. According to Esmedalla, they are now monitoring key tourist spots in the region with the LGUs to make certain that such tourist establishments are following the Memorandum Circular 2021-001, which mandates the establishments to have limited capacity to ensure physical distancing and the observance of basic health protocols such as the wear-

ing of masks, temperature checks, and hand sanitizing areas. As regards the move to temporarily close the “balsas” (floating cottages) and beaches in Misamis Oriental by the governor, DOT-10 says that it fully respects Governor Yevgeney Vincente B. Emano’s decision believing that LGUs are more conversant with See EYES, page 13

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-10 Regional Director Mylah Faye Aurora Cariño said she respects the decision of Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Vicente “Bambi” Emano and Opol Municipal Mayor Maximino Seno to temporarily close Balsa operations and beach resorts in the face of surging COVID-19 cases in the province. “We respect the order of Governor Emano and Mayor Seno for temporarily closing tourist sites and beaches in Opol believing they considered several parameters before arriving at such decision,” said Cariño. The lady director added that there was a surge of COVID-19 cases in the region based on the recent report released by the Department of Health (DOH)-10 on COVID-19 cases.

Mindanao Daily’s survival instinct

AMID the surging pandemic, Mindanao Daily News celebrates today its 10th year of serving the reading public with an eye on engaging the Truth, Justice and Progress. With the sharp decline in sales, MDN has survived the test of time after a year of lockdowns, quarantines and strict health protocols. Survival measures include the reduction of print days downsized into few pages, followed by staff furloughs and limited the number of issues to stay afloat in an industry so severely affected by Covid-19 pandemic. Unlike a struggling daily in town that folded unceremoniously, MDN’s survival instinct has remained intact, strong and solid as ever to withstand the health crisis never imagined to hit hard on the economy so badly on a global scale. This is the story of a regional newspaper that knows no fear, nor daunt under the weight of the coronavirus. In fact, MDN has to do its mission courageously without fear or favor — in

all of its stories including the devastating sweep of Covid-19 pandemic, it being the biggest story in this generation. The financial impact on businesses including the newspaper industry was not a walk in the park. And for most community newspapers, MDN included, the struggle to survive is unprecedented, devastating, ravaging. Notably, there was a record in the drop of advertisements that triggered the economic slowdown in the print industry. The decrease in advertising was swift, as businesses had tightened their spending and operational cost, hence the result was a pain in the neck for publishers and owners of the print industry. That being said, an extinction-level had hit hard for community newspapers as the coronavirus continue on unleasing its fury on a global scale. Just like any other businesses, the print industry is in a precarious position, with more smaller news outlets in the country are into the verge of closing

Ruffy Magbanua

down permanently. Already about 1,800 newspapers had closed down permanently worldwide following the number of people buying print editions had dropped significantly. As the journalism industry attempts to adapt to the new normal, people now get their news online, social media being the easiest and most convenient source of information these days of pandemic lockdowns. With no solution in sight, newspapers might not survive the contagion of coronavirus. The fight for survival is real for community newspapers like MDN to stay afloat amid the pandemic. Yet for 10 solid years, MDN has proved its worth as Mindanao’s only regional newspaper. Write on MDN! Congratulations! (ruffy44_ph2000@yahoo. com)

AS I ponder the back and forth and up and down in my surroundings and the whole world, a book from my library falls into my hand: Peter Cochrane’s Uncommon Sense with the subtitle Out of the box thinking for an in the box world. “Peter Cochrane is one of our most far-sighted visionaries, and brings brilliant clarity and focus to our understanding of ourselves and our technologies, and of how profoundly each is transforming the other.” describes Douglas Adams, author of The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Peter explains how very simple analysis allows the prediction of such debacles as the 3G auction and the subsequent collapse of an industry, whilst simple-minded thinking is dangerous in the context of a world that is predominantly chaotic and out of control. People balked when Peter suggested a wholesale move to eWorking, the rise of email and text messaging, and the dotcom regime mirroring the boom and bust cycle of the industrial revolution. His predictions

of the use and growth of mobile devices and communication, or use of chip implants for humans to replace ID cards, passports, and medical records, or iris scanners and fingerprint readers - were all seen as unlikely. Hints and Traces

What should be normal in us?

THE quick and short answer to that question is for us to be like Christ, to be “another Christ” (alter Christus), and even “Christ himself ” (ipse Christus). This is what should be normal in us. It is not presumptuous of us not only to aim at it but also to assume such awareness now, even if it will always be an ongoing and tenuous affair all throughout our lifetime. God, our Father and Creator, wants it that way, since he wants us to be his image and likeness, children of his, meant to share in his very own divine life not only

in heaven but also while we are still here on earth, struggling in our way to reach our definitive eternal status in heaven. It is not overbold of us to think that way. It, for sure, is not making ourselves fall into some psychological anomaly. It is what is meant for us. It is what is proper to us. In fact, to be like Christ would constitute the fullness and perfection of our humanity when everything that is good and proper to us is achieved. It’s when we can faithfully channel in our lives the very essence of God which

Roy Cimagala

is love and all goodness as personified by Christ himself. It’s when we can echo St. Paul’s words: “It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me.” (Gal 2,20) We have to start to feel at home with this ideal of normality that is meant for us. We have to overcome whatever awkwardness or, worse, unbelief and See NORMAL, page 15

Vax rollout driving optimism for biz recovery: Cebu developer By CARLO LORENCIANA

CEBU CITY – Property developer Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI) has expressed that the rollout of the vaccines is driving optimism that business activity would step up moving forward, paving the way for the country’s full economic recovery. This was expressed by CLI chief operating officer Franco Soberano on

Monday as he reported the company’s positive firstquarter earnings, driven by the improving business environment and sustained demand for housing amid the pandemic. “While there is still considerable work to be done to finally lay this pandemic to rest, we see light at the end of the tunnel and are preparing for improved economic

activity. In fact, CLI has set for itself a growth target of 15 to 20 percent this year,” Soberano said in a virtual press briefing. Soberano said once lockdown measures were eased towards the end of 2020, CLI quickly responded by stepping up activity to 95 percent in most of its construction sites. He said mobility issues

are no longer pronounced in the Visayas and Mindanao (VisMin) regions where coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections have remained relatively manageable. Cebu City, the largest metropolis in southern Philippines, for instance, was experiencing low infection rates in the past weeks, See RECOVERY, page 11

BDO Leasing earns P9.5 million in 1Q21 BDO Leasing and Finance, Inc. (BDOLF) posted a net income of P9.5 million in the first three (3) months of 2021, generated solely from investment income following the discontinuance of the Company’s former financing operations and the sale of all its leasing and loan portfolio to the BDO Unibank Group in October 2020. BDOLF’s investments registered a fair value gain of P13.6 million, while total expenses stood at P4.5 million. The company’s 1Q21 performance is not comparable to the P83.3 million profit recorded a yearago, given that last year’s results reflected business operations prior to the full implementation of the Group’s restructuring of its leasing business. The restructuring entailed the

full transition of BDOLF operations to BDO Finance Corporation (BDO Finance), established in 2019 to offer customers continued access to lease products and services. BDO Finance likewise assumed the lease transactions booked in BDOLF to ensure continuity to the latter’s existing clients.

It should be noted that BDOLF already ceased to operate as a leasing company and has not accepted any new leasing transaction since October 2020. Despite the change in direction for the company, BDOLF’s book value per common share for the 1Q21 rose by 5.7 per cent to P2.76 from P2.61 a year-ago.

PUV operators urged to look after passengers’ welfare CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) operators are urged to look after the overall welfare of passengers amid the surge of COVID-19 in the region. National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-10 Regional Director Mylah Faye Aurora B. Cariño, chairperson of the economy cluster of the Northern Mindanao Task Force for COVID-19, emphasized the role of PUV operators in containing COVID-19 pandemic saying, “Our only call to the PUV operators not to wait that they will be watched over. They themselves should police their own ranks because the COVID issue is serious and we hope they won’t exacerbate the situation. They must make sure to follow the seven commandments for public transport.” The seven commandments for PUVs in this time of pandemic are 1) wear masks and face shields, 2) no talking and making phone calls, 3) no eating, 4) keep public utility vehicles well-ventilated, 5) conduct frequent disinfection, 6) no

from page 4 bible -and here especially Proverbs help me a lot. As I mentioned in one of my previous write ups, Proverbs is probably the most downto-earth book in the bible. Its education prepares you for the street and the market place - somehow out of the box thinking for an in the box world, too. Proverbs offers the warm advice you get by growing up in a good family and for successfully making your way in the world. It covers small questions as well as large: talking too much, visiting friends and neighbors too often or being unbearably cheerful too early in the morning. Proverbs simply tells how life works most of the time. People, and count me in, love to quote Proverbs, which often express truth about life in an elegant, witty kernel. You’ll find more humor in Proverbs than anywhere else in the bible. And humor often seems to have passed in these days and age. +++ Email: doringklaus@gmail. com or follow me on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter or visit my www.germanexpatinthephilippines.blogspot.com or www. klausdoringsclassicalmusic. blogspot.com.

Normal...

from page 4 resistance we may have about it. For us to reach the fullness of our humanity, we just cannot depend on our human powers, no matter how impressive they may be in human terms. We just cannot depend on our intelligence, our ideologies, our political consensus, our sciences. While we have to use to the hilt all our human powers, we have to see to it that they are animated by the very spirit of Christ who makes himself “the way, the truth and the life” for us. (cfr. Jn 14,6) Let’s not allow them to work simply on their own, based and motivated only by what we see and feel, by what we understand through our intelligence that is not yet guided by our Christian faith. We need to exert effort to refer them to Christ and to be guided by him always. This may require that we be always recollected in our activities. We should avoid just acting on instincts, on what we consider to be what comes naturally, what is commonsensical. Not even should we act according only to some social and cultural norms. All these, of course, have their valid and objective values, but they need to be animated properly by the spirit of Christ, otherwise they can only go nowhere despite the excitement they can give us. We have to make some drastic changes in our understanding of what should be normal in us. At the moment, what we readily see is a normality based only on some human consensus. The standards and criteria used are simply mundane and temporal that can never cope with everything that our life can pose. What should be normal in us is to be like Christ, to have his mind and heart, his desire and mission. After all, he is the pattern of our humanity. Email: roycimagala@gmail. com

Virtual learning beyond Covid By IRENE P. GARCIA, Teacher III East City Central School Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City

COVID-19 has shone a light on the education system worldwide. Many teachers have had to really evaluate their teaching methods and determine whether they have truly been meeting the needs of all of their students. Virtual learning has become a way of life as Covid-19 has forced many students to learn from home as well as many teachers to teach from home. As virtual learning is continuously being evaluated, there is a need to look back to life before the 2020 pandemic to see if there has always been a need for virtual learning and compare it to the reality of today. Virtual learning did not

just evolve with Covid-19. The question is: was there a need for virtual learning prior to the pandemic? As a teacher, my answer is yes. There were many occasions when I had a student who was in the hospital or out sick for an extended period of time and who of course still needed to learn. To be able to still have that student connected to their classmates and the live teaching in the classroom would have been awesome. I believe that even students that were suspended should have had at the very least, access to the recording of the live lesson that was taught that day so that they would not fall behind in their learning.

Riskbased maintenance prioritizes equipment that carries the highest risk should it fail, for better management

efficiency in the power plant. The LTSA takes effect from April 2021 until April 2024, and inspections will be carried out by MHI Power (Philippines) Plant Services Corporation, an affiliate company of Mitsubishi Power. This project is the latest of more than 90 risk-based maintenance projects amounting to 3.6 GW in capacity that the company has worked on since 2008. Abe Nisnisan, Facility Head of TSI, welcomed the partnership, “Therma South is a critical supplier of baseload power to the Mindanao region, and as such it is important that our operations run reliably and sustainably. We constantly look at ways

to make improvements to deliver strong maintenance results across a range of solutions. We look forward to our partnership with Mitsubishi Power to ensure the continued improvement of reliability and efficiency of our equipment.” Mr. Vincent V. Engracia, President, MHI Power (Philippines) Plant Services Corporation, spoke of the company’s commitment to the region, “Reliable and efficient power is the foundation of stable economic and societal growth. Mindanao had faced frequent power shortages before the completion of Therma South and so being able to help play a role in supporting this

The Davao Therma South Power Station, located in Davao del Sur Province, is owned by Therma South Inc. (TSI), an AboitizPower subsidiary, and consists of a 300-MW baseload coal-fired power plant made up of two 150-MW units.
