Job opportunities abound as NorMin charts path to recovery

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Department of Labor and Employment Region Northern Mindanao (DOLE-10) opened some 3,600 job opportunities in Northern Mindanao as part of its economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

In an interview on Sat-

urday at the podcast of the Cabinet Officer for Regional Development and Security for Northern Mindanao (CORDS X), DOLE-10 Director Albert Gutib said 122 local employers participated in a job and business fair on April 28, a manifestation that the region is gradually recovering from the pandemic.

Sixty-one applicants were hired on the spot while 581 were near-hires. “ The near-hires are qualified but they need to submit additional requirements or do final interview,” Gutib said.

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The participants of the 3-kilometer fitness and cleanup drive dubbed “BasuRun 2022” have collected some five cubic meters or 5,000 kilos of garbage.

Organized by the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) in collaboration with the Zamboanga Trail Runners, some 600 runners joined the event on Saturday.

Gerry Pollisco of the OCENR said the participants came from three points — east, west, and central areas with the east coast group collecting the most volume of garbage with two cubic meters.

“The first 100 runners received medals and all participants were given certificates of participation,” Pollisco said.

He added t hat t he participants came from a cross-section of the community.

The activity was in line with the observance of the National Month of the Ocean, which highlights the importance of conservation, protection, and sustainable management of the country’s coastal and marine resources.

The Philippines’ Month of the Ocean is celebrated annually in May under Presidential Proclamation No. 57 signed by then-President Joseph Estrada in 1998. (PNA)

Moreover, DOLE-10 Regional Director Albert E. Gutib conveyed the message of Labor Secretary Silvestre “Bebot” Bello III where he emphasized the significant contribution of conducting job fair in employment generation, especially that most displaced workers are still in dire need to getting jobs to sustain the needs of their respective families.

Gutib wished that all jobseekers would finally land the dream jobs that they are looking for.

Fifty employers participated with 1,334 job vacancies available and interviewed 475 registered applicants from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

The Jobs Fair is an employment facilitation strategy aimed to fast-track the meeting of jobseekers and employers/overseas recruitment agencies in one venue at a specific date to reduce cost, time and effort particularly on the part of the See HIRED, page 10

TFBM gears up for 2022 Marawi peace week celebration MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur -- As the rehabilitation efforts continue to gain momentum, a series of free events and activities to promote peace and unity is scheduled to begin here Tuesday, May 17, and continue until May 23 for this year’s Marawi Week of Peace.

This, as the Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM), its member line agencies, local government units,

and development partners commemorate the heroism and unity displayed during the 2017 Marawi siege.

PhilHealth holds series of meetings with stakeholders on UHC implementation THE Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) recently staged a series of virtual meetings with their various stakeholders in order to keep them abreast on latest developments on the implementation of Republic Act 11223, otherwise known as the Universal Health Care Law. Around 1,200 participants from different sectors comprising of employers and business owners, labor and overseas contract worker groups, recruitment and manning agencies, health care professionals and medical societies, and media practitioners have attended the half-day sessions organized by the state health insurer.

ZAMBOANGA CITY – After two decades, Internally Displaced Persons relocated back to their communities that were taken away by terrorists.

The military and Sulu Provincial Task Force on Ending Local Armed Conflict (PTF-ELAC) constructed infrastructures and livelihood projects on the former battleground

between Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) bandits and government troops.

The PTF-ELAC is Sulu’s version of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict, the whole-of-nation approach to attaining inclusive and sustainable peace.

(ID), said Saturday the projects in Barangay Bakung, Patikul included a village hall, 2.4-kilometer farmto-market road, learning center, public toilet, water system, streetlights, and egglaying facilities to serve as the livelihood of residents in 118 households.

How do we live our life with Christ?

THE gospel of Friday of the 4th Week of Easter has that interesting passage where Christ tells in no unclear terms: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (Jn 14,6) What should immediately come to mind is the thought of how we can be with Christ such that he and us can just be one, he in us and we in him, and thus, enabling us to be with our Father God who wants us to be with him, since we are his image and likeness, children of his, sharers of his divine life.

It’s a tough challenge, of course, but we are assured

by Christ himself that all the means for this purpose have been given to us. If we would just use our Christian faith to the hilt, we know that we are not only given things as means to reach God. We are given Christ himself.

Perhaps, the problem we have is that we allow our faith to go in a passive, mute and remote mode. We need to activate it and put it in its loudest and most immediate condition in our life.

In this regard, we should realize that we would need

to pray, giving it always priority such that all our activities are somehow turned into prayer, even while we are working or resting and going through all sorts of situations and predicaments in life. In other words, that we should make ourselves authentic contemplative souls who not only are aware of Christ’s presence everywhere but also are actively following him.

We have to understand that we will always need him, like a child will always need his father, except that in our relation with Christ, we can never outgrow that dependence on him, while a child can outgrow his dependence on his father, and will in fact, after a time, be the one to take care of his father.

Not so with us with respect to our dependence on Christ. In fact, the older we get and the more knowledge and experience we gain, the more dependent we ought to be on Christ. And that’s simply because our growth in stature, knowledge and experience will always lead us to more complicated situations that would need more guidance from Christ.

cence, our goodness the more knowledge and experience we gain. We tend to fall into pride and vanity, to be self-seeking and self-absorbed the more we progress in life.

We have to remember that Christ has always something to say about anything in our life, be it good or bad, a victory or a defeat, a cause for joy or for sadness. Yes, even in the most mundane and technical things, and in the most social and political issues, Christ has something to say. Let’s never think that there is something in our life where Christ is irrelevant or is not needed.

It’s important that we be with him always. We may not understand or catch everything that he is showing us, but as long as we are with him, things will just turn out right. As St. Paul would put it: “We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.” (Rom 8,28)*

Dr. Jesus Guiab Cures the Sick & Ills of Society IT has been said that when the body (form) suffers, the spirit (consciousness) rejoices because we are more than forms, we are consciousness even prior to taking a body. Consciousness is eternal, the body is just transient. Based on this truism, I now fully understand why an excellent young doctor then named Dr. Jesus Guiab turned down an offer to work in the United States in the early sixties as a medical doctor with a gargantuan monthly salary and opting to go to work in far flung troubled municipalities in Mindanao to serve the sick and the downtrodden, and for free at that!

In a world that is giving high veneration to the profit-motive, deeply buried in unbridle materialism and consumerism , addicted to the whims and caprices of the mundane, no way will the young doctor’s selfless attitude be understood. The spirit of service, amidst morale collapse and religious apathy, seems to have vanished in a world that is suffering from collective insanity, controlled by egoic mind that prioritizes self-aggrandizement and instant pursuit of wealth and power.

I can liken Dr. Guiab whom I I had known before in Wao Lanao del Sur as an excellent young doctor in the sixties during my elementary years to no less than the great Mahatma Gandhi who liberated India from an Imperial Power, the British Empire, where the sun does not set. Mahatma Gandhi, who was then a popular lawyer left his profession, worked as a farmer with the Indian People and led a peaceful revolution called Satyagraha or Love Force.

Knowing how God-loving Dr. Guiab is, what also came to my mind is a young Prince named Siddhartha who abandon his princely title and opted to live simply but with high spirituality who later became the much revered Buddha.

Humble as he is, the good doctor will not accept such comparison but after reading his amazing book entitled, “Lives in the Hands of God,” I truly believe that his compassionate life has already leaped to the sublime through transcendental spiritual dimension. As Chairman then of the Cooperative Development Authority, I had travelled to different regions of Mindanao and I was so happy to hear his

name being mentioned as the best doctor providing excellent medical services to poor patients for free.

It is biblically mentioned in the Ecclesiastes that “for everything there is a purpose under Heaven.” Why must a tall, good looking young doctor who could easily have wealth, fame or power opted to serve the least of his brethren and even face threats and a dangerous life in troubled municipalities of Lanao del Sur? Veneration to wealth, fame or power that has already captured the mindset of all governments, all institutions, all universities and even of religious groups are all transient in the world of forms. What matters is the oneness with all of God’s creation as we are all consciousness (spirit) and must be well-rooted to the Unseen Being, the Eternal called God. Indeed, “what would profit a man if he gains the whole world but suffers the loss of his soul.”

PEESO mega job fair solicits more than 2,000 job vacancies in Tagum

TAGUM CITY – In celebration of Labor day last May 1, the City Government of Tagum facilitated a Post Labor Day Mega Job Fair last May 5 which solicited more than 2,000 job vacancies for Tagumenyo applicants at the City Hall Atrium.

522 Tagumenyos tried their luck during the Mega Job Fair. 36 among them got hired on the spot while 277 were able to proceed to the next level which included another set of interview and new documents to pass.

The local government unit through its Public Education and Employment Services Office took this as a chance to tap other agencies to provide services during the job fair such as PhilHealth registration, Social Security Services

registration, blood pressure checking, Bureau of Internal Revenue TIN registration, Philippine Military Academy application, Land and Transportation Office services, Department of Trade and Industry Negosyo Fair, and orientation on study, live, and work in Australia – all of which happened at the City Hall Atrium.

Meanwhile, Kasambahay Basic Life Support Training occurred at the City Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Office, while the Livelihood Training for Persons with Disabilities transpired at Evie’s.

New green space opens in Tagum

TAGUM CITY – The newlyfacelifted Tagumpay Park formerly known as Rotary Park opened officially last May 6 after its blessing and inauguration which also adds to the roster of new attractions in the city under the Rellon-Estabillo administration that champions environmental preservation.

The 18.5 million peso Tagumpay Park project is part of the Green Green Green Program of the Department of Budget and Management Office which aims to transform concrete jungles into environmentfriendly tourist attractions.

Prior to the selection of the area for the project, the City Government of Tagum conducted a study on which places needed rehabilitation. Tagumpay Park was then chosen to be part of the program.

The park features a gazebo which is accessible for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, children’s playground, bicycle lane, and bike parking area. In addition, a masterpiece of Kublai Millan was donated to the park known as the giant carabao sculpture made of scrap metals from hospital beds and other recyclable metal parts which sym-

DSWD Region X’s TS Odette Operation continues WITH the onslaught of Tropical Storm Odette in Northern Mindanao, the DSWD Field Office X continuously augments assistance and services to its affected families in the region.

As of May 10, 2022, DSWD through its Regional Disaster Response Management Division has provided

financial assistance to a total of 2,909 survivors who failed to receive assistance from the local government unit.

The ongoing payout in Region 10 is in response to the request of their respective LGUs who have not foreseen the additional number of the typhoon’s affected families.

The TS Odette finan-

cial assistance is based on DILG-DSWD-DND Joint Memorandum Circular No. 4 Series of 2021 and Local Budget Circular (LBC) No. 141. These provisions state that the affected individuals shall receive an amount of PhP 1,000.00 per affected individual, with a maximum amount of PhP 5,000.00 per family.

Mathematicians coax fluid equations into nonphysical solutions

THE famied NavierStokes equations can lead to cases where more than one result is possible but only in an extremely narrow set of situations. For nearly two centuries, all kinds of researchers interested in how fluids flow have turned to the Navier-Stokes equations. But mathematicians still harbor questions about them. Foremost among them: how well do the equations adhere to reality?

Fluids are inherently difficult to describe as their constituent molecules don’t move as one. To account for this, the Navier-Stokes equations describe a fluid using velocity fields that specify a

speed and direction for each point in 3D space.

The big question that mathematicians want to answer: will the Navier-Stokes equations always work for any starting velocity field into the arbitrarily distant future? In particular, mathematicians wonder whether a solution that starts out smooth i.e. its velocity fields don’t change abruptly from one nearby point to another will always remain smooth.

It’s possible that after a while, sharp spikes that represent infinite speed may pop up.

This outcome, which mathematicians call blowup, will deviate from the behavior of a real-life fluid.

Nowadays, anyone with a desire can gain access to vast amounts of data and information via various websites and e-based platforms.

But, without education, can information be transformed into knowledge?

Only education can help us interpret various issues and events in our lives. We can learn not only from our textbooks, but also from our teachers and mentors who teach us how to read those books. We learn from our own lives as well, through practical experiences and hands-on training. In short, education enables us to gain the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes we need to make informed decisions, live meaningful lives, and play active roles in modern society.

We have been dealing with a massive crisis since the beginning of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc around the world, disrupting our lives and livelihoods.

As a result, all enrolled students in schools, colleges, and universities have been unable to attend classes for nearly a year due to restrictions imposed to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus. Students have suffered greatly because of this.

When millions of young people are urged to stay at home with their families and educational in-

stitutions remain closed, online education appears to be the only option for ensuring these students’ educational continuity. But the question remains whether we were willing to use these alternative methods of providing education in our country without compromising the quality of education provided to our students. The short answer is no, we were not. Many students in our schools, still lack access to computers and internet connectivity at home, making standard online education out of reach. We still don’t know how many students have access to broadband internet, 4G smartphones, tablets, laptops or desktop computers, and other essential technologies for online classes. It has also been observed that many families only have one 4G smartphone at home, which must be shared by the earning members of the family struggling to continue with their shrinking livelihood opportunities and to ‘work from home,’ if possible. The children at home, of various ages, are left vying for the family’s lone device.

After all, the strain on families is considerable. Jobs are being lost, and incomes are being reduced.

The world has been shaken by the pandemic, a situation that is affecting the lives of countless communities, families and students.

The crisis unleashed was indeed one for which society was not prepared. Pillars such as equality in education have been affected, as households’ access to technology is uneven. The education system has been challenged all over the world, but we must remember that with each challenge comes an opportunity for improvement.

E-learning also added to the misconception about children’s preference for electronic tasks while studies show the Internet’s potential to distract children due to the multiplicity of tasks they are required to perform.

Now, we have an unprecedented body of knowledge that may help us. We need science, evidence and statistics. Cognitive psychology has witnessed a quantum leap in recent decades. The economics of education has flourished with new methods and data while statistics have blossomed through largescale studies. A new future

is in sight.

As we reach the twomark of the initial wave of pandemic-induced school shutdowns, academic normalcy remains out of reach for many students, educators and parents. In addition to surging Covid-19 cases at the end of 2021, schools have faced severe staff shortages, high rates of absenteeism and hybrid classes. Furthermore, students and educators continue to struggle with mental health challenges, higher rates of violence and misbehavior and concerns about lost instructional time.

From our perspective, these test score drops in no way indicate that these students represent a lost generation.

To provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, the K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education composed of six years in primary education, four years of junior high school, and two years of Senior High School.

In addition, SHS refers to Grades 11 and 12, the final two years of the K-12 program that the Department of Education has been implementing since 2012.

Students begin studying topics in Senior High School that will prepare them for their chosen professional route.

In the former system, high school was divided into four years: first, second, third and fourth year. Grades 7 through 10, often known as junior high school, correspond to those four years now (JHS).

It should be noted that Senior High now has two grade levels and no longer refers only to the senior year of high school; On the other hand, Junior High School

now has four grade levels and no longer refers solely to the second to last year of high school. To clarify, per Republic Act No. 10533 (Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013), you must finish Kindergarten, Grades 1–6 (elementary), Grades 7–10 (junior high school), and Grades 11–12 (senior high school) over the course of 13 years before receiving a high school certificate.

Lastly, students cannot be forced to stay in school for another two years, but if they drop out after Grade 10, they will only obtain a JHS certificate rather than a high school diploma. Students from the K-12 generation who do not complete Grade 12 will be disadvantaged since they will be unable to enroll in a college degree or technical-vocational certificate program without a high school diploma. They will also miss out on an opportunity to develop skills that would enable them to find work immediately after graduation or equip them to establish a business.***

Stay hungry

Children crossing gushing streams and enduring long walks to school; an elderly graduating from high school; a security guard passing the bar examinations – at some point, we may have heard some of these stories; stories of pursuing education, stories of hard work, stories of success.

But while they have their own story, I know you have yours too. In this diverse society come diverse populations of students who fight different battles every day. But let me tell you this, despite whatever you are dealing with right now – even with the seemingly unending pandemic – do not give up on education. Sometimes you may feel that education might just be a waste of time when the end point would be to work anyways. Most times, you may feel that right now, education might be pointless because of the current online setup; that the pandemic won’t end for a few more years so why bother, right? However, what we fail to see is the understanding and life-long training that education gives us – critical thinking, hard work, and empowerment.

Do not give up on education because it trains your mind, it equips you with understanding about the world you live in, it helps you think critically about the problems that may come your way; it helps you grow intellectually. In the advent of COVID-19, putting education in our arsenal also helps us in maintaining our personal and

family’s health and security.

Putting education away means you are willing to strip away your armor just before a boss fight – you will be vulnerable.

Do not give up on education as it trains your heart and body to persevere for the things that truly matter, it keeps you focused on the goals that you set, and it keeps you grounded on the values of hard work and humility. Lastly, do not give up on education because it will empower you – empower you with wisdom, empower you with confidence, and empower you to become a better and wellinformed part of the society.

So, in whatever level you are right now, whether you’re in grade school, high school, or college, or even if you are now a professional, I tell you, do not stop your pursuit for learning. Even when the health crisis that is constantly hampering our individual growth, do not waiver. This is when learning is most fruitful and worthwhile doing. Do not let whatever obstacle hinder you from your goal. Water the seed of curiosity and marvel in you.

Do not be afraid to ask, do not be ashamed to acknowledge the fact that there are more things that you need to learn and skills that you need to develop – for this is when you truly grow.

To you, the youth of today, stay hungry; stay hungry for knowledge, understanding, learning, and empowerment – for these are the things that the world can never take away.

The amazing couple can be likened to the two wings of an eagle to scale the heights in serving the people of Wao. Indeed, Wao became a developmental show window as then Mayor Guiab was so excellent in accessing resources directly from the Central Government as many Secretaries and Senators then were her former classmates in the college of law especially the late Sen. Bobby Tañada and Sen. Romulo.

If one’s consciousness has debunked the mundane to leap to the sublime, Dr. Guiab’s spiritual development has brought him to that level of transcendental dimension where a higher intelligence is miraculously in control. There were multitude of events that support that contention. One of these happened on February 12, 1973 during the height of the Christian and Moslem Conflict called the “Ilaga Offensives.” A group of Christians were so alarmed on on-going exchange of gun shots between the Ilagas led by Kumander Kidlat and the Moslem combatants. They ran to Guiab’s residence and inform him of the on-going battle. In his pajamas, he rode to the place of the shooting that centered on the home of no less than Sultan Mamaco Salipada. As narrated by those who were present, “Dr. Guiab walked into the melee and asked everyone to stop shooting. Kung hindi dumating si Dr. Guiab, patay na sana si Sultan Mamaco.”

In my dialogue with Tito Jess, I asked him why must be put himself in the firing zone when he could have then and there be killed?

He told me that the killing of Sultan Mamaco who is considered the “Father of Wao,’ who was the original Sultan who had welcomed the thousands of settlers coming from all over the country and declared Wao an “open land,” could have triggered an all-out war, like the “Marawi Siege,” and Wao would not be livable anymore. The killing of Sultan Mamaco could result to the expansion of “war” that would involve the “Blackshirts” and the ISIS and hundreds, if not thousands, would have been killed.

That higher intelligence had made the God-loving doctor an instrument for peace, to rectify that col-

lective insanity that have categorically shown the fallacies of life and religions in contemporaneous global society amidst the non-stop denigration of spirituality.

Yes, these fallacies of life and religions have buried humanity deeply into the mundane of forms which should now be debunked to give way to that higher transcendental dimension that Dr. Jesus Guiab is now exemplifying, being true to his name, JESUS. Please remember that we are all consciousness deeply rooted to that Eternal Source of all life forms and of ONE LIFE itself.
