MALAYBALAY City--For the first time, a Zubiri has tasted electoral defeat in Bukidnon.

Incumbent Malaybalay City Mayor Ignacio Zubiri, who ran as second district representative of the province, lost to a newcomer – lawyer John Flores.

The mayor, a nephew of incumbent Gov. Jose Ma. R. Zubiri Jr., took a beat-

ing in Malaybalay, where he obtained 34,814 votes against Flores’s 43,967.

Zubiri only won in Cabanglasan, one of the second district’s four other towns, according to the partial results posted on the website of the Commission on Elections as of 10:00 a.m.

CAGAYAN de Oro City--Reelectionist Mayor Oscar Moreno leads overwhelmingly over his opponent businessman Pompee La Viña based on the ABS-CBN Halalan 2019 poll count.

Moreno, running for his third and final term, garnered 155,579 votes compared to the 88,711 votes that La Viña had as of 10:25 a.m. in the ABS-CBN Halalan 2019 poll count.

4 kids, 4 others injured in 3 shooting incidents

GANASSI, Lanao del Sur-Eight people were wounded in three separate shooting incidents that could have been perpetrated by followers of rival political clans in this town afternoon of election day.

The military said among the victims were four children from out of town who were hit in the crossfire as the family vehicle was passing through.

Both the military and the police reported that the first incident occurred around 4 p.m. in Barangay Taliogon, when a still unidentified gunman shot 20-year-old Maki Macapodi in Barangay Taliogon, a mountainous village some seven kilometers away from the poblacion.

Maki is related to incumbent Mayor Al-Rashid Macapodi, who is running for vice mayor.

4ID: Elections in NorMin, Caraga, peaceful DOST to preserve weaving skills of Marawi IDPs

CAMP EVANGELISTA, Cagayan de Oro City -- The conduct of the national and local elections (NLE) 2019 in northern Mindanao and Caraga regions were very peaceful with no electionrelated violent incident recorded during election day.

More than six thousand troops coming from the 4th Infantry “Diamond” Division, Philippine Army successfully secured the voters and the polling centers which resulted in orderly and peaceful NLE in the two regions.

Despite the 61 identified election areas of concerns due to the presence of CPPNPA terrorist and intense political rivalry, there was no reported election-related violent incident (ERVI) based on the 4ID Election Monitoring Action Center (EMAC).

Meanwhile, 4ID troops, together with the Philippine National Police (PNP), are still on red alert status to maintain peace and order while election paraphernalia are still being retrieved from the polling precincts.

The security forces will also continue to monitor the CPP-NPA Terrorist and other lawless elements in order to thwart any terroristic activities that may hamper the canvassing and the retrieval of election paraphernalia.

OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental -- A total of 265 Grade 3-5 pupils and Grade 6 of batch 2019 first PAK beneficiaries from the 17 barangay’s of Ozamiz City received Green Thumb Awards and customized school supplies during their Recognition Day, May 9.

The City Nutrition’s Office, in coordination with City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC), Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of the Interior and Local Govern-

ment (DILG) spearheaded the awarding ceremony of Prutas Alang sa Kinaiyahan (PAK) Project, a greening through fruit trees planting with the help of children; and a practical project to achieve greening by planting high value fruit trees which is done annually among Grade 1 pupils.

According to the City Nutrition’s Office, PAK is an eco-nutrition initiative towards caring for the environment and promotion of good nutrition.

Officer Lelit Navarez said PAK aims to provide better nutrition for school children by involving them and their parents to plant high-value fruit trees and eventually produce organically-grown fruits; and generate additional income for the family) while instilling in them the values of caring for the environment.

ILIGAN CITY -- To revive the handloom weaving among Maranaos, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) provides technical and financial assistance to the displaced Maranaos following the Marawi siege that happened almost two years ago.

The DOST in partnership with the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology’s (MSU-IIT) Maranao Collectible and the local government unit, the project aims to preserve and strengthen the handloom weaving industry, as it represents culture and tradition of Mindanaons especially the Maranaos.

Keno Elumbaring, Project Assistant for DOSTTFBM Programs said the project supports the rebuilding of Maranaos’ livelihood.

The beneficiaries include the home-based IDPs currently staying within Iligan City, Cagayan De Oro and other areas of Lanao del Norte.

“This is part of DOST’s support to rebuilding and reorganizing the loom weavers affected by the conflict

in Marawi City,” Elumbaring said.

The target beneficiaries will undergo skills training on weaving and hands-on activities.

DOST will also help in the production and promotion of local hand-woven crafts. A loom weaving equipment will be provided to the beneficiaries including the installation of loom weaving machines in the identified sites.

“DOST will monitor and assess the beneficiaries if they are able to improve and enhance their skills in handloom weaving,” Elumbaring added.

The project implementation includes the setting-up of weaving center within selected areas in Marawi City and its neighboring communities, which were also affected by the siege.

The DOST is a member agency of the Task Force Marawi’s Subcommittee on Business and Livelihood.

It targets to preserve the cultural and artistic value of the weaving industry among Marawi residents.

Group calls for total prohibition on importing ‘hazardous’ waste

ENVIRONMENTAL justice group BAN Toxics issued a call for the immediate prohibition of importing hazardous waste and other garbage in light of the failure of the Canadian government to take back its illegal garbage export by the May 15 deadline.

“The righteous anger that Filipinos have expressed over the continued presence of the Canadian trash continues to be frustrated by the long delay in its return to Canada,” explained Reynaldo San Juan, Deputy Executive Director of BAN Toxics. “President Duterte expressed our collective anger, and we need to channel this by taking concreted action and ratify the Basel Ban Amendment immediately.”

The Basel Ban Amendment is an amendment to the Basel Convention on the Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes, an international treaty designed to reduce and control the movement of hazardous wastes between countries. The Basel Ban, as it is called, prohibits the export of hazardous wastes from rich to poorer

countries, such as the Philippines.

The Philippines ratified the Basel Convention in 1994 and has yet to ratify the Basel Ban Amendment.

The Basel Ban Amendment was designed to protect developing countries avoid becoming a dumping ground for unwanted toxic waste and garbage.

The Philippines has b een vic tim to illegal dumping of hazardous wastes and garbage. The Canadian trash is just one of several incidents. Just early this year, around 1,400 tons of household waste from South Korea arrived in the country. The collective effort of government groups and nongovernment organizations led to the repatriation of the waste to South Korea, with environmental advocates citing the incident as a huge success in the fight against transboundary movements of hazardous wastes.

Still, the country faces a number of issues related to hazardous waste shipments.

In 2013, 50 container vans containing household waste were shipped to the Philippines from Canada. The

waste has remained in the country over half a decade later, leading President Duterte to issue a deadline for Canada to take back the waste. Various reports have noted that Canada has agreed to take back the waste, but their actions remain to be seen.

“We appeal to President Duterte, to ratify the Basel Ban Amendment imme-

diately,” added San Juan.

“Put the responsibility of policing hazardous waste exporters to the country of export, such as Canada.

We need to be smart in addressing the problem, and the Basel Ban Amendment is a valuable tool towards protecting a significant portion of the population who are put at risk by toxic waste dumping.”

Maximize yourself and opportunities

THINK a minute.

“Any man can be a success, no matter how poor he started in life.” This was said by Clement Stone, a highly successful businessman who began his career as a 16-year-old who sold insurance from door to door.

After only four years he started his own agency, and later owned his own insurance company worth more than $150 million.

Stone says we need to program ourselves to succeed, similar to how a computer is programmed. In fact, the modern computer is only a simple, poor imitation of the far more advanced and powerful computer of our human mind.

Today and tomorrow we will talk about the three essential ingredients you must program into yourself for success. First, and most important, is your own motivation to make the best choices that will move you to the best actions and changes. A rich owner of a woman’s cosmetics company told his secret for success.

He said: “I never promised a woman that my products would make her beautiful, but I always gave her the hope of looking better.”

With no hope of im-

proving and changing, you cannot motivate yourself.

Hope is your strong belief that you really can reach your goal and expectation.

You must believe each day that you are getting closer to your goal, because you know that you are doing what it takes to get there.

It’s not just believing it, but starting to do it now—hour by hour, day by day—until it becomes your way of living and working every day.

Another powerful way to motivate is by example.

Clement Stone had a young salesman who did not believe he could sell insurance to the kind of people who lived in his town. So Stone went to work with the young salesman for one day to show him how.

Stone asked the young man a few questions about his town’s people. Then Stone prayed and asked God to help him do his very best.

Afterwards, Stone confidently went from house to house and sold an insurance policy to every single person he talked to that day! These were the same people the young salesman said would never buy insurance.

••• “Everyone wants to succeed. Some are even willing to work for it.” There simply is no substitute for work. But

we must make sure our work is working for us. Today we will look at the final steps we need to take to climb the right ladder to real success.

Another important step is to work using your own abilities and personality. A wise man said: “Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.” One of your greatest feelings and accomplishments will be when you discover what you do well and enjoy doing.

Your own special abilities are like power tools with which to build your life of success. An Olympic coach said: “You cannot put in what God left out.” So make the most of what your Maker has put in you. Do what you were specially designed to do. “Dogs cannot fly and fish cannot climb trees.” But neither do they try! They simply do what they were created to do naturally. So learn your own special abilities and match them with your job and career.

The final, most important step is to make sure you are pursuing the best opportunity that will give you the best life. Remember, success is not having money, it is having a high-quality life. That is real wealth. Just as we want to get the most value for our money, even more we need to get the most

value for our time, since time is what life is made of!

When you run out of time, you run out of life. So make sure you don’t get “ripped off ” by spending your life’s time on things that do not give you real, lasting value in return. You only get one life to live, so get the best deal possible for what you spend your life on.

Ask yourself: Is the extra money I’m getting from working extra hours worth every hour I spend away from my spouse and children?

Remember: “Overtime pays more because of what you’re missing.” Don’t get ripped off by working hard all your life just for money and then learn too late you did not get the quality of life and love you’ve always wanted and were created to have.

It only makes sense to ask the One Who gave you your life’s time and talents, to start leading your life and career?

Each day He will help you take the right steps to your true success He planned for you to have and enjoy. But it can only start happening if you ask Him to take full charge of your life.

A YOUTH’S PERSPECTIVE

The messiah and our road ahead

A TREACHERY of the grandest order now unfolds as the election precincts closed yesterday – the Comelec’s transparency server has repeatedly held up and a dubious pattern has emerged from the election results.

These extremely suspect developments stand on the shoulders of the military and police’s red-tagging and black propaganda of progressive candidates, Martial Law in Mindanao, the electoral campaigns of crooks, liars, and murderers, and Smartmatic’s return as a service provider for the election.

Duterte and his administration have made sure that every condition has been achieved for the victory of sycophants and yes-men.

The president himself has even announced the importance of vote-buying, an outlook that his preferred candidates have certainly taken to heart.

However, our disappointment and rage, as justified as they are, must be directed to those in power and never at the people who have suppos-

edly handed them power over the country.

As Filipino poet and Marcos-era revolutionary Eman Lacaba once hailed, “Awakened, the masses are messiah”, and if anything, we have learned that progress and justice doesn’t just require a “woke” youth but an awakened and empowered public.

We need a public that knows that we have all been strung and played for fools thinking that the source of our misery is our fellow oppressed, denied, and victimized.

We need a public that is furious that we have been robbed of both our treasury and our democracy.

We need a public that rejects the clowns, crocodiles, and criminals that now have mastery over these islands.

Thus, our task after this disastrous and fraudulent election isn’t to book flights overseas nor to scorn our country as an unlovable mess. No. Our task is simple but arduous: to educate, organize, and mobilize the masses; to awaken more of our messiah.

We must feed, clothe, and employ those whose bellies grumble with hunger. We must teach and empathize

with those who refuse to learn and sympathize. We must embolden those who are afraid and represent the unheard.

We must go to the masses and serve them.

We must now undertake a campaign to exact justice from the frauds, and while this campaign will start with demanding transparency and accountability of the elections, our struggles must also carry on the platforms of the opposition: a truly living wage, enough employment, the end of contractualization, free land distribution for farmers, national industrialization, and territorial integrity and sovereignty, among others.

Likewise, we must safeguard our rights, livelihoods, and our very lives against the incoming depredations of Duterte’s Senate.

It is guaranteed that the President’s most heinous policies will scoot past the legislative branch: children in conflict with the law will be criminalized, the drug war will be pursued with murderous ado, the death penalty will come, charter change is inevitable, and the sale of our territories and resources to China is inevitable.

It will be an egregious mistake to undermine the precious unities we have built in an effort to find solace in the results of this election. Every effort must be dispatched to enlighten and empower the masses, just as our forebears have successfully done against the tyrannies of Marcos and Estrada.

But we don’t have to look far to a multitude of reasons to hope. Despite the massive fraud, progressive party-lists are ready to assume seats and fight the uphill battle inside Duterte’s congress. Despite the maddening disenfranchisement of voters, the youth have translated their fury for a thirst to learn and mobilize. In fact, thousands of students across the country have already taken to the streets to pledge an oath to fight and prevail against tyranny.

Maj. Gen. Cirilito E. Sobejana, Commander of 6th ID, led the inauguration assisted by his Assistant Division Commander, Brig.

Gen. Juvymax Uy. The new and refurbished facilities are part of the camp improvements of 6th ID that will benefit and uplift Kampilan troops’ welfare and living conditions; which is among the administrative priorities of the Commander.

The simple ceremony was attended by the General, Special, Personal Staffs, Post and Tenant unit Commanders, and other personnel of 6th ID. Also present in the event, as the guest speaker is retired Maj. Gen. Antonio Seville, who is also a lawn tennis enthusiast. He encouraged the military personnel to engage in sports as a form of maintaining good health.

“Age is no barrier. It’s a limitation you put in your mind.” Retired Maj. Gen. Seville said.

“Physical activity keeps your heart and blood vessels healthy, helps prevent

many health problems and makes you feel younger.” He added.

“We still have a lot of things to do to improve our Division facilities, so your active participation is very much needed,” Maj. Gen. Sobejana said.

“As soldiers who ought to serve and protect the people, we deserve to have a comfortable place to stay.

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte -- The former members of the new people’s army (NPA) terrorist group are urging their former allies who are still active in the resistance against the government to find their way back to the mainstream society.

Edward Gultia, a teacher who previously served the Tribal Filipino Program in Surigao del Sur (TRIFPSS) for 19 years, revealed that the school is not accredited by the Department of Education and is run by New People’s Army (NPA).

“What were inculcated to us during exclusive gatherings in a secluded and mountainous part in Surigao del Sur where these NPA rebels inhabit are plainly the same with what were being taught to the students of TRIFPSS,” revealed Gultia, adding that the learners would grow up hating the government.

Sonny Boy Acebedo, a former student of the TRIFPSS, also shared how the NPA rebels had indoctrinated the students by influencing them to adopt radically different beliefs against the government, and by teaching them on how to manipulate and use firearms at a very young age.

A LOT CAN HAPPEN OVER TIME -- over a year ago, aspiring electricians of Brgy. Indangan in Davao City have become fullfledged electricians after their graduation for Project B.E.S.T. (Basic Electrician Skills Training) last April 18, 2018.

Project B.E.S.T. is a project of Davao Light and the Aboitiz Foundation in partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA)-Davao City and the Department of Social Works and Development (DSWD)- XI. Fast forward only one year later, on April 29, 2019, and these beneficiaries have teamed up, formed “Barangay Indangan Electrician SLP Association” (BIESA) and have finally put up their very own hardware store.

Nineteen (19) beneficia-

ries, who are also part of the 4Ps (Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program), have become the co-owners of the hardware store situated along the premises of the Barangay Hall of Indangan. They have received a seed capital assistance from DSWD-XI under its Sustainable Livelihood Program worth P285,000 to jump start their hardware store.

This, while also being the barangay’s on-call electricians should the community find concerns and problems with their electrical connections at home.

This is a good example of how the provision of opportunities for development will help disadvantaged members of the community alleviate poverty through skills training. Great success stories happen when different government sectors and private institutions

unite and are in synergy to reach out and extend help where it is needed.

These electricians will remain hopeful as they have been armed with a complete set of skills, knowledge and grit to improve their status in life.

PH could tap Japanese MICE market to increase arrivals: envoy

MANILA -- Japan Ambassador to the Philippines Koji Haneda on Tuesday said the Philippines could tap his country’s MICE market to further increase the arrivals of Japanese to the country.

MICE refers to meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions, a market in the tourism industry involved in booking and facilitating seminars or other events.

“MICE is perhaps one area that you can tap. Allin-all, I hope that you can attract more Japanese tourists to the Philippines,” he told reporters in an interview in Makati City.

The country used to rank eighth worldwide and first in Asia in the annual listing of world convention destinations in 1982.

In 2016, Philippine MICE placed 48th in 116 countries worldwide and 14th among

35 countries in the Asia Pacific and the Middle East region in terms of having the most number of meetings.

The envoy said he sees the efforts of the Philippine government in exploring opportunities on this niche area of tourism.

Tokyo remains a top tourist market in the Philippines, ranking third in the latest arrivals statistics of the Department of Tourism (DOT) this year. From January to March 2019, Japanese visitors reached 177,769.

‘A lot to offer’ During his trip to Boracay recently, Haneda said he and Tourism chief Bernadette Romulo-Puyat also discussed other ways to strengthen tourism in both countries.

Tulad po ng sinasabi ng karamihan, this midterm election can be treated as a referendum. This victory can be attributed to the performance of this administration.

Tanging Diyos lang ang nakakaalam ng inyong tadhana sa buhay.

Tapos na ang halalan. Panahon nang magkaisa na tayong lahat para simulan ang mas mahalagang gawain sa pagsusulong ng kaunlaran ng ating bayan. Sama-sama nating iangat ang katayuan ng bawat Pilipino sa pamamagitan ng mabilis, maayos at maaasahang serbisyo mula sa gobyernong nagmamalasakit sa tao.

Floirendo, Del Rosario lose hold on Davao del Norte DAVAO CITY -- A neophyte politician ended the 40-year rule of the Del Rosario family over Davao del Norte province as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) proclaimed on Tuesday the winners in the May 13 elections.

Proclaimed winner for governor of Davao del Norte is Edwin Jubahib, winning over Rodney del Rosario, the son of former congressman and governor Rodolfo del Rosario who retired from politics in 2016.

The senior Del Rosario held many positions as a former assemblyman, congressman, and former minister of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Jubahib got 275,984 votes as against the 166,870 votes of Rodney. Rodney’s brother, incumbent Davao del Norte Governor Anthony del Rosario lost to Pantaleon Alvarez as 1st District representative of the province.

Jubahib and Alvarez were proclaimed winners for governor and first district representative, respectively, on Tuesday afternoon. Both Jubahib and Alvarez ran under the ticket of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).

In a statement on Tuesday, Jubahib said his victory is the victory of people of Davao del Norte, especially the poor.

Pag-IBIG Fund posts P9 B net income in Q1 2019, up 11% Pag-IBIG Fund recorded higher earnings in the first three months of the year as demand for its loan products surge and collections continue to improve.

For the first quarter of 2019, the Fund’s gross income amounted to P12.05 billion while net income reached P8.96 billion, up by 17.3 percent and 10.5 percent, respectively, from its earnings in the same quarter last year.

“In January, we reported that Pag-IBIG Fund recorded its highest ever income of P33.17 billion in 2018, which is 10 percent better than the previous year. The double digit growth of our income continues in the first quarter of 2019. DAVAO CITY -- Newly elected representatives and councilors of Davao City’s 2nd and 3rd Districts were proclaimed on Tuesday afternoon, but the proclamation of the winning candidates in the 3rd District was delayed due to the failure of the clustered precincts from three schools to transmit election returns.

Atty. Krisna Samantha Caballero, Davao City election officer and chair of the board of canvassers (BOC), told reporters after the proclamation that they didn’t know what caused the “very short delay” at Davao City National High School, Don Cesario Villa Abrille Elementary School and Bolton Elementary School.

“That’s why, hindi ko pa alam, tinatanong ko pa kaya (I do not know, I’m still asking) I cannot talk about it right now kung may problema din ba sa transmission or hindi lang napasok (if there was a problem in the transmission or it was not included),” she said.

As of 5:40 p.m., the BOC had yet to proclaim the winning candidates in the 3rd district. Caballero headed the proclamation at the session hall of the Sanguniang Panlungsod attended by winning candidates, comprising veterans and newbies, and their families and supporters.

Vincent J. Garcia, who served as 1st district representative from 2001 to 2010, was proclaimed at 3:48 p.m.

Police say PUVs used in vote buying in Davao Norte

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte -- Reports that public utility vans (PUVs) were used as medium of vote buying reached the police, the head of Davao del Norte Police Provincial Office (DNPPO) revealed in an interview.

Colonel Ferlu Silvio said he had received reports that PUVs transported voters and vote buying took place inside the van en route to polling places during Monday’s elections.

However, Silvio did not identify the areas where this method of vote buying happened because “vans are mobile and we have yet to accost and catch them in the act.”

“But if caught in the act of transporting voters, pasensyahay na lang jud ta ani (sorry for them),” he said.

Through network of informants and concerned

citizens, DNPPO has gathered the report which was still being validated by the Highway Patrol Group and other “covert and overt” police operatives, he added.

Silvio said he also received reports of another scheme of influencing voters, and this one involved the use of bottled water on which the name of candidates were written.

“These are very innovative means of influencing voters,” he said.

He noted that reports regarding vote buying were widespread nationwide. To break this apparent culture,Silvio urged the public to mount a campaign against vote buying “right after the election and not just during election period.”

“This is a challenge to everyone: let us help the electorates not to get swayed by vote buying,” he said.

Comelec sent teachers to war with defective arms – ACT Chairperson Joselyn Martinez.

Malfunctioning and defective machines Martinez proceeded to present data gathered by ACT’s election hotline in relation to the conduct of the May 13 elections.

According to the group, Vote-Counting Machine (VCM) error and failure emerged to be the ‘single most pressing problem’ of the electoral board and the voters, whereas the Voter Registration Verification Machine (VRVM) was deemed as a ‘total failure’ so much that it was entirely abandoned in several polling precincts.

“67.72% of the total reports we have documented had to do with machine and paraphernalia issues,

putting into question the ampleness of COMELEC’s technical preparations for the elections, and whether the billions spent on acquiring these were worth the taxpayers’ money,” asked Martinez.

COMELEC admitted that around 400–600 VCMs malfunctioned during the elections, a 220% increase of machine malfunction incidences compared to the 2016 national and local elections. Martinez responded and criticized COMELEC as ‘teachers bore the consequences of the failure and defects of these machines’.

“Not only did they have to be resourceful in troubleshooting the machines and in exhausting all possible means to ensure that the

voting process continues immediately, but they also had to endure voters’ irk and disappointment in the resulting chaos and long lines in polling precicnts,” lamented Martinez.

Martinez noted that they have also received reports of machines printing receipts inconsistent to the contents of the ballots, as well as poorly printed ballots that are nearly unreadable to voters.
