ELECTIONS in Northern Mindanao and in Caraga region were “very peaceful” and “no election-related” incident recorded during the election day, the 4th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army said in a statement released yesterday.

Capt. Regie H. Go of the Division Public Affairs Office (DPAO) said more than 6,000 troops successfully secured the voters and the polling centers which resulted in holding of the orderly and peaceful national and local elections.

Unabia team, Sabio win in Gingoog, Tagoloan elections

SAN Francisco, Agusan del Sur--The entire slate of Gov. Adolph Edward Plaza in Agusan del Sur overwhelmed the rival camp of his estranged siblings, Rep. Maria Valentina Plaza and Democrito Plaza III in the May 13 polls.

Except in Rosario town, Plaza’s bets in the provincial and municipal levels who are mostly incumbents, handily won in the 13 towns and Bayugan City which observers see the governor crumbled down their own well-entrenched family dynasty to build his own political empire.

Based on GMA News Online Election 2019 results with 98 percent election returns processed , incumbent provincial board member Santiago Cane Jr. received a commanding lead of 147,686 votes against Maria Valentina Plaza’s 106,879 votes. Lawyer Hilarion Clapis trailed far behind with 32,460 votes.

Marawi IDP: I voted for those who deserve my vote MARAWI CITY -- Residents of the most affected area (MAA) here aspire for more business opportunities after the election.

Omaisa Benito Laguindab, a former resident of Barangay Lumbaca Madaya whose family is currently sheltered at Area 6 Biyaya ng Pagbabago Transitional Site in Barangay Sagonsongan, expects a new set of elected officials who will work to boost the Marawi economy and improve livelihood ventures for displaced families in the war-torn city.

“We went here early so we could vote for those who we believe could protect us and help us rebuild Marawi,” Laguindab stated.

Laguindab hopes that elected officials will provide comfortable living to every resident of MAA saying, “we

want to change and we want the winning candidates to provide for what the IDPs lack.”

Marawi residents have already selected candidates whom they think deserve their votes.

“I voted for those who deserve my vote. We are voting wisely here,” Laguidab exerted.

Provincial Manager Leo Damole said even with the meager production of the said commodity in the province, they continuously provide support to the farmers through the regular conduct of Ugnayan.

Currently, NFA buys Palay for up to P20.70 taking into consideration the parameters for moisture content and purity.

Midterm National and Local Election in JTF Central’s Joint Area of Operations generally peaceful CAMP SIONGCO, Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao -- The midterm national and local election in the provinces of Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, 11 municipalities in North Cotabato, and 5 municipalities in the coastal areas of Lanao del Sur were generally peaceful.

The positive result is attributed to the close coordination, meetings, conferences and syn-

chronized efforts between the security forces and the COMELEC together with other concerned stakeholders to ensure that there will be no election failure.

Reported minor election related incidents in the entire area were isolated and was properly addressed by our security forces and further investigations are still ongoing.

Meanwhile, the reported consolidation of MILF members at different ar-

eas in Cotabato City was monitored and properly endorsed to GPH-MILF CCCH. Said MILF members were later sent back to Camp Darapanan, Sultan Kudarat in accordance with the guidelines on the mutual understanding between the coordinating committee on the cessation of hostilities for ceasefire related functions during the May 13, 2019 National and Local Elections.

malfunctioning VRVMs were reported, all election paraphernalia was delivered safely and secured.

Troops of Joint Task Force Central were deployed 3 days prior to election in all polling centers to provide security and assistance to the election committee and to the electroplates.

In the morning of election day, BIFF members were encountered by JTF Central troopers that ensued a 10-minute exchange of fires in Brgy Lower Meta, Datu Unsay, Maguindanao.

Pimentel calls for Senate probe into faulty VCMs

Senator Aquilino Pimentel III on Tuesday called for a congressional inquiry into reported vote counting machine (VCM) glitches that caused delays during Monday’s mid-term polls.

Pimentel, chair of the Senate committee on electoral reforms and people’s participation, questioned the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for lacking foresight on the massive malfunctioning of VCMs in several precincts nationwide.

“Glitches are enough to call for a congressional investigation. Why are we still having theses glitches?

Can’t Comelec anticipate them?” Pimentel told reporters in a text message.

Smartmatic International has been providing the VCMs used in the past three automated elections -- 2010, 2013 and 2016.

James Jimenez said the numb er of VCMs that malfunctioned in Monday’s polls is still “within range”.

Jimenez noted that they will analyze all the different failures encountered as far as the machines are concerned.

“What we see right now is 400 to 600 machines and instances it could go higher. I don’t know yet but so far that’s all that has been reported to me.

That is a small figure out of 85,000 VCMs. S o it seems to me it’s still within the range,” he said in a press briefing at the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC) headquarters at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

At the same time, the poll body official is not discounting the possibility that the reason why some machines did not function is because these are no longer brand new as they were first used in the 2016 polls. A report culled from the Philippine News Agency

A new era for Tagoloan

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina-- A new dawn has emerged over the horizon of my hometown of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental as its residents voted for change when they elected a new mayor and rejected its entrenched politican clan the Emanos.

It’s quite unbelievable for long time Tagoloanons like myself but as the canvassers worked overtime to finish the tabulation of votes it’s beginning to look like a victory for Gomer “Enan” Sabio.

With a lead of less than

a thousand votes, “Kakap” as Mayor-elect Enan Sabio is known had been declared winner and his supporters as well as residents of Tagoloan cheered for him and for an end to nearly four decades of iron-fisted rule by the Emano clan.

When the municipal hall was under the Emanos, its rule was divided among brothers and nephews with the cousin, outgoing mayor Hickert Emano, as the last family member to hold power.

Hickert, first cousin of

incumbent Governor Yevgeny “Bambi” Emano—who as of this writing is headed for a win over former mayor and congressman Julio Uy— will become the only Emano who lasted for only one term of three years.

Mayor-elect Enan Sabio is the son of the late Aristotles “Teling” Sabio and the grandson of Iya Kikay, matriarch of the SabioValdehueza families.

Kakap is the incumbent chairman of Barangay Natumolan and served the village for years without

collecting his honoraria, using the money instead to help his constituents.

Kakap is credited with solving Natumolan’s garbage problem by forging an alliance with Mayor Juliette Uy. Now that I’ve written my introduction for Kakap, I wish to go direct to the See NEW, page 11

The war against corruption continues

THE skirmishes in the political battlefield ceased.

When the smoke is gone, the victors would emerge albeit wounded but never out fought. The losers would go home with heads vow and dropped shoulders.

Some are teary-eyed while asking “why” and “what happened?”

Like in real battles, the protagonists must be equipped with the necessary logistics before going

to the battle field. It means that the armory of the protagonists must be loaded with all kinds of firearms.

It is also understood that the firearms are designed for covert and overt operations. The lack of logistics would certainly affect the effectiveness and efficiency of the men at war.

In an election, the right of suffrage guaranteed in a democratic institution, is an exercise of plurality that

bespeaks of the individual’s right to elect their leaders.

During the election, the candidates are given the chance to present themselves in public during the campaign period. It is during the campaign period that the people scrutinize the capability, credibility, and integrity of the candidates.

Integrity is one of the enduring factors that provides the candidate an invincible weapon.

A Deeper View

Democracy’s loss

VOTED in Monday’s election the eight Otso Diretso senatorial candidates, and I am not going to apologize for it, because I want to help strengthen democracy in our country.

Having a strong opposition, especially in the Senate, is what will make democracy work for it is the job and duty of the other co-equal branch, in this case the Senate, to perform check and balance on the Executive branch.

With the touted pro-administration super majority

in the Senate, kiss goodbye to check and balance and democracy. The biggest victim then in last Monday’s election are not those who voted for a strong democracy but democracy itself.

Who is going to stand up against the excesses and abuses of the sitting administration now? We certainly can’t expect the ever subservient House of Representatives to have the courage and the balls to do this.

That body could not even exercise independence in the

election of their Speaker so we cannot expect that body to be brave and courageous enough to stand up against the excesses and abuses of the sitting administration? No way will this ever happen.

Because of what the Lower House could not do that the framers of the constitution, 1935 and 1987, thought of creating a 24man Senate to be elected nationally to ensure that there will always be a body who will be brave and courageous enough to stand up

Election day blues ELECTION is always the day of reckoning for candidates. They cross their fingers and hope for the best. On the other hand, the voters are estatic. They get to exercise their so-called sovereign rights ( whatever that means to them.)

But bottom line: we all get the kind of leaders we all deserve ( according to the eminent Thomas Jefferson.)

Meaning, don’t blame others if we collectibly choose the wrong leaders today. *** NO FUN— I was a candidate myself , for the first time in 1987 , some 32 years

ago and it’s no fun! Don’t ever think campaigning and getting votes are easy.

It’s not!

But looking back, what candidates — and voters — have to deal with today have not changed much!! *** IT’S “PERSONAL” — Getting votes, especially in local politics is all personal. I used to do house to house (even “bedroom to bedroom”) handshaking and patting —not petting !! — to get votes . Up the front door then out at the kitchen.

I did not have the means

to do big rallies, so we would carry a small portable “karaoke” and stopped at every “tuba” and beer store where ordinary folks gathered . Of course, the inevitable “one shot” should not be declined everytime someone would offer. Just be sure you dont get drunk early. And yes a few bottles or glasses of free drinks “on me” did the trick. Less cost compared to ads on TV and the tabloids.

I remember giving myself a daily target qouta of at least 1,000 handshakes before calling it a day. *** “UTANG NA LOOB”

— Let’s admit it:” utang na loob” is a big factor. Never mind one’s qualifications.

It can be past favors or giving cash doleouts. Better being “approachable” or “maka masa” ( and not the elite-looking). Bottom-line for the voting “masa” is for them to feel you are “one of them”. *** See BLUES, page 11

Reaping the Success of K-12 Curriculum

The ever-changing needs of the labor markets in consonance with the so called globalization is putting much pressure on education systems to produce bettertrained graduates. Hence, President Benigno C. Aquino III signed Republic Act No. 10533 commonly known as Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 which made K-12 a law. Its primordial purpose is to provide quality education experience, full of opportunities for intellectual, physical, creative and social development.

The new curriculum does not merely add two more years to the existing 14-year of education but also to prepare high school graduates for tertiary learning, to be ready to join the global workforce and to be competitive in the global job market.

This likewise offers a faster way to earn Certificates of Competencies (COCs) and National Certificates (NCs) from TESDA that one can use to apply for both local and overseas jobs that require a

particular set of skills.

Even before the implementation, a lot of issues, questions and problems arose.

A teacher once commented that it is like a ship sailing in a vast and uncertain ocean.

However, with the earnest perseverance and innovative thinking of the school administrators and teachers, it reached the harbor of great success. As a concrete example, Judel Celis, one of the top five (5) students of the Electrical and Installation Maintenance in Laguindingan Senior High School, is now working as Electrical Maintenance at Legaspi Import & Export Corporation and Group of Companies. To date, the wide implementation of the new curriculum within the Division of Misamis Oriental has already reached its full realization. Kudos!

This K to 12 curriculum in the Philippines will put Filipino students at par with the rest of the world. Truly, investing in education is the key toward reaching long term economic growth rates.

To be a leader of technology requires a willingness to learn, flexibility, and the capacity to accept change as a constant factor. Adaptability and acceptance of ambiguity are essential. Because technology changes continuously, there is no menu of technology must dos and must haves. Admin bets’ win an affirmation of people’s support, says Duterte DAVAO CITY -- President Rodrigo R. Duterte sees the success of pro-administration senatorial candidates in the elections as an indication of the people’s support to his leadership.

Based on the city Comelec data, 387 out 401 clustered precincts were already counted by the Board of Canvassers. In fact, Comelec has announced that the winners in the local elections are expected to be proclaimed today, May 14.

The Comelec’s partial unofficial data showed incumbent mayor Moreno leading in the mayoralty race with his 153,708 total votes casted while his closest rival, Pompee Laviña only had 87,390 total votes.

In the vice mayoralty race, Vice Mayor Uy also got 137,701 votes while his opponent Nadya Emano Elipe only had 97,657 votes.

For the congressional seat, Rep. Uy of the 1st District is also likely to get re-elected as he was also leading against Padayon’s bet Ian Acenas.

Rodriguez from the Padayon-CDP coalition of the second district is likely to reclaim his position as Representative of the 2nd District . He is leading in the ongoing counting of votes as compared to his Team OKKA rival Alam Lim.

Cañosa, the three-termer vice mayor who termed out in 2016, got 35,969 votes as of 1:53 p.m. with 99 percent of votes accounted for versus the elder Guingona’s 30,029 votes.

Cañosa, who previously lost in the 2016 mayoral race, ran under Unabia’s PDP-Laban fold and clinched victory against the Guingonas who had dominated Gingoog City for almost two decades.

Guingona’s daughter Stella Marie also lost to Unabia who has never been defeated since his reign as Misamis Oriental Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) member in the past before rising to become a threetermer congressman.

Stella Marie, a secondtermer mayor, decided to switch position to accommodate her mother’s aim to become mayor again after terming out in 2013.

The Unabia team was considered underdogs in Gingoog City with odds in favor of the Guingonas who are incumbents in both the mayoral and vice mayoral posts.

Unabia himself is considered an outsider in the city, having resided there only

in 2018.

Unabia’s son Christian also pulled off a congressional victory in the first district of the province – the post that is being vacated by his father – against outgoing Vice Gov. Jose Mari Pelaez.

In Tagoloan town, Natumulan barangay chairman Gomer Ferdinand Sabio became the first elected mayor there since 1980 who is not an Emano.

Incidentally, another Sabio – Robinson – became mayor there for five months in 2016 when the then Mayor Paulino Emano died in office. But Robinson Sabio wasn’t elected as mayor. He assumed office by way of succession.

Gomer Ferdinand “Enan” Sabio’s stunning rise to Tagoloan’s top post is considered a breakthrough considering that four Emanos have become successive mayors there.

Vicente Emano became mayor there in 1980 to 1983.

He was succeeded by his brother Paulino who held the post for the next 15 years up to 1988. Vicente’s son Yevgeny Vincente Emano became mayor from 1988 until his terms expired in 2007. Uncle Paulino then made a successful comeback, holding on to the post until his death in 2016. During the 2016 elections, Misamis Oriental SP member Heckert Hernando Jude Emano chose not to seek reelection to run and win as mayor there.

Election-related violence down by 60%, says PNP

INCIDENTS of electionrelated violence this year declined by 60 percent as compared to the last elections, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Tuesday.

PNP chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde said a total of 43 incidents with 73 victims were recorded this year, as compared to the 106 incidents with 192 victims during the 2016 elections.

Power grid operations back to normal -NGCP

MANILA – The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said transmission lines and facilities nationwide are back to normal operations as of 5 a.m. Tuesday after an outage in a Visayas substation late Monday afternoon.

The issue at the Daanbantayan Substation was caused by the outage of two transformers that are serving the areas being

serviced by the Cebu II Electric Cooperative Inc. (CEBECO II).

In an advis or y, the NGCP said the facility was re-energized by 2:30 a.m.

Tuesday, thus, all transmission lines and facilities around the country are now operating normally.

Relatively, the Department of Energy (DOE) said Unit 1 of the Team Energy Corporation (TEC) power plant in Pagbilao, Quezon is expected to go back online

Tueday, May 14, after its forced outage last May 2 due to excessive water leak at feed water flow sensing line.

Also, the Unit 1 of GNPower Mariveles Coal Plant Ltd. Co. (GMPC) in Bataan, which was affected by high turbine vibration, is expected to be resolved as early as May 15, DOE said.

Also, the Energy Department said eight power plants that are currently on de-rated capacity, with the

hydroelectric power plants on reduced capacity due to low water levels .

Units 1-4 of SNAP’s Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant are producing 70 MW instead of 380 MW and its Ambuklao Hydroelectric Power Plant units 1-3 are only producing 70 MW

instead of 105 MW. PH tourist arrivals up by 7.59% in Q1 2019

MANILA -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) reported a 7.59 percent increase in tourist arrivals to the Philippines in the first quarter of 2019, indicating that the country’s tourism “is on the right track.”

According to figures released by the DOT on Thursday, around 2,204,564 foreign visitors arrived in the country from January to March 2019, reflecting a 7.59 percent rise from 2,049,094 over the same period last year.

“The DOT is working on enhancing our tourism products and tourism infrastructure to entice tourists to choose the Philippines as their next destination,” DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat said.

South Korea remains the top source market with 519,584 tourist arrivals compared to last year’s 477,087.

The period also saw the Chinese market ranking second with 463,804 tourists, 24.87 percent higher than the previous year’s tally of 371,429. In third spot is the United States, registering 293,780 visitors, up by 3.10 percent from last year.

Taiwanese visitors posted the highest percentage increase which grew to 77,908 from 59,877 in 2018 or 30.11 percent higher than last year.

Completing the top 12 markets for the three-month period are: Japan, 177,769; Taiwan, 77,908; Australia, 73,147; Canada, 72,352; United Kingdom, 53,402; Singapore, 39,484; Malaysia, 37,651; India, 36,275; and Germany, 33,725.

Over 7% GDP possible in Q1 if budget approved on time: DOF

MANILA -- The Philippine economy would have expanded by 7.2 percent instead of 5.6 percent in the first quarter of 2019 if the approval of the proposed 2019 national budget was not delayed.

This was stressed by Finance Undersecretary Gil Beltran following the below-projected output of the domestic economy in the first three months of the year.

In an economic bulletin, Beltran said growth, as measured by gross domestic product (GDP) would not have fallen below year-ago’s 6.5 percent and quarter-ago’s 6.3 percent if government spending programmed for the first quarter of the year was met.

He said government expenditure declined by 0.08 percent in nominal terms compared to its 25.4 percent rise same period last year.

The government operated on a re-enacted budget until this year’s budget was signed into law last April.

More oil companies to cut gasoline, kerosene prices

MANILA – Local oil giant Petron Corp. along with Thailand-based PTT Philippines, are set to follow suit with a substantial cut in the price of gasoline that was initiated by more aggressive oil firms over the weekend.

In separate advisories, both companies said they too would roll back the price of their gasoline products

by PHP1.25 per liter, ef-

fective 6 a.m. on Tuesday (May 14).

Petron also announced a PHP0.30 per liter reduction in kerosene.

Seaoil was the first to make a move this week, cutting the price of gasoline

by PHP1.25 per liter and kerosene by PHP0.30 per liter effective 12:01 a.m. on Sunday.

Petrogazz quickly followed with the same price adjustment PHP1.25 per

liter effective 6 a.m. Monday.

Other companies are expected to announce similar price adjustments within the day or implement their own rollbacks without fanfare.

There will be no change in the price of diesel this week.

Oil executives said these changes are in line with the downward trend in the price of oil in the international market. (PNA)

The D OF executive traced the lower growth of capital formation to the decline in public construction by 8.6 percent against the 22.6 percent growth from January to March 2018.

He, however, noted that the lower growth of capital formation was “slightly tempered by 8.6 percent growth in private construction compared to the 8.1 percent in the same quarter of 2018.”

Meanwhile, the impact of the El Niño phenomenon was noticed in the slower growth of the agriculture sector at 0.8 percent from year-ago’s 1.1 percent and quarter-ago’s 1.8 percent.

These factors hampered the growth of the economy but major factor is the delay in the budget approval, he said.

“If the budget was approved as scheduled and disbursements were made promptly, GDP growth in the first quarter would have risen by 7.2 percent,” he added.

Meanwhile, IHS Markit Asia Pacific Chief Economist Rajiv Biswas expects better output for the Philippine economy in the next quarters since this year’s national budget has been signed into law.

He said that since the national government is now in place the government can now spend according to plan.

“Overall GDP growth for calendar 2019 is expected to be 6.1 percent year-on-year, moderating only slightly from the 6.2 percent pace recorded in 2018,” he added.

Germany nudged India to 13th place, with a total of 10,086, up slightly with a 1.52 percent increase visa-vis 9,935 of last year.

Meanwhile, visiting Philippine passport-holders permanently residing abroad (not including overseas Filipino workers), otherwise known as “balikbayans,” totaled 14,610 as of March.

Puyat attributed the growth in numbers of visitors to the rehabilitated Boracay Island, touted as a model of sustainable tourism development, as it continues to attract tourists since its reopening in October last year.

nectivity for the upward trend in tourist arrivals to the country.

In her recent speech, Puyat said the DOT remains committed with its objective to establish the Philippines as a “quality destination” in the region.

“For that, we need to be able to prioritize the following: adequate infrastructure, ease in travel facilitation, safety and security and developed tourism areas,” she said.

“To ensure that we get these done, the DOT is implementing a convergence approach where the Department works in partnership with other national government agencies,” she added.

My apologies to the mayor-elect for this, since I know that he will go down in history as the man who defeated a political dynasty in Tagoloan. But these problems need resolution immediately.

Firstly, I congratulate the Tagoloanons for waking up from their four-decade apathy and indifference to the Emano dynasty’s draconian grip over Tagoloan Municipal Hall.

Politics being toxic in my hometown due to the Emanos causing dissension among families and friends, I’ve not set foot in the municipal hall for years without feeling some goosebumps.

Being an elected official—either mayor, governor, legislator or president—means you are not an official for a select few but a public official for all. And among the first tasks of an elected official upon assuming office is to identify and resolve the biggest problems facing your constituents and forging a united front from all stakeholders.

The problems facing Tagoloan as far as I can see are the following: 1. Water supply: This is such a basic service that it need not be set aside and overlooked. If need be the Tagoloan municipal government should review the contract with Mactan Rock to see why the water fees are exorbitant and yet the service is lousy. Why the outgoing mayor failed to resolve this with all his power at his disposal is beyond me.

There is an existing Tagoloanon Water Works company and what had it done to resolve the water supply and distribution problem? Nothing and the outgoing administration is precisely that, zero accomplishments. Was there a loan contracted by the local government? Please review.

2. Waste disposal--Garbage disposal in Tagoloan became a political issue no thanks to outgoing mayor Hickert Emano resenting the arrangement made between Sabio and Uy to resolve Na-

At the height of the Emano’s iron rule in Tagoloan, the younger Emano made sure that only those allied or supporters of the purple/violet Emano clan can dispose of garbage on the makeshift dump site which is actually a dump truck at the back of the public market. I need not remind Tagoloanons and anyone who passed by the municipal hall that the trees there don’t bear fruit but cellophane wrappers.

3. Infrastructure: I refer to, among many other things, the road near the backyard of my house in El Mundo which remains dusty and crater-like rocky.

My family and I along with residents there had long given up hope for its repair and had implored Divine Intervention to address this.

Maybe Sabio was God’s answer to our prayers, I can only pray it to be so.

To say it’s a private road is pure BS because even high school dropouts know the government’s power of expropriation upon payment of just compensation. Also, exacerbating the problem is the use of the road by big trucks owned by businesses there.

These are just some of the problems in Tagoloan that the incoming mayor should solve immediately.

In the meantime, Mayorelect Sabio can savor his victory over outgoing mayor Hickert as he ended the four-decade rule of the Emano clan over Tagoloan.

I’m not saying that the Emanos didn’t do anything for Tagoloan but their rule is marked by patronage politics. If they did serve their mandate Tagoloan could have become more than what it is now.

In the field of public service, integrity is equal to surviving the eccentricity of the voting populace. When the candidate’s integrity became questionable, it also means losing the public trust. In fact, the chances of winning by a candidate whose integrity is marred with controversy – both in public in private life - is nil.

Howe ve r, t i m e h a s changed. Sixty years after the war, the traditional standard of measuring the integrity of the candidate has also perished along with the passing of the time.

Unfortunately, this observation has taken place in the Philippines.

Since the rivalry of political parties reached feverpitched in the 70s, the three “Gs:” Guns, goons, and gold became the ultimate standard in measuring the value of the winning candidate.

Having all the three “Gs” at the politician’s beck and call, the result of any electoral exercise is already predestined.

While the government has instituted measures to curtail the proliferation of guns during the election period, the politician’s private armed groups remain visible in many parts of the country.

In fact, the slaughter of some members of the press and the innocent civilians in Maguindanao in 2009, was carried out by the armed goons of known politicians in Mindanao.

Had it not for the government’s relentless drive to rid of political armed goons, all elections in the country would turn into a bloody conflict among the supporters, leaders, and the politicians.

While “guns and goons” have been neutralized, the remaining “G” or “gold” still remains. In fact, “gold” now predetermines the possible winner of any electoral exercise in the country today.

Undoubtedly, those who are in power have access to “gold” and the necessary logistics during the election period. By the way, the word “gold” here means money.

In other words, the set of values that the people of the past have set as the criteria in the selection of candidates no longer applies in recent time. The latest election has proven the observation that the voters are no longer interested about the candidates’ tarnish image.

The issue of corruption, of concubinage and other immorality are no longer important to the voting public. The system of wickedness where “money” dictates the conscience of the voters already become the standard measure of winning a public post.

Everywhere, be it among the members of the family, the story about being “bribed” by politicians became a household menu during the election period.

It is unfortunate that we have lost our sense of pride as individuals. It is lamentable that the debased system has devoured the family value of uprightness and honesty.

No doubt, we deserved a system of crooked, of corrupt public officials pretending to be immaculate. While the government struggles in the fight against all forms of inanity, the people themselves encouraged the proliferation of the pervert system.

However, amid the frustrations and intolerance, there are still well-meaning individuals who remain unsullied. Hats off to the men and women who fight corruption and immorality in the community.

While driving the dark forces of evil is an uphill battle, the compelling reason to push the struggle is inevitable.

The fight against corruption, dishonesty and

all forms of social inequity must continue. Otherwise, when nobody stands against the wicked anymore, the tradition of honesty and integrity will forever be lost.

Before anything else, the CYNOSURE congratulates the deserving winners of the midterm election this year.

Can you expect the likes of Christopher Go, Ronald dela Rosa, Francis Tolentino, Pia Cayetano, Imee Marcos, Cynthia Villar, Lito Lapid, Sonny Angara, Bong Revilla, Nancy Binay and JV Ejercito, among the newly elected and re-elected senators to be brave and courageous enough to stand up to Malacanang? Don’t kid me.

Compounding the situation is the fact that these 2019 midterm electionminted senators are joining in the Senate senators like Richard Gordon, Miguel Zubiri, Win Gatchalian, Joel Villanueva, Manny Pacquiao and Vicente Sotto III who have consistently been loyal to the sitting president since 2016.

How will democracy thrive given this configuration of the Senate come June 30, 2019? Everything will then be according to the wishes of Malacanang.

This lack of check and balance displayed by the Senate since the ascension of Gloria Arroyo to the presidency in 2001 must be the reason why people have lost hope even of the Senate.

After casting my vote Monday at about 2 PM, we went to a mall for halo-halo.

I surprisingly observed that about 80 percent of the mall goers did not have the indelible ink mark on their fingers. This observation led me to conclude the people just don’t care anymore.

We have lost our sense of patriotism, love of country, since senators just kept on kowtowing to Malacanang instead of playing the role of fiscalizers.

This is worrisome. *** THE PRESS — There ‘s now a-brewing in the media circles on this issue about alleged violations of press freedom by those in government. For instance, some media persons protest being banned by Malacanang to cover events. And some media groups are now going to the courts over alleged violations of press freedom.

Ultimately, the courts will have to make that judgment call whether press freedom is indeed abridged or not by those rules. So let’s leave these to the Courts to work on. *** FOURTH ESTATE —It’s an interesting issue worth watching since it will somehow define media’s role as the so-called FOURTH ESTATE. This postulates that while government has THREE independent branches (executive, legislative & judiciary) that are co- equal and independent from each other, the press is mythically the FOURTH branch as it is supposed to operate independently and without interference from government, but subject only to existing and prevailing laws.

Let’s watch how this will spin further and ultimately end.
