AGAYAN de Oro City - Rotary International president’s representative Muhammad Faiz Kidwai heaped praises on RI District 3870 during the first day of their Discon 2018 yesterday at Limketkai Atrium, this city.
Kidwai congratulated R I D i st r i c t 3 8 7 0 and its leadership after Governor Rosalinda Deleste announced that the District had surpassed the US$200,000 mark in contributions to the Rotary Foundation. "Ms. Deleste is perhaps one of the best governors of the Rotary International today. Her achievements speak for themselves," Kidwai remarked before an audience of 600 comprising officers and selected members of the 46 clubs Rotary International District 3870 Discon 2018 opening at the Atrium of Limketkai Center. Strengthening school governing councils by Lea May Caburatan
“Ano nga ba ang isang matatag na School Governing Council (What is a stable SGC)?” asked Synergeia Foundation chief executive officer Dr Milwida “Nene” M Guevara during a third-level workshop on SGC development, held on April 27 in Cagayan de Oro City. The workshop, called “Building Communities that will Make Education Work,” was part of a series initiated by the Synergeia Foundation in line with the Education Governance Effectiveness (EdGE) project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The event was participated by representatives from the city local government unit and the Department of Education (DepEd) - Division of Cagayan de Oro City, parents, barangay officials, school heads, district supervisors, and teachers from districts Central I, East I, East II, North I, North II District, South, Southwest, West I, and West II. The workshop centered on how the participants could strengthen their respective SGCs through translating their goals into tasks and by learning the concept of metrics and performance indicators. They were also guided

Evacuation center to rise in Tablon Cagayan de Oro soon to have a geo-hazards free evacuation center. The 18th City Council during its 82nd regular session presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy, enacted an ordinance authorizing the City Mayor to enter into and sign the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) covering the construction of an Evacuation Center in Barangay Tablon. Considered as a flood and landslide prone area, Cagayan de Oro City is the recipient of the OCD project that will address immediate and quick response
to multiple hazards such as earthquakes, typhoons, floods, volcanic eruptions, and landslides. The construction of the Evacuation Center will be funded by the National Government in the amount of P35,460,000 which will be released upon completion of the necessary requirements for the project. Under the MOA, the OCD regional office shall oversee the implementation of the project and take appropriate measures to ensure that the fund transferred to DPWH is used for the intended purpose. IN poverty-stricken countries today, girls’ education needs to be addressed more seriously than it currently is. One person who is making a difference on this front is Malala Yousafzai. At 13 years old, Yousafzai was shot in the head in her native Pakistan by the Taliban for her advocacy of girls’ education in her village. Now at 20 years old, she created her own campaign against restricting education rights for women and is attending university. One of Yousafzai’s initiatives for improving and expanding girls’ education was her Girl Power Trip. Activism for girls’ education is prominent in other
terms of implementation, I’m just [setting] a direction, you are the ones that will make it happen. Kayo [You all] will be the ones who will bring us to reality,” Moreno added. Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan has been working together with Synergeia Foundation to improve access to quality education and livelihood skills in areas afflicted by conflict and poverty, particularly in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Personal benefits that result from gaining an education include a raised social status and an increased sense of self worth and confidence.

M A L AY B A L AY C i t y, Bukidnon--There was a biting bedlam over social media when Malacanang announced in an instant that President Duterte’s another ‘first lady’, Agriculture Undersecretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat would serve as the next Tourism Secretary vice the embattled sister of the Tulfo brothers, Wanda Tulfo-Teo. Not even the mainstream media has not been spared by that media hype brewed by the 60 million peso ads campaign that went overboard – right into the pocket of a TV blocktimer, the Bitag PR outfit of the Tulfo brothers. Wanda Tulfo-Teo quickly resigned from her post as Tourism secretary out of delicadeza and to spare everyone further pain, in-
cluding President Duterte. This is a shallow proposition, or even a cheap scapegoat coming from a die-hard supporter of the President. In fact, with this trash statement, no one would ever pay attention to Teo, not even the lowly man on the street, nor the displaced workers of Boracay. However, Teo’s camp was quick in the draw saying the former secretary still enjoys trust and confidence of the President. Teo was not asked to resign by the President, she tendered her resignation out of delicadeza. Well said, but it lacks proper decorum and plain logic and therefore there was no need for her to stay even a little bit longer, not out of sheer delicadeza, but going
out of public service was the most honorable thing to do. Earlier, critics raised the issue of conflict of interest against Teo after the Commission on Audit flagged payments amounting to P60 million made to broadcaster Ben Tulfo’s Bitag Media Unlimited Inc. (BMU) for Department of Tourism (DOT) advertisements to be aired on his “Kilos Pronto” program on PTV. Teo had denied that she had a hand in the PTV’s decision to place the DOT’s advertisements on her brother’s program and said that the project went through a bidding process and was reviewed by her department’s legal department. million, not as an admission of guilt as critics say, but to protect the family’s name and to show that they do not wish to benefit from public funds. Thanks, but no thanks to the Tulfo brothers. Galvanize Halal Advocacy: Seize a Slice of USD 580 billion?
Online statistics varies as to quantifying the Global Halal Consumer Market’s worth in terms of US dollars. One estimates it at more than 580 billion dollars today or two more years from now while another projects it to rocket up to $2.6 trillion dollars by 2020! Government economic interest is understandably to seize that slice of the more than 500 billion dollars worth Global Halal pie. On the other hand, local Muslims stakeholders’ interest is to fill the need for faithinspired Halal consumerism market with full involvement of local Ulama such as the Darul Iftah Council as a non-government agency with a substantive right to invoke separation of State and Church constitutional limitation. On the expediency of
technical aspects of Halal, yes, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) should be in charge but in the aspect of ensuring Shariah compliance, the authority rests intrinsically upon the Ulama and Darul Iftah Council. This is utterly relevant if our government – as the only Catholic dominated nation in Asia – is truly serious in improving its Halal credibility amongst Muslim nations of the world and its capacity to meet or fulfill Halal global demand not only in export. I concur with Atty. Mehol Sadain, former secretary at the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) that “the government thrust in giving the chairmanship to DTI on account mainly
of the export facet of the venture is self-defeating. How will Muslim countries react to a Halal accreditation Board whose Muslim composition is not even assured?” Indeed, it is imperative for all multi-stakeholdersMuslim or not- to proactively support the government to solve problems as they arise, and to advocate for a genuine reform agenda to make our halal industry globally competitive. Three major challenging Halal issues were commonly shared by government lead agencies, local business entrepreneurs, including an international Halal Certifier CEO based in Dubai last March 23, 2018 during the event organized by the Mindanao Islamic Chamber of Commerce Inc, (MICCI), DOT and DTI dubbed “Ha-
lal Business Opportunities in Trade & Tourism Forum” held at the Ballroom of Marco Polo Hotel, Davao City. The Philippines as the only Catholic-dominated country in Asia is bent on competing to seize a slice of the Global Halal Market pie but sad to say World Halal Conferences, Summits, Fora in the offing ultimately winded up cancelled or withdrawn due to our lack of capacity to provide Halal foods and services; and that we do not have Halal Credibility based on International Halal Market Perception.
