Duterte to implement simplified auditing rules
MANILA - President Rodrigo R. Duterte said he wants to meet with the Office of the Ombudsman (OMB) and Commission on Audit (COA) to discuss a proposal to craft simplified auditing rules to attain effective and efficient delivery of public services. “I’d like to sit with the Executive Secretary (Salvador Medialdea) and maybe invite some guys from the Ombudsman and itong (this) auditing office. And let’s agree on certain procedures,” Duterte said in his speech during the first anniversary of the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) in Malacañang on Wednesday night. Duterte noticed that throughout his long experience as mayor of Davao city, stricter regulations tend to waste time and money of government offices. “I do not really see the rationale of these requirements. But some stupid enterprising guys would just come up and to make money,” he said. Lanao Norte town gets free S&T services from DOST By HICELYN F. PANTORILLA
LANAO DEL NORTE -More than 200 students and barangay officials participated in the first leg of Science and Technology (S&T) Caravan of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 10 held at the municipality of Linamon, Lanao del Norte. Free Water Testing, Free Weighing Scale Calibration and Free Robotics Class were some of the highlights of the caravan. A total of 17 samples were tested from the different water sources of Linamon town to identify the pH level, color and turbidity during its conduct of Free Water Testing. “More or less 2,000 residents in our barangay use the only source of water which is the water spring. We use this in all our daily needs like cooking, drinking, laundry and more. That is why we are here to test the sample of our water to know if this is good to use or not,” said Ms. Jenelyn Escalante, Barangay Kawagad of Purakan, Linamon. Health centers here also brought in their weighing scale for free calibration. A total of 62 baby hangingweighing scales from health centers in Linamon were calibrated by the DOST 10 as part of Free Weighing Scale Calibration. According to DOST-10 Information Officer Julie Anne H. Baculio, the calibration of weighing scales is a process of ensuring and maintaining the accuracy of weighing instrument in alignment with a standard or acceptable range of results. Another highlight of S&T Caravan was the Free Robotics Class for grade students to encourage increased enrollment in the field of Engineering and Information Technology. MARAWI CITY -- The USPhilippines Society (USPS) recently visited Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF) project sites here to witness the turnover of brand new medical equipment for a soon-toopen rural health center in Barangay Sagonsongan. Built by Makati Medical Center Foundation (MMCF) with the support of The Solid Group and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Sagonsongan’s rural health center is designed to serve the physical and psycho-social health needs of about 3,000 internally displaced families. ‘Bantay Asin’ task force readies for salt monitoring in CDO CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The Regional Bantay Asin Task Force (RBATF) Northern Mindanao has set schedule for salt monitoring in Cagayan de Oro City’s (CDO) manufacturing areas, sea port and major public markets this year. This, after results of previous monitoring in the five provinces of Northern Mindanao showed that a number of retails stores are still selling non-iodized salt or inadequately iodized salt. During the first semester meeting of RBATF, March 5 in Cagayan de Oro City, Liwayway S. Llorico, Nutrition Officer II of National Nutrition Council (NNC) region 10 shared for iodized salt to be adequate for household consumption, iodine content must not be less than 15 parts per million (ppm).

People say “this might be the fate that God has given me, and I cannot escape from it” or “because I came from this kind of family then I forever am like this” it is sad but absolutely true. There’s nothing wrong if these would be our sentiments what makes them bad is when we are trying to deny our situation. We tend to forget about it and never include them in most of our conversations with friends. It is a big “NO”, instead of denying this reality why not accepting them and starts to think of a solution that may answer the questions running in our mind, and start learning new insights from people who shared the same experiences with us and become successful in their own ways. According to some successful personalities, if we wanted to become fit and healthy hang out with people who are engag-

Why I am telling you this? Not to become another person, but to become the person that God designed us to be. Don’t say that you are not successful because you don’t have the wealth, the luxury in the world, big businesses, outstanding careers, good looks, and one of a kind mansion to live in. Mind you, these things will not last; they seemed to, but not. Don’t believe that to be successful is to have these things. Why rich people still commit suicides? Why wealthy people still wanted to have more? Why wealthy politicians are still involved in corruption? Why people who are gifted with good looks still wanted to become more than what they are at present and
don’t have good relationship with their family members? Why? Because success is not the fame, the glory and the greatness we have, it’s in the long, lasting and real happiness and fullness of our hearts in everything we do, with God. Go on; explore the world if that’s what gives you happiness. Do the things that your heart dictates and not what other people are telling you to be. It is really hard to be happy if it’s against your heart. Let your happiness shine and start making your own life. Don’t let what others are saying defines who you are. Don’t let people control and manipulate you. If it is, then it would be the saddest part of your life. Even God don’t control us, He gave us free will. Be a happy person whatever it takes. Because to be successful is to be happy full of love living together with the people you love and loved you. Happiness is a choice. In every step of the way choose to be happy and success is with you.

Cleanergy facility in Benguet reaches 1m safe man hours
THE 19-MW La Trinidad Hydro power plant, under construction by AboitizPower, has recently reached one million safe man hours without lost time incident since it broke ground in 2017. The facility, set to be completed in 2019, is part of AboitizPower’s Cleanergy portfolio, its renewable energy brand which also includes geothermal and solar energy sources. This new project reinforces that AboitizPower, together with its partners, is the country’s largest producer of renewable energy from the private sector. Renato Calderon, Officer-in-Charge of Whessoe Philippines Construction, Inc., one of Hedcor’s partners for the project, said that safety has been at the forefront of their operations since day one. “AboitizPower is very particular with the safety of our workers for the construction of the hydropower plant. Thus, we ensure that all our workers are given the neces-
sary education on safety prior to deployment,” Calderon said. He also shared that they conduct Daily Safe Task Instruction (DSTI), which includes a discussion on the area condition, task briefing, and risk assessment, as well as reminders on the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Chris Sangster, AboitizPower Executive Director for Project Development and Execution, said that this safety milestone is a collaborative effort between AboitizPower and its partners, Whessoe and Alangdeo General Construction. “This, for us, is certainly a time to celebrate and to congratulate everybody for such a milestone of a million safe man hours. It certainly is a team effort to get to this point. You don’t get here by chance. It takes a lot of planning, control, and discipline,” Sangster said. Days of quickies THESE days of quickies, everyone owns at least one, if not sophisticated, mobile phone. Even parents have allowed their school kids to own mobile phones because of easy and convenient access wherever they are, anytime, anywhere. I n d e e d , t i m e h av e changed. Gone are the days when bondings are most common among friends, or members of the family for that matter. Mobile phones are now part of our lifestyles such that we have become immobile without these high tech gadgets. The truth of the matter is, subconsciously, we are now ‘addicted’ by our
constant use of cell phones -- calling, texting, emailing , FB browsing. Name it, you have it on your gadget, pronto. Mobile phones have become too much of a good thing, and for that, you are in panic attack when you forget your phone, or worse, lost it. Smart phones have become man’s best friends nowadays, yet we are entrapped subconsciously by the many ‘good things’ our mobile phones have been providing us. Mobile phones are one of the phenomenal inventions of man in this era of tech-driven society. It completely changed the way we interact these
days. You can call, send text messages, read emails, play games as well as read and edit documents while on the go. And everywhere you go, we see people sporting the latest mobile phone models. Leaving home without our phones these days are akin to leaving without brushing your teeth, or combing your hair. Today, socializing that involves real interaction is very rare to happen. We are reduced to interacting on social platforms such as Facebook or chat applications such as Viber and WhatsApp. While there is nothing expressly wrong with chatting with our friends on these platforms, it can be

a problem if it is done at the expense of face to face interaction. In a family where every member has a mobile phone and uses it every time they are together, this might cause breakdown of relationships, or worse, disorientation of values within the family. Cheap gimmick, malicious attacks
IT’s not even the official start of the campaign season and yet local politicos in this part of the country, including a “dayo” (outsider) who claims roots in Cagayan de Oro City and yet has the temerity to talk about its situation as if he has all the solutions to its problems, are working overtime to court the voters. One such example is that Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) game held here in Cagayan de Oro between the Magnolia HotShots and the Meralco Bolts that was graced by senatorial administration candidate Bong Go. While Go sat courtside with Mayor Oscar Moreno and enjoyed the game, lo and behold the mayor’s
rival Gabriel “Pompee” La Viña made his own grand entrance to greet Go, who directed him to greet his rival in the May elections. Rather than be looked on as opportunistic and to show himself gracious to the gathered crowd, a sizable number of whom booed him loudly for his timed “grand entrance”, La Viña shook hands with Moreno who was gracious enough to return the gesture. But let’s minimize if possible for now any promotion of any opposition candidate in this piece. I would like to focus my discussion on what I consider to be quite debasing, utterly disgusting verbal potshots and tirades launched by La Viña’s trolls and paid hacks—yes, as a
self-proclaimed social media expert during the 2016 election campaign season, he knows how the game is played—against Moreno and his allies, including those who work under him. ********* It’s not uncommon and is in fact expected for political rivals to engage in mudslinging since that practice has its roots in the rise to power of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos. In trying to promote their candidacies, the opposition had employed the services of La Viña, who as mentioned earlier is no stranger to dirty campaign tactics in social media despite projecting himself as being above it all, to do the dirty work in demolishing Mayor Oscar

Moreno’s reputation to the city residents. To city residents of Cagayan de Oro, I say let’s not kid ourselves; La Viña is being used and he knows he is being used, by the opposition to reclaim City Hall from the incumbent Moreno administration. The conservative-socialist discourse
THE socialist thought is now seeping into America’s consciousness proved by the current discourse between the conservative Republicans and the liberal Democrats, with the former accusing the latter of veering toward socialist radicalism. What is observably missing in the current discourse is the realization by any of the two parties that socialism is a reality waiting to be pushed as viable alternative to the greed of capitalism that the conservatives are trying their best to shield from being transformed into something else where that greed is at least tempered. Socialism must be understood as an antidote to the greed that capitalism by nature adheres to and zeal-
ously promotes. Everything that we see now from the economic, political and even socio-cultural-religious realms move according to the dictates of capitalism’s greed. Capitalism’s defenders, however, may say that such greed is the one thing that is pushing the economy to develop at a rate we are now witnessing and experiencing. True. But its resultant negative impact on society as a whole is something that is unwanted and should never be accepted. Who would want poverty to become as pervasive as it is now where more than half of the world’s wealth is in the hands of just one percent of the world’s population while the rest
of the world’s population is fighting over the rest of the world’s wealth? While many abhor this situation, paradoxically, many, if not all, also desire to perpetuate it in the hope of partaking in the life that the one percent is currently enjoying. This is the logic of capitalism’s greed that turned everyone to become greedy as well instead of working to have it dismantled. Majority, if not all, want to be in the one percent echelon of the population given every human’s desire for wealth, power and fame. Since last Wednesday was the start of the Lenten season, perhaps it is but right for us who belong to the predominant Christian faith in this parts to

reflect on the reality where a handful have so much for themselves while the masses of the population could hardly make both ends meet, if at all, in life? Is the situation reflective of the teachings of our Lord whose passion, death and resurrection we celebrate during this season? Teachers: Are We Truly Heroes? By RYAN BOYD M. PAHAPAY
In every teachers day celebration students are honoring us by giving flowers, love letters, and gifts because according to them “My Teacher, My Hero” and this is the theme used by Department of Education during the celebration. And we teachers are proud to say “there would be no lawyers, engineers, doctors, soldiers and etc. without the teacher”, and that is true, because I witnessed how my mother being my teacher in Grade three molded me to be the person I am. Not so long ago the world of education was shocked by the news that a high school student stubbed his teacher to death while writing on the board, a college professor was allegedly accused of sexual harassment by his student, teachers in the senior high school were arrested in a buy-bust operation selling illegal drugs, and nevertheless a junior high school student committed suicide because she
was bullied by her classmates and teacher. In this situation, are we still the hero that our students are dreaming of? Are we still the hero that would somehow rescue them in times of trouble when things get harder in their studies? Are we still the hero molding them into a better citizens of the nation someday? Are we still the hero who will guide them in achieving their dreams? Or, this pictures of us as heroes will only live in their wild imagination, because instead of molding them into a better person we break them and causing them frustrations in life. Learning is fun, they said. But in some situations, children are no longer found learning fun and enjoyable due to a lot of assignments and projects that are too expensive for them. And the worst is, requiring them projects which bear no connection to their lessons. For example, the lesson in Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao; which stressed out the value of giving and the teacher is asking the students a cake because it’s
her birthday on the next day with specific brand, by doing that, points will be added in the pupils performance. Wow! Are we still the hero they dreamed us to be? We have a lot of options to choose. Not all teachers are doing these things to their students. I still believe in the heart and passion of the teachers towards teaching because I’m one of the teachers striving for quality, fair and practical education to our children. This article is not bound to criticize the teachers but to serve as a waking call for us so that we may be able to unleash the heroism in us so that the legacy of the great teachers from the past like Plato, Aristotle, and Confucius and etc. will not be wasted. We all have heroic acts on our own. It doesn’t need to be huge. Remember what mother Theresa said, “Do small things with great love”. Be a hero, today. Construction workers urged to take local jobs THE labor department has urged skilled workers to consider local employment in the construction industry and support the government in the full blast implementation of the Build Build Build Program rather than applying for jobs abroad. Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III explained that slowing down the deployment of construction workers as much as 90 percent is not a way of preventing them to choose highpaying jobs overseas but to inform them of the need for manpower in the local construction sector. “Construction workers are badly needed here in our country that’s why we are slowing down the deployment to address the manpower shortage in the local construction industry and support implementation of the infrastructure program of the President,” Bello said.
The labor chief said that around 800,000 to one million skilled workers in the field of construction, architecture, and engineering are needed up to 2022 to address labor shortage with country’s construction boom. Bello also said that Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is now accelerating the training and upgrading of the skills of workers to address the problem of job and skills mismatch, which is one of the reasons why vacancies in construction are not filled. “There is a strong local jobs growth but vacancies are not filled either because of skilled workers going abroad or their skills do not match to the available jobs in the market. That’s why DOLE are working together with concern agencies to up-skills our workers and urge them to work locally,” Bello said.

for Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARB) in one of the most remote barangays in Infanta, Pangasinan. The CommunityManaged Potable Water Supply and Sanitation and Hygiene (CPWASH) project installed in Barangay Pita aims to provide potable drinking water in far-flung communities using a lowcost technology that can be easily maintained and managed by the residents. This includes iron removal filters that strain water coming from the pump and bio-sand filters for water coming from the faucet. Another component of the project are bio-gas digesters that convert organic wastes into
methane gas that can be used by the residents for cooking. The CPWASH project, which cost P245,000, has 14 stand pipes along the street that offer potable water simultaneously. It will benefit 100 household beneficiaries and the integrated school in the barangay. Pita is one of thirteen remote barangays in Infanta, the last frontier of Pangasinan. It is 23 kilometers from the town proper or a 2-hour drive. There is no public transportation regularly plying the route. Elf trucks and “kalongkalong,” a type of a top-down tricycle, are the common alternatives. The road going to Pita is a narrow opening
between mountains and large rocks scatter along the way. The road is dusty during the dry season while the rainy season renders it slippery and inaccessible. Because of the road condition, basic necessities such as potable drinking water are not always available to the community. “Malimit na problema dito ang kakulangan ng tubig. Mayroon namang supply, kaya nga lang hindi maayos ang distribusyon. In my eleven years of teaching in an elementary public school, I encountered different situations happening in the lives of our children. They shared their experiences happily together with their friends and classmates. They have shared the happy moments and fun memories with their families to their peers. It seems like everything is perfect in the eyes of these children. And we teachers noticed these situations, and we are happy seeing them. There was an intance where I was shocked upon knowing the situations of most of our school children today. I was shocked not because I won the million peso jackpot prize from a lottery. I was shocked because I never expected that beyond the happiness these poor children are showing to us, out of 47 pupils I am handling in a classroom only 5 of them living with a complete family. And the rest, they are living in
the house of their relatives, family’s friends, and most of the time in their grandmothers. And out from those 47 pupils, only 2 children have been properly provided with the necessary things for education, food and decent clothing, and the rest have nothing. In my opinion, government must focused more on strengthening the families. Educating them and acting a law that would somehow penalize the parents who are abandoning their children. Because I think, the strength of the nation lies in the family. Even though, how hard we are extending our efforts of molding these children, their brokenness will forever be engraved in their hearts, and that is why, we are producing citizens who are problematic, because mathematics and the rest of the subjects in Philippine education cannot provide an answer to their questions, it’s their families. And soon, these children would also be parents someday. We cannot give what
we don’t have. In other words, these children who will soon be parents don’t have the idea of how they are going to care for their families, because they don’t have a family in the first place. Somehow, there were people coming from broken families who are successful right now, but the question is; is he completely healed from his brokenness from the past? The greatest gift that we could give to our children is not the toys and gadgets that the technology today could give. It is the love and happiness not from other people or from his relatives. It is the love and happiness from his family. For those who are planning to make a family or already have a family on their own, please make your family happy surrounded by love and compassion. The youth is the hope of the nation, but I strongly believe that the family is the key in building the nation.

SCHOOLS and learning centers implementing the Technical-Vocational Education and Training (TVET) through the TechVoc track in Kto12 adopted the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Training Regulations on different specializations ranging from Home Economics, Agri-Fishery Arts, Industrial Arts, Information and Communication Technology, and TVL Maritime. Currently, there are 87 specializations prescribed by the Department of Education (DepEd) Kto12 based on Training Regulations. These Training Regulations refers to the packages of competency standards, training standards, and assessment and certification. Skills training by taking up Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) course can help our Senior High School (SHS) learners achieve their goals. This is

MinDA vows to boost opportunities in Halal industry DAVAO CITY -- Seeing the potential of Mindanao as a Halal production hub in the Philippines, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) said it will push for an island-wide approach that will maximize opportunities for local businesses. Amhed Jeoffrey Datukan, MinDa management officer,
said Wednesday the agency is eyeing the creation of the Mindanao Halal Council to chart an industry roadmap to take advantage of the estimated USD3-trillion Halal industry. Datukan said Mindanao has the biggest potential being home to the majority of Muslims in the Philip-
pines and the country’s food basket. Datukan, however, said this initiative needs the involvement of local government units that will assist MinDA in identifying potential areas of investments in their respective areas. In Mindanao, only Davao City has its own Davao City

The best part there is we learn to cultivate God-given talent in us so that it will grow and help others. In my own little ways, I never hide my talents and I shared them to other people. I never buried them to the ground but instead I gave them for free to those who are willing to have, since God gave them to me without costs. As a teacher inclined to music, I am doing free lessons to the children in our school and I started it in my own students who possess the
passion towards music. I started to introduced to them the basic note sight reading using their flute recorder because I believe that in most of the teachers who are teaching music are only up to musical theories but never in application, since they are also incapable of doing it. And now, my students are already sight readers using the flute recorder. Then, I started to introduce the basics in playing violin, guitar, piano, drum set, and the proper ways of singing as well. I felt the happiness that money couldn’t give. We are fulfilled when we see others are improving and empowered because of our effort without counting the costs. The true essence of happiness is when we are happy giving what we have and sharing other people without expecting returns. A small act of kindness will create ripple effects to people. And sooner, these children will do the same thing passing on the legacy I made by giving the God-given gifts for free.

PSBank Reports PhP2.7 Billion in 2018 Net Income PSBank, the thrift-banking arm of the Metrobank Group, increased its net income in 2018 to PhP2.7 Billion. This translates to a return on equity of 11.4% and a return on asset of 1.2%. Net interest income of PhP11.3 Billion is up 2.3% year-on-year. “PSBank proactively responded to last year’s challenges brought about by higher interest rates and inflation by focusing on sales and improving on its operating efficiencies, without compromising its commitment in providing excellent customer service,” PSBank President Jose Vicente Alde said. The Bank’s total assets amounted to PhP237.7 Billion, 6.5% higher versus last year. Total gross loans reached PhP156.7 Billion, a PhP10.4 Billion or 7.1% year-on-year increase. On the funding side, total deposits of PhP200.7 Billion improved by PhP11.8 Billion or 6.2% versus last year. Total Capital Adequacy Ratio was at 13.9% while Common Equity Tier 1 Ratio was at 11.3%. Both are above the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ minimum required level. PSBank completed its PhP8.0 Billion stock rights offer after the offer period closed on January 11, 2019. The offer to eligible shareholders of 142,856,925 common shares was priced
at PhP56.00 per share. The rights shares were listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange on January 18, 2019. The PhP8.0 Billion offer was taken up entirely by the Bank’s existing shareholders, with support seen across the shareholder base. Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez pushed businesses to invest locally and help the government develop regional growth centers that create more economic activities outside Metro Manila during the 3rd De Oro Business and Investment Conference in Compostela Valley on 5 March 2019. Sec. Lopez shared that Region XI was the seventh top province with highest approved investments in 2018. This follows President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive to promote cities and provinces in Visayas and Mindanao as investment destinations. The DTI chief underscored that the Philippines is on an economic breakout and currently implementing economic strategies focusing on manufacturing resurgence as well as inclusive, innovation-led industrialization. Likewise, Sec. They reverted back to being capitalist countries with all its attendant greed where one percent of their population just like America control more than half of their country’s wealth. If socialism be made a real antidote to capitalism’s greed, it should be anchored on what the Christian faith teaches, a transformation of the mind because it is the mind that shapes human desires for wealth, power and fame. 10 NPA rebs surrender in Maguindanao TA C U R O N G C i t y - Ten New People’s Army (NPA) rebels have surrendered to the government due to the ongoing military pressure against the group in the remote borders of Sultan Kudarat and Maguindanao provinces, military officials said on Thursday. Lt. Col. Oliver Baylon, commander of the 1st Marine Battalion Landing Team-7 (MBLT-7), said the communist rebels returned to the folds of the law on Tuesday with the help of officials in Barangay Rifao, Upi town in Maguindanao. He said the surrenderees belong to the Squad Primera led by Cesar Marcos Manguda, alias Commander Amina/Alas of the Cherr y Mobile Platoon under Guerrilla Front 73, which is operating in the municipalities of Lebak and Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat province. Since last month, 15 NPA rebels have surrendered to the MBLT-7
due to the continuous military operations in the area, Baylon said. The NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, is classified as a terrorist organization by the Philippine and the United States governments. I am a teacher in Grade V level handling a group of journalism students whose intellects and abilities are advance than the regular sections. These students are so competitive in most of the discussions we had in our class. Some of them immediately got the answers to the questions even if these were not done yet. They express their thoughts and ideas whenever they’re asked to speak. They’re so enthusiastic to perform in their academic subjects and even in the cocurricular activities, except in MAPEH especially music. And that’s because they don’t possess yet the basic understanding of the musical theories and much more on the application. They already performed rhythmic patterns but cannot get the right melody of the piece that I’m providing them. On the other hand, here comes a student who is very silent in the class. He has some ideas but compared to his classmates he’s far behind. In our quizzes, his scores were not impressive and satisfying. Then I began to wonder why he was included in the list of students that would qualify to be in the journalism section, where in fact he is not performing well. In my mind I judged that kid so negatively. I gave my pupils an assignment, which they shall bring a flute recorder on the next week so that they will learn sight reading in simple musical pieces by using it. They were so excited for that day to come. When I introduced the basic
way of making that instrument to sound well, then they were complaining because when they started making a sound from lower C to higher C it doesn’t sound well. We were slowly sight reading every note of the piece “As the Deer”, they said it’s hard. So, I leave that piece as their assignment. On the following week during their performance task, I sense their anxiousness. No one has performed perfectly that piece except to that kid whom I judged negatively. I was so, shocked to what I have witnessed from that very day. Every time I asked for a volunteer to perform musical piece which was new to them, no one could but he has done it perfectly. His classmates became inferior to him when it comes to music. They will volunteer his name whenever I asked for someone to perform a piece in front of the class and he became happy when his classmates did so. I was so surprised when I learned that he already mastered all the musical pieces found in our music book. Then I told myself that this kid is amazing. With a short span of time, that very silent student is now huge in the eyes of his classmates and especially to me. I never thought that through music a child’s life has changed and be able to show his real ability. He now had the guts to express his thoughts not only in music alone but in all of his subjects. He was once a caterpillar which transform into a beautiful butterfly. And now, he became popular to his classmates to the extent that they would call him “The Music Man”.

BEYOND business deal, the partnership of Apex Mining Co., Inc. (AMCI) and FDC Misamis Power Corporation (FDC Misamis) has started “touching lives” among poor families in the towns of Maco and Mabini in Compostela Valley (ComVal) Province. This, as AMCI and FDC Misamis held the cacao planting and medical-dental mission in Barangay Masara, one of the company’s eight host villages in Maco town,
on February 21 and 22, 2019, respectively. Those endeavors were in line with AMCI’s 49th Founding Anniversary this 2019 as one of the oldest mining firms in ComVal. On the first day, employees from both companies led the ceremonial planting of 300 cacao seedlings in a 40-hectare productive area within the mining compound. AMCI’s Environment Manager Danilo Regis said, “It’s just hitting two birds with one stone.” “We plant cacao trees to reforest our productive areas here in the mining site as part of our consistent Greening Program and, at the same time, providing livelihood to the people in our host barangays.” Cacao planting is also a stepping stone to the company’s long-term development plan towards establishing a chocolate processing plant in ComVal in the next couple of years, disclosed Community Relations Manager Ferdinand Dobli. Three years from now, said Dobli, the cacao trees will start bearing fruits so, by that time, they can start producing chocolates. “We really want to empower people in our host barangays through chocolate or highquality chocolate production very soon.” With the allotment of 40 hectares of the productive area for cacao planting, added Dobli, they’re targeting to grow an almost 45,000 cacao trees based on 1,111/hectare planting density. Apart from the abovementioned activity, more than 600 people, including children from the eight host barangays of AMCI, also availed of free medical and dental services and medicines on the second day. “You’ve started touching lives,” claimed Woodro Diaz, a 54-year-old security guard-turned-jobless due to diabetes.
Diaz, after consulting a doctor for severe coughing, also availed free medicines which, for him, is “truly a big help since I don’t have a job now.” AMCI’s Vice President for Operations and Resident Manager Narciso Mutia expressed gratefulness to FDC Misamis’ help. “Maganda na tumulong kayo sa amin,” he exclaimed in Tagalog. Furthermore, Vice President for Finance Rosemarie Padilla said, “Hope we could do this quarterly or annually for the sake of the ComVal people.” Padilla noted that it was the first time she experienced that one of their (business) partners took the time and effort to join with their company’s endeavor(s) meant for the health and welfare of the people in communities surrounding their mining hub. FDC Misamis’ Community Relations Specialist Analiza Miso said, “We’ll do our best to sustain our partnership with AMCI, especially for the sake of people’s health.” “Our company is thankful for this rare opportunity to also serve the residents of ComVal which, this kind of endeavor, is also in line with our advocacy in serving Mindanaoans.” FDC Misamis President Juan Eugenio L. Roxas, on the other hand, congratulated AMCI for being an industry leader in nearly five decades.
