LTFRB-10 to transport groups: Consider the interest of the riding public By GERRY LEE GORIT Correspondent
CAGAYAN de Oro City-Petitions for an increase in public utility jeepney (PUJ) fare has not yet reached the regional office of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in Northern Mindanao although the agency has assured that it will act on the request. Three transport groups have recently said in interviews that they want the fare increase for PUJs in the region. According to reports, the National Confederation of Transport Union (NCTU) wants and increase of P10 from the minimum fare of P7, while the Solidarity of Transport Alliance in Northern Mindanao-Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (Starex-Piston) is pushing for P8 PUJ fare. But LTFRB-10 regional
director Aminoden Guro said they have yet to receive any petition from the groups. “It would be better for them to submit their respective petitions now so we can endorse them to the LTFRB central office,” Guro said, adding that all petitions for fare increase will be reviewed by the agency aside from the public hearing that will be conducted as part of the review process. He said the fare increase that the drivers and operators are asking must be within the allowable limit as the interest of the riding public should also be considered. “Once there is an increase in PUJ fare, it will affect thousands of commuters. While those who benefit from it are just few, thousands will have to bear the brunt of paying more,” Guro said. See seek, page 7

OROQUIETA City--Misamis Occidental Governor Herminia M. Ramiro and Oroquieta City Mayor Jason Paredes Almonte and other local officials led the opening ceremony of the Batang
Pinoy Mindanao qualifying leg held here on Tuesday afternoon. Some 3880 athletes, 620 coaches, 272 technical and delegation officials, representing 70 cities and provinces all over Mindanao gathered here for the much-awaited Batang Pinoy Mindanao qualifying leg.
The Mindanao leg was originally set June 10-15, 2017 but was moved because of the Marawi siege and the declaration of martial law. The athletes are coming from the out-of-ofschool youth, in-school youth, in-school students and Filipino-foreign youth See kicks, page 7
NPA loses 209 firearms in Jan-Feb ASIDE from being hit by massive surrenders, the New People’s Army (NPA) has also lost 209 high- and low-powered firearms in the first two months of 2018, a military spokesperson said Wednesday. This is apart from the 155 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) seized during the same months, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) public affairs office chief, Lt. Col. Emmanuel Garcia, said in a statement. In the areas covered by the Eastern Mindanao Command alone, a total of 165 firearms and 131 IEDs were confiscated from the rebels and their supporters over the same period. Garcia said the 16th Infantry Battalion (IB) discovered an arms cache in Calinan district, Davao City on Feb. 27, as revealed by a former rebel, while troops also seized six firearms and other war materiel. The 66th IB also discovered three arms cache that yielded six high-powered firearms, five IEDs, and several war materiel in Compostela Valley on Feb. 21, as disclosed by rebels who surrendered to the IB. Surrenderers, mostly from the eastern part of Mindanao, bring along their firearms and submit them to authorities. Aside from the immediate assistance and enrollment of these former rebels to the Comprehensive Local Integration Program, they also receive remuneration for firearms they surrender. “The AFP will continue to conduct operations to degrade the armed capability of the terrorists and further enhance Community Support Program to empower local government units in providing basic services to the people in their communities to encourage more NPAs to surrender,” Garcia said.
