Gov’t troopers recover body of NPA combatant By CRIS DIAZ Executive Editor
CLAVERIA, Misamis Oriental – Pursuing government troopers recovered the dead body of a male combatant of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in the hinterlands of Gingoog City, the military reported Tuesday. Lt. Jefferson M. Mariano, the spokesperson of the army’s 58th Infantry Battalion, said that a rebel returnee has identified the dead body as that of Oliver Hulliao, alias “Reynan,” a resident of Sitio Lantad, in Kibanban, Balingasag, Misamis Oriental. Mariano said that Hulliao was believed to be among the armed NPA group engaged by the military in a 30-minute firefight in Samay, a hinterland village in Gingoog City Sunday morning. During the hot pursuit operation, Hulliao’s lifeless body was recovered in the mountain village of Binakalan, Monday afternoon, Mariano said. He said that the military brought Hulliao’s body to a funeral home in Gingoog City for proper turnover to the family and be accorded a decent burial. Mariano said that two army soldiers of the 58IB were also wounded in the firefight, but were in stable condition after undergoing treatment in an army station hospital in Cagayan de Oro City. He said that aside from recovering the body of Hulliao, pursuing troopers also recovered one M16 rifle, one short magazine for M16, four magazines for AK47, one Signus radio, one cellular phone with Sim Card, nine rounds 40mm ammunition, assorted medical paraphernalia, and subversive documents in the encounter site.

CEB posts P22.2B net loss for 2020; raises P28.5B fresh capital for 2021 and beyond THE Philippines’ leading carrier, Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), reports a P 22.2B net loss for full year 2020, following the heavy impact of the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis. With health and safety concerns resulting in the decrease of passenger confidence and heightened travel restrictions, CEB’s operational and financial performance were severely affected. For 2020, CEB flew five (5) million passengers, 78% lower than 2019; and a total of 41,804 flights, 71% lower than 2019. When the country was placed in Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in March 19, 2020, CEB’s commercial operations were grounded. Commercial operations resumed on June, 3 albeit gradually, with most of the Philippines still in General Community Quarantine (GCQ). This resulted in various requirements and processes from local government units, which continue to be a challenge not only for CEB and other airlines, but for the traveling public as well. Pre-COVID, CEB flew about 400 flights a day. It flew an average of 47 flights a day in the third quarter, to 76 flights a day by De-
cember, about 20% of preCovid levels. This growth was primarily domesticdriven and supplemented by cargo operations, which performed better than expected. CEB revenues posted at P22.6B for 2020, 73% lower than 2019. Cargo operations contributed P5.4B, or 24% of CEB’s total revenues in 2020, as cargo freighter and charter flights contributed to higher yield. In addition to two ATR 72-500 cargo freighter aircraft, CEB began utilizing its first A330 cargo converted aircraft in November 2020, which allowed it to carry more cargo on long-range flights. Total operating expenses reduced by 40% to Php43.4B. Fuel showed the steepest decline, as less flights were coupled with lower fuel cost. Other operating expenses likewise reduced as CEB continues its rigorous cost reduction initiatives, including the right-sizing of its network, fleet, and manpower, while improving operational efficiencies through various digitalization efforts. CEB closed Full year 2020 with Operating Loss of P20.77B, and negative EBITDAR of Php932M. Cebu Pacific is unique
among its peers as it entered the COVID pandemic with a historically strong ability to generate free cash flow. End-2019, its net debtto-equity ratio was 1.26x. With its fleet of 74 aircraft, CEB had total assets of P128.46B by end-2020, and its net debt-to-equity ratio was still at a strong 3.17x, enough to support CEB in this challenging environment. AMID this Covid-19 pandemic, doomsayers are on the run — spreading their lies and deceptions via social media platforms. Their hard-boiled fake news well-crafted to fire up their level of stupidity and callousness are never-ending in search for their personal egomania and political greed. Most recent of whom are these classic paid hacks salivating like hungry vultures searching on their preys, acting like frustrated warriors in a sci-fi movie. They are making it appear that the country is in complete chaos, in total disarray and needs a surgical
solution by calling a “fight, if necessary” mantra. Such was another motherhood statement —a sweeping declaration from a trying hard group of spin doctors in their desire to improve their client’s public image. To foment a division and further sidestepping responsibility for the coronavirus pandemic will drain us no end and to nowhere. That said, the penchant of finding fault in the way we confront the pandemic is basically useless and unproductive semantics at this stage of fear and uncertainty. A Lenten Reflection: Modern-day Simon of Cyrene HOLY Week is a time to pause and focus on the Passion (suffering) and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the events that led up to it. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, this is the 2nd year that we will not be able to observe it as we used to. But this should not prevent us from reflecting on its real meaning and significance. One of the Holy Week traditions that we do as a family is the Way of the Cross, which is the step-bystep retelling of the crucifixion narrative. Of the fourteen stations, I have always been drawn even as a child to the 5th Station... “Simon helps Jesus Carry the Cross.” Perhaps, it’s because I have always been moved
and touched by the story of how an ordinary man, who was then merely passing by, got to help Jesus carry the cross. How blessed was Simon, that from the thousands of spectators who lined up the streets, he was handpicked to share the Passion of Christ. As I do my personal Lenten reflections, I cannot help but reflect again on the 5th Station and how it relates to the journey we went through one year into this health crisis. There’s no doubt that we are in a very difficult situation. Many are suffering, making tons of sacrifices, scared, confused, and feeling hopeless. Each one carrying his own cross. But amidst these sufferings and miseries, we find

Some had to settle for reduced work hours and pay cuts. While others didn’t mind having to shift to low-level positions or do menial jobs. Covid-19 pandemic has caused an unprecedented change in all walks of life. It has overwhelmed all sectors and overthrown people around the world to a new social and economic crisis. Education is one of those hit hard by the crisis. Due to the pandemic around 1.52 billion students were stranded at home and over 60.2 million teachers remain out of school according to a March 2020 report by the UN Secretary-General. To adjust to the crisis and to ensure classes remain, the digital classroom has emerged as the most significant option before the academic stakeholders. Following the endorsement from the international body like UNESCO to the national body like the Ministry of HRD, the millions of schools and higher educational institutions have shifted their physical classrooms to online sessions to ensure ‘learning never get disrupted’ for the learners amidst the isolation crisis. Switching off the offline classroom to digital space with its supportive systems has caused a paradigm shift in the formal education systems. The digital enabling online teaching is democratic and can be accessible even beyond geographical barriers. It edges over the traditional classroom especially in aspects of facilitating home-based learning opportunities for learners in times of the country-wide lockdown catastrophe. It is now playing a crucial role in building fundamental life skills and providing learning experiences to young adolescence at home. The digital platform is something new for both teachers and students. There had been no training intervention to empower teachers with digital skills before or immediately after the hastened nation-wide lockdown. So, teachers who have parallel skills in teaching in the face-to-face classroom are unfortunately crippled in this process of on-going digital shifting. They are now struggling to learn new techno-pedagogies to teach in online classes. Teachers are spending more time to skill up themselves with the required digital mastery in virtual classrooms. However, many teachers feel awkward with the digital ecosystem of online classes which induced new concerns about the online teaching. Further, many teachers have expressed deep worry about the effectiveness of the teachinglearning process in digital classes. Some teachers admit that pupils and students don’t understand half of learning activities even in the real classroom. “We want to conduct regular online classes but most of our students are from marginal families and they don’t have internet connection,” one teacher commented. Online teaching has different problems and those problems are varied across the different regions of the country.
Nevertheless, the government have taken several initiatives to overcome these barriers to suffice the e-education to students across the poor and marginal sections of society. L imit at ions of on line teaching show issues related to instructional designs, students’ online discipline, learning engagement in the virtual classroom, teacher-taught relationships, online assessment, non-cognitive developments of students, and so on. Many questions have also aroused in teachers’ minds, from how to start online classes to make use of available e-resources to creating a supportive learning environment Amidst the current crisis, teachers may take the following response measures to improve teaching in the digital classrooms Teachers may set optimal class size for online teaching. It has been observed that educational institutions do not put any upper or lower limits on online class size. However, experts have asked stakeholders to limit the class size even for online teaching as we have for offline teaching in the conventional classroom. According to a research, a large size online class with 40 or more students’ enrolment is ideal for ‘foundational and factual knowledge acquisition’. On the other side, a small class size with 15 or even fewer is better ‘to develop higher-order thinking, mastery of complex knowledge, and student skill development’. Virtual teaching has put new demands from teachers in curriculum reconstruction and teaching content designs. It behests teachers to provide enriched ‘human and non-human resources’ and pertinent ‘animated and unanimated’ studymaterials. In the traditional classroom, a teacher acts as an instructor and a guide but this role of the teacher has incredibly changed in online teaching. A teacher is now no longer acting just as an instructor but a content developer and a designer of online curriculums. The teacher needs a good content-communicating skill too in virtual teaching. Here some simple tips a teacher should keep in mind while preparing digital contents including PPTs such as it must have explicit texts and improved contents with detailed facts and explanation, language must be simple and formal and must be well-designed with the use of graphic themes, gaming features, and various templates. Also, especially when making video-lecture; it should be kept in short; around 30-45 minutes according to UNICEF, from introducing the topic to justify the need and main themes presentation to recapitulation at the end. Besides, the teachers should uphold accountability to ensure video and voice qualities or the enrichment of the content before sharing them with students.

In coping with post-Covid-19 pandemic, some higher education institute are said to be converting the existing curriculum through an online mode in its best possible way. But how effective this teaching is? How enriching is it to students and teachers for now and in the future. There are significant concerns according to reports, such as that students are tired of long hours of screen time, overlapping lectures, lack of self-learning time, connectivity/bandwidth issues, Covid positive cases in the family, chaos in the home atmosphere, and many more. Often these led to anxiety and uncertainties. The larger question is, does our teaching delivery needs a refresh command? Perhaps the most critical shortcoming in the current online teaching is converting the classical teaching methodology (like a lecture) into a digital or online mode. Teachers have tried best to adopt a flexible way of using recorded video, live sessions, and a quiz to overcome online delivery. In the meantime, many not-so-explored teaching methods have emerged as alternate options of teaching methods. Such a rise in few teaching methodologies is one of the best outcomes of the current online teaching. But can those methods offer a better result than a typical lecture? Approaches in teaching methods. The classical pedagogical approach is based on the science of teaching a child (‘Peda’ means child and ‘gogos’ means teaching). The teacher sensitizes students to follow and learn, and the teacher decides the
method and explains it. Students are not clear about the learning outcome in the beginning and dependent on the teacher. The methods like a lecture, tutorial, practical exercises, assignments, coaching, quiz, discussion all are conventional methods and found useful in a better offline interactive mode. The techniques like case teaching, role play, field visit, studio, and game are a few of the most effective methods in higher education than the pedagogical approaches. In this approach, learners learn in an environment created by the teacher. However, in the twentyfirst century, more connectedness to the web has led to new approaches in perceiving the teaching method, such as Heautagogy (self-determined learning) which has a notion of making capable learners who can learn on their own. The role of the teacher here is to mentor the students to learn responsibly from multiple sources. The Heautagogy trusts learners to bring the learning outcome with active mentoring. The teaching methods like flip-classroom, case, mentoring, mini-projects, short films, guided reading, and case study make innovative teaching options for exploring new-normal online teaching. New flexible teaching methods emerged during the pandemic. The lecture method’s comfort is both a strength and a threat for a teacher of higher education. Unless we take our vehicle into different terrain, we don’t become an experienced driver. The covid-19 has made the terrain much challenging for all the teachers calling to try new teaching methods.

Informal workers to be hired as contact tracers THE labor department volunteered the hiring of contract tracers under its emergency employment program to help curb the rate of Covid infection in the National Capital Region and four surrounding provinces. Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said he advised local government units in
the bubble area through the DILG in the recent meeting of the InterAgency Task Force dealing with the Covid pandemic. Bello said the LGUs just need to train workers to perform the task of contact tracer for a period of between 10 to 15 days in their respective communities and cities.

These thoughts haunt me in the middle of the night as I continue to live my life the way I wanted it to be. Planned...Just like my Daily Lesson Log for my class. I planned the things that I wanted to do as I wake up in the morning till I sleep at night. I planned my weekends so that not a single moment will be put into waste. But as the pandemic comes... my life seems so different and full of uncertainties. I am afraid of the unknown, afraid of
not knowing what to do. Afraid that my plan will not happen the way I need them to be. However,despite these unplanned events...I find refuge in the faith that there is someone up there watching over us and that everything happens for a reason. A reason to change, to cope and to adapt. These changes might hurt us, crumple us or even destroy us but as long as we believe that these changes are our opportunities to become better. These changes will make us reflect and think on how to continuously improve ourselves and be the best version of who we are. Let’s turn these reflections and thoughts into an armor and our weapon for success.

They stayed in a rented house in Bulacan in the years 2007-2009; However, sometime in September to December 2008, the petitioner caught the respondent as having an extramarital relationship with her paternal lady first cousin, named Melanie Ambawas who used to visit them in their rented conjugal house in Bulacan; During such first infidelity confrontation, the respondent squeezed the petitioner’s face; Sometime the February 2009, the petitioner got pregnant for the first time with their first child. But due to the firsthand experience of the respondent’s infidelity with her own first paternal cousin the two-months baby in her womb was miscarried in April 2009; Without adequately settling their marital conflicts, and in order to improve economically, the petitioner loaned from her domestic employer some amount to fund the respondent’s application for an OFW job in Saudi Arabia after gaining experience in the Steel Asia; Respondent left the Philippines to work with the AI Raji Company in Saudi Arabia in August of 2009 and worked there until the present. Until now, they are childless; On the other hand, the petitioner went home to her parent’s house in Sindangan, Z.N. to continue with her studies since the respondent promised to support her with the monthly remittance of P15k. As such, the petitioner continued her 3rd and 4th years of high school at the ALS in Sindangan, Z.N. and qualified to take a college degree in BS Information Technology at the St. Joseph Academy which she finished from 2013-2017; However, beginning 2010 and during the 10 years of their longdistance marriage, the parties had their marital trust gradually corroded social media indirectly informing her that her husband was into relationship with them; In one instance, one girl chatted her in FB messenger asking her, “Why is the picture of my boyfriend in your profile picture?” This and many other girls often confronted her that they are into relationship with the respondent which caused so much anxiety, depression, and emotional devastation on the part of the petitioner; When the petitioner would confront the evidences of the respondent’s womanizing each year when he comes home for a month’s vacation, the respondent merely remained silent and said nothing; Moreover, in 2017 when the petitioner graduated from her college degree, the respondent also stopped sending her any form of financial support forcing the petitioner to seek out any form of employment or income; After being adept in the use of computer technology with her BS IT degree, she sought to become a caregiver to an old retired man in Switzerland who financed her trip to and stay for three months as a tourist and caregiver of him there sometime in 2017; When she came home in 2018, the petitioner saw in the messenger of the FB account of the respondent some mutual love messages of another women to him. As such, in February 2018, the petitioner decided to separate for good as their relationship had already died and informed the respondent about her decision. Thus ended their mostly long-distance courtship of 2 years, and 11 years of long distance marriage from 2017 to 2018; Per findings in the Psychological Case Analysis, it is evident that both the petitioner and the respondent are psychologically incapacitated as evident by the petitioner’s Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder evident in the early adult stage of their lives; Such personality disorders were developed from childhood and became so ingrained in the personality of individuals concerned that these disorders have become PERMANENT, GRAVE and INCURABLE; With the above aforementioned diagnostic findings, it is accurately concluded that the marriage of the petitioner to the respondent was an invalid act afforded by the already formed Personality Disorders which were present before the marriage, which supports the psychological incapacity of the couple to contract marriage; Both of the parties were, from the very beginning, never able to assume or perform their moral and legal duties and obligations as husband and wife to each other due to their psychological incapacities, and that they were forced by circumstances to have an untimely marriage which existed now in paper only but never in reality; Moreover, the parties’ behavior during their period of co-habitation exhibits a lack and insufficient display of passion, compassion and commitment; It is now unbearable and painful on the part of the Petitioner to remain tied to Respondent who does not anymore observe mutual love, respect, and fidelity;

Ordinary citizens initiated fundraising campaigns, pooled resources, and mobilized people to alleviate the sufferings around us. In their big or small ways, there were so many Simons who just wanted to contribute and help somebody. As the virus is highly contagious, those who got infected were taken from their loved ones and put in isolation. They did not only suffer from physical pains but they have to battle loneliness and depression. But thanks to our very brave and dedicated medical front liners, COVID patients may be isolated but not alone. Our modern-day Simons of Cyrene is with them, attending to their needs, caring, and comforting them even if it means risking their lives. Many of the early deaths came from our front-liners who literally sacrificed their own lives to save others. While some may be doing this because they have to earn a living, for most, it’s borne out of their commitment and desire to help lessen the suffering and be a part of the solution to this crisis. Many are confused, scared, and stressed about what’s really happening. It’s not helping that they are getting different and conflicting information from different sources. These lead to either indecisiveness or making ill-informed and wrong decisions. We can be the Simons by making sure that we will only get info from reliable sources and disseminate facts. Let’s not contribute to spreading fake news and unverified info which only adds to the confusion and anxiety of others. If we do not know the full story, let’s not speculate or worse invent our version. The drastic changes brought by the pandemic challenged the status quo and forced many to go out of their comfort zones. While others are able to adjust, adapt and adopt, some are still struggling under the new ways of doing things. These people still lack the confidence that they can thrive under the new normal. To them, we will be the Simons who can be the source of inspiration, motivation, and empowerment. Through their own actions and deeds, a number of our fellow Filipinos have shown that despite and in spite of the crisis, we can actually still do a lot to make a difference for ourselves and for others. Yes, many have lost their source of income but many have also found better opportunities and are even thriving because they made the decision to make it happen! Let’s be the source of optimism, hope, and action. No one is spared from the hardships caused by the pandemic. Both small and big-time businesses were affected. Both management and rank and file employees losing their jobs. Both rich and poor are inflicted and dying from viruses. Even those with millions cannot even be saved from the wrath of the pandemic. Everyone is in need of a Simon of Cyrene nowadays. We all need someone praying for us, listening to us, comforting us, inspiring us, and just being there for us. But more importantly, let’s
be mindful that we can all be a Simon of Cyrene. That simple smile and hello, those simple acts of kindness, those inspiring messages posted on your social media, asking that simple question “how are you?” and giving the reassuring words of “I will pray for you”... all these simple and ordinary gestures from regular people like us can go a long, long way. There is a great deal of research showing that audio, video and computing can do many things better than what can be done in a classroom or even a physical or wet lab. Often, they are created by a single instructor working alone, but students are now used to higher quality standards in their use of media. Also, the resource is often not easily adaptable to meet another instructor’s specific needs. What is needed is a set of high-quality, open educational resources on common topics that can be adapted to different subject disciplines or contexts, by enabling the labels to be changed. Increasing urgency. Colleges are working together to develop and share applications of augmented and virtual reality, but what is needed is a broader national effort to create highquality, open digital media that can be shared across most of the common courses taught in colleges and universities. COVID-19 is giving increased urgency to such ideas.
