PH consumer confidence weakens on expected commodity price upticks MANILA -- The Philippine consumers’ confidence dropped to its lowest level in the first quarter of 2018 on expectations of higher prices of goods. However, monetary officials are confident this will improve in the second quarter as proven in the past surveys. Result of the central bank’s first quarter Con-

sumer Expectations Survey (CES) for 2018 showed an index of 1.7 percent, down from the previous quarter’s 9.5 percent and year-ago’s 8.7 percent. Respondents expect prices of basic commodities to rise but Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Assistant Governor Francisco Dakila Jr., in a briefing Monday, said it is hard to pin this to the tax reform since only one of the 5,569 households

nationwide that responded to the survey cited the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law. “It could be because of the expected higher prices of goods (as a result of the tax reform) but it is still quite early to establish a trend,” he said. “In the past, respondents cited higher prices as among the reasons for less optimism but the index

MANILA -- Drivers of ridesharing firm Uber in the Philippines and Southeast Asia must migrate to the platform of Grab after the Singapore-based company acquired its Californiabased corporate rival’s op-

erations in the region.

“To minimise disruption, Grab and Uber are working together to promptly migrate Uber drivers and riders, Uber Eats customers, merchant partners and delivery partners to the Grab

platform. The Uber app will continue to operate for two weeks to ensure stability for Uber drivers, who can find out how to sign-up to drive with Grab online,” Grab said in a statement Monday.

Every generation needs a new introduction to a discipline. Pupils come with diverse experiences and expectations. They need to be approached differently. Children nowadays need to be conditioned to view hard work, diligence and dedication as honorable, as respectable, and in no way a weakness, or something to be ashamed of. They need to be motivated to be learning enthusiasts,

bring out the best in their performance and instill in them the good values and appropriate behavior. This is the challenge that teachers have to face... Teaching requires never ending patience and a fountain of understanding for all the members of the community. This is what the pupils needed. A teacher is responsible not only in the academic performance of the pupils but also their holistic development. Teaching is hardwork and it can be emotionally draining. Yet, the passion to make a difference stop you from throwing up your hands in the air and giving up. Teach-

ers who are passionate about making a difference are more likely to make a difference (John Hattie). Passion is what drives people to excel despite the inevitable hurdles they face along the way. They find purpose in their calling – a purpose that drives them to work hard, to learn along the way and to achieve more than they have ever accomplished before. Being passionate to teach affects how students act and how well they do. Seeing younger kids succeeding, makes a teacher extremely happy. Thus, passion really matter.
