Volunteers make 1,500 face shields for Iligan frontliners

ILIGAN CITY -- Volunteers from Motivation Philippines in cooperation with the Philippine Red Cross, this city, have been massproducing ‘do-it-yourself ’ (DIY) face shields to be distributed to COVID-19 frontliners. Dubbed as the “One Thousand Five Hundred Project,” these volunteers plan to make 1,500 pieces of improvised health protection shields. Al Azanereeh Madale, volunteer nurse and founder of Motivation Philippines, said around 300 face shields were already handed-out to front liners. “Nag-decide kami na gawin namin ito as soon as possible because we feel na may urgency. We also wanted to make our frontliners feel na meron ding mga taong concerned sa kanila,” Madale said. [“We decided to do this as soon as possible because we felt the urgency. SENATOR Christopher Lawrence Go will undergo a self-quarantine after having contact with a House lawmaker who tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). In a statement issued Wednesday night, Go said he would follow quarantine protocols even though he is not exhibiting any symptoms of Covid-19.

“But since protocol requires that those who were directly exposed to persons positive for Covid-19 need to undergo self-quarantine, I am left with no choice but to comply,” he said. Go’s statement came after House appropriations committee chairperson Eric Yap tested positive for Covid-19. Northern M’nao records 3 new Covid-19 patients ILIGAN CITY -- The Department of Health in Region 10 announced Wednesday that three new patients tested positive of Covid-19, bringing to five the confirmed cases in Northern Mindanao this March. Dr. Dave Mendoza, DOH-10 assistant director, said the two new Covid-19 patients are admitted at Amai Pakpak Medical Center in Marawi City and the third is being treated at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) here. The two Covid-19 patients earlier reported have already died, the first one on March 8 and the second on March 22. In a press conference, Mendoza said the region has 219 patients under investigation (PUIs), 21 of whom are admitted in various hospitals while 35 have been discharged after treatment. DSWD readies over P5 million worth of food packs in Caraga By ALEXANDER LOPEZ

BUTUAN CITY – A total of 15,599 family food packs (FFPs) worth PHP5.7 million are being readied by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 13 (Caraga) as part of the agency’s preparation for relief augmentation to the families affected by Coronavirus disease (Covid-19). “The number of FFPs will increase in the coming days as repacking is still ongoing at our Disaster Operations Center in Tiniwisan, Butuan City,” Marko Davey Reyes of the DSWD-13 information office told Philippine News Agency on Wednesday. Reyes said some of the FFPs have been delivered to six preposition areas in the provinces and are ready for distribution if needed. “We usually do the augmentation through the re- READY FOOD ITEMS. Agri-based personnel exempted from home quarantine, DILG 10 says

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- For unhampered movement of food and essential goods, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) 10 reiterates that all farmers and farm workers, fisherfolks and agribusiness personnel shall be exempted from doing home quarantine. This is provided that they do not exhibit any one of the symptoms of COVID-19, the number of working farmers/fisherfolks/farm personnel is at minimum, safety protocols are ensured, and social distancing is practiced in the workplace. Marawi LGU regulates use of home quarantine passes MARAWI CIT Y -- The city government of Marawi issued a new guideline regulating the use of home quarantine passes. This, after the Association of the Barangay Councils of the Islamic City of Marawi, observed that holders of home quarantine pass used it as a license to loiter in streets, stores, and other establishments. City Mayor Majul Gandamra said the new guideline aims to regulate the unnecessary loitering in

Marawi and strengthen the city government’s efforts to contain and prevent the rapid spread of the coronavirus disease. Under Executive Order (EO) 2020-024, home quarantine passes “may only be validly used during Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, before curfew hours.” However, a home quarantine pass may be used in case of emergencies such as to seek medical assistance or confinement,

buy medicines and access other basic commodities. Exempted from the usage regulations are the city mayor, city councilors, punong barangays, and barangay kagawads. The EO also directed the closure of all stores such as but not limited to public markets, sari-sari stores, restaurants and karenderyas during Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. In case of extreme necessity, customers may personally knock these

stores to attend to their basic needs. Pharmacies/drug stores, clinics, and hospitals shall, however, remain open. Meanwhile, owners of stores and business establishments are directed not to allow customers to remain on their premises without a legitimate purpose. Government of Mambajao temporarily prohibits any act of peddling in the municipality, March 23. Under the Executive Order No. 16, all types of goods or things that are being carried for sale, regardless of volume or quantity, whether or not

used of vehicles is being employed, is prohibited except goods delivered directly to public market and other establishments allowed by local authorities. Affected peddlers will be provided a displacement area. They are di-

rected to sell their goods at Mambajao Public Market. Proper coordination shall be made to the Market Administrator as to area assignment and other concerns. All peddlers assigned at Mambajao Public Market should comply with t he re qui re me nt s on proper food handling and food preparation laid down under the Executive Order No. 12, mandating them to wear hygiene paraphernalia and health certification Identification card at all times. Zambo Norte state university mobilizes campuses vs. Covid-19

DAPITAN CITY, Zamboanga del Norte -- The Jose Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU) has mobilized its five campuses throughout the province to help in the fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). The new fabrication laboratory (FabLab) of the JRMSU campus here has been producing 3D-printed and laser-cut face shields, which are turned over to the University Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (UDRRM) unit for distribution to hospitals and checkpoints across the province. “We have just produced almost 500 face shields,” engineer Andrew Gallemit, FabLab head, told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Wednesday. “Hopefully, materials (polystyrene and acetate) from DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) will arrive tomorrow because we’re receiving requests from neighboring provinces. Are we now on the end of the world?

AS followers of Christ we can read in Matthew 24:114 that Jesus forewarned us about the coming terrible and scary times. The rising deaths of COVID19 and the lockdown to almost all countries and major cities around the world is the first time that ever happened in our lifetime. Majority of world power nations agreed that it is a biological weapon but each one is pointing one to another the origin of this virus. Our Lord Jesus Christ said that before His return super power leaders will betray and hate each other written in Matthew 24:10. The trade war between U.S.A. and China affects the global economy, the sanctions of U.S.A. towards Iran and the killings of great generals of Iran and Iraq last January 2 caused big grievances to international relationships. The civil war in Syria since 2011, more than half million-people died and

millions migrated and settle in Europe. Our Holy Bible declares that it is just the beginning of great sorrows like birth pangs. Finally, let me share to you the words of our Lord Jesus in Matthew 24:2122 that there is coming great tribulation period that will come on earth unequalled from the beginning of the world and never to be equaled again. It would be greater than this Covid19 virus and billions will die because if God will not shorten the pandemic, there shall be no one to live. If we are so scared today of Covid19 pandemic, the more we will prepare for the coming great tribulation. Today’s pandemic is not the end of the world yet. The end of the word doesn’t mean the end of humanity. Rather it will be the end of the wicked world system and the beginning of a new world order under the Lord Jesus Christ,

Revelation 19:11-21 and Revelation 20:6. During the Lockdown and community quarantine today, let us strengthen our family altar, read the bible together, pray to God for safety, assist those who need urgent help and start preparing our family for the coming worst catastrophe to come on earth. God will keep us from all harm and watches over our lives. Political correctness vs moral correctness

BOTH of them may share a lot of similarities. They can share some common ground. But they too have a lot of differences, and sharp and radical differences at that! We have to be keenly aware of these similarities and differences as much as possible so that we can be properly guided in our life. We cannot deny that nowadays many people just go by what they see around — the fads and trends — without checking on the basis and orientations of these fads and trends. The similarities between political correctness, and for that matter, any idea or sense of correctness, on the one hand, and moral correctness on the other, stem from the fact that the basic truths about man cannot be denied.

Everyone wants to know the truth and to pursue what is good and beautiful. That common, universal desire can put political correctness and moral correctness on the same footing. It’s when knowing what is true and what is genuinely good and beautiful when differences start to appear. And the differences can be sharp and radical. The main source of their sharp differences is none other than that political correctness is based only on some political consensus that perhaps at the start and for a while can coincide with moral correctness, but it can stray from it to the point of contradicting God’s laws. Sad to say, we are seeing this trend in many places. The idea of political correctness often regards God’s laws as not the pri-

mary consideration to make. What is considered of primary importance is what people want. And when they gather enough consensus, it can happen that God’s laws end up marginalized, then ignored, and then contradicted and rejected. Thus, some countries have now legalized abortion, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, etc. In many countries nowadays, to refer to God’s laws in the discussion of social and political issues, for example, is considered a violation of political correctness. Nowadays in many places, to practice charity and mercy in politics is often deemed anathema. In the understanding of many people about political correctness, one can be brutal and even violent in defending his position

and views. They believe that is the only way truth and justice can be ferreted out from the many options placed on the table. Part of the mistaken assumption behind this attitude is the belief that there is supposed to be separation between Church and state, and therefore anything that has reference to the Church, to God, to religion and faith, should not be made part of any political and social discussion. Local, overseas workers assured of gov’t assistance WORKERS across the local and overseas employment sectors who have been affected by the COVID-19 global pandemic are assured of government financial assistance through the Department of Labor and Employment. Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III once again urged the employers in the private sector to apply to DOLE’s COVID-19 Adjustment Measure Program or CAMP which offers one time 5 thousand pesos financial support to employees of companies or business establishments that have adopted flexible work arrangements or temporary closure due to the COVID 19 pandemic. To avail of the assistance, employers must submit their company payroll for February or earlier which is before the implementation of flexible working arrangements or temporary closure. Secretary Bello advised the establishments to download the “Establishment Report of COVID Form” in the DOLE website, specifically at https://www. dole.gov.ph/.../2020/03/ ER-COVID19-MonitoringForm_ver2.docx\. The form is also available in all DOLE regional offices’ websites and official Facebook pages. Once accomplished, the

form must be submitted through email to the DOLE regional or field office in their area. For the informal sector workers, DOLE is implementing emergency employment assistance through the TUPAD BKK program or Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/ Displaced Workers - #Barangay Ko Bahay Ko. Qualified beneficiaries will receive daily minimum wage for 10 days by disinfecting their houses and vicinities. The disinfection must be done in coordination with the local health offices for safety. Aside from the daily wage, workers will get personal accident insurance, personal protective equipment, and cleaning kit. TUPAD #BKBK is implemented through the barangay/local government units. To avail of the assistance, LGUs must submit to the nearest DOLE field or regional offices the work program and beneficiary profile form. For the overseas Filipino workers whose employment was affected by the pandemic, DOLE will be also providing a one-time 10 thousand pesos assistance. The EcoWaste Coalition, an advocacy group for a zero waste and toxics-free society, has appealed to all households to cut down on trash produced and disposed of during the novel coronavirus contagion. While the volume of commercial waste has declined as expected due to the closure of most establishments in a bid to keep the contagion in check, the amount of household waste may increase with more people staying at home, consuming more perishables, or ordering ready-to-eat food wrapped in single-use packaging, the group said. “As we need to reduce what we throw away in normal and even in abnormal times, we appeal to each and every household to take concrete steps to avoid the production of garbage,” said Jove Benosa, Zero Waste Campaigner, EcoWaste Coalition. According to the group, preventing and reducing the generation of household garbage during the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak will yield a number of benefits for human health and the environment such as the following: 1. Protecting residents and waste workers from being exposed to diseasecausing germs. 2. Depriving diseasecarrying pests such as mosquitoes and rats of places to breed and live. 3. Avoiding the disposal of useful resources that can be repaired, reused, recycled or composted. 4. Minimizing single-use plastic packaging waste. 5. Reducing greenhouse gases formed in disposal sites, such as methane from food and yard waste, that contributes to climate

change. 6. Preventing the leakage of waste and chemical pollutants into the marine ecosystems that can threaten aquatic life. The group also emphasized the importance of separating discards as a key measure to control potential coronavirus infection of formal and informal waste workers who often handle waste with minimal protective masks, gloves, and garments. “While the coronavirus is transmitted mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets, it is also possible for a person to get infected by touching contaminated surfaces or objects and then touching his mouth, nose or eyes. This is why we need to be extra careful on how used face masks, tissues and wipes are disposed of, which are often mixed with other trash and collected by unprotected waste workers,” he said. To curb wasteful and unhealthy practices, as well as to keep trash safe for

waste workers to handle, the EcoWaste Coalition has come up with these 25-point ecofriendly suggestions in the time of coronavirus: 1. Prepare a list of things you need before heading out to the grocery, supermarket or public market to avoid frequent trips outside, as well as the long queues due to the physical distancing being enforced. 2. Plan ahead, write out your daily and weekly meal plan and stick to your chosen menu as much as possible. 3. Shun single-use plastic bags; bring reusable bags for dry goods and reusable containers for wet purchases. 4. Ask the cashier or bagger to put your purchases in a box if you forgot to bring reusable bags and containers with you. 5. Refrain from buying products wrapped in wasteful single-use packaging. 6. Check the “best before,” “use by” or expiration date on the product label and pick items with a longer shelf life.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY – Cebu Pacific Air has chartered more cargo flights to facilitate the shipment of food products, including tuna, from the city and the neighboring areas to Manila. Edgardo Cueto, manager of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), said Wednesday the airline has commissioned an Airbus A320 for three more cargo flights to Manila every week to augment the five regular cargo flights of Cebu Pacific’s ATR 72 freighters every week. BSP to remit P20 billion dividends to fight COVID-19 TO further support the government in its fight against Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) will remit P20 billion as advance dividend to the National Government (NG). The advance dividends constitute 87% of the estimated total dividends based on the BSP’s unaudited financial statements for the year 2020. Under its newly amended charter, the BSP is no longer mandated to remit its dividends to the NG. Section 2 of Republic Act (R.A.) No. 7653, as amended by R.A. 11211, provides that any and all declared dividends of the BSP in favor of the NG shall be released and disbursed immediately for the payment of the BSP’s increase in capitalization. Nevertheless, considering this extraordinary time, the Monetary Board has approved to defer the application of the BSP’s dividends for 2019 to the BSP’s capital and remit P20 billion advance/partial dividends to support the NG’s programs during this enhanced community quarantine due to COVID-19.

MANILA 26 MARCH 2020 – Deputy Speaker and Antique Representative Loren Legarda today urged the government to prioritize the health and well-being of our health professionals, service providers, and other frontliners as the country continues to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Legarda also lamented the death of five doctors who succumbed to COVID-19 and expressed concern for the thousands of medical practitioners who continue to be exposed to the virus as they fulfill their duties. “It breaks my heart to learn that some of our health workers—the very people who are providing care to our patients and keeping us safe from the disease—have died. With the President’s signing of the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, I hope the government can extend adequate support to all our frontliners in addressing COVID-19 as efficiently and urgently as possible,” Legarda said. “I also plea to the general public to not add stress to our already overburdened

hospitals and health workers by staying at home and strictly following government protocol and safety measures during this Enhanced Community Quarantine period. Let us do our part to arrest the spread of the disease,” Legarda added. Legarda, who voted in favor of the passage of the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, said that the law provides a special risk allowance on top of hazard pay, as well as shoulders all medical costs for those who were exposed to the virus.
