AGAYAN de Oro City--Leaders of the largest business group in Northern Mindanao are pushing for the privatization of the city’s lone water utility, the state-owned Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD).
Apparently galvanized by the remarks of economist Bernardo Villegas, leaders of Oro Chamber predicted that the distribution of potable water in the city would be more efficient if it would be operated privately. Villegas, who guested Oro Chamber’s first quarter meeting Friday night at N Hotel, said that government should focus on the proviTwo Liceo de Cagayan University graduates hug each other during the sideline of their commencement exercises sion of public services and last Friday. Opol touted as next gateway to Visayas By MARK FRANCISCO, Correspondent
OPOL, Misamis Oriental-The mayor of this municipality next to regional capital Cagayan de Oro confidently boasted on Wednesday that his town is the ne w gate way to Visayas. This, after Archipelago Philippine Ferries Corporation inaugurated its Opol-B ohol route that evening via Fast Cat, a cataraman-type roll-on roll-off ferry. The Opol-Bohol route, with a stopover in Camiguin, joins eight
other inter-island routes nationwide initiated by the company. Sp e a k i ng on b o ard t he i nau g u r a l voy age, Seno welcomed the additional route, saying it is timely for people to go to Camiguin during the Holy Week and perform the yearly Panaad there. “Compared to the old route in Balingoan, this is more accessible to the people coming from the west side who want to go to Camiguin such as those coming from Zamboanga
and Ozamiz,” the mayor remarked. He said this will give another boost to his hometown which has seen transformation to modernity for the past decade or so. The largest water park in this part of Mindanao, Seven Seas, is also located in Opol. FastCat plies from Opol nightly at 9:00 p.m. and will dock at Balbagon port in Mambajao, Camiguin at 1:15 a.m. the next day before proceeding to Jagna, Bohol and vice-versa. It has a top speed of 16 knots.
tion of utilities to the private sector. Citing Cagayan de Oro’s status as a highly urbanized city, Villegas said it could certainly copy the practice of Metro Manila where the provision of water is split between two private utilities - Maynilad and Manila Water - after the government-operated Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) turned over its operations See pushes, page 11
