this is the third in the history of Lala's annual Alimango Festival that there has no 'alimango mountain' that residents and visitors expect because of the pandemic.

Alimango mountain is a mountain-like arrangement of thousand of crabs that will be distributed to the visitors after the program.

"We were not able to prepare because we are not expecting the COVID surge will low down. But we have enough supply of crabs," Cuaresma said.

Despite the absence of the anticipated 'crab mountain', Cuaresma said the LGU was able to organize other events like crab relay, marathon and

Lily Huiso, a Day Care worker of Barangay San Isidro is her barangay's representatives in crab cooking contest for several years. This year, she cooked 'buttered crabs with vegetables'.

Huiso said her daughter, who works on a cruise ship, taught her some secrets in making it special.

"I am putting it any preser vative or I don't put MSG because it is not good for our body," Huiso said.

More than a thousand couples wed in Lanao del Norte

ALA, LANAO DEL NORTE --Some 1,261 couples said ‘I do’, Sunday (March 20), in a mass wedding ceremony organized by the local government unit (LGU) of Lala town and its partner, a non-government organization, Everca Foundation.

The ceremony came after the national inter agency task force on COVID-19 placed Lanao del Norte’s pandemic risk status to alert level. The town has zero covid cases since the start of 2022.

Wearing their bridal gown and a coat and tie, the couple, coming from the 27 barangays in Lala, started coming to the venue at the ground of the town center as early as 4:00 am to prepare for the ceremony to be officiated by town Mayor Angel Yap. The LGU provided them their gowns and suits and helped them in preparing and processing their marriage license and other pertinent papers.

Yap said, the mass wedding, dubbed as Kasalan Ng Bayan, is the highlight of 73rd founding anniversary celebration of Lala that aims to legalize the marriage of the couple in Lala who have been living together.

“Making your marriage legal is also a gift to your children,” Yap said in his message.

Couple Erlan Espinosa and Mary Ann Pobadora has been living in for 12 years. They have three children aged 8, 5 and 3 years old.

Espinosa is a person with disability (PWD). He was born without two legs.

Pacita, said they attempted to get wed earlier of their relationship but it was pushed through because their income is not enough. Pobadora is a plain housewife.

“Akoang income igo ra man ipamalit og pagkaon ug ubang panginahanglan sa pamilya,” Espinosa said in an interview.

Another couple, Roger Francisco, 62 and Jovy Amador, 53, are also living together for 14 years.

Francisco, a trisikad driver, said their financial status is also a challenge why he was not able to give Jovy a wedding she dreamed of.

“Human aning kasal, mag-drive napud ko’g sikad kay wala mi bugas, aron makapalit mi og bugas. Wala nami selebrasyon kay wala,” Francisco said.

Like the newly-wed Espinosa couple, the Francisco couple has only one purpose of participating in the mass wedding: to get married legally.

Vice Mayor Cesar Yar, Jr. in his message said he appreciated the couples to get wed in the mass wedding because it only showd they are interested to be legally married. “ This will make the government recognize your children and entitled them to your income, social security benefits, health and life insurance, pension, joint tax return and othe benefits as couple,” Vice Mayor Yap said in his message.

“Akoang panghinaut nga ipataliwala ninyo sa inyong kaminyoon ang Diyos, ipalabi ang kalipay sa inyong kapikas ug modesisyon nga magpabiling nahigugma bisan sa mga pagsulay,” the vice mayor added.

Sometimes, we might ask ourselves: What is the sense of doing this and that? What is the meaning of life? I am sure, each and every one of us looks for a good life.

When you’re struggling in life, take assurance in the fact that everyone else struggles like you do. We may not have similar struggles, but it’s still a struggle nonetheless. If struggles didn’t exist, we’d have no way to appreciate the beauty and wonders of life.

Sometimes, we seem to remain very optimistic.

We think it’s easy to always find a good life. Most of the time, we are in doubt or, we even choose to be unhappy without any reason at all. To wake up in the morning with pessimism and fall asleep at night, dissatisfied and unhappy - yes, that makes life miserable.

Face it: Living a good life is not living a life without problems. Living a good life comes from acknowledging, facing, and then transcending each problem as it comes. If you let the problems get you down, you’ll always be down.

Choose instead to let the problems get you up, get you going, and get you working on solving them On the other hand: With-

out happiness and satisfaction there is indeed no space for peace in our hearts and minds. Therefore there is no domestic harmony and logically, no peace on earth.

The meaning of happiness is trying to manage life even with big problems, difficulties and trials. I learned this from Filipinos after staying in the Philippines as an expatriate for good since 1999.I was really surprised to experience mutual happiness, friendship, love, unity and communal spirit with relatives in my surroundings. Even during the really not easy last three years.

Of course, I also found myself in very negative situations. I observed people, who seem to live an easy go lucky way of life. But, they were like actors and actresses on stage, wearing incredible masks and pretending to be what they are not.

Hence, in Greek, they are the so-called hypocrites.

Maybe also you and I belong to them from time to time.

Fear of rejection or displeasure of other people are becoming our daily friends.

In society, it’s called “good public relations”. Politely greeting and smiling with a set of purpose: to win them there for business.

Let us Reflect Now on Painful Realities

As the 2022 Election is fast approaching, it behooves upon all of us to reflect on some socio-economic, ecological and political issues which have been hidden from us all these years as there are so much dissemination of gospel of lies and wrong information. In fact, when I exposed some of these issues as a studentleader-journalist in the ‘70s, I was put behind bars for telling the truth.

It was then the period of Martial Law and I remember writing an article entitled, a Barrio in a Cage, a story about Panalsalan, a barrio in Maramag, Bukidnon, which had been enclosed by a rich, influential Congressman then from the Visayas with 6-feet barb wire, making the barrio as the Congressman’s ranch. I took pictures showing cows mixing with pupils at the elementary school or even entering a chapel during Sunday mass. The cows were the first to harvest the vegetables and crops, leaving the barrio people, the Higaonons, hungry and poor as ever. In fact, out of desperation, the father of a family mixed poison,

Thiodan, in the food of his family at dinnertime and then committed suicide to join the family in the afterlife. Another sad tale was on how a father of a family had gone crazy and burnt his house.

My advocacy to expose such painful societal truth was used against me by influential people, then put me in jail. Inside the prison cell, I wrote a poem, Veritas Liberabit Vos (The Truth Shall Set Us Free) Such bitter experience turned me into a passionate writer which I carried as a Columnist, writing articles about “Veritas” that intend to motivate the readers to act to be set free out of painful realities which came about because of the people’s apathetic attitude.

When people are informed and conscienticized, collective actions follow.

This had been the case of the ecological people in the uplands of Cagayan de Oro when upon knowing that indeed, there was no such thing as rule of law in environment, they readily took direct actions through human barricades to stop the massive flow of illegally-

cut logs.

No less than His Eminence Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, S.J., who was then a priest and the Director of SEARSOLIN in 1991 reported to us that some fifty ten-wheeler trucks carrying illegally cut logs were passing Cagayan de Oro from one o’clock to five o’clock in the morning as he instructed his staff to monitor. When a security guard took pictures of these trucks, an armed escort ran after the guard. Thus, no way can deforestation be stopped but through people’s direct actions.

For ten-years, human barricades went on, beginning first in 1991 with some 300 farmers, Indigenous Peoples and fisherfolk, lying in the street and dared logging trucks to run-over them before these 50 logging trucks every night could pass. Then, in 1999, the number of barricades went up to 6,000 and finally, we put in clear categorical term the statement, “The people united can never be defeated.” Finally, the rule See REFLECT, page 11

ELCAC, best legacy of Duterte Administration, says 10IB

MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL-One of the best legacies of the Duterte Administration is the Executive Order 70 or the Whole-of-Nation Approach to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC), said 1Lt Aries Manalili, Civil Operations Officer of the 10th Infantry Battalion, Philippine Army.

In the third episode of Let’s Talk MisOcc, virtual media forum, March 16, Manalili shared through ELCAC, “Maputol natin kung ano man ang root causes ng insurgency (We can cut whatever is the root causes of insurgency).”

“We are now able to go to places we were not able to reach before. Because of ELCAC, communities living in far flung areas are able to enjoy and avail of the basic services of the government,” he said.

Projects in these areas include barangay development programs, particularly

roads, water system, health centers, barangay centers, and others.

A total of 97 former rebels surrendered in the province recently.

Based on interviews of former rebels, Manalili shared they were recruited by the local communist armed group or the New People’s Army (NPA) because of poverty and lack of support from the government.

As for those who wish to come back and live a normal life, it is important to accept them with open arms. Manalili explained they were also only victims of deception of the rebel group.

“May mga pangako na ibinigay sa kanila, at dahil sa kahirapan, na-exploit sila. Imbes na makabuti sa kanilang kabuhayan, napasama pa,” he said.

JASAAN, Misamis Oriental – Three top rebels of the New People's Army (NPA) were killed, more than 100 evacuated as gun battle continues in the hinterland villages of Jasaan in Misamis Oriental, local officials said Saturday.

Town Mayor Redentor Jardin, of Jasaan said, that the fighting reportedly started Friday morning in Natubo, Jasaan, a village in the boarder of San Nicolas, another farflung village part of the town of Balingasag,

Misamis Oriental.

Jardin said that he was surprised on receiving the report considering that the reported armed skirmishes in the hinterlands of Jasaan took place about 30 years ago.

"The reported armed encounter between the NPA and the military in Jasaan was an isolated one," Jardin said while confirming the reported evacuation of about 35 families to a safer ground.

Village Chief Francisco Luntiao, of Natubo, said that 35 families composed

of about 130 individuals have evacuated to the village center and were extended food packages.

Luntiao said that the residents of the affected villages would be allowed to return to their farms and homes only after the military issued a clearance to return home.

COMELEC-Camiguin: Comply with campaign, election guidelines C

AMIGUIN--As the 2022 National and L o c a l E l e c ti on s dr aw ne ar, the C ommission on E le ctions (COMELEC)-10 calls on candidates in Camiguin to comply with guidelines set for campaigns and other election-related activities.

Pursuant to COMELEC Resolution No. 10732, all political partisan activities including house-to-house campaigning, rallies, motorcades, and mass gatherings will be regulated by the COMELEC Campaign Committee (CCC) to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

COMELEC Election Officer II Michael Ceasar Abarca said supporters aged 18 years and below, above 65 years old, and those with

comorbidities are discouraged from participating in face-to-face campaign activities.

The number of participants allowed for campaign activities will also be limited for areas classified under Alert Level 2 and 3.

Areas placed under Alert Level 4 and 5 are prohibited from conducting in-person campaigning or related activities.

National and local candidates must secure a permit to organize campaign activities on the island from local government units (LGUs).

Some 325 residents from two barangays in the Misamis Oriental town of Jasaan have returned to their homes after an encounter between government troops and communist rebels has ceased.

In a statement released Monday, 1Lt. Vincent Mark Maddul, Army’s 58th Infantry Battalion (58IB) civilmilitary operations officer, said the residents came from Sitios Cogon and Alangit of Barangays Natubo and San Nicolas, respectively.

“The local government unit (LGU) of Jasaan provided food packs to 140 residents from Sitio Cogon and Sitio Alangit, as well as 185 residents from Barangay San Nicolas, who have all safely returned to their respective homes,” Maddul said.

On March 18, the residents fled their homes when 58IB troopers clashed with New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas in Barangay Plaridel, Claveria town, which was adjacent to Barangays Natubo and San Nicolas in Jasaan.

Residents started returning to their homes last Sunday after the LGU, together with the 58IB, declared the area as cleared.

Lt. Col. Ricky Canatoy, 58IB commander, assured residents that no harm will happen in their communities after their return.

“You have nothing to worry about. As your Philippine Army will continue to uphold its duty to ensure the safety and protection of every individual in the

communities,” he said.

The global health crisis brought by COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on all educational systems worldwide and resulted in vast changes. During School Year 2020-2021, the perspective of teaching and learning has shifted.

The restriction of face-toface learning intervention has had a significant impact. As a result, it altered its concentration to provide educational services through various Distance Learning Delivery Modalities. Due to the absence and or limited capacity for face-to-face classroom observation, the instructional supervision prepared the way for Alternative Classroom Observations for SY 20202021, as indicated in a supplemental document on the RPMS School Year 2020-2021 at the time of COVID-19. To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, it stressed remote instructional supervision.

Furthermore, this pandemic has produced an environment in which most of us, regardless of where we are in the globe, are still going through the five stages of grieving.

What we know now is that this distant learning experience is not going away anytime soon in many cities and provinces.

It is time to move toward acceptance so that we can salvage some form of good learning experience at this time and use the new knowledge we have gained to improve the learning environment for learners.

The Alternative Classroom Observations Manual for School Year 2020-2021 is designed to

help teachers and other instructional supervisors through remote instructional supervision for School Year 2021-2022 until everyone is safe during the pandemic. During the serious health problems brought on by the COVID 19 pandemic, there are three choices for classroom observation.

This alternate classroom observation through an online platform was created with enthusiasm by the DepEd Central Office.

To begin, hold an online class using Google Meet, Zoom, or any other platform that is convenient for both learners and teachers. Second, in the absence of the students, a recorded video lesson of the teacher in the actual classroom with teaching materials. Third, a LAC session will be held during which the teacher’s TVBI or RBI will be given, and the LAC committee will make ideas for improving the class. Called the “National Museum of the Philippines in Davao City,” the structure, located within the People’s Park compound, will feature artworks of famous visual artists and the history of the Philippines.

In her last State of the City Address last March 17, Mayor Sara Duterte said the local government is “honored that the National Museum of the Philippines chose to build a national museum in Davao City.”

The City Planning and Development Office said in a statement that the museum will be another landmark of the city with its futuristic durian-inspired exterior design.

He said that the armed clashed turned into a running gun battle when the state forces, while on hot pursuit, discovered the NPA rebels' hideout in the area.

Canatoy identifIed the three top NPA rebels as Agay Taquin, alias Kerby, the Vice Commander of Platoon Falcon, Sub-Regional Command (SRC)1, North Central Mindanao Committe (NCMRC); Andrew Odiongan, alias Dave, political instructor of SRC 1, NCMRC; and Joan Pajardo, alias Amirgo, Team Leader B of Squad 1, Guerilla Force (GF) Huawei, SRC 1.

He said that the military also captured three high powered fire arms and ammunition consisting of one KG9, one M16 rifle, one Carbine rifle, one long magazine for M16 loaded with ammunition, one magazine for carbine loaded with ammo, five tents, personal belongings, and subversive documents.

Oro media toured to flood control mega projects of 1st district

This is just one of the major projects being financed and coursed through the office of Cagayan de Oro City Rep. AGAYAN de OroSome local media here experienced a tour to some Mega and billion worth of projects in the first district of the city which are projects lobbied by Representative Rolando “Klarex” Uy on Saturday.

The team toured to 4 of the mega projects such as a huge drainage system in Lerio-Mabolo Streets in the village of Carmen here,the Php500 Million worth esplanade project located at Ilaya in Carmen village as well and river flood control projects in the villages of Lumbia and Iponan.

In a document we got from the staff of the congressional office,aside from the latter,there is also a 92.12 kilometers road concreting which are farm to market roads under the Build,Build,Build project of the Duterte administration who are now finished and some are ongoing.

Among the said projects,the biggest is the river esplanade.

According to Mr.Bencyrus Ellorin; Cong.Uy’s head of the

media bureau said that that the said project can give avenue to small entrepreneur in the city since it is a proposed recreational area with facilities from restos to cafe’s but it can’t compare to the previously market area dubbed as “Night Cafe” in Dv Soria during the administration of then Mayor Vicente Emano.Ellorin reiterated that this recreational facility is much better than Night Cafe.

City’s esplanade is a park where residents of the city can relax and unwind,they can buy foods to eat and some stuff to choose from its kiosk display because esplanade is an open space where people can breathe fresh air long the river.

The river esplanade is part of JICA funded flood risk management project that the construction is still going on.Unlike the Night Cafe,the esplanade will put up portalets to address better sanitation of the area,Ellorin concluded.

Once it will finished,surely this could be a popular night spot in the city.
