THE Social Security System (SSS) recorded P1.82 billion in disbursements for sickness benefits last year. This amount—which came from the Social Security (SS) Fund— represented a 38.6% decline from the
previous year and reached 269,604 members. SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Aurora C. Ignacio attributed the decrease in applications to the nationwide community quarantine, which affected

EL SALVAD OR CIT Y, MisOr — After a year of Covid-19 pandemic, it seems we are not seeing even a flicker of light at the end of the tunnel. This metaphor exactly fits to where we are now— still at war with the global health menace like no other. We struggled no end, and the trade-offs are overwhelming to the human race. Never in our lifetime that an invisible enemy could downturn in an instant our way of life. Not this kind of global health crisis that had scared us to the teeth — and down to our spines. The damage had been so fatal, so damning in a sense that we were beaten down and out, hard and blue.
The truth of the matter is that the global health crisis that we are at war with has weakened us to the fore. It brought us down into a serious situation never before seen and felt on a global scale. That said, fighting the pandemic has forced us to make unnecessary tradeoffs between our lives, the environment and our livelihoods. Millions are now close to subsistence, and worse — at their survival boundaries. And worst, getting a decent three square meals these days had become nightmares to the millions who are have-nots and the marginalized. While Covid-19 vaccines are being distributed as quickly as possible, no guarantee yet of immediate

relief, nor instant cure. The new coronavirus variant that was initially discovered in the UK, is now with us — detected and confirmed by our health experts. There is no way for now but to take safety as top priority, while waiting for the vaccines, be it from the US, Germany, or from China. Another option against COVID 19?
THE recent alarming upsurge of COVID 19 in the country, the very slow arrival of approved vaccines and the consequent delay in the implementation of the vaccination program have left many Filipinos clutching at straws in search of speedy relief. News reports indicate that the Philippines may see 8,000 new COVID 19 cases daily by end of March with “serious surge” noted in NCR, and “very high” attack rates in Pasay, Makati, Navotas, and Santiago, Isabela. Worse, at the current pace, former DOH chief Esperanza Cabral estimates it will take 12 years to inoculate 70 million Filipinos! The speedy arrival of the vaccines will no doubt ease the concern of citizens. So, Senator Panfilo Lacson is asking: With all the loans that the country has obtained to purchase them, where are the vaccines? The desperation of many Filipinos is reflected in the ongoing “debate” in my Viber Group, consisting of my former Ateneo classmates. The issue is whether alternative remedies should be explored. The debate centers on the use of Ivermectin. Ivermectin is a drug under the Essential Medicines List of both the Philippine FDA and the World Health Organization (WHO). However, it must be emphasized that it was approved as an anti-parasitic VETERINARY medicine. The use of NON-VETERINARY grade Ivermectin, according to the PRO GROUP, has been endorsed by the British Ivermectin Recommendation Development (BIRD) panel. BIRD reportedly recommends
Ivermectin “to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with COVID 19 infection and to prevent COVID 19 infection among those at higher risk.” The PRO Group also cites the experiment of Dr. Allan Landrito, a fellow Muntinlupeño and relative, who is a front-liner in the City Health Department of Muntinlupa. Dr. Landrito reportedly has given it since May 2020 to approximately 8,000 patients and “nobody has died yet.” Nothing to lose and everything to gain, said a member of the Viber Group, who was among 25 per cent who have already placed orders for Ivermectin. Moreover, the vaccine is already available in the Philippines on a prescription basis. Another classmate whose family owns a medical laboratory said: “The inventor of Ivermectin was given a Nobel Prize for medicine. Ivermectin is in the Top 3 best drugs ever invented, after penicillin and aspirin.” Doctors in our Viber group, however, are more cautious. Check first with your personal physician before taking Ivermectin. And so I did. My physician, Dra. Lourdes Dorian-Diaz, has previously cleared me and members of my family to avail of Astra Zeneca or Moderna which are included in the Ayala Vaccine Immunization Plan (AVIP). Dra. Diaz, who is the Chairman of the Therapeutics and Medication Safety Committee of the Makati Medical Center, however, has this to say re Ivermectin. 1. FDA has not approved Ivermectin for use in treating or preventing COVID 19 in humans. Iver-

mectin is not an anti-viral (a drug for treating viruses). 2. Taking large doses of this drug is dangerous and can cause serious harm. 3. If you have a prescription for Ivermectin for an FDA-approved use, get it from a legitimate source and take it exactly as prescribed. 4. Never use medication intended for animals on yourself. Ivermectin preparations for animals are very different from those approved for humans. A third group suggests a traditional option. “Here in Bohol, we have many “espiritistas” and talented “native doctors”. They can easily deal with COVID 19, regardless of the variant. If US vaccines, Indian Ivermectin, Sinovac, Sputnik or the Israel medicine are not available, just give me a call. As proof of their filiation with the decedents, their Certificates of Live birth are respectively attached here are as Annex “B”2 and Annex “C”3 . 3. Diosdado Jr. and Maria Corazon entered the marital vow on October 19, 1974 in a ceremony officiated by Reverend Father Martin Ryan as shown in their Marriage Contract, Annex “D”4 . To the knowledge of the petitioners, the deceased had not executed a pre-nuptial arrangement prior to the celebration of their marriage. Till their death, the marriage was subsisting. The spouses Diosdado Jr. and Maria Corazon were blessed with three children: the petitioners and Diosdado Damdam Lim Yap III (Diosdado III), the eldest of the three children. As proof of Diosdado III’s filiation to the Spouses, his certificate of livebirth is attached here as Annex “E”5. 4. On August 25, 2017, Maria Corazon died on a breast cancer and she was a resident of Purok Balayong Maranding, Lala, Lanao del Norte at the time of her death6, She was a survived by her husband and three children and died intestate. Her estate was partially settled.7 5. Just recently, Diosdado Jr. died of acute pulmonary embolism on December 27, 2020. Economists are keen fans of dynamism, but there are too few signs of it in economics teaching. A survey of American lecturers last year found that their methods, which rely on lectures and assigned textbook reading, had barely changed in 25 years. Textbooks themselves can lag behind the practice of economics. Upskill fatigue: will hybrid and hyflex tip academics over the edge? Will institutions be willing to invest in the spaces, technology and workload support required to effectively teach these methods? Hands up if you’re feeling exhausted. I’m fairly confident that every reader working in a higher education institution has their hand up right now. For academics, we feel it from online teaching, seemingly endless Zoom meetings and
pressure to meet research outcomes. Staff cuts across the sector, including at my university, have left me lamenting the loss of institutional knowledge from long-standing staff who have (smartly) chosen to take voluntary redundancy, as well as the overall lack of staff to handle key functions such as student enquiries and academic integrity/misconduct. We’ve all talked about how Covid was the crisis we needed to have, and at almost every webinar I attend about teaching transformation and the pandemic, people throw around the statistic that we’ve completed what would normally be a five-year transformation in a year (if anyone knows where this comes from, please let me know – my web searching hasn’t found a source).

Another option, it said, is “unlimited rebooking” with no rebooking fee until December 31, 2021. “If you will be completing your travel in the same booking class by June 30, 2021 (or ticket validity, whichever comes first), there will be no fare difference charge,” PAL said. Lastly, it said affected passengers may also refund their ticket “without penalties.” Meanwhile, Cebu Pacific said its passengers affected by the travel suspension may also rebook their flight for free, have it credited in a two-year “travel fund”, or have it refunded through their booking portal up to two hours before their flight.
