At the instance of VPDigital Mike Baños, all three newspapers later launched their own stand-alone websites in tandem with their respective social media fan pages to maximize their reach. Then in 2018, Sudaria conceptualized and launched MDN Teleradyo as a streaming service on social media serving up a varied mix of news, public affairs, entertainment, and sports. For his part, Oro Press Club President Manuel Jaudian said that with the advent of the internet, everyone can now connect with everyone on a global scale, leading to the rise of various internet sub-cultures revolving not merely with one’s friends and acquaintances, but even with unknown associates from distant locations with shared advocacies and beliefs. However, Jaudian also noted the widespread misinformation brought about by the emergence of social media, fake news and the irresponsible sharing of unverified facts online. “Digital platforms have made communication, socialization, sharing and interacting easier for people with an internet connection, yet the responsibility to share the truth to the general public remains

paramount particularly this time of pandemic,” Jaudian noted. “We cannot only be the consumers of information, but also become instant information producers, Jaudian said. “Sharing news, thoughts and opinions to a global audience through the internet is no longer something only for the rich and the powerful.” “In the era of blogs, social media and instant communication, disseminating information is neverending, and anyone with an internet connection can now have their beliefs and opinions posted on Facebook and Twitter unedited,” he added. Despite the rise of digital media, Jaudian said the old mainstream media remain relevant as key editing gatekeepers to maintain the veracity and authenticity of information. Published information is parsed by editors and producers to ensure it is true, timely and accurate. Jaudian noted how the absence of media gatekeepers has allowed social media influencers to become not just information consumers, but also information producers thanks to apps like Twitter which spreads news faster than ever. Thus, the new media can be produced and disseminated by anyone with an internet connection, without necessarily following journalism ethics and editing protocols. That is the downside of the new media, and why digital news platforms like the MDNN with its mix of traditional mainstream and new media are most welcome as gatekeepers of the truth.

SOMETIMES, we feel our life is turning miserably. Especially now. Living with the big “C”! Our negativism doesn’t allow us to keep our eyes, ears - and, most important! - our minds, hearts and souls opened. We’re reaching our breaking point. Me and you! This breaking point can be the prelude to our strongest moment. Can be! Must not! But try it! Despite the virus! But if yes, then it is when we reach our breaking point, we discover our real strength. Allow me to ask you, my dear readers: “What happens to you or with you when you reach your breaking point?” Do you face it or do you run away? I’ll be giving you a very simple answer: If you face it - you break it. If you run away (and/or close your

ears, eyes and mouth) - it breaks you! Are you in love with life? No? Why not? Sure, in my previous column at this corner, I stated that it’s okay if you feel bad. But many have taken this as a general instruction. Everyday - a dull reality! Many of us will answer this question with a big YES! Actually, we do like to cover a newborn day already with grey veil.But, each day has a new face, but sometimes we don’t have the strength to watch its countenance. Of course, not every day has adventures and highlights. Would be really too easy! Contrary to what might be expected, I look back on experiences that, at the same time, seemed especially desolating and painful with a particular satisfaction.

If it ever were to be possible to eliminate affliction from your earthly existence, the result would not be to make life delectable, but to make it too banal and trivial to be endurable. Developing a worldview WE should, each one of us, develop a worldview as early as possible. This will help us to have a good and deep understanding about ourselves and the world in general, and about the most basic and ultimate dimensions of our life. It gives us a global picture of the meaning and purpose of our life. Some people see it as some guiding philosophy or ideology they have toward their whole life. A dictionary describes it as “collection of attitudes, values, stories and expectations about the world around us, which inform our every thought and action. It is expressed in ethics, religion, philosophy, scientific beliefs and so on. It is how a culture works out in individual practice.” Nowadays when many

people, especially the youth, are practically just drifting according to the varying conditions in the world, with hardly any consistency in their actuations, or sense of direction and purpose, developing a worldview has become an urgent need. Many do not have a longterm and unified vision about their life, caught and confused as they are in their fragmented understanding of things in general. A worldview should give us a good and guiding understanding of who we really are, where we came from and where we are supposed to go in our life. It is supposed to show us how we can coordinate and integrate the many aspects of our life. It should give us a clear idea of what ought to be considered of absolute

value in life and what only have a relative value. In other words, when one has a worldview, he can act with clarity of purpose. He can act with great confidence. He would know what to do in any situation, condition or circumstance of his life. He can connect everything into one whole meaningful pursuit in his life. Beware of elixir of fame, Pacman

SENATOR Manny Pacquiao has been going around recently in what he asserts as a way to help those in need. There is nothing wrong with that. Manny, the legendary boxing hero is known to be generous to his friends. His sudden and recent act of charity, however, is tainted with politics. He has been named acting president of PDP-LABAN and is making the rounds of the country which fuels speculations he is vying to run for President in 2022. Boxing is one thing, running a country is another. I think the Pacman has enough gray matters between his ears that could trigger him to think that the Presidency is not his cup of tea. He thinks that governing a country is nothing

different from running a barangay. It’s like thinking if he wins eight different boxing titles why can’t he win as President. In real life, Manny won several local government elective posts including his incumbency as Senator. He forgot, moreover, that those posts are so small to return a debt of local and national gratitude for bringing honors to the country as a victorious pugilist. But the Presidency? My mother-in-law would tell him: “Ano ka hilo (Are you dizzy)?” Does he want more than being President of PDPLaban which has yet to be confirmed by the ruling party in a Convention? Did not somebody advise him that being President of the party does not mean he is

going to be the standardbearer of the party too? Aside from the Korean noodle cups as his way of demonstrating his affection for the poor, several billboards endorsing him as President have sprouted overnight. And then quietly, too , Pacquiao unceremoniously replaced Manny Lumanao the Regional Chairman of PDP-Laban in Caraga with Johnny Pimentel. Does Manny Pacquiao have the authority to do so? In 2019, around 560 students enrolled at Talogtog Elementary School in Mangaldan, Pangasinan. He avoids what St. Paul once said as being like infants, “tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.” (Eph 4,14) We should encourage everyone to develop a clear worldview. Especially these days, when there can be so many confusing elements that are all so irresistibly attractive, this need to develop a worldview should be given top priority. And where and how should we base and develop this worldview? There are actually many sources and methods for this. There are many philosophies, ideologies and spiritualities around. Some have already been historically tested and are found to be helpful, at least in some areas. But we have to realize that our Christian faith, if lived integrally, can already give us a very good worldview. Of course, living our Christian faith integrally would be a never-ending affair. And aside from doing all sorts of things to understand and assimilate it better, our Christian faith would always require us to ask for God’s grace. And it will also involve a lot of mysteries for which we should be ready to be trusting in God’s providence as well as being game and sport in the twists and turns of our life. Women’s empowerment is the process of giving women control over their choices and access to opportunities and resources that allow them to thrive. While there’s been progress, gender inequality remains a persistent issue in the world. Empowering women politically, socially, economically, educationally, and psychologically helps narrow the gap. It is almost automatic that anyone educating a girl empowers her. However, concentrating solely on educating girls will not result in empowered women unless teachers are themselves skilled and active promoters of gender equality. Alongside families and communities, teachers from the frontline of child’s development and in many cases, spend more time with children than anyone else, acting not only as educators but also as conduits of information and change. There are various ways

in how one can empower women. The individuals and government must both come together to make it happen. Education for girls must be made compulsory so that women can become illiterate to make a life for themselves. Women must be given equal opportunities in every filed, irrespective of gender. Moreover, they must also be given equal pay. It is also useful to instill compassion and sense of citizenship in students while they were at school so they will understand while they may have a relatively advantaged position, there are girls and women across the world who suffer injustice on a daily basis. It could be simple as encouraging students to engage in leadership. Either way, providing students with an opportunity to make a real difference gives them an appetite for bringing about change in all areas. And it needs to start in classrooms.

‘Balik Probinsya’ sends 6 families home to DavNor By PREXX MARNIE KATE TROZO

DAVAO CITY--Davao del Norte provincial government officials welcomed Friday six families that availed of the government’s “Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa Program” (BP2) In a statement, the National Housing Authority in Region 11 (NHA-11) said families consisting of 19 individuals are from Tagum City, Panabo City, Kapalong, and Sto. Tomas, all in Davao del Norte province. They all arrived by plane at the Davao International Airport (DIA) here. Zenaida M. Cabiles, NHA11 manager, said the beneficiaries are pioneer recipients of the BP2 program after the province agreed to accommodate them. “They are those living at the National Capital Region (NCR) who are either affected by the pandemic, displaced workers, or living in dangerous areas who wished to go home to their provinces voluntarily,” Cabiles. Cabiles said the NHA is tasked to provide technical and administrative support by coordinating with various local government units (LGUs) and facilitating their return. Jorina Sevilla, one of the beneficiaries of the program, said they were only renting a house in Quezon City and could no longer afford to

pay for their unit, especially during the pandemic. “Living there is so hard, and we could no longer afford it,” Sevilla said in vernacular. Noel Daquiag, Davao del Norte provincial tourism officer, said the families will be temporarily housed in an isolation facility before they will be allowed to return to their places. Daquiag the families will receive long-term assistance that includes livelihood programs. A brainchild of Sen. Christopher Lawrence Go, the BP2 program aims to decongest Metro Manila and other urban centers and promote growth in the regions. Under the program, recipients would receive government aid such as transportation, cash, and livelihood assistance as part of the relocation package. The program, contained in Executive Order No. 114 signed by President Rodrigo Duterte in May this year, aims “to ensure balanced regional development and equitable distribution of wealth, resources and opportunities through policies and programs that boost countryside development and inclusive growth, provide adequate social services, and promote full employment, industrialization and improved quality of life in rural areas.” (PNA)
